This is a beautiful book with many photographs which bring back special memories to those who have a connection with U of IL. It will be a special treasure for anyone who attended the university. Many different aspects of university life are covered by Don Hamerman's fabulous photographs. A great gift for alumni, current students or those who hold a special place for Urbana/Champaign and the University of Illinois in their memories.

Just beautiful

This is an absolute must have for Univ. of Illinois alumni who appreciate good photography. In talking with other alumni who have seen and/or own this book, the images bring up memories from their time on campus. It also tweaks the curiosity, because Hamerman shows a penchant for finding new perspectives (close-ups, etc.) that can be overlooked in the rush of campus life. Compared to other photography of the UI campus I've seen, this is very original. And Ebert's introduction is a nice read -- it ties in wonderfully to the book. I highly recommend!

Profusely illustrated with photographs and charts, and covers all fields of anthropology
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-09
A classic anthropology textbook, profusely illustrated with photographs and charts, which covers all fields of anthropology, including human evolution, origin of races, archaeology, cultural evolution, and languages of the world. Originally published in 1974 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, and formerly used in universities as a basic textbook, this book is now available only in used but good condition.
The author follows an evolutionary approach, showing how all human behavior is shaped by genetics, culture, and environment.
Contents include:
The Evolutionary Background: "In the Beginning..."; Ecology and Adaptation - The Evolutionary Process; The Fish That Crawled; Mammals Supplant Reptiles; Into the Trees; Mammalian Social Life; In Search of the Missing Link; An African Eden?; The Man Who Walked Erect; The Coming of Homo sapiens; From Calipers to Biochemical Markers: Physical Anthropology Comes of Age; Classifying the Living Races.
Ethnological Analysis: Culture and Society; Band, Tribe and Nation; Marriage and Kinship; Custom and Law; Economic Organization; Social Stratification; Magic and Taboo; Propitiating the Gods; The Esthetic Adventure.
Ecological Adaptation: Studying Cultural Change; Marginal Survivors from the Paleolithic; Horticulturalists: Warlike and Peaceful; Fishing Societies; Simple Pastoralists; Advanced Pastoralists; Centralized Chieftanships; The Rise of Urban Civilization; Civilization in the Old and New World; Peasant Societies; Industrial Societies; Postscript: The Evidence of Language
This book does not cover the latest advances in DNA research, but nevertheless provides still-valid, unbiased information about the evolutionary background of the living races of man, and the evolutionary history of human cultures worldwide.

I had the pleasure of being a student of the author. He is a fascinating scholar and professor of anthropology, which is his foundation for this book. It is a must for any student in anthropology, especially cultural anthropology. Each element of the basic culture traits that have evolved over the millennia are defined with clarity and excellent examples.

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) in Education has an excellent information part from different approaches and methodological part important for all educators and administrators, who wants to improve and develop policy, implement and provide critical evaluation.

"CDA in Education" edited by Rebecca Rogers contains different approaches to research based on cultural/human, political/economical and social-historical sciences.

I recommand the book for graduate students as well as for the Ph.D students in educational sciences.

This is the best book I have ever read on Wireless. I have thoroughly enjoyed the book. The authors ability to take complex information and break it down to a more understandable level. I have read the book a couple of times and each time I pick up something new or I understand something a little better than I did before. I highly recommend this book for anyone that is interested in learning more about Wirless. I also recommend this book to all teachers that are interested in teaching a Wireless class. Teachers, you want find a better book that delivers this much information about Wireless.

Excellent read!

Being an IT professional, I have looked for some time for an easy-to-understand book on the various wireless technologies. I just came upon this book a very short while ago and am amazed! This book presents the major wireless topics in a clear manner. It also covers the major emerging wireless technlogies like WAP, Bluetooth, etc. And, it even provides some informative exercises to get the knoweledge down "pat". I have read many books lately, but this one is a real "keeper" (and I am generally hard to please).

This compilation of Jeanette Pasin Sloan's paintings display the aesthetics of her color and form together with an interesting twist on the common place subject matter. Equally interesting is the biographic sketch impacting her maturation as an accomplished, well-recognized artist.

--A VERY ENJOYABLE ATLAS OF GORGEOUS PAINTINGS THAT HAVE BEEN EXTREMELY WELL PRESENTED.

Underscored with an informative text by Gerrit Henry

Review Date: 2001-03-02
The artwork of Jeanette Pasin Sloan's took a distinctly contemporary approach to design and color, employing strong forms, vertiginous arrangements of patterned fabrics, and distorting reflections. Her work also evolved from a use of complex patterning through a period of brilliant color to the elegant formal brio and subtle tonalities. During the 1980s, she did a series of still lifes using brand-name consumer items reflecting the interests and tastes of that materialistic decade. An outstandingly presented contribution to any personal or academic art history collection, Jeanette Pasin Sloan's work is underscored with an informative text by Gerrit Henry that combines biography, description of her working methods, and a critical analysis of her accomplishments.

I had forgotten all about this book until I saw it listed here. I dug through all my old stuff in the basement, finally found it, and sat down, right there on the cold concrete floor of the basement, and read, right through. This book brought back a lot of memories. This was my favorite book when I was a youngster. Its still a fun read. Get it for yourself or your kids and you'll have fun time.
