A good Mr. Men bookReview Date: 2006-11-22
Mr. Noisy is a really noisy person (a big round red blob with hands, feet and eyes) who is rude to Mr. Butcher and Mrs. Baker (who are an item??;)). They then get together and conspire to change Mr. Noisy's rude and noisy ways by simply pretending they are deaf. After going to bed hungry (and with a little more encouragement) Mr. Noisy changes his brash ways and everyone is happy. Don't you love those happy endings?!

A Great Book for Discussing a Sibling's Feelings Toward a New BabyReview Date: 2005-09-21
The book has warm photographs of family members interacting with babies. These are useful in discussing what it will be like to have a baby in the house. I think this is an excellent book to read with children who are soon-to-be brothers or sisters.

Classic Kids' BooksReview Date: 2008-01-19
So, will your child love it? Probably so. Will you? Probably so, at first. For our part, my husband and I are growing a little weary of it. But in the land of childrens books, that's probably the best you can hope for, right?
The illustrations are fun and entertaining and the language is clear and fun. I'd give this as a gift again, or would certainly recommend it to others.
Proud Petunia PleasesReview Date: 2001-03-25
"Petunia" is a pleaser but gets a little too philosophical in the last two pages. That's okay-- the first pages and clean 1950s illustrations make up for it. A classic.
Appealing and quirky gooseReview Date: 2006-06-13
There is disaster and Petunia has enough sense to realise that she has not gained any knowledge from simply carrying a book around but must read what is within the pages.
An appealing and quirky book. Also try out Petunia's Christmas. Very good child appealing parables.

Strange and beautiful things told by a reliable witness.Review Date: 2004-06-07
Very trippy and exciting -- I read it from cover to cover in one long airplane flight.
Also, I think he's a very solid witness, unlike a lot of books in this genre. He's a research scientist, as well as having a serious interest in religious and existential questions, and it makes his voice much clearer and more convincing to me at least. His theorizing is a bit dodgy to me -- not wrong as much as not very predictive -- but certainly thought-provoking enough and enlightening to contemplate.
Highly recommended!

Interesting, Informative, Intriguing, InspiringReview Date: 2004-01-30
During a 180-foot fall high up on Mount Everest, Hart felt "perched on the cusp of time" as a great warmth and euphoria overtook him. He remembers thinking he was about to die and wondering why it felt so wonderful. "Space seemed warm, comfortable, full of light, even though there were no visible objects," he writes. In a later NDE, during an expedition in s Tierra del Fuego, he recalls another part of himself watching his freezing physical body as if from a telescope in another universe.
Because his NDEs and experiences of synchronicity, precognition, and telekinesis were life-altering, Hart began struggling with the materialistic ways of life, finding his jobs meaningless and boring while lacking the motivation to rise through the ranks of academia. Thus, he began a lifelong quest to understand the nature of consciousness. He encounters two gurus, one a Sherpa tribesman named Chombi and, while working in India, a yoga teacher named Guruji, both of whom help him make sense out of his experiences. Among other things, Chombi explains to him that the world we see, even time itself, is an illusion projected by the lower self and that if we are to experience the higher world, the lower self must be subdued. Guruji informs him that consciousness is composed of vibrations and that all matter is to some degree conscious. "We and the stars are part of the same field of vibrations," Guruji explains. "Separation is only an illusion."
An Indian physicist, Goswami, provids further enlightenment, helping Hart apply the lessons of quantum physics to the NDE. Hart, who seems to have a good grasp of quantum physics, has a number of "eureka moments" in which his experiences and observations begin to make real sense to him. One not well versed in quantum physics will likely struggle with his interpretations and explanations, but nearly everyone should get the gist of it.
"I am not the first person to realize that the mind survives the body, or that the reality of the universe is a marvelous field of information and infinite potentials, or that we ourselves create time by opening static time capsules in the field of information," Hart states. "But I had the joy of discovering these ideas independently before I was exposed to them by others." His discoveries make for a fascinating read.

Pirates - Predators of the Seas: An Illustrated History Review Date: 2008-07-18
Nice PrimerReview Date: 2008-03-16
One glaring omission is any discussion of the first attempts, begun by the Americans, and followed by the British, and ultimate success in defeating the muslim Barbary pirates of North Africa which had been a scourge of the Mediterranean for three centuries during which time over a million Europeans were stolen as slaves. Quite odd considering the author spends time explaining how pirating in the Spanish Main came to end once governments found it no longer in the interest.
Nevertheless, this a nice book, well illustrated, makes a nice primer, but one would need to go elsewhere to get more depth.
Great Book Of PiratesReview Date: 2007-12-19
A great resource and general historyReview Date: 2007-08-12
The text next moves to a general history of piracy from the Classical period. Beginning with Greek pirates such as the Aetolians and their descendants, the Cilician's it examines piracy in the Mediterranean world. Islamic pirates and their forbears are discussed.
The Vikings were the first `European' pirates and they were followed by the English. The first English record for the execution of a pirate dates from 1228. There were also pirates in the Baltic sea. Some of the worst pirates to plague Europe were the Barbary pirates from North Africa. As Muslims they raided as far as Ireland, taking Europeans as slaves to be sold in the markets of Algeria. But there was much mixing in the world of Piracy, the Barbaroosa Brothers, Christians, were famed pirates of the Mediterranean, working for the Turks. Malta, run by descendants of the Crusaders, also participated in Piracy.
However it was the British pirates such as Francis Drake and Sir John Hawkins who served queen Elizabeth that are well known to those interested in Pirates. Their precursors in raids on the `Spanish' new world were the French Huguenots of the 16th century. In the 17th century the Buccaneers who became the typical pirates of the age. Men from many backgrounds, usually protestant, found their way to Hispaniola in the Caribbean and began plundering Spanish shipping. The pirates of this period did not merely take vessels, they plundered towns in places such as Panama and lake Maracaibo, destroying the economy and the settlements.
The Golden Age of piracy in the early 18th century is given much coverage, as its notorious pirates such as Blackbeard, Edward Teach, Woodes Rogers and Jack Rackham. The death of Batholomew Roberts in 1722 ended the `Golden Age' of piracy. Many pirate crews were hung for their deeds. The next pirates to appear on the scene coincide with the American revolution. 1835 marked the last execution of pirates in the U.S. Chapter twelve examines the history of Piracy in Asia and 13 examines the nature of `Pirate havens' and their cultures, and bring the history up to the present with a discussion of piracy off Somalia, the straits of Malacca and elsewhere.
This is a brilliant book with many photographs both of old paintings and modern photos of forts and boats. There are a plethora of highly detailed and informative maps which make this more than a history of piracy but also a history of the New world and the world as well. The subject matter is interesting and stories well told.

Thumbs UpReview Date: 2008-02-11
It starts out by going into sab's upbringing, which was acually interesting, kind of all makes sense. youll know what i mean when u read it.
Than it quickly dives into some of sab's legendary illegals and stomping grounds for AWR and MSK. It also grazes into a few other peoples lifes and tells some things that most people dont know.
I only wish he told more. I guess i feel that i got the short story of it all and i was in for the long. Im also very dissapointed that he never really got into king AYERS story, kinda just skipped over him.
all in all, its a book worth picking up for the price.
to sum it all up:
amazing artwork. deep, funny look into the life. in kind of a short story form.

Amazing bookReview Date: 2002-02-09
"Since Henry Mondor's text in the 1940s there has been no another book written with such ease and wit about emergency abdominal surgery, an attractive battlefield for so many surgical recruits. Dr. Moshe Schein, a general surgeon with broad experience in New York, has presented a compact handbook useful even in the smallest rural hospital. The book is divided into three sections: Before the Operation, The Operation, After the Operation. This partitioning allows convenient access to pertinent information about the diagnostic and operative hitches frequently encountered in daily practice. In its turn each section of the book is divided into chapters devoted to acute abdominal diseases as well known as perforated peptic ulcer and as rare as Curtis-Fitz-Hugh syndrome. In spite of its semi-belletristic style, the monograph addresses each question with competence; even such a complicated subject as the pathophysiology of urgent surgical situations is very clear and understandable. The features of operative techniques for the different emergency surgical procedures and the management of the postoperative period are thoroughly elucidated.
I was unable to tear myself away from Moshe Schein's book, and I have learned much from it, in spite of my surgical maturity. This manual deserves to be readily available in every emergency service and operating room. Undoubtedly it will come to be highly useful for surgeons at every level, and not only for surgical "teenagers."
I complete my review with one of the aphorisms from the book: "It is more difficult to decide when not to operate than when to operate and what operation to perform." This sentence reflects exactly the substance of the book.
