Angus, Brian & and the boys from the DC have spent their careers hewing pure uncompromising rock from the Mountain from whence all rock doth spew. Toiling nonstop they form the rock into blistering music that is like a blunt mallet crashing into your girating skull. This book chronicals the long careers of the lads who feel just as comfortable rocking out as hanging about in the stroh with their mates. This book will assault you like taking dope, speed, coke, two shots of bourbon and afterword you will say right I'm ready.

Love Is Blindness; I Don't Want To See...

This is a book that will appeal to U2 fans of all types, but particularly musicians interested in their work. The book consists of a brief narrative, lyrics for the songs from "Achtung Baby," and musical transcriptions and guitar tablature for each of the songs on the album.

The photographs (both black and white and color) are excellent and truly capture the mood of this excellent album, as does the narrative and the selected quotations from the band members.

The guitar parts are well defined and easy to read, and are, to the best of my ability to discern, quite accurate. Particularly outstanding are the transcriptions of "One" and "Love Is Blindness," although I may be a bit biased, as those are also my two favorite tracks on the CD.

This book is great for any U2 fan, but is especially great for fans who are also musically inclined; to those in either group I recommend this book.

A great primer of the making of this ground breaking album.

Beautiful Anton Corbjin photographs and anecdoted by the band, manager and producers. A must have for a true fan - you get a true feeling for the historic atmosphere of Berlin '90, and Dublin '90-'91.

Third Side of a Public Saga

I must say that I am a die-hard devoted John Lennon fan. His music and persona has had a lasting effect on my life. I was truly eager to read this book, and did so in a two day period. It made for a very interesting read. I had heard the stories and read all the interviews dealing with the "lost weekend". I always wanted to hear the other side. Not one that Yoko had contrived, nor one that John had relayed (at Yoko's bidding). This book brings the reader extremely close to a John Lennon few were allowed to know. Some wouldn't have wanted that luxury. This book shows a woman who was fascinated by, in love with, and terrified by John Lennon. Accounts of his loving nature and his horrifying fits of violence are here for all to see. It also allows the reader to see that Yoko had almost complete control over John. She knew his insecurities, and played on them. The book also details a woman's hopes and dreams for someone she truly loves. Hopes that perhaps through her love, John would become fully independent and functional as an adult. The book also depicts an almost voyeurist view of John and May's love life. In this book, you can see that John was a loving, gentle, child-like, caring man, but on the flip-side, a violent, remorseful, and controlled man. Many times I asked why May would put up with John and Yoko's mechinations. But, it is abundantly clear that May truly loved him, and wanted what was truly best for John. And what was best for him, was not always best for her. Definitely a great love story. One stopped short by Yoko.

You have to look hard to find references to May Pang in books about John Lennon. She's not mentioned in Anthony Fawcett's "John Lennon: One Day at a Time" or in the booklet that accompanied the recent "Lennon Anthology" boxed set. Even in the coffee table book "Imagine: John Lennon," May Pang is simply referred to as a "constant companion." It seems that Pang is gradually being erased from Lennon's personal history and the official story of Lennon's "Lost Weekend," is the one approved by his widow, Yoko Ono.

This is the story of Lennon's 18 month affair with Pang, a relationship she claims continued even after Lennon returned to his wife. On his "Lost Weekend," he traveled with her to L.A. to record music and party with other musicians like Harry Nilsson. It was a boozy, decadent period that saw Lennon ejected from a nightclub for interrupting a performance and generally hit the bottle in a manner in which he hadn't since he was a youth. Sadly it confirms something often glossed over in other Lennon biographies - That Lennon was a mean drunk. The man of peace could turn into a foul-mouthed, dangerous, nasty and violent drunk who needed to be tied up by his friends until he sobered up.

Pang writes of their relationship with affection and brutal honesty. Her pen chronicles, not only the facts but her emotions and reactions to the events as they unfolded. It's a lesser known fact that she was the Lennon's personal assistant in the early 1970s and she recounts stories about the making of the original "Imagine" film and Yoko's experimental films like "Fly." However, it's the Lost Weekend period that really makes this book a worthwhile purchase. Yoko can never write about this time because, for most part, she wasn't there. Pang was. She writes about: the "Rock and Roll" sessions with madcap record producer Phil Spector; Lennon's difficult relationship with first wife Cynthia and son Julian; the booze sessions with Harry Nilsson including the infamous incident at the Troubadour Club; the "Walls and Bridges" album and the comeback performance at Madison Square Garden with Elton John. While with Lennon, she also encountered other rock celebrities and tells of the times Lennon holidayed with Keith Moon and Ringo Starr, socialized with Mick and Bianca Jagger, played music again with Paul McCartney, got verbally berated by George Harrison, met David Bowie, recorded with Elton John, upset Paul Simon and annoyed the Smothers Brothers.
Pang also debunks some of the common stories we hear about John and Yoko and while she is forgiving of John, portrays Yoko as a manipulative, scheming dragon lady. An image, not unfamiliar to Beatle fans, and one which Ono has tried hard to erase.
For those fans seeking a personal view of Lennon, unauthorized by the Lennon estate, then this book is an excellent title that sits comfortably next to "A Twist of Lennon" by his first wife, Cynthia.

This is a very well researched and chronicled book. During the writing of Adventures in Hi-Fi, the authors found my black and white photographs of R.E.M. published on my website and contacted me about using them for the book. I no longer had the exact date of when the photos were shot, but they knew. It's awesome to see R.E.M.'s journey all laid out in this well organized book. A labor of care and love, great work by Rob Jovanovic and Tim Abbott!

My friends bought me this book for my 18th... I love them so much! This is an absolutely fantastic book!
It has detailed information of the bands history... from their early days of jamming together to what they are now. It also outlines the unfortunate circumstances under which Bill Berry, the band drummer, left the band.

It is well illustrated, with plenty of odds and ends to keep all R.E.M. fans satisfied. At the end, it even has a table showing how their singles and albums faired on the UK and US charts!

It's a long read, but it's a blast all the way through. If you call yourself a fan of the best band in the world, you need to get this book!

I heard about this book from the mom of my daughter's friends and decided to check it out from the library. I'm always looking for wholesome, yet exciting, books to keep my kids interested. Flipping through the books first hand isn't a bad idea either. The book is just a tad thin, but very funny. It was like sitting back and watching my own kids. There was adventure and humor throughout and it always had little surprises. There aren't any disastrous things that you might be worried about your kids reading and its just plain fun to read, even for adults. If your kids like humor and adventure, I highly recommend this book. I looked up the author's website the other day and found that there is a sequel coming out soon and two teen horror books as well. Part 2 seems extremely interesting from the teaser in the back of volume one and I cant wait to find out what happens to the older sister. It cant be true. You can find a little more information about this author at : cacaldwellbooks.com . It looks like a fun site.

Alec Campbell's African Rock Art: Paintings And Engravings On Stone, superbly and profusely illustrated with more than two hundred examples of David Coulson's color photography, spectacularly and informatively showcases Africa's rock art with examples drawn from the entire continent. The text provides the reader with an authoritative and "reader friendly" historical and interpretative analysis. Alec Campbell draws upon his many years of experience as the founder and former director of the "National Museum of Botswana", and is a resident of the area. David Coulson is founder and chairman of the "Trust for African Rock Art" and combines his special expertise with skills as a photography to provide a visual record of outstanding works, many of which are now endangered by erosion, theft, and vandalism. African Rock Art is an impressive and much appreciated addition to personal, academic and community library African art history and cultural studies collections.

A Masterpiece

This impressive book by photographer David Coulson and co-author Alec Campbell is a comprehensive study of the rock paintings and engravings of the African continent.

Chapter I deals with the history and peoples of Africa, with special chapters on the Bushmen and Bantu-speaking people. Chapter II is a discussion of rock art and speculations on who the artists were, including the latest research.

Chapter III explores the styles, subject matter and the specific rock art sites, whilst Cheaper IV is devoted to dating. Chapter V deals with Southern Africa under heading for Zimbabwe, Namibia, the southwestern Cape, the Maluti and Drakensberg mountains, the inland plateau and the Tsodilo hills.

The following two chapters are devoted to Eastern and Northern Africa respectively, whilst Chapter VIII discusses the geometric designs and the style called Late White paintings. Chapter IX considers aspects of preservation and the future of Africa's rock art.

The book contains 400 full colour photographs and line drawings plus 7 maps. These photographs also include living people and animals. The maps depict Africa, the language groups, African peoples, the distribution of rock art on the continent, and the specific distribution in Southern, Eastern and Northern Africa respectively.

This classic work concludes with a glossary, bibliography and index. I would also like to recommend the books The Cave Of Altamira, edited by Antonio Beltran, and The Mind In The Cave by Lewis-Williams.

Age Determination of Young Rocks and Artifacts: Physical and Chemical Clocks in Quaternary Geology and Archaeology

Review Date: 2007-12-16
The book provides a reader with a very complete introduction to physico-chemical methods of datation. The book contains clear and complete explanations of terminology and methodological basis (geology, as well as physics) allowing the beginning reader to understand the essence of described methods and their limitations. Many additional information make it also an excellent handbook to specialists. One can find here practical advice, common traps, datation possibilities vs. archaeological and geological materials and enlarged references. It is a really good example of German precision and exactitude.
I strongly recommend this book to all archaeologists and naturalists. It could be also a very educative piece of reading for students and non-specialists interested in the subject.

A Well Balanced Introduction to Archaeometry
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2000-03-27
Within this book's content, several qualities are united which make it not only the best aviable introductory textbook into such crucial topic for archaeology and anthropology, but a truly unique contribution that transcendes the compromistic exposure of subject which could be found within more formal textbook.

First, author provided brief but quintessential introduction into the very fundaments of physical and chemical properties which are relevant in those phenomenons which enable exegesis of temporal relations in the form of absolute chronology.

Second,a highly critical disscusion is given for selected materials and their specific characteristic, with conclusions about dating methods which are most appropriate, plus refference to other part of the book which deals with dating methods per se,and this was a very wise choise in semantical organisation, since it enables easy refference to particular issue.

While one could think of style as something not important with regard to books that are dealing with hard science, this is not case here, because author truly suceeded in making his presentation inteligable to readers who are not experts in nuclear physics, but are obliged to know fundaments, methods, and logic of age determination process in quaternary geology-geologists,anthropologists,paleontologists,archaeologists.

Students of these sciencies have often difficulties in finding materials of explanatory, introductory, practical and bibliographical kind, since it is often too fragmentated to be easily obtained.Up to this day, this book is absolutely the best for that purpose.

Finnaly, one must mention that within entire content, one persistant quality is wide diapazon of perspectives on subject-ranging from theoretical and empirical foundation,to such practical aspects as proper taking of samples.Richly illustrated, with strong bibliographic back-up,this is book that is definitely the most accurate scrutinisation of quarternary age determination, and one needs to follow progress in the field from other, more proptly informative sources-corections in calibration, development and refinement of method etc.-but no more to seek for book that synthetises this area of science in a fashion that is both approachable and also professional.

Atlantan Vicky Alvear Shecter wrote an extraordinary book about Alexander the Great - Terry Naughton illustrated it extraordinarily!
If these 2 don't partner up and do more, I'll be flabbergasted!
This is a history of Alexander the Great - one that really should be read by kids of all ages, those that hate papyrus dry written history, or those of us who love history - This is an irreverent, fun, and most informative view of Alexander, his family, his triumphs, his legacy. And it's a hoot.
I am a student of history and I loved the ease that Ms. Shecter wrote and got it all down on paper -
PLEASE - continue this series - think how many fun historical people and eras need this type of book! We'd all be scooping them up!
Prehistoric series
Ancient series

Written by Vicky Alvear Schechter and illustrated by Terry Naughton, Alexander The Great Rocks The World is a historical biography of legendary conqueror and emperor Alexander the Great. Written especially for adolescents and teenagers, Alexander The Great Rocks The World chronicles the events of Alexander's life, his military conquests, his ideals of unity, his battle tactics, and much more in detailed yet plain-spoken vernacular language. Black-and-white representations of classic artworks and illustrations add a visual touch to this fascinating, easy-to-follow accounting of how Alexander the Great literally changed world history. Of especial interest are the concluding sections that compare Alexander's heroic and villainous legacies - he spread the Greek ideal (if not practice) of democracy, was committed to tolerance, and respected women more than most of his age; but then, he also crushed the practice of democracy in Greece and instigated bloodshed in the form of war and conquest. Enthusiastically recommended especially for grade school and YA library collections.

Not only an awesome cd and music video, but an excellent addition to a guitarist's repertoire, naturally. Although requires more of an advanced level (atleast not just starting out) of guitar playing to play through flawlessly like Cantrell, this is also good for beginner's to "get better" (of course with right practice), once you learn atleast 5 songs out of this book, you'll be hooked on playing everything by AIC. Very soulful music, especially Nutshell and Over Now. Cantrell Rocks!!! (so does the studio musician-guitarist 2)

Even more great to play than to hear...

As a very huge Alice fan, I think that this is a necessity for any person wanting to complete a memorobilia collection by the band. But for those who can make use of this book (it's demeaning to call this anything short of "a work of art") then this book is definately for you. I would have to say that even the guitarist just starting out would have a field day in this book, due to it's simplicity and content. It wasn't hard for me to learn the entire thing in a week, it's just that simple. And it's also hard to comprehend some of the strums, the synchronized playing (if with two guitarists, that's the way the book is written) but the old credo "practice makes perfect" comes into play there. I give a high rating to this song folio due to it's layout, simplicity, correct tabbing, and the addition of the bonus track (killer is me) which most artists would not do in many circumstances. Every song in here matches the Unplugged cd (I've checked) and each song in here is correct. I suggest this songbook to any guitarist that wants to know how to play something new, but mainly i recommend this to the guitarist who wants to play something fun, trust me, you can have a very enjoyable expirience learning something light like this. If your first impulse is to buy this thing, go for it, because you will not be let down at all.
