This has been a great teaching text for neurology and psychiatry residents. In fact, I think my original copy was never returned by one.

Outstanding, concise - a must for neurologists!!

While Devinsky is probably best known as an epileptologist, his knowledge of behavioral neurology is very clearly displayed in this very readable & concise book. 100 maxims takes the form of 100 facts in behavioral neurology, all concisely written, well researched, and authoritative. Clear neuropathologic and neuroanatomic substrates for numerous behavioral neurology syndromes (e.g., aphasia, visual agnosia, ideomotor apraxia, etc.) are discussed, with appropriate clinical examples. This is an excellent 'little' book, very concisely and densely written. It makes an excellent study guide for neurology residents, neuropsychiatrists, neuropsychologists - those preparing for boards, teachers in the fiels, and as a quick reference for experienced professionals. Highly recommended!

Excellent Picture Book

I bought this for my son when he was about one year old. He loves this book. He picks this among other books because it is big. Loves the pictures (very bright and clear pictures. The right number of pictures on each page) He points to each picture and asks us to name it. Or we play the "Where is..." game. He wants to read this everyday. A great way to increase his vocabulary. He can correctly point at a lot of animals now. There are not many BIG board books with real pictures out there. Atleast I havent found many.

My son's pediatrian has this book in her office and every time we go for a checkup he can not stop looking at it. All the other books in the office are nice but for some reason he seems to love this one. It might be its big size and/or all the bright colours but it works. I bought a copy few days after our last visit and since the book arrived he's been 'reading' it all the time. The itself has a lots of animals, plants, trains, cars, buses, etc. BTW, my son is 19 months right now. Great book for a toddler.

This book should be considered the new standard for high-performance coaching. Kaufman provides a solid, strategic, measurable framework to plan and achieve superior individual and team performance, moving the discipline fuzzy psicologysms to tangible, rational assessment and planning.
I recommend this book as a guideline and orientation tool for high potential performers. It will help them to set and achieve value-adding goals aligned with their organization and their organization's clients.

Simple, Effective and Life Changing

Kaufman's new book should be on the desk of every executive, parent and student in the world. His approach to decision making is simple, effective and results oriented. The many tables, charts and exercises in the book, along with the anecdotes to better describe the concepts in the book, make this a book that can and should be read by everyone. When you think about how we all can positively impact society by making sound decisions, then implementing the actions of those decisions, and when we use the techniques in this book to help us achieve those lofty goals (and according to Kaufman, they are achievable), we all will create a better world for ourselves and our grandchildren. When you read this book, you'll find that positively impacting society through our decisions and behaviors is a course of action we all should and must take. Better decisions lead to a better life for all of us.

Hiram Rogers has done it again! As an avid outdoorsman, Hiram's trail guides have helped me navigate my way through the Black Hills of South Dakota and some equally rewarding trails in Kentucky. Hiram's latest book incorporates wonderful photography and a meticulous description of what one will see and experience. Having read both books before traversing the respective trails, I could almost anticipate what was behind every bend. I look forward to his next release!

50-Hikes Series gets another excellent addition

If you're a fan of the 50 Hikes Series (like I am), you're going to fall in love this offering. As the title suggests, this book describes 50 hikes in the Bluegrass State, ranging in length from 0.9 to 13.4 miles. The entire state is covered, from Breaks Interstate Park and Big South Fork in the east to Land Between the Lakes and Mammoth Cave in the west. You'll find a hike for every ability and for every interest in here.

Each hike contains driving directions (starting at a nearby town), a map copied from the USGS topo maps, and a well-informed and well-written background on the area. A summary table in the front of the book helps you select a hike of interest quickly.

Most of the "famous" trails in Kentucky are described here, with a few lesser-known options thrown in. Of particular note are two cave "hikes" (i.e. tours) that are described in the Mammoth Cave section, something I'm not sure I've seen in a hiking guide before. These two count toward the 50-hikes total, so there are really 48 "traditional" hikes. Having done a considerable amount of hiking in Kentucky, there were a couple of trails that I was expecting to be included that were not. Perhaps they could have been if not for the cave tours, but Hiram's choice makes the book different and more interesting. This work still contains the "best and brightest" trails in Kentucky.

Having thoroughly enjoyed Hiram's earlier work "Exploring the Black Hills and Badlands," I was expecting big things out of this book. I was not disappointed. I have several guides to Kentucky hiking on my bookshelf, and this one is the best. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys reading about trails or is interested in Kentucky hiking.

I thought tha Butterflies in Flight was a crowning achievement. 500 Flowers is amazingly beautiful. Roger Camp uses his lense as a brush and nature as his palette in this essay of natures wonders.

Roger Camp's book, 500 Flowers, is an amazing collection of beautiful flowers and outstanding photography. Gardeners will relish the tour provided by the flowers from all over the world. Photographers will appreciate the intimate focus given each of the subjects.

Camp is familiar with each of his subjects, having raised over half of the blooms himself, in his own garden. His love of plants bursts from each page, as we see blooms of every texture, color, size, and shape. The Alluaudia procerr, a plant of Madagascar, had me searching the internet to learn more. Spiny and colorful, the Euphorbia tiracalli had me wishing I could go to Africa to see it in its native home. I live in the land of native echinacea purpurea, and the example in the book had me longing to go for a long walk in the tallgrass prairie near my home.

This is a book you'll love forever. And, like Cicero, you'll agree, "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need."

Review Date: 2001-12-04
I had the privilege of studying under Dr William Breit at Trinity University in San Antonio, and can attest to his skill in (and dedication to) taking abstruse economic thought and making it comprehensible to -- if not the layman -- at least the student with some grounding in economic principles.

(Dr Breit and his partner in crime Dr Kenneth Elzinga perform a similar service in the series of murder mysteries they penned under the name Marshall Jevons -- a pseudonym derived from the names of two of the economists profiled in 'The Academic Scribblers.')

Condensing the life work of major economists into articles of a few pages long necessarily involves leaving some things out and seriously compressing others. In spite of this, though, Breit and Ransom give us a comprehensive look at these men and their work -- enough to understand their place in the pantheon of economic thought. They also show how that thought has stood the test of time and the assaults of competing theories. And while the authors' editorializing is light, they are also willing to point out how these economic ideas have been employed in the political arena.

In all, a great textbook for an Intro to Economic Thought class, and a valuable tool for someone wishing to understand the paths the 'dismal science' has traveled over time.

For any undergraduate or layperson, the Academic Scribblers is the most lucid uncomplicated look at the work of 12 key economists. If you ever need a good guide to the subject of economics this is it.

Are humble people wimps? Are they scared of life, criticism of others, or taking independent action? Quite the contrary, according to Roger Fritz, who counters every myth that has historically negated the leadership capabilities of those with the greatest potential to lead!

After you!: Can Humble People Prevail? is a very unique book that will both inspire and motivate you in your life. What a wonderful book to have in your collection! Once you read it, I feel certain that you will refer to it often for inspiration and reassurance in your daily life.

"Few human beings, if any, can ignore kindness. Something in our makeup seeks it and appreciates it. The people we admire most seem to be kind and thoughtful most of the time." ~Roger Fritz

Do you think Humble people lack confidence or are weak people with a loser attitude? Well, it turns out that many people equate humility with weakness. If you are suspicious of self-centered people and want to read about people who have their egos under control, then you will enjoy Dr. Roger Fritz' enlightening book about why the absence of pride can make a person a better leader. There are 10 interesting chapters:

Why Arrogance Is Vulnerable
Loyalty Works Both Ways
The Upside of Defeat
When Pride Goes Too Far
How to Identify Pretenders
Quiet Dignity
Random Acts of Kindness
Defining Moments
No Need to Get Even
Why Egotists are Lonely

The author discusses how arrogant people are short sighted and are therefore vulnerable to downfall because they don't acknowledge their weakness or gain support from others.

"We look for those who do not push us aside as they chase their own ambitions and vanity." ~Robert Fritz

Throughout this excellent book, you will find a common sense approach, collectible quotes and insight into the qualities of a good leader. It was interesting to learn about how the strongest people don't need constant praise to excel. You can take the SQ test to find out how selfish you are (it is funny) and then explore why humble people prefer to be an example for others to follow.

Some of the quotes I enjoyed:

Positive People do not follow Negative People
Failure is a prelude to winning
Today there is a circumstance but tomorrow there is only what I made of it.

Dr. Fritz has written 44 books and his work has been distributed in 35 countries and languages. His work encourages you to strive to be a better person and to face your faults head on in an amusing way.

important view of world class art on the verge extinction.
Helpful Votes: 18 out of 18 total.
Review Date: 1998-01-25
Upon the northern edge of the Indian subcontinent, in the hilly folds near the Himalayas, east of Kashmir near the Tibetan border south of the Indus river is Ladakh. Its valleys have long been a great trade and invasion route to the north of India. There is Alchi, a distinct daedal of Buddhist temples with splendid wall paintings and clay sculptures that have survived for the past eight hundred years to reveal some of the best preserved and unaltered images, an iconography of a flourishing Varjayana Buddhism. This sumptuous limited edition offers a detailed photo survey and archaeological description of one of the most impressive of the temples at Alchi, the Sumtsek (Three-Tiered) Temple. The building itself is a composite blend of Tibetan and Kashmiri elements that demonstrate some central Asian components. The wall paintings are in an elaborate and delicate Kashmiri style. This style is known to still exist only in a few other temples in Ladakh and western Tibet. The minuteness and finesse of the form and style of many of the paintings appears to be a transposition of techniques developed for miniatures in manuscripts onto the larger surfaces of walls. The adept vision of the monk artists of the Sumtsek combines a lavish display of tantric teachings, with still evolving artistic styles and methods. These are blended with the requirements of a donor's personal vision into structural possibilities of the building's interior design and access to light. All this culminates into a integrated sanctuary, one of the great gems of early tantric iconography. It is a treasure in its own right as valuable as the Sistine Chapel or Saint Marks Basilica. The wooden panels of the ceilings are painted with a rich variety of textile motifs, some deriving from Greco-Iranian and Sassanian sources, others similar to those found on the pantheon figures of the Buddhist wall paintings, pointing to the international character of the northwest Indian and Kashmiri medieval civilization. The text provides a full introduction to the icons and historical social religious context of the building as best as that can reconstructed through archaeological and scientific methods. In many ways the volume is also a plea for the international preservation of these treasures of Buddhist art due to of the recent rapid deterioration because of changes in climate and rainfall. The paintings reveal early forms of iconographic cult that offer important means of interpreting the evolution of the ritual use of painting. The book ALCHI contains over 300 color plates, maps, and plans. They are beautifully integrated into the text and are important evidence of the development of the cult meditation Buddhas of the Varjayana tradition. This volume is an important documentation of some world class art on the verge of extinction.

A must have book

Review Date: 2000-12-03
I was trained in art history at Smith College, so I thought I had some notion of the world's greatest art monuments. NOT!

Alchi is every bit as sophisticated, refined and important as the Sistine Chapel, the Pompei frescoes, etc. that we in the West are already familiar with.

Seeing Alchi in person blows you away - you're amazed that something this precious and beautiful exists, and, miraculously, has survived so many chances at oblivion. Go to see it - or, failing that, buy this book. You can't take pictures inside anyway, so either way, buy this book. An astonishing and deeply moving masterpiece (both the place and the book).

Fascinating study of a political odyssey

Review Date: 2006-12-23
Alexander Doniphan is one of those great characters from history who learned from his mistakes about the role of government. He is one who rebelled against the demogoguery of American politics to become a true independent having experienced first-hand the results of policies he had helped push through at one time. A warrior who came to know the horrors of war and so came to realize its utter futility and underlying causes of greed and self-aggrandizement. He, like Smedly Butler in the century that followed, came to see war as a racket for a few at the expense of the majority. Doniphan's integrity in the Mormon wars shines through in a world gone mad with hate. His life is so full of examples for us it is sad that he, once a household name, has become virtually unknown to us now. He truly was a great American hero and we would do well to honor his life and work. The book is wonderfully well written and complemented with black and white photos and drawings from the Doniphan's life. It is a must have for the serious student of mid-19th century American politics.

Great biography on important but neglected figure

Alexander William Doniphan was one of the most significant and popular figures in Missouri from the 1830s through the 1870s. He excelled as an orator above all but was also an extremely successful attorney (he defended 188 clients on murder charges with most being found innocent and none receiving the death penalty), military leader, politician and businessman and an influential educator and farmer. Doniphan's most famous exploit, the conquest of New Mexico and Chihuahua and the creation of a law code to govern the first area, was chronicalled several times in the 19th century but this is the first full biography to be published about this important man. I have studied most of the available primary and secondary sources on Doniphan and find this biography to be both balanced and complete. Anyone who is interested in Mormon, Missouri or Western History should find this book worth reading.
