Roger Books

This book was well done and easy to follow. Each project was small enough to complete in less than a weekend. I loved it. I recommend it to everyone.

This is a very useful book. It's full of patterns that are easy to follow and as if that wasn't enough, it has suggestions for other adaptations. Well worth the purchase.

How many of us have more than a few UFOs (unfinished objects) in our cross-stitch collection? This book provides a variety of small patterns that can be finished in a reasonable length of time. Not only are there the mini-cushions of the title; for most of the patterns there are also even smaller pieces - a section of the cushion motif, re-arranged, for example - that can be used as card inserts, pincushions, even jewelry.

Although these are small projects, they are not simplistic, as so many "quick and easy" booklets have - these are sophisticated designs. Most are offered with alternate color choices suggested, too, so that they can be varied to match your decor or personal preference.

Color numbers are given for DMC, Anchor and Madiera, reflecting that this is a UK book; those in the US, we are most likely to be using DMC floss. For those projects where beads are suggested, you can look for brands of beads available in the US - the colors are pretty general, for the beads - or you can substitute floss of the bead color; the patterns won't suffer from that, although they look nice with the beads. Speaking of substitutions, I also note that most of the patterns call for whole stitches and back stitches only, no half or quarter stitches - which means that they can also easily be used for needlepoint as well as cross-stitch. (Or single crochet, if you really want to give yourself a challenge! Not suitable for knitting, however, as the graphs depend on an even-weave scale, and knitting is not even as to length and width.) I plan to try at least one of them in needlepoint, although still using cotton floss rather than tapestry wool. The variety of colors available in tapestry wool, though, is even greater than floss, so you could really go to town on variations on the patterns in that wise.

While most of the motifs are floral, not all are. There are patterns that use playing card images, chess pieces, fossils, heraldry-like shapes, and others. The only animals, however, are insects (bees, butterflies, and a few others). For those of us who have the usual (who knows why, but there it is) affinity for cats along with our needlework, it would have been nice to have a design that somehow featured cats; perhaps we can hope for that in a second book by the same designer!

A sweet and simple series of books, most have a humorous twist and illustrations that engender a smile. Adults can appreciate them as they read them to the preschool to early elementary crowd.

Poor Mr. Slow just wants to take things... well, slow. But alas a rather busy and obtrusive Mr. Busy is determined to speed up his slow ways. After getting cleaned up, eating breakfast, and cutting the grass (all by 7am!) he decides to go on a picnic. So he goes into Mr. Slow's house, up to his room and wakes him up to go on his picnic. They end up eating in Mr. Slow's front lawn as well... Mr. Slow was too slow to get to the picnic grounds. Then Mr. Busy informs his slow neighbor that tomorrow they will get up a 6am!!!
At 6am Mr. Busy rushes into Mr. Slow's bedroom to find... nobody. Nobody at all. So off Mr. Busy goes leaving a happy snoring Mr. Slow asleep under the bed!!!

another cute mr. men story, this one involving mr. busy, with, of all characters, mr. slow. brightly coloured and amusing, kids under 10 will enjoy all the mr. men stories.

I am so excited to see that Mr. Men books are for sale on Amazon. I had several of the books when I was little, and I fondly remember my mom reading the silly stories to me (about 25 years ago). Mr. Forgetful was my favorite. These books are so simple and cute, and I'm thrilled that I can add them to my daughter's collection.

I have had this book since I was a child and I recently found it and read it to my 2 1/2 year old son. He loved it! It has now become his favorite book. I think I can recite the whole thing by heart. I would definately recommend this book to anyone with children or adults too. I am now going to find more Mr. Men books for our collection. They are timeless and someday my son will have them for his kids.

What a fabulous book! I just read it with my eight year old and he loved it and so did I. We just got introduced to the Mr. and Miss books by my son's teacher. We read this together and both laughed. Mr. Forgetful forgets everything. He is walking along when a police officer asks Mr. Forgetful to deliver a message to the farmer saying his cow is in the lane. Poor Mr. Forgetful tries so hard to remember. He walks to the farmer's house repeating to himself, "A cow is in the lane. A cow is in the lane." By the time poor Mr. Forgetful talks to the farmer, all he can remember is, "A goose is in the rain." It's a fun, light hearted book. Read them all. The adults like them too.

I watch Mister Rogers' Neighborhood just about every day with my daughter and have come to respect Mr. Rogers. I borrowed this book from the library to see what he could teach me about children. I found this book to be full of wisdom he gained from his dedication to children. He loved what he did and you can tell that kept him always learning. The insights in this book are incredible. The book also contains sheet music of many of his songs in the back.

Mr. Rogers' brilliant insights are so easily taken for granted, that most of us Americans don't even think twice about him. His influence is so ubiquitous that it's very easy to overlook the alternative -- the very likely possibility that we could have no models like him. His body of work is a lovely lesson in parenting, and this book is a helpful guide for new parents. After all, his example is precisely the sort of stability and consistency, patience and deep understanding, competence and reliability, which are so greatly needed in parents. Every parent wants to be effective -- Mr. Rogers shows how.

As a Clinical Psychologist working with children and families, I can give this book my heartfelt recommendation. Rarely are such complex and difficult questions answered so well without using jargon and confusing language. I frequently recommend this book to families, particularly to young parents.

Moon Launch! Is a sister book to "Gateway to the Moon" (GTTM) GTTM is an excellent history of the development of the space center launch complex, while "Moon Launch" is a great history of the development of the Saturn V rocket.

The book details the development of the crawler, the launch complexes, and the Saturn V. Details of each Saturn flight are explained, including manned and unmanned flights. I found the countdown charts particularly interesting because they highlight the complexity of assembling, preparing, and launching the Saturn V rocket.

Today, we take for granted man went to the moon. This book explains the incredible details that had to be accurately addressed just to assemble and launch the rocket.

Another must-have book for the library of an armchair astronaut.

First published as part of the NASA History Series under the title "Moonport", the University of Florida Press very wisely decided to split the book into two easier to read volumes. The first volume primarily tells the story of how Florida swamp land was turned into the world's most sophisicated launch centre. The second volume which will suit the more casual reader goes into detail about the Missions themselves with an extensive chapter on the Apollo 1 fire, a subject which NASA is still touchy about. All the Apollo missions are described and looking back in perspective, I am dismayed that it is nearly thirty years since men last walked on the Moon.

For anyone interested in space, this is an essential book to have and read again and again

In 1978 Charles D. Benson and William Barnaby Faherty published "Moonport: A History of Apollo Launch Facilities and Operations" as NASA Special Publication-4204. It was an outstanding history of the design and construction of the lunar launch facilities at Kennedy Space Center. Of "Moonport," a reviewer in the "Journal of American History" said in 1979, "The authors had access to official documents, letters, and memoranda, and they have apparently consulted all the relevant historical, technological, and scientific secondary materials...all the involved historians obviously spent con-siderable time studying and intellectually digesting technical reports and manuals in order to give their lay readers such lucid accounts of highly complex procedures and operations...it is important to public knowledge to have professionally trained his-torians employ historical methods to ex-plain significant events and place them in a meaningful historical context. Here is a broad lesson...that contemporary society can ill afford to ignore."

"Moonport" has been out of print for many years, and comanding a high price on the second-hand book market, but now it has been reprinted in a convenient paperback version. "Moon Launch!" contains the second half of the text of "Moonport," chapters 15-24, and the appendices, of the earlier work. For anyone interested in the race to the Moon, this book is a must read!

Short&Shivery

The Short&Shivery is a book with different stories. My favorite story is The Dead Mother. The main characters are the baby, the husband, and the dead mother. The Dead Mother is about mom who died while having her baby. The mother spirit would come back every night to visit her baby.

I liked some of the stories in Short&Shiverys such as the story called The Dead Mother because the author described the characters very well. The author showed a lot of detail on how the house looked, and how the baby acted when it was crying. The other stories didn't have as much detail as the book The Dead Mother.

I purchased this book after reading my copy of the first Short and Shivery to tatters when I was young enough to go away to summer camp. This sequel continues the creepy tradition started by Mr. San Souci in the first book. Taking stories from around the world and re-telling them in a kid friendly format (with just enough scare factor to raise the hackles on any kid at camp) this sequel is just as good as the first book. Stand out stories in this volume are:

Windigo Island

The Rolling Head

The Croglin Grange Vampire

"Me, Myself"

The Accursed House

and

The Thing in the Woods

Another fine jaunt into introductory folklore for kids.

The selection and telling of the stories is just as good as the original Short and Shivery. This series does not make the mistake of many other short story collections, which is that you see the same stories published over and over. This is a sophisticated telling of creepy tales you probably haven't heard already. Great for reading aloud to your kids, and the accompanying sketches are wonderful to look at.

I am an elementary teacher and I use these books in my class to supplement our Character Ed program (which isn't the greatest). My students love the Little Miss and Mr. Men books. I have to keep them behind my desk and let them "check them out" like library books or they fight over them. The are excellent to use in a pinch if you have a book that pertains to a problem that has developed in class (especially rudeness or bossiness). It is easy to read the book and have a quick class chat about what is going on. I highly recommend all of the books for anyone who teaches, home schools, or children in general. They are a great asset.

We can ALL relate to this installment in the Mr. Men series. A man who talks too much, all the time, and about nothing in particular. However in this story a solution is found via the magic of a magic hat!
After chatting to the hat maker all day long the hat maker orders a magic hat!
This hat grows ever time Mr. Chatterbox chatters aimlessly about nothing much in particular. When the hat finally reaches the ground Mr. Chatter box is quite perplexed. After some silence on his part the hat shrinks back to its normal size. After a few of these hat incidents Mr. Chatterbox finally learns his lesson! And everyone lives happily ever after.

The Mr. Men series is really wonderful for kids 5-8 years old. Each book tells a simple story with an important (yet easy-to-understand) moral. The illustrations are very bright, colorful, and humorous. Adults enjoy reading it along with their kids.

Mr. Chatterbox teaches the reader about modesty and the importance of listening. As his name suggests, he talks too much! His friends find a clever way to keep him quiet and make him a better listener. Could this apply to me as well as to my child?

I first came into contact with Mr Greedy when I was seven, and I haven't looked back. He's truly changed my life. I wanted to be Mr Greedy, but they wouldn't let me. Instead, I purchased the entire collection of Mr Men books from my local bookshop, and gave them to my sister for Christmas.

Sorry for the randomness of this review, but I'm insane.

Mr Greedy tells the sad tale of a man who can't stop eating. Try as he might, he wants to eat everything in sight. Will Mr Greedy be able to cut back on his eating? Or will his greediness be the end of Mr Greedy? Read it and see!

Mr Greedy, along with Mr. Strong, is undoubtedly the top title in these books by Roger Hargreaves. As Sir Jonathan Hawkins MBE OBE Phd MP Esq. so eliquently put it "Roger Hargreaves is the ultimate children's writer and is a real aid to the little children that I so dearly love", and so the same can be said for all of us! In fact, as he is also a lecturer in child studies at Cambridge University, one of his students (who also happens to be his son, Jonathan Hawkins Jnr.) said that this set of books could be seen as a metaphor for the unpredictable upbringing of many children in our topsy-turvy society. The Mr. Men titles are a must read for all children, make sure that Mr. Greedy is part of your collection!! Mr. Greedy is about one particular character who cannot stop his eating habits, his friends try in various amusing ways to help their buddy out!

Great story. The kids absolutely love it. It's a little nostalgic, too, as I remember these books from when I was a kid. The vocabulary is good; it doesn't pander, and it's challenging but not too difficult.

Mr. Grumpy's behavior is not atypical of young children's behavior. This book helps the child to see his/her temperment in a realistic light, and helps you to coax better behavior out of your child.

Roger Hargreaves has done it again with Mr. Grumpy (part of the Mr. Men series). Mr. Grumpy is an ill-tempered fellow, but thanks to a cleverly devised plan by Mr. Happy and Mr. Tickle, we see a change in Mr. Grumpy's ways. A change for the better! This is a cute book that teaches a good lesson for young children. It shows that attitude is everything and that the nicer you are, the nicer others will be towards you.

This book is a wonder. And I mean just that. It's about people who have second or third or fourth homes on an island that has been purposefully developed to house them in privacy and various definitions of splendour. Not exactly appealing to all, right? But this book IS appealing, it's the embodiment of the capitalist dream: get the money and THEN what do you do with it? Build or buy a house on Mustique. BEST is the text, a well-written account of how this all happened. And the PHOTOGRAPHS are lovely, chosen to evoke the mood. Yes, the book is expensive (no where nearly as the real estate!), but it's worth every penny. May not be my dream, but it a serious chronicle of some important other dreams in the late 20th/early 21st century.

This is an excellently written book about one of the world's most expensive "developments," a scrub island turned into a multi-millionaires' paradise. Mr. Vaughan has done a masterful job of capturing the whimsy and the vision (albeit sometimes slightly cock-eyed) of the man who dreamed this all up, as well as bits of the lives of those who are now availing themselves of the private, secure, and demonstrably exquisitely beautiful end result. The photographs are lovely, this is an altogether great book to have lying around on any cofee table; it's sure to spark conversation ("is that really Mick Jagger?" et cetera).

I think this book captures the true essence of the island of Mustique. It shown all the wonderful beaches and the beautiful water. I believe that the photos of the people that live on the island and the photos of their town make Mustique a place I would want to visit for years to come.
