Roger Marolt's outlandishly creative letters-to-the-editor, have the effect of a fresh breeze on the reflecting pool into which the narcissistic and self-absorbed community of Aspen gazes. It is comical and provocative, and should required reading for residents and visitors to this mountain mecca!

I love Aspen. I've read all the books about that wonderful town. This is the best ever! It's histerically funny, insightful, poignant, tender at times, and a great chronical of the town's recent history. The book gives us a glimpse of what it must be like to live in fantasy land, U.S.A. Mr. Marolt is a genius!

A rethinking of economic theories
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-08
The author has successfully discussed the various theoretical works done on "inflation". It had been enlightening to know that many of the great, simple theories in economics simply did not say anything useful. The balanced approach in discussing each issue had been a key feature throughout the book. I would recommend that final year economic students and MBA students should read this excellently written book.

A Gold Mine of information from a Trusted Source

Few books match what is depicted in "the death of inflation" The importance of this work is even more obvious as we are now several years after the book was originally published. The historical perspective presented is quite interesting, and with the advent of the internet, labor is the true source of the "zero inflation" idea. Price competition is inherently deflationary. This long term study "of studies" will show the average reader that capital, like any other commodity, is just another "fixed asset" in the universe. There is neither more or less of it in the universe, which means that inflation, as we have come to know it, is nothing more than an illusion in the short term, and a fallacy in the long term.

ANY book by Roger Sherman Loomis is an indispensable addition of any self-respecting Arthurian library. His work was ground-breaking when it was written, and much of it stands firmly today against the work of more recent scholars.
The original editions are rare and long out of print.
To find new and reasonably-priced editions like this one may not have the romance of chance finds in libraries or antiquarian bookshops, but it is certainly a more than satisfactory solution.

From the Beginning

Roger Sherman Loomis is probably the doyen of Arthurian scholars. He has written countless works on the subject, and has made a name for himself as an academic who has a very clear picture of what is fact, what is legend, and what is fantasy. And in the realm of Arthurian scholarship there is no more important differentiation to make. For the student trying to make sense of the stories of a 6th Century chieftain and the legacy of legend and story that follow him about life without Loomis would be 'through a glass, darkly.'

Loomis features completeness, an unbiased approach, and a lucid writing style that brings the confusion into focus. I have several of Loomis's more scholarly works (most of which have sadly gone out of print) but this is really the most accessible of the bunch. Keep in mind, though, that this is still intended for students of the subject rather than for those seeking popular treatments. It provides much material for thought, and many pointers to other sources that might interest the reader.

An especially good dictionary of 'political conceptions'
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-04-07
This dictionary is especially good. This is because it was written entirely by Roger Scruton, one of the most distinguished political philosophers of modern times.
He says the aim of the dictionary has been " to extract, both from active debate, and from the theories and intuitions which surround it, the principal ideas through which modern political beliefs find expression. The emphasis of the dictionary is conceptual rather than factual, exploring the formuation of docrtines rather than specific application. Political events are mentioned only when they cast light on intellectual conceptions."

PHILOSOPHY AS IT RELATES TO POLITICS

In yet another year of 30 second sound bites that we are asked to believe represent well thought out positions on substantive issues, I would recommend this book as an unbiased source for finding out what such words as "liberalism" and "conservatism" really mean.

This reference book goes much deeper than mere definitions in its discussions of everything from the philosophies of Kierkegaard and Heidegger, as they relate to political thinking, to such diverse concepts as "infrastructure," "political economy," and "due process." There are over 1500 entries in all, and each one sheds some light on terms that are bandied about, and frequently misunderstood, by politicians seeking support. There are also many other terms, some common and some obscure, that are discussed.

I think that any reader could benefit by reading the discussions under the aforementioned topics of "Liberalism" and "Conservatism." There might be some surprises awaiting that reader. There is a lot more, and sometimes a lot less, substance than is commonly understood about these political philosophies. Neither discussion fits the negative images presented by the opponents of each of these political philosophies. There seem to be negatives and positives to both.

There is also an excellent discussions on the subject of existentialism and its meaning in the context of late 20th century and early 21st century politics.

Just a few other ideas of what awaits the user of A DICTIONARY OF POLITICAL THOUGHT:

An excellent discussion on the subject of "education" as the process whereby a rational being is instructed and the political implications of this instruction.

A discussion of the concepts of a political party and what distinguishes a party from a faction.

There's much more to this dictionary which might be better defined as an encyclopedia. I think that, during any campaign year, this book, with its many definitions and concept clarifications should be at one's side whenever he or she is listening to any campaign rhetoric.

Men are from Burgers - Who knows about women?

This wonderfully entertaining book reveals the relationship that men have to food in our culture, laid out through a hugely entertaining set of stories and recipes. It explains why my friends' father-daughter Indian Princess group lasted so long - men's relationship to food is to food-as-ceremony. The book is primarily hilarious, with recipes that aren't precise but more of artistic directions - feel free to make your ribs with plenty of bourbon for the cook and a hammock and an old dog at your feet!

The Last Apology

There was a time when men-in America at least- had to pretend certain things about food. There were canonical prefences-steaks, bourbon, eating beans directly from the can. There were also aversions: fuss, vegetables, anything called a sauce. All these pretenses were the real barriers to actually enjoying food and so of course there were men who defied them, but didn't really want to lose their masculinity merit badge in the process.
Welsch's good old boy cred is entirely intact-he even has a picture of a grill and an outhouse on the cover of his book, but he's showing the beginnings of a real interest in the way things taste. I cannot imagine a better gourmet book club choice for a men's club-we can laugh or for a woman's- they can gather ammunition.

The Foreword is by Jim Harrison whose own The Raw and the Cooked: Adventures of a Roving Gourmand is still one of the best books about men and food.

Superb -- both historical fiction and science fiction
Helpful Votes: 24 out of 24 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-15
This novel about Roger Bacon, the great English medieval monk and scientific thinker, is one of the finest historical novels ever written, and yet -- paradoxically -- it is also one of the finest science-fiction novels ever written, by one of the greatest writers of science fiction who ever lived.

It is science fiction because it deals with a man who dares to envision a future changed by scientific discovery and technological innovation, in a time and a place where such thoughts are all but unimaginable ... and yet, because Blish so carefully yet unobtrusively grounds his work in superb historical research and recreation, it works perfectly.

It is a tragedy that this book is out of print.

[NOTE: DOCTOR MIRABILIS is the first volume of what Blish intended to be a trilogy under the general title AFTER SUCH KNOWLEDGE..., from the ancient question, "After such knowledge, what forgiveness"? The middle novel actually is two novels -- BLACK EASTER and THE DAY AFTER JUDGMENT, which are entertaining and disturbing but not quite up to the first and third novels in the sequence. The last novel in the trilogy is A CASE OF CONSCIENCE, every bit as magnificent as DOCTOR MIRABILIS. Some brillaint publisher should do an omnibus volume.]

a great book about the Middle Ages

People looking for a book that captures the atmosphere of the Middle Ages - both the intellectual life and the everyday life - would be much better advised to read this book than, for example, Umberto Eco's Name of the Rose. I definitely agree with the other reviewer that this is a classic which should be much better known. Not only is the content interesting for the reasons mentioned above, but it is very well written - a fine piece of literature. My only complaint would be that it is too short.

Another novel which I think does a wonderful job of capturing the feel of life in the High Middle Ages is T.H. White's Once and Future King.

A wonderful wonderful book.Although the book was written some 150 year ago, Mary Eliza Rogers takes you into the intimacies of daily life in Palestine in the 1850's as if it was occurring today. She writes from her heart with honesty, integrity and a clear mind. And although written at a time of Victorian prejudicies and colonialism she writes without bias or judgement. From her beautiful and colourful descriptions one can envisage the Holy Land as it was before undergoing the process of modernisation and change. For anyone who has any attachment to this land it is a truly wonderful and personal experience to read this book.

Roger Duvoisin's DONKEY DONKEY tells of a donkey who has the strangest ears on the farm - long, and sticking up straight. He wants a new look - but nobody can agree on how Donkey-donkey's ears should look best. Each farm animal has a different idea! This book first appeared in 1933 and is only the second written and illustrated by Caldecott medalist winner Duvoisin. It went out of print in the late 1970s, so it's an excellent acquisition libraries need to replace a well worn shelf classic.

My husband had this book when he was a child. His mother put it away and saved it for him and now we read it to our girls. The kids love it and as a parent, it is one of my absolute favorites. There are so many children's books I dread reading over and over and over but I really never get tired of this one. The writing and illustrations are charming and it teaches an important lesson. I highly recommend it!
