Great Botanical Calendar

If you liked the 2005 version, you will love this one, too! A clean, good-sized calendar with big numbers and outstanding photo compositions of a range of flowering plants and trees. Phillips and Rix pioneered this way of presenting the different stages of plant development in their 2-volume masterpiece, The Botanical Garden, and this calendar will remind you every day of the lush beauty and diversity of the Plant Kingdom. Each composition has notes describing what you see, and at the bottom of the calendar page is a full paragraph about the genus or species.

I love this calendar because it has enough space for me to write three or four appointments in each box. The illustrations are beautiful, and also educational.

But the reason I'm taking time to write this review is that when I first ordered this, it did not arrive on time (because it was shipped via the US post office.) I was able to reach Amazon by phone, and when I explained I needed it soon, to start recording 2006 appointments, they sent me a replacement by overnight shipment at no additional charge. I was very impressed by a website offering this level of personal customer service. Many thanks!!!! I hope someone will read this post, and pass my thanks along to the people behind the scenes who do the work.

Practical Information

This book provides practical information available on cattle disease and production. It involves a the concentration of effort by large number of different experts into one volume. A working guiding rather than a reference book and it is a particular help to those at the 'sharp end' of the veterinary profession. Inevitably there are some areas of subject-overlap as might be expected with skin conditions and ectoparasites and 'downer cow', etc. Each author provides his/her own perspective on the subject. There is a section about alternative medicine for to cattle therapy.

At last, a superior Brassai monograph
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-01
When Abrams released their long-delayed book on Brassai last December, THE EYE OF PARIS, I was very critical of the entire piece. The images weren't well-printed, the selection was mundane, and the whole thing had an oddly slapped together quality, especially for such a major publisher. Now we have Bullfinch's answer to the recent Brassai gap, and it is a clear success, head and shoulders above this earlier release. After only a relatively cursory look at the book, it is clear that this is what we've been waiting for. The selction of images is deep and varied, mixing both the iconic with the lesser known, the printing is lustrous and dimensional, and the layout is both attractive and compelling. The production may not match the incredible PARIS BY NIGHT reissue of the late 80's, but nothing probably ever will. That said, this book looks very good indeed. I haven't read the impressively credited text yet, but the visuals are certainly terrific, the most important thing, obviously, in a photography book. It is hard to imagine a superior monograph on this seminal figure forthcoming anytime soon. Grab it and feast.

Extensive, In-Depth Look at the Breadth of Brassai's Work

This book deserves more than five stars.

Before going further, let me mention that Brassai's images contain many sinners and show the seamier side of Paris. For example, there are many photographs of prostitutes here. If such subjects upset you, do avoid this volume.

The collection of Brassai's work at the Musee National d'Art Moderne at the Pompidou Centre in Paris was recently expanded from 300 to 500 items due to a large deposit by Mme. Gilberte Brassai, his widow. This monograph greatly benefits from these additions. The monograph also commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1899.

Best known for his photography, Brassai had many other dimensions: collector, scholar, sketcher, sculptor, and writer. His self description was as "a creator of images." This book does an excellent job of capturing all of these elements so we can better understand the entire man and his work.

As Brassai said, "The meaning of art is not authenticity . . . but the expression of authenticity." Why does he say that? Well, his method of photography required careful staging because of the bulkiness of his equipment and its slow speed. So, although an image may seem like something taken by a news photographer from the Daily Blurb, Brassai's techniques required that subjects hold their poses for long periods of time. Much like Cindy Sherman does today using herself as the model, those in the photographs were often friends of Brassai's who were posing as someone else. So what is remarkable about these "candid" photos is his "use of re-creation and reconstruction" to produce them.

Taking the photograph was really just the beginning. Using darkness as his ally, it is the print that makes the difference to his representations. "A negative means nothing for my kind of photographer." "It's the artist's proof that counts."

Here are my favorite photographic images in the book:

Notre-Dame, c. 1930-32

The Pont Neuf, c. 1932

The Viaduc d'Auteiul, 1932

The Baker, c. 1930-32

Public Urinals, c. 1932

For a Detective Story, 1931-32

The Big Night at Longchamp, July 1937

False Sky, 1934-35

Nudes of 1934

Matches, c. 1930

Picasso, His Studio and Works, 1932-46

Montmartre, c. 1935-37

Metro Pillar, 1934 (you will see a man's face in the shadow of the pillar)

Odalisque Transmutation, 1934/1967 (this is clearly influenced by Picasso)

The essays in the book are excellent. I especially liked Alain Sayag's comparison of his work to Chinese painting.

I also learned a lot about his life. Like many famous photographers he had to earn a living by doing more commercial work. These images often were done on his own time, late at night. Interestingly, many great photographic images were created in only 1-3 takes. In part, this reflected his poverty.

Actually, he had earlier earned a living from writing about France for German newspapers. The Depression began to cut off that source of funds, and photography was taken up in part to supplement his income. By selling the story and the images, he could get paid a little more. He also worked for Harper's Bazaar taking photographs by day for many years.

The text also contains many selections from what Henry Miller and he had to say about each other and their long-term friendship. This emphasizes "seeing only what is."

My appreciation of the photography was improved by seeing his drawings and sculptures. Clearly influenced by prehistoric and primitive art, many of these images look like fertility gods. His women are all bottom. From these, I could understand his graffiti photographs of images that could literally have come from the caves at Lescaux. So in looking for the "reality" Brassai was reaching deeper into our ancient psyches than other photographers before and since.

I came away very much more interested in Brassai, as I am sure you will be.

After you finish consider Brassai, I suggest you ask yourself how you could add more dimensions of expression to your personal life. What can you share that is both "real" and important for others? How can you best accomplish that?

Au revoir.

Perhaps the Best Book Ever Written on American Railroadiana

Brownie the Boomer. This is perhaps THE classic book of all time regarding American Railroadiana. The history of this book is amazing. It was written and self-published, and then the author, Charles P. Brown, disappeared from the face of the earth. The book also disappeared. However, one of the university presses found an original, perhaps in the Library of Congress; I'm not sure where they got it. Suffice to say they knew what they were looking at when they saw it, and it has been republished. This book is dead-on original railroad. Not ghost-written, not a compilation. This guy, well, I won't give away the ending, but I can see him now sitting at a card table in a basement boiler room, hunting-and-pecking out his stories on an old portable typewriter. One of the really great things the author does is start just about every paragraph with: "Well, then I headed down into Oklahoma (or wherever). He starts the paragraphs this way because HE IS TELLING YOU THE STORY. Who says the past is gone? SIX STARS!

A tremendous insight into the (early twentieth century) world of a "Rail" (railroad employee), heavy with the vernacular of the industry (most of which is still used by today's "Rails"), with their irreverant sense of humor, which ranges from passive subtleties to outrageous exercises. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING!

Overlooked Gem

This game is often overlooked- or outright dismissed- by the gaming community. However, it may be my favorite game setting of all time. The mechanic used to judge action is a streamlined AD&D 2nd edition model and is heavily skill-based; level-based emphasis on classes (called careers in this game) is less than in standard AD&D.

The setting is amazing and very interesting. The designers of this game emphasized that they wanted a "plausible" future for the setting and that is done very well within the confines of making a playable and fun RPG! The XXVc (25th Century) setting is confined to our solar system (assuming as you read this you are orbiting Sol like I) and the "aliens" and "monsters" are genetic variations of humans or other animals- custom-tailored to exploit different environments within the solar system..or for other, more nefarious means.

The extra sourcebooks and adventure modules also serve to bring the setting alive, but I strongly recommend getting the 10 "comic modules" published by TSR and set in the XXVc setting. These comic modules bring to life the atmosphere of the XXVc in full color glory- gritty and hard as it might be (that's right- this isn't the campy Buck Rogers from the early 80s...this is a totally different animal in more ways than one). These comic modules (so-called because each comic included a complete board or card game within its pages) coupled with the boxed set will keep a gaming group (or a fan of good sci-fi) entertained for hours!

I can't recommend the RPG, the novels or the comics enough! I've scoured the internet for information on this game and I've come across several threads at RPG forums which mention how this game was a good one, overlooked- a real gem. Do yourself a favor and delve into the XXVc!!

A TSR attempt at a sci-fi role playing game

TSR was the grand-daddy of Role Playing Game companies. Best known for "Dungeons & Dragons," TSR actually developed many other games (some fine, others less than great), but none ever approached the popularity of D&D. Interestingly, TSR had much trouble coming up with a science fiction RPG, and wanted badly to emulate the success of the "Traveller" RPG at rival company GDW.

In 1990, they secured the license to the "Buck Rogers" franchise, and developed a game around it. The game never received a huge audience, but it wasn't for a lack of trying. In addition to game supplements, they published Buck Rogers novels, comics, and even a board game. (See my "Amazon List" of products) It's more Science Fantasy (like Star Wars) than Sci-Fi to my taste, but I sure admire the love and effort put into the game system.

The basic set as listed here should include the following books and accessories: "Characters & Combat," "The World Book," "The Technology Book," 4 maps, measuring device, 24 large cards, die-cut counters, and a ref's screen.

Hume's message - reconciliation, inclusion, respect and peace
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-30
I grew up in Belfast, and always had a lot of respect for the SDLP - initially Gerry Fitt and then John Hume being my political heroes. The book sets out with clarity mapping the real world experiences of John Hume and the progress - or maybe that should be regress - of the troubles in Northern Ireland. This book should be compulsory reading for kids growing up in Israel and Palestine, and probably Darfur and other regions of unrest. And of course, in Washington DC as well. Acheiving peace is not easy and does not come from the barrel of a gun. I don't recall the exact quote, and a friend is reading the book now, but it is along the lines of "Victory does not bring about peace - it simply puts it off". Never a truer word was said.

A framework for true reconciliation in Northern Ireland
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 1998-09-12
John Hume is a virtually unknown figure in the United States, but he has been steadily gaining recognition due to his work in the Northern Irish peace agreement. This recognition is overdue and much deserved. This monumental book outlines Hume's political philosophy - a philosophy which seeks to brush aside the vengefulness and intransigence of Northern Ireland's past, searching instead for reconciliation through justice for all. Hume is heavily influenced by Matin Luther King, Jr. and John F. Kennedy, and quotes from these two figures flavor Hume's text. Hume's themes may seem repetitive, and his ideas seem to be based on the shakey foundation of human progress, but this work demonstrates that he is a champion for for a true peace in Northern Ireland - a peace that is just for all.

Hidden Cures for Cancer

Review Date: 2007-02-18
I was very happy to find this book which confirmed to me that there are natural cures to cancer. I had already decided that I was going to visit the Bio Medical Center in Tijuana, and reading the details of the herbal treatments made me feel more at ease with my decision.
I believe in the information that Edgar Cayce received during his trance states has come from a valid source. So, to see that both the Hoxsey Treatment and Edgar Cayce's cures were very much the same, I knew I was going to get the healing that I needed.
Several days later I booked a flight out to Tijuana for the Hoxsey Treatment at the Bio Medical Center and I was very impressed. All of the doctors and other employees were very knowledgable and loving. It was an experience that I felt was very positive for me and the others that I met. I am now on the Hoxsey treatment and have made numerous changes in my diet to coincide with the treatment. I am feeling much better, and I have been told that even my skin looks better. I know that this is the begining of a major life change for me and I know that I will be here for a long time to come. I have found the right source for the healing that I need for me. I hope that many of you who are searching for healing from cancer will look into this treatment. It can change your life.
Thank you for having this book available.

Given the timely, straightforward, and useful information in this amazing little document, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is or knows someone who is suffering from cancer and/or any other illness pronounced "incurable" by current allopathic medicine practices. Succinct and fact-based, this book details the numerous parallels in the healing formulas shared by Dr. Harry Hoxsey and Edgar Cayce - formulas based on powerful chemical synergies generated by "backyard" medicinal plants such as red clover and burdock that are available in abundance and at low-cost. As other comments have discussed, this book also gives the contact information for the clinic that continues to heal people of cancer. Since reading it, I've ordered over 10 copies to give to those who could benefit from the information.
