This book was great! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down. The story is really creative and unique while remaining scriptural. It's well worth the money and I'd highly recommend it to anyone!

A wonderful account of the history of one of the most important counties in South Carolina. An easy read, reads almost like a novel, but well detailed and extremely well researched. The best book of it's kind.
No matter what era or subject it is very well covered here. Tells not only the story of this small coastal county but tells the real story of the founding of this nation and the triumphs and hardships of the founding fathers. Not afraid to point out the excesses good and bad of it's inhabitants this book is a must read for the serious reader as well as a casual reference. Not many books can say that. This book just made me want more!

I was expecting a droll history of Beaufort County and was pleasantly surprised by a very thorough and engaging account spanning three centuries. A must read for those wanting a strong foundation from which to view current events in coastal South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. Looking forward to 1861 and beyond.

San Antonio Police Lieutenant Rachel Grant is injured in the line of duty and is shot in the knee by the local drug lord. He gets away and starts a terror campaign against her thirteen-year old daughter, Lauren. Mother and daughter travel to their hometown of Saddle Gap where they can feel safe and Rachel can continue with her physical therapy.

Her return home yields a few surprises including the fact that her family has sold the family guest ranch Tumbleweeds to entrepreneur Stanley Fletcher. Rachel's peace of mind is shattered when Stanley is found murdered at Tumbleweeds. She isn't sure if the killer is local or the San Antonio drug lord who shot at her and her uneasiness increases tenfold when her cousin is found murdered in her grandfather's home. Unable to remain on the sidelines, Rachel decides to start her own investigation especially when she finds out that for some unknown reason Stanley left tumbleweeds to her.

HOME WHERE THE MURDER IS captures the ambiance of a small Texas border town to perfection. Rachel's relationship with her ex-husband and old friends as well as family rings true and makes the reader feel as if they know the characters that populate the book. Carolyn Rogers has written an excellent amateur sleuth tale and it is hoped that this is just the first installment in a new series.

I found this book in the library and after renewing it 3 times figured I'd better just buy it. I've checked out many garden plan books, but this one had the info I needed to plan for different seasons, how the plans would look in a few years, and what I needed to maintain the plants. It's specific to the Southeast so I don't waste time on plants that won't work for me. It's a great idea source and reference.

This book is an excellent guide for the new or veteran homeowner. It's filled with lots of ideas and a variety of plants including trees, shrubs, perennials, groundcovers and a few annuals. It offers a samples of typical planting scenarios for the home landscaper. Identifying each design as good for sun or shade and showing the variations is one of the best features. Seasonal variations are also helpful. But the best feature is that it clearly diagrams the placement of each plant including distance from the structure and distance from each other. Drawings and actual photographs of plants are also helpful. I highly recommend this book for the new or renovating landscaper.

Decent writing requires diligent effort. Writing also requires substantial practice and patience. This book offers the reader many solutions to common writing problems. This book is good for anyone who desires to learn more about how to write well. Any college student struggling to write a term paper or a professor who needs to learn more about the mind of a writer will find this book useful.

The ideas and methods contained in the book do not grow obsolete nor is this a book simply to be returned. It will be useful for years to come and provide comprehensive guidance on how to write efficiently and effectively.

Garrison's is a fine book for students or more experienced writers, one of the very best. I have used it as a classroom text for many courses in English composition with students from basic to advanced levels. Anyone who WANTS to become a better writer will learn a great deal from this slim, clear, concise, well-written volume. In fact, such people, using Garrison along with Peter Elbow's "Writing without teachers," will be well on the way to becoming better writers than they already are.

The "wedge" has always been the ugly stepchild of the British Sportcar family -- hence the few available books. Williams' book takes the point of view of restoring and keeping these cars on the road. It's not for the owner seeking concours information but the average owner will find all the right sections on uprating brakes, suspension, engine rebuilds, body shell repair and tuning. Particularly welcome are the chapters on Fuel Injection and the famous popup headlights -- common problem areas with heretofore few repair guides.

Every TR7/8 owner should have this book alongside the standard manuals. Resources recommended by Williams tend to be British and so North American owners will have to rely on the web to find suppliers.

Overall first class and highly recommended.

The rebirth of a hydrogen technology company
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-02-06
Hydrogen Homestead was a project developed in 1975 in Provo, Utah demonstrating a complete hydrogen energy system. Photovoltaic solar cells produced electricity that could be stored in batteries. The electricity from the solar cells powered electrodes that electrolyze water into Oxygen and Hydrogen. The Hydrogen was stored in a metal hydride of Iron-Titanium and Manganese (55% Ti, 44%Fe, 5% Mn), whose weight top out at 3950 lbs and the vessel store 68 pounds of hydrogen. The hydrogen powered fuel cells and was used directly to produce heat for cooking, warming, and cooling. Additionally, the hydrogen powered a lawnmower and a car. The elecrolyzer unit was based on SPE technology.

Hydrogen contains 1/3 the energy per unit of natural gas. Hydrogen has a low viscosity because of its small molecular size and for this reason it flows 3 times as fast through its orifice. In a hydrogen burner there is no carbon. The problem with hydrogen is that it burns to fast, forming nitric oxide concentrations. The solution is simple. At high temperatures, stainless steel mesh is an excellent catalyst for hydrogen combustion because it inhibits the mixing of hydrogen and air creating a high concentration of hydrogen around the burner. The result is nitric oxiding formation is eliminated.

The hydrogen internal combustion engine can provide equivalent power to a gas internal combustion engine with a few modifications. Without modification, an hydrogen burning ICE results in a 25 to 30% loss in power. The air intake in a hydrogen cylinder is 1/4 less volume than a gas based air volume. In a gas engine, the cylinder will occuppy 990 ml of air and 10 ml of gas, whereas, a hydrogen cylinder will have 750 ml of air and 250 ml of hydrogen. Power drops because there is not as much oxygen to react with the fuel. So, increasing power means getting a full charge of air into the cylinder through a technique known as Direct Cylinder injection (DCI). DCI fills the chamber with 1000 ml of air and then injects hydrogen under pressure into the cylinder. A computer control system monitors events and electronically causes actuators that regulate the flow of hydrogen into the cylinder. Dr Ridges discover a method using a solenoid which open and closed a valve, inhibiting and allowing the flow of hydrogen. Cutting power to the solenid opened the valve and power transmitted to the solenid closed the valve. DCI technology seems to have solved the power problem and computer technology seems capable of managing the ignition system.

Hydrid technology is stable. Dr. Billing points out that hydride storage systems are heavy. However, ECD has solved the problem of weight using Nanotechnology Carbon Wound Fiber tanks produced by a third party. The tanks are light weight and capable of maintaining pressures of 5000 psi. The next problem is refueling time. The current refueling time benchmark is eight minutes, five minutes is desired. However, if hydrogen slurry becomes a standard refuel times should be equivalent to gas refueling times. The final barrier to use hydrogen will be reducing the cost of hydrogen production and introduction of the new car technology into the mainstream market place.

A fuel cell is a device that converts hydrogen and oxygen into water while efficiently producing electrical power. More importantly, the higher efficiency of the fuel cell lowers the cost per mile of hydrogen to one-third the cost of fuel for an internal combustion engine. In a fuel cell hydrogen enters the anode as 2H and 2e; the hydrogen dissociates in the presence of the cathylst forming hydrogen protons and electrons; the hydrogen ions move across the membrane to the cathode and the electrons travel by electrical cable through the external load (electrical motor) to the cathode where they join with oxygen to become water. The hydrogen fuel cell car is competitive with the gas burning car. No new infrastructure is need to get started. Hydrogen fuel cell cars could be recharged overnight by the existing electric grid.

"This book is very inspiring! Written by a man ahead of his time who converted the first car to hydrogen in the 60's!.

He tells about his experience converting several vehicles and even an entire homestead to hydrogen.

It is filled with practical technical information from over twenty-five years of hydrogen research. It covers automotive conversions, hydrogen gas appliances, metal hydride storage, electrolysis, hydrogen fuel cells, and more.

Absolutely a must read for anyone interested in hydrogen as a fuel.

this book revolutionized my view of the world.

Dr. Billings is right on -- the future is as he sees it -- long live Dr. Billings, and his underground refugee colony.

Understanding atmospheric Hydrogen allows one to see the vision of the future -- free, and perpetual energy. Even if it means living underground as gnomes.

I found the book to be enlightening and ahead of its time -- look at the publication date, and think how right the Almighty Dr. is proving to be . .

I went to Coniston, England to see the area where Arthur Ransome wrote many of the Swallows and Amazon books. I found this book at the National Park store and used it to locate almost all of the locations from the books! Wildcat Island took me right back to my youth reading these books and dreaming of what it was like. Must have if you plan to visit.

Having read the first of Ransome's books in 1958, then learning that the places actually existed, it took me most of 50 years to get to the source.

Business travel took me to England a few years ago, so I went to the Lake District, as I'd wished to do for decades. I made it to Coniston, had a pint (or so) at the Black Bull & found the National Park bookstore & this book. It's the best of the lot sold there. I ended up with a couple of others, but this is clearly the best for people who wish to find the places described in the books.

I am so impressed by all the books in this series/line! My 18-month-old daughter loves them, and I even enjoy looking at them. There is almost always something I didn't notice the last time, and we both enjoy looking at all the things that are going on in every single picture.

Even the way the books are shaped is neat: the one about pirates is shaped like a pirate ship. The one about the old woman's shoe is shaped like a shoe. And so on. And the pages are some of the thickest I've ever seen in a board book, so I know they're going to last a long time if they stay dry!

I highly recommend any/all of the Charles Reasoner board books to other parents. They are utterly enjoyable as well as being very sturdy.

So adorable & fun!

My 2 year old loves this book! It is all about pirate mice who find a cat aboard their ship and they sail to cat island to drop him off there. The story rhymes to the tune of the famous "Yo Ho" pirate song. Each 'page' is packed with a treasure of things to look at, and is great to use for a game of 'I Spy'.
