I am a publisher author and illustrator, and I know first hand that this book works! How? Because it helped me to get where I am today! I have writers and illustrators asking me all the time how to get published, and I always direct them to this book. If you are a serious writer or illustrator, you NEED this book - not only does it have the names and addresses of countless publishers, it also has invaluable tips, and how-to's on everything from writing a query letter, to website design. I buy it every year, even though I no longer need it. I've purchased other "How to get published books" in the past, and none of them hold a candle to this one! Stop thinking about it and buy it!

While the internet provides writers with almost everything they need to succeed, there is still nothing to be found online that compares to this essential guide. Each year, Alice Pope and her crew deliver the goods, by scouring the publishing world for book, magazine and multimedia publishers that accept work from children's writers. Trust me, every successful agent and submitting author in the children's book field has a dog-eared copy of this book on the shelf. Plus, the articles that accompany the listings are of invariably high quality. A must-have.

The authors falsely advertise this book when they say 300 INCREDIBLE THINGS TO LEARN ON THE INTERNET. Instead, they provide 300 classifications with several URLs included in each classification. An estimate based on an unscientific sampling of the 300 classifications, the book provides gateways to over 1000 incredible things.

I tested a few in areas of personal interest like Astronomy and Election, and asked my family members to do likewise (their choices). The sites that each one of us entered we agreed were informative and in some cases very entertaining. We felt some of the URLs were too slow. However, generally, we all agreed this book is a great gift for the newcomer (are there any left?) and the youngster to use for fun and reference...

I love this Craft Show Information Book. It is a little GEM!
It leads me to the newest shows. It gives me information I am looking for. I have found some of the greatest shows I had never even heard of before. It should be right up front on Amazon.com for someone is looking for craft show information. It was hard to find on Amazon.[com] but suddenly it popped up and there it was.
I don't like the huge books that take you all over the country. I am not looking for that. I show in a six state area and The Craft & Art Show Calendar gives me all I need.
This truely is the most beneficial Craft Guide that I know of and need. It is easy to follow. Definitely a great craftmen's tool as well as a unique information book for the public to have! GO FOR IT! Dave

Every obscure airline is covered. I liked the way that each airline was given its own page. Specific information about vehicle identification numbers was not given, which I think helped clarify the presentation. Still, the fleet size by airplane type was there.

The alternate title of this book should be: THE ~COMPLETE~ AND ONLY GUIDE TO COLLEGE DEGREES BY MAIL AND INTERNET YOU WILL NEED TO READ. Excellent and up-to-date information regarding courses, tuition, residency requirements. I will FINALLY be able to confidently and comfortably select 'THE' Masters Program that is right for me! Tuition is quite varied and ranges from low to very high...Bears' Guide saved me the time and frustration of looking at schools with astronomically high tuition rates. If you are just beginning to look at Distance Learning programs, have been looking for awhile and are not able to make a decision, or you are just thinking about a DLP, this book is essential.

As I have been contemplating receiving my Bacherlor's degree through a University's Distance Learning Program, I was lost as to where to start. That is, until I found this book. BEARS' GUIDE TO COLLEGE DEGREES BY MAIL & INTERNET. John Bear's book contains listings of tons of colleges, that offer correspondence, independent study, and internet degrees. With information about each school, website addresses, e-mail addresses, etc. that make it easy for the interested party to find out everything they need to know. One thing that I recommend to everyone is to find out the accreditation agencies that support the schools listed before you sign up with them, as not all are regionally accredited. Overall, this was a fantastic book, and a must have for anyone who is interested in pursuing a degree through distance learning.

I have read this book, as well as a number of Bear's titles, and I find it very well researched (and quite readable), considering the fluid nature of the topic. John, daughter, et al are to be commended for a fine project!

John Bear is a nationally recognized authority in school accreditation and has appeared as an expert witness in many trial venues. His list of enemies is quite long, as he has been partly responsible for the closing of a large number of diploma mills and con-game colleges, hence the slanderous reviews. He has also been involved in advising (and occasionally running) non-traditional schools (no crime there) that never claim an accreditation they don't have. Some of these schools have done well, others have not. Some are still around, others are not. (Still - no crime there.)
College is nothing if not market-driven. (Welcome to America; that's how it is done here.)

It should go without saying, but anyone foolish enough to believe everything they read in a Google search is certainly in need of an education!

A book that changes lives!

Books by John & Mariah Bear have literally changed people's lives. This is no less true for this book. Although not quite the behemoth that the larger "Bears' Guide to Earning Degrees by Distance Learning (14th ed.), this book instead provides a tight focus on specific programs for those who either need a little more guidance or for whom smaller/less expensive works better. It still provides the same solid advice that readers have come to trust from the Bears.

College Degrees by Mail and Internet provides all of the information necessary to earn a degree (BA, MA, PhD) through distance learning. Now in its eighth edition, this book has stood the test of time.

If you're looking to change your life (more money, better work, etc), you need to check this book out.

Back when I was a youngster growing up in Columbus, Ohio my parents would often find relief from the heat by taking my family on monthly camping trips into West Virginia. I remember the shady trees and cool springs that were a second home to me, my two sisters and young brother.

Now that I have my own family complete with three young children ages 9,7 and 4 it is most important to me that they come to appreciate and respect the outdoors- especially W.V., where I spent so much time as a youth.

Of course, I remember the old campsites that I long ago visited; but my wife and I decided to explore more of the camping scene in W.V. While in a local bookstore, I came upon this camping guide of West Virginia by Johnny Molloy. This little treasure has been a great guide in our quest to search out new sites to visit.

This book is directly responsible for trips to Tomlinson Run (in the panhandle), Kanawah State Forest (near Charleston) and Bishop Knob (in the beautiful Monongahela National Forest). My wife and I hope to eventually visit all the camp sites in Mr. Molloy's book.

When I mention to the kids that we are going on a camping trip, I can't quite help but notice the thoughts of coming adventures and fun in their eyes and smiles. It reminds me of my brother and sisters some 25 years ago. Thanks to Mr. Molloy for his great stuff.

Best in Tent Camping: West Virginia

I just got back from the best trip! After sweltering most of the summer I decided to head for the cool mountains of West Virginia. A roommate in college was from there and suggested I go camping in the Mountain State. I found Johnny Molloy's book and away I went. I started in the south end of the state at Bluestone State Park. The lake was refreshing and the nights were much cooler than at home. After this I headed really high and went to Spruce Knob Lake, at 4,000 feet the highest campground in the entire guidebook. Oh, the weather was spectacular! I fished the lake and went hiking in the nearby Seneca Creek Backcountry. The trip to Upper Seneca Falls was idyllic. I tell you what -- I'm gonna try to get up there when the leaves turn, because West Virginia is the unsung outdoor jewel of the East. (make up name and place, someone from the South

I was anxiously awaiting the publication of this book for my May trip to WV. I picked a campground based on this guide, and once again I was not disappointed! The site was the best one I've camped at yet--very private, beautiful, peaceful, quiet--just as described in the book. The guide rates the campgrounds based on beauty, security, spaciousness, and quiet--four very important factors to me. It also describes campground costs, facilities, area attractions, and gives directions. I like knowing what the site will be like--fire ring or fire grate, picnic table, graded tent pad, etc. All of this information contributes to a great camping experience without unpleasant surprises.

This is the second great camping trip I've had thanks to Johnny Molloy. I also bought his guide to camping in the Smoky Mountains and was rewarded with another memorable vacation there. I will continue to use these guides to plan my camping trips, and I can't wait to see what the next published guide will be!

This book is a great resource. While I could give teachers the link to THWT website, passing around a paper copy has led to even more discussion, collaboration and interest. We had a copy out in the faculty lounge, and teachers from grades k-8 all found resources that were useful. Clear, well-organized, and easy to read, this is fantastic for teachers who want to spend 10 min. scanning or those who want a weekend of reading. It is helpful on both specific content links and more general resources. Get a copy for your library or faculty lounge!

Mobile technology does some wonderful things; forcing us to read through Internet pages on small screens while worrying about battery drain is not one of them. Tom Daccord offers history educators, library media specialists, and other interested readers a solution to this very problem with the most mobile, functionally-reliable technology of all: a good old-fashioned book.

Mr. Daccord's Best of History Web Sites is the perfect guidebook to help you plan and succeed on your journey through the varied and often challenging landscape of historical resources on the Web. Anytime, anywhere, the book's pages are yours to flip through, mark up, highlight, dog-ear, and re-read as you peruse the robust compilation of well annotated Web resources. Furthermore, the introductory chapters offer simple, concrete, and productive steps that you can take immediately to begin making your journey through history on the Web an easier, more efficient, and more engaging one.

Whether you consider yourself an adept online researcher, a novice Googler, or a bona fide Luddite, you can learn from this book and bring your skills with identifying and utilizing history Web sites in education to the next level. If only there were a book and accompanying Web portal like this for every subject!

Real mobile internet reference for the busy teacher!

Review Date: 2008-02-21
Tom Daccord has done a strange, but incredibly useful thing; he has delivered his tremendous online resource, www.besthistorysites.net, in book form. It is seemingly odd because you have to ask yourself why you would purchase a paper version of a website that you get for free online. The first couple of chapters, Locating & Evaluating History Web Sites and Integrating History Web Sites in the Classroom, cover very important ideas that are in tune with his other web site, Teaching History with Technology (www.thwt.org). This part of the book offers great overviews on how to seek out, vet, and use online resources for any teacher regardless of the subject. Mr. Daccord also discusses how to teach this in class. The meat of the book is valuable because it really lends itself to how teachers work.

I work as a Technology Coach for an elementary school district in a suburb of Chicago. As part of my job I am always trying to build connections with classroom teachers. One of the best ways for me to do that is provide them with easy-to- use resources that they didn't previously know about. When I got Tom's book I emailed all of our middle-school social studies teachers. I told them about Tom's book & suggested that if they had any upcoming units for which they wanted more online resources than they already had I would be happy to look them up in The Best of History Websites & pass them along. Within a few hours I got replies from almost every teacher with request for various topics like ancient civilizations in Egypt, Rome, & Greece, WWII & The Holocaust, The Cold War, The Middle East China and its culture, religion, economy, geography, history, government, and present status, various topics focusing on Europe, Vietnam, Civil Rights, Watergate to "New World Order" , The Post 9/11 World, and the second industrial revolution/ growth of cities late 1800s/early 1900s.

The next day I had teachers stopping in to borrow the book - and that's where I think the real value is in The Best of History Websites. Teachers do a lot of planning & note taking in places where they don't have access to the web, but this book makes thousands of web-based resources for teachers available for lesson planning at any time. As mobile as computing technology is, it's still lags, at least a bit, behind a book. And yes, I found one link that needed to be updated, but out of the 75 or so that I checked, that's a darned good ratio!

For teachers looking for new ways to integrate technology in the classroom Mr. Daccord has hundreds of helpful links, ideas, & suggestions too. There are specific lesson plans, online maps, teaching guides, and activities that extend outside the classroom. This book is a real goldmine.

Why buy an oxymoron?

I'm sure that anyone considering purchasing this tome has already become familiar with the remarkable "Best of History Website." The question that immediately comes to mind is why the oxymoron of a book about websites? There are three reasons: One is the comfort of reading through a book rather than scanning webpages. Anyone who flips through the 400+ pages will immediately be drawn in by the breadth and depth of the sites reviewed. The PBS, the BBC, the Library of Congress and The New York Times websites are well represented, but there are also many obscure, yet fascinating, sites included. The extensive index is a shortcut to discovering hidden gems. The second value of this book is as a step in the conversion of the technophobic social studies teacher. I brought the book to my faculty meeting and passed it around. It was wonderful to hear the little gasps of excitement from some of the, shall we say, mature teachers who didn't know that there were so many wonderful sites on Mesoamerica or The Great Depression. One colleague tried to abscond with it! The third value of this book is the excellent chapter "Integrating History Web Sites in the Classroom." This section summarizes the best-practice use of the internet in the classroom and gave me a number of ideas of ways to make better use of computers in my class.

This is exactly what I would expect of a book with this title. It's about time. Normally I would search in magazines, trade publications and newspapers for recommended web sites. This tended to be hit and miss. The BoTB Sites guide is concise, to the point and handy. I look up what I want the first time, rather than having to wade through countless search engine results (of which the majority are not pertinent to my search). I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't have all day to play on the web.

I found the internet a hassle to search. It could take hours to find anything pertinent and useful. On-line searches can give you alot of irrelevant results. So I invested in this book and I'm glad I did.

The best part about it was no surprises. The book is organized, well-written and up to date. The editorials let me know what to expect from each site so I can go to the ones I really want. Its a great internet tool that puts an end to the useless searches. It covers a huge range of topics and the spiral binding is a great idea. No more flipping the book to keep your page when you want to explore more than one site. Put simply --its my best search engine. I would recommend it to anyone who hates wasting time.

A Must-Have Web-Surfing Reference!

The main reason I purchased this book initially was because I was getting very frustrated using search engines on the web to find sites relating to topics I was interested in. Not only would the actual search take forever, I would then often browse through dozens of sites before I found what I was looking for. Well, no more!

This guide does what it promises to do...provide "the best of the best" sites on numerous subjects including activism, finance, health, law, and so much more! Not only has it cut down my surfing/searching time, but it's so handy to use. The coil binding allows it to lay flat for easy reference, the attractive layout makes it easy to find information, and the reviews are so informative, you know exactly what to expect from the site. I've even found some resources I didn't know were available; not just a shopping guide, but content-rich sites. For example, the sites on activism and philanthropy not only keep you informed on what's going on in the world, but how you can make a difference!

I also found the information on the travel and finance sites very helpful - there are so many of these sites out there and they've managed to narrow it down to the best I've seen yet. They've even included 10 wedding planning sites that I wish I knew about when I was planning my wedding!

I would highly recommend this guide to anyone who uses the internet - students of all ages, professionals, homemakers - anyone who wants to find "the best" websites without wasting a lot of time.

Excellent reference guide!

For the Christian writer, or for any writer with an ethical/moral basis informing their work, this (my copy is 2004) is an invaluable reference. It's user-friendly in the extreme, with a carefully drafted how-to-use section making the massive amount of information here more available and less daunting. Major sections include resources for writers, book publishers by topical category, periodicals by topical category, helps for writers, and an index/glossary section. Although the market analysis is quickly outdated, much of the information is useful over several years.

All Writers Should Purchase

I simply believe all Christian writers should purchase a copy of this book each year if they are truly interested in publishing in the Christian market. To my knowledge, there is no better book for the purpose of learning about and knowing the current market than this one.

Stuart does a remarkable job of keeping up with this ever-growing and changing field!

A MUST BUY!!!!

This is the best market guide I have found. Even better than the Writer's Market Guide. It is filled with useful resources for writers such as literary agents, writing conferences, contests for writers, writer's groups, web resources, etc. It's definately worth the money. Updated yearly. The author is very knowledgeable. A must for any writer even if your focus of writing is not Christian writing.

"Christian Writers' Market Guide 2002: The Reference Tool for the Christian Writer" is still the best market guide for anyone writing for the Christian market. Any writer committed to being published needs this book.

Similar the better known guides published by Writers Digest, Sally Stuart has compiled, organized and analyzed the various publishers and publications serving Christian readers. By "Christian," she includes protestant and Catholics, mainline and nondenominational publishers.

The Writers Digest guides simply do not have the depth and breadth of Christian publishers. You need the WD guides, but you need this as well.

You'll find entries for smaller, but important publications, like "World Pulse," the missions newsletter, as well as "Decision," a widely circulated magazine published by the Billy Graham people. You'll see also, "Our Sunday Visitor," "Commonweal" and "My Friend" (for Catholic kids). Any publisher you see in your church library is here, plus hundreds you might be new to. You'll see addresses, e-mail and website information, description of the publication, how much they pay, and what kinds of articles, poems and books they like to see.

I can vouch for the efficacy of this book, as through this guide I sold several poems.

Buying a new edition each year is necessary, as the information changes from year to year. Publishers move, editors move to new jobs, and publications might go out of business. The serious writer needs to keep up-to-date. With Stuart's book, updated annually, you can.

The continual frustration about this otherwise extremely useful book is the lack of a CD version. I would love to be able to sort through it all, and isolate those publishers who pay for poetry. It is cross-referenced, so you can see who is publishing environmental, evangelistic, eschatology, humor, romance--you name it.

She also has topical guide listings here for publishers of books, subsidy books, general markets, literary agents, contest, children's, conferences, pastors, and much more.

I fully recommend "Christian Writers' Market Guide 2002: The Reference Tool for the Christian Writer" by Sally Stuart."

Must Own Resource for Christian Writers!

Now there is someone who has made available and information resource for Christian Writers. Sally E. Stuart has compiled the comprehensive 'Christian Writers' Market Guide 2003' with all types of Christian publishing information. There is a large Christian market than one may expect and Stuart has researched this one well. You can only imagine the number of these markets are in access. I've added this to my much used and needed Writer's Resource shelf along with the 'Writer's Market' and 'The Writer's Handbook.' No Christian Writer should be without this valuable up-to-date marketing resource book.

This can be used by the first-time writer or the publishing veteran. It's essential if you're wanting to get published in the Christian community. The contents in it's pages is al you'll need from any resource. This reference tool is completely updated and revised with 1,138 publishing markets, 379 book publishers, 678 periodicals, 81 specialty markets (greeting cards, video, CD and gifts) and so on. There's much more from agents and foreign markets to internet markets to contest. There's additional resources for book promotion, submission guidelines, writers' conferences, workshops and groups. All this makes this the most complete and accurate resource of any kind. I've contacted at least three resources with good success. If you want to get your work published in the Christian market this is the book!

NOTE: An important rule mentioned in the book, DO NOT Rely Soley on the Information Provided in this Market Guide. It not intended to be complete by itself. It's important for your success as a writer that you learn how to use writer's guidelines and study book catalogs or sample copies before submitting to any publisher.

A wonderful guide book for people new to anime. Includes a overview of anime history; year by year breakdown of TV programs released in the States from the 60's to the 90's; a listing of videos released in the states (both in and out of print), and a listing of anime related clubs, retailers, and conventions. Dated now, but still a wonderful resource.

The absolute mecca for seekers of anime knowledge.

Trish Ledoux is an absolute genius, and it shows in the amount of information held within this relatively short TPB. I have never seen such a vast amount of information in so few pages. The Complete Anime Guide succeeds is giving a very thorough account of the Japanese artform without boring the reader.

The BEST Anime guide there is.

With out a doubt the most complete guide I've ever seen. Not only are most of the Anime tities cover with short synopses but history, fan clubs and retailer addresses are included. A superb book

The definitive source on anime released in North America

This is the best book on anime released in North America. The section on anime TV series is interesting as well as informative. It just about covers every series that aired on U.S. television. It also covers the vast genres of anime while it gives informative side notes. It also has brief synopses on a few anime titles as well as a listing of all titles released up to December 1995. To sum it up, I believe that this is the definitive source on anime released in North America. The authors really did their homework in writing this book

An essential, if imperfect, guide for Anime fans.

This is solid an knowledgeable work, and an excellent resource for anyone new to Anime (Japanese Animation). The first half of the book covers the history and culture of Anime, and is thorough and well-researched. The second half gives quick synopses of the Anime titles available on video in the US. This section is slightly weaker: it is dating rapidly (unavoidable in such a work), and the synopses tend to be back-of-the-video stuff and not always too informative. On the whole, though, well worth buying.
