This book was right on time for me this year. I was in the mode of creating a debt-free life from this point on. I knew what I needed to do, but Lifting the Burdens of Debt gave me the know how and spiritual support to make sure that I do it the correct way. To date, I must say that I am no longer held hostage by debt. Thanks Mrs. Rogers-Cherry for your very timely and insightful view of debt. When will we get the follow-up sequel?

A must read for anyone considering psychotropic meds
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 1999-01-20
This book, though now 10 years old, is an outstanding book of reviews of the research on the effectiveness of psychiatric medications. Each chapter reviews a different class of meds, including anti-depressants (pre-Prozac), anxiolitics (anti-anxiety meds), neuroleptics (so-called antipsychotics), Ritalin (in a chapter that challenges the idea that Attention Deficit Disorder even exists), and even a chapter on shock treatment. The review are rigorous, scholarly, and critical. The editors summarize the reviews by stating that at the present time (1989)"biological psychiatry is swimming in uncertainty" in spite of the inflated claims of the pharmaceutical industry regarding their highly profitable products (little has changed in the last ten years in this respect) The authors of the various chapters criticize technical aspects of research designs, the financial dependence of researchers on drug companies, the exaggeration of therapeutic benefits, the ignoring of negative results, the minimization or under-reporting of side effects, and the over-generalizing of the appropriate use of medications to patient populations that were not part of the research on a particular drug's effectiveness. This is a must read for psychotherapists and patients who have been intimidated by the claims that drug treatments are quicker and more effective than psychotherapy, claims that this book calls into question.

I bought this book when it first came out and I continue to read it and refer to it. It is one of the rare scholarly compilations to question the current rush toward simple fixes for psychological distress. I keep lending it to people and having to fight to get it back. There is solid and interesting research and a different perspective on mental well being. If you are serious about understanding biological interventions to mental health problems, this is a significant contribution.

This book is very informative and has loads of pictures.
It is fun to read and I recommend it to any collector of
toy trains. The author also has written an excellent book
on the Lionel postwar F3 locomotive. Both books are a great
resource for collectors and fans of Lionel trains.

These are wonderful little books. Just the right size for little hands to hold.
The illustrations are brightly coloured and funny.
They're great for early readers and fun for adults too.
They are written in the UK, so an occasional explanation for certain words maybe necessary, but doesn't detract from the stories?

Love these books

I am a Pre-K teacher and I recently bought this book for my class. Little Miss Naughty "borrows" the Good Fairy's magic wand intending to play tricks on her friends with it. However, every time she uses the wand, she actually ends up helping her friends and things turn out for the best (which frustrates her to no end). I got a kick out of this story and I think you will too!

Little Miss Sunshine finds herself in Miseryland. She gets arrested because she laughs and giggles too much. She is a happy person all of the time, even in Miseryland. She changes the names of Miseryland to Laughterland so that everybody there can be happy. She even teaches the King of Miseryland to laugh.

Mr. Men And Little Miss series are the very best!

DOG-GONE GOOD MORAL IN THIS STORY
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2004-01-29
Puppies are irresistible and so is a unique and very special one - Little Scraggly Hair who lived years and years ago. And, of all things, this pup had a warm, dry nose.

In his day people weren't dog lovers. In fact, they had absolutely no use for them. Dogs weren't allowed in their cabins: "Sooner ask in their pigs." As if this weren't bad enough for Little Scraggly Hair the other dogs didn't like him either. He was unusual because he didn't chase cats; he rather liked them. All this little fellow knew was to run and hide because he was positive he'd always be chased off. Furthermore, he surely was hungry.

Fortunately for Little Scraggly Hair he wandered into the yard of a man named Noah who was working very hard at building a boat. That was surprising as there wasn't any water nearby. Even more surprising was Noah's kindness - he was nice to the puppy and shared his dinner with him.

The surprise in this endearing tale of friendship between a man and a puppy is how puppies developed cold wet noses.

Children will find lots of smiles and a valuable lesson to learn in "Little Scraggly Hair."

Great Time Capsule of the LA Punk Scene!

I Waited for this Book!
I was at the Release Party/Concert in LA, back in November 2007. But I couldn't buy it there Or even see one! The 30th anniversary of the Masque was a Blast then & this book is a Great addition to the Memories of that Night. If you couldn't be there in the Original days, or the night of the show, this will make up for it!
Bands! Clothes! Stars! Cars! Girls! Guys!

The Best Rock scenes Form & Develop themselves, & LA was no Exception. Even though "inspired" by London & New York, LA's insular scene made for a More Original, sounding & looking bunch of Bands & Fans. This Book's images, by the Best Underground snappers & scenesters, give the Best insight to What it Must have been like to be in that Lucky group rockin' in that smelly old Basement!
I went to LA in 1978, as a 10 year old, & I distinctly remember seeing a Bunch of "weirdos" on Hollywood Blvd. I returned in 2003 & Made my Bee-line to that Back alley after Years of being under the LA scene's Musical Spell. It's just a Locked door now, but I'm at least thrilled to now have this Document of those far gone days.

I Love Brendan Mullen's insight & anecdotes of the Scene. Nothing about Cashing in on it, Just filling his Need to protect the History of a Scene, & punk world taken over by the Posers & Millionaires of the So called "Punk Rock" "scene" of today. a Great Companion to the book: We've got the Neutron Bomb!

Literally a Snapshot into just a few fleeting years in the Music History of LA.

Great Documentation of the Hollywood scene.

Locke: A Biography

Woolhouses's Engaging Biography Helps Us Better Understand Both Locke and the Heritage of Liberty
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-07-17
Although Locke's philosophical arguments must stand or fall on their own merits, our knowledge of his life and times nevertheless enhances our understanding of those arguments. Fortunately, Locke was a regular correspondent and journal keeper, so scholars such as Woolhouse can reconstruct both major and minor episodes in his life and convey something of his character. Woolhouse does an excellent job of weaving all of these strands together to produce a comprehensive account that, perhaps surprisingly, is highly readable.

Different sorts of readers look for different qualities in biographies. Woolhouse's book will appeal to many. Readers of a historical bent will be most interested in the exciting and dramatic events of the 1670s and 1680s that unfolded around Locke--the Whig/Tory conflict, the religious struggles, the Glorious Revolution, and the advent of William of Orange. It is difficult to overstate the significance of these events in British, Dutch, and French history for the later development of Europe and for how the North American colonies would evolve, and it is interesting to see them from Locke's perspective, sometimes as an observer and other times as a participant. Readers of a more philosophical bent will be interested in the development of Locke's thinking in its historical context--for example, how he reacted against Cartesian rationalism and came to develop his empiricist theory of knowledge, or how he came to incorporate the older natural-law tradition into a comprehensive theory of natural (that is, prepolitical) rights to life, liberty, and property....

Locke's contributions to epistemology, philosophy of mind, and theology are still staples of modern higher education, and his life would be worth studying in relation to any of these subjects. We feel his influence most strongly, however, in our political lives. When one studies Locke's political writings, their influence on the American revolutionaries eighty years later is obvious. By the 1770s, though, Lockean principles were no longer radical; they were commonly accepted because they had been the principles of the faction that emerged victorious in the English power struggle of the 1680s. So when Jefferson wrote, "We hold these truths to be self-evident," the declaration was a highly effective rhetorical flourish rather than a plainly false epistemological claim. If Lockean principles were widely accepted in England, then how could the English deny the logic of the colonists' position? The later development of a system of government predicated on natural-rights theory, as remarkable as it was, did not arise in a vacuum. It had antecedents in history. By studying these antecedents, we can understand our own times better. Because Locke was such a crucial figure in this story, Woolhouse has done us all a great service by producing this biography.

Well Balanced

Review Date: 2007-08-31
This is a fascinating biography of the great Locke. It is well balanced in details of both the life and movements of Locke, as well as providing some concise discussion on his various works.

I was left the thought as to just how Locke's works may have developed if he, like all in his age, did not have the threat of religious politics breathing down his neck. I tend to believe he would have been a lot closer to Hume if he had both lived in Hume's age and had Hume courage ( and lack of political ambition!)

A great biography that almost demands to be finished in one sitting.
