This is a piano/vocal song book for the album of the same name. I first listened to BarlowGirl, three very talented sisters, on the recommendation of someone at my local Christian bookstore, when I was looking for music for teenage girl voices. What I found was an interesting, inspiring collection of both horizontal and vertical worship songs that I seldom tire of hearing. The song book is great because the arrangements match the album but are still manageable. The album has a number of songs done accoustically, so the book makes them easy to reproduce for your own enjoyment. I don't sound young and hip like BarlowGirl, but listening to their music, and being able to play it, makes me think about taking my own music higher.

BG is by far the best Christian Rock band I've heard! THeir harmonies are perfect, and thins music is very easy. I've already memorized a lot of piano parts and guitar parts, just because I love it. Please don't delay/hesitate to get anything BarlowGirl. I can't wait for their next CD! (And I know their producer, Otto Price, and he rocks too! Part of the credit to this album should go to him! GO OTTO! GO BG!) Thanks!

This one is good 'Enough' for me.

If you liked the first Barlow Girl CD, you'll like this on too. Their music has a full, tight sound and great harmonies. I absolutely love their version of 'Enough'. Most of the other songs were just fair to good. And some of them seemed a bit despressing. But I'm still giving it a 5-star rating because of the song 'Enough'. It's a really great song, and they did a fantastic job on it both musically and vocally.

Love it!

I love this book. It not only has the greatest songs in it, but it actually includes the notes for the harmonies! The pages are easy to read and follow, and the songs sound great. I used several songs from the book in my church as choir introits. Its a little lower than on the CD, but still a fantastic book.

An instructional course that is actually effective

Review Date: 2008-02-25
I can honestly say of all the instructional books I've purchased over the years (Near a hundred now), none have been as helpful as this book: Bass Extremes with Victor Wooten and Steve Bailey.

I bought this at a point where I had pretty much mastered the Flea and Claypool kind of slapping, and was looking for something to take my playing to the next level. Victor's "Super Bass Solo Technique" video was a great watch, but wasn't much help. This book however, offered a much more step-by-step kind of learning with clear and concise descriptions of the techniques and how to achieve them. With a little practice, this book makes it easy to incorporate Victor's open-hammer-pluck technique, as well as the double thump into your playing with stunning results. Never has my playing grown in such leaps and bounds than it did with this book.

The few downsides, well a lot of the tunes are performed on Victor's 4 string tenor bass, which almost nobody has readily available to them. Restringing with a lighter gauge and retuning may be necessary if you want to play the tunes exactly as they are performed. Even worse, all the Steve Bailey material is arranged for a 6 string fretless bass. So if you walked into this lesson armed with your fretted 4 string, you're pretty much SOL when it comes to Steve's lessons, not that they are any less amazing because of it.

The best part is that the tunes you are learning are well thought out and masterful pieces of bass music that are genuinely interesting. In fact you'll find yourself listening to the CD just to hear the songs, not necessarily with the intention of learning them. I feel that these eight tunes are some of both player's best work.

Overall for the most down to earth and hands on lessons from true masters of the bass, this book/CD is the best there is. I highly recommed it.

I think this one is Victor's best CD. GREAT music for kids!

I bought this at the music store and although I've also got A Show Of Hands, Yin Yang and the Bass Extremes Cookbook CDs, this is the one I play the most. The structure of it is 12 songs, with Victor and Steve Bailey and Jack Bissonette playing with very different feelings, then an intro with tuning tones and 12 brief interviews, re-sequenced, with Wooten and Bailey describing the techniques used on each song.

These Songs Are ASTOUNDING. And, IMHO, stronger than Cookbook, by the same guys. "Thumb Start My Harley" cracks my son up and makes my wife tap her foot, and has a drum solo that justifies the whole idea of drum solos. A Chick From Corea is a series of musical jokes derrived from Chick Corea's music, and again, makes you smile, tap your foot and nod your head in disbelief- are you realling listening to a drummer and two electric bass players with nothing else??? Emerald Forest and Moon Ridge are lovely, gentle explorations and Madonna Lee is the classic (Donna Lee) revisited. Every song is gem.

Part of the strength of this CD is that each piece is built around a technique that Wooten and Bailey want you to hear, an once they've displayed it and had fun with it, they stop. No boogieing on. Its virtuosity on display. For $10 more than a regular CD its well within affordable and you can give the music book to someone who reads music- all the songs are there in all their glory. Not that you'd be able to exactly sit down at a piano and play this... although that would be pretty wild too. Make that two pianos...

As a listener, the how-to sections are interesting too, since they take appart their interactions and explain what each is doing and how it meshes with the other two. If you want to know how jazz (or any other collaborative art) is created, these little seqments, recorded after the actual pieces, are mostly pretty illuminating.

But even if you just play the instrumental tracks this CD is a joy to own and treat to share. And great way to share humor and complexity and unique vision with other music fans. It's particularly superb while driving along highway 395 in the Mojave Desert, with the family, silly and beautiful and unexpected.

CORRECTION! There are 8 songs, here's the list of tracks

I wrote my review (which you kindly posted) from memory but I mis-remembered how many tracks there are on the CD. There are actually 8 songs, an intro to the lessons, then 8 lessons:

1) A Chick From Corea
2) Bangkok Blues
3) Stan The Man
4) Victor's Jam
5) Thumb Start My Harley
6) Exerald Forest
7) Moonridge
8) Donna Lee

9) Introduction and tuning

10) Lesson 1: A Chick From Corea
11) Lesson 2: Bangkok Blues
12) Lesson 3: Stan The Man
13) Lesson 4: Victor's Jam
14) Lesson 5 Thumb Start My Harley
15) Lesson 6 Emerald Forest
16) Lesson 7 Moonridge
17) Lesson 8 Donna Lee

To VERY briefly summarize the material:
A Chick From Corea is about triplets and 'country and western' sound. Victor plays the melody, while Steve plays chords.

Bangkok Blues finds Steve playing etheral false-haromonics over Victor's anchoring funky blues, then Victor plays hammer-ons over Steve's fretless chording.

Stan The Man: Dedicated to Stanley Clarke. Victor plays a tenor bass- ADGC - against Steve's chords, both take solos at the same time. The chord progresson starts gently so you can hear it, then they crank it up.

Victor's Jam: A funk workout from Victor and drummer Greg Bissonette.A range of techniques is used to keep with the drummer

Thumb Start My Harley: With Steve's fretless played through wicked distortion (like Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days") over Victors pumping foundation, which turns into competing, over-the-top triplet solos. Jack Bissonette's emphatic drumming morphs into a VERY complex solo, in correct time. As Steve says in the lesson intro, "If you think you have good time, pat your foot all the way through that at the tempo of the song and you
should come out right. Until you do, keep trying!" Victor will later explain how he does the very funky "open-hammer-pluck".

Emereld Forest: Victor arpegiates chords through sweet reverb while Steve's fretless sings a sitar-ish melody.

Moonridge: Steve's solo, a study for the right hand (6 string fretless) keeping the D string going, with chords and harmonics. If you had thought there were any limitations to electric bass this should put those fears to rest.

Donna Lee: Victor plays the scales using thumb and index finger, using thumb-down, thumb-up, index finger triplets. The scales are sewn together in the familiar tune, while Steve pays the chords that Charlie Parker copped from "Indiana" to support it. DENSE, with some call and response at the end. (Another take on the same classic tune appears as "Madonna Lee"
on the "Cookbook" cd.

The book/cd has some great tunes on it, and that alone is enough reason to pick it up. However, there are a few mistakes here and there in the transcriptions, but these are in places where they are just improvising anyway, so it doesn't really matter. It's good music to improve your technique on without sounding like fretboard exercizes.

Well im playing bass for 4 years now, and as being so i really recomend this book. This is definetly not for beginners, but more for advandced bass players. Wooten explains some cool stuff for those who want to play funky stuff and Bailey is the living Pastoruius. The songs are really cool and even cooler, you got the notes to them and the coolest they explain what they actually do both on the cd and the book. Go ahead.

This series of books by Marshall are a worthy addition if you are an experienced player who is already familiar with the songs and know the lyrics. The lyrics are NOT available with this book. Once you have figured out the method to the transcriptions, it opens up a wonderful insight on the Beatles.

If your looking to play Beatles, this -- and the companion book -- is the place to go. Marshall has done a great job capturing the Beatles sound, and the combination of CD and transcripts make for a quick learning curve. By adjusting the balance control, you can mute the lead and play along with the backing track. The book also contains a couple of paragraphs on each song featured -- background, innovations, who is playing what, etc. You get a sense that this was a labor of love for the author, and the final product refects it.

There are perhaps numerous books that devote itself to this subject but not many explore material by the Beatles via critical analysis. That's odd when you consider the most important aspect of this band despite all the hype was the quality of its work. However- "The Beatles An Illustrated Record" by two well respected pop music journalists by the names of Carr and Tyler does so. Both critique each album, extended play, and/or single by Harrison, Lennon, McCartney, and Starr then relay to those of us who read such reviews the artistic value this entity possessed. Biographies- rather they be authorized or otherwise- are all good and well but what matters most is what the Beatles were most revered for. This book argues the relevance of this quartet in its almost exclusive discussion of the musical legacy they left behind.

One of my first Beatles books ever

I give this book 5 stars, buit I must admit that this rating is based on sentimental value.

"The Beatles An Illustrated Record" was one of the first Beatles books I ever owned. Must have been around 1977/1978. I remember the day I first saw it at Barrett's Bookstore in Stamford, CT. I begged my mom for it, and a short time later my specially-ordered copy arrived.

I can't say much for the text. I was a kid at the time and wanted it because it was so chock-full of great, large-sized, color photos. Being an artistic type who gravitated towards pictures more thant words (haven't changed a bit!), this book was a visual treasure trove for a budding Beatles fan.

I do recall reading some harsh reviews of some of Paul's and George's albums. The one that stands out in my mind is the review of George's "Living In The Material World"... where George is lambasted for forcing his religious beliefs upon the poor listeners! LOL.

I also received an updated copy, this time in paperback, a few years later. It had an additional section in the back about the death of John Lennon.

I'd not mind seeing this book updated and re-released. But this relatively thin book would be JUST a teeny bit thicker 25 years or so after its first publication!... which would be fine.

Two English Rock Critics View the Beatles' Work and Lives

This book started me listening to the Beatles again, with more appreciation than ever. Each of the group's recordings (and films) is reviewed, accompenied by contemporary biographical info and photographs. The authors' inside knowledge of the English rock scene--and the Beatles' place in it--is invaluble. A "US Disography" is provided to help American fans relate the jumbled US releases to the originals. The book could have been much longer. I wanted more factoids such as Lennon's amusing reply to the circa-1963 query, how long would the Beatles last?--"About five years."

A really cool Beatle book originally released in the mid-70's. Lots of beautiful glossy photos (color and B&W) with opinionated reviews of all the original (British) LPs, EPs, singles and solo releases through 1975. The authors genuinely love the Beatles. The tone of their text, while occasionally harsh, is overwhelmingly objective and accurate. (They reserve their most brutal criticisim for solo LPs such as Paul's "Ram" and George's "All Things Must Pass". I'd be willing to bet they've changed their opinions with a quarter century of hindsight). Whether or not you agree with Carr and Tyler's views, you'll undoubtedly find them to be witty and almost always amusing. Also included is a rudimentary review of the Liverpool/Hamburg years, a great photo montage of the legendary Shea Stadium show (August 15, 1965) and a summary of popular Beatle bootlegs. Overall, "The Beatles: An Illustrated Record" stands out because of its magnificient array of photos and the authors' brief, but well-written text. This book's long out of print, so snatch it up if you find a used copy.

At first I was a little hesitate to purchase this book considering that I have over two hundred books on the subject of the Beatles, however, I'm glad that I did since this book stands out from the others. Definitely, it's informative as a reference guide, and it includes a large amount of rarely seen and unseen photos of the Beatles together and apart. Also, the appearance of it is quite attractive with its lavish hardcover; moreover, the beautiful black and white, and colorful photos that it contains. Without a doubt, if you're either a die-hard or casual fan, then you should definitely purchase this book, and place it next to the other valuable Beatles items that you may own.

I picked up this book on a whim for my 2 year old who is obsessed with the Beatles. However, I have spent several hours myself looking through it and I love being able to read about the stories behind the pictures, even if she cant enjoy them yet. The pictures are brilliant and the size of them is also good, no squinting to see whats going on. I would recommend this book to any Beatles fan, and to anyone else who wants to know more about them, not only as a band but as individuals.

I love this collection of Beatle photographs taken from early in their careers to the post-Beatle years. (I have two copies of this book - the first one has a chronology that stops in 1999-2000, when George was still alive and the second one includes George's tragic demise in 2001).

I love the way a Beatle song is used as a title for each chapter. The photos are well documented and include many people who crossed paths with the Beatles, such as Harold Wilson, Ed Sullivan (of course) and many lesser known people.

The book also provides a rich history for each year that is being covered. Events are chronicled in the chronology and is a very "Beatle friendly" gauge indeed. The Beatles' travels and events regarding same are recorded. There are two pictures of George, packing his "Beatle Bag," with the picture captioned about how BOAC provided the Fabs free flights from England to France provided they advertised with those bags. Harold & Louise Harrison, Sr. are shown, sending their son off to America proudly and lovingly. These make a good book even better.

Many of these photographs had not seen the light of day prior to the publication of this wonderful book. No Beatle fan should be without this one!

Yes, it is one of the best Beatles photo albums I've ever seen. It covers that period from 1963 through the breakup and to George's death in 2001. Some of the pictures are familiar, others aren't. It's a wonderful journey to start at the beginning and see the Beatles' milestones and how they change. We see their early exuberance and eagerness to please by posing in showbizzy poses in matching suits, being feted and receiving endless awards. They morph into the ultimate cool icons, hair growing shaggier, clothes weirder. Their relationships are chronicled. First it was Cyn, Jane, Patti and Mo. Then it was Linda and Yoko. Eventually Patti and Maureen were replaced by Olivia and Barbara. I love the early pictures of the women - all those wonderful dolly dresses and Patti's amazing eyes. (I was sooo jealous of her!). The pictures thin out after the breakup. There are intermittent photos of the individual Beatles and their families (mostly Paul) through the 70s, 80s and 90s. The last photo in the book is the sad photo of Paul the morning George died. There are almost no photos of the Beatles taken in America so it cannot be called a comprehensive collection. After all, this was the English press (Daily Mail and AP)and a lot of these photos never made it stateside until now. One thing that historians will note is the plethora of shots from the middle '60s showing just how important they were during that time. I'm so happy to have come upon this book. It is highly recommended for Beatles fans both who remember when and who want to know what it was like.

Awesome Collection of Rare Photos

This is a collection of rare Beatles' photos taken from pre-1964 to a period 'after the Beatles.' Each chapter of the book is titled after a Beatles' song (e.g. chapter four is titled "Hello Goodbye").

The photos have descriptions beside them giving an explanation of what is going on in the pic, where it might have been taken, who is in the pic, and other facts that might pertain tom the pic such as record stats, radio shows, TV programs, etc.

Periodically throughout this book a chronology of a certain year (i.e. 1968) will be shown. The chronology explains what happened on certain dates or days in that year. For instance, in the 1968 chronology, on 23 August it states "Ringo quits the Beatles during the recording sessions for the White Album."

The book contains 600 photographs selected from the archives of the 'Daily Mail." The book contains over 200 photographs from negatives never previously printed and are said to be printed here for the first time.

The pictures in this book are pics taken at parties, vacations that each Beatles member took alone, or together, recording studio shots, candid shots (some of these are just plain terrible, but fun to see), and many other various settings. This is a great book for Beatles' fans, and a must for hard core Beatles collectors.

First let me say what a wonderful book this is. I bought it thinking of it as a reference, but ending up reading it cover to cover. There are many stories that run through the book, John, Paul, George, and Ringo's lives, for sure, but you can also follow the legal cases (I never knew Apple records sued Apple Computers, and got an undisclosed settlement!), the tours, the press bickering and the love fests in the press.

I found the organization exceptional. While an index would have been nice (maybe for future editions), I didn't really need it. My favorite activity while reading this book was to follow various threads from entry to entry. So, when John wrote a letter to Melody Maker, that is noted and you are directed to the subsequent dates to find out the response, etc. I found this to be fun and engaging. All in all, a wonderful book.

If you need to know every activity each Beatle has participated in from the minute Paul announced he was leaving the group, until the present time, this is the book for you. It's a diary, plain and simple, which lists day by day appearances, meetings, concerts, interviews, record releases, etc., many of which were obscure until now. If you're looking for narrative prose about the solo Beatles, look elsewhere. This book definitely has the most detailed account of John's final day, and the other Beatles' reactions. It has a few rare photos; a must have for true Beatlemaniacs.

If you have missed the experience of The Bee Sides of Tori Amos this is a fabulous book. It includes the rare and the known. "Here in my Head" "Honey" and "Ode to the Bananna King" are included in the large set list. Here in my Head is especially beautiful and true to Tori's playing.A definite must have for all Tori fans.

My favorite of all Tori's songbooks

This book was printed after Under The Pink was released, so her later b-sides are not represented here, but this songbook is still a gem. Also Paulina Stuckey's artwork is superb! Tori and her dad chose from among her drawings, and they fit so well with the songs they are paired with. Anyway that's all I'll say since other reviews deal with the music itself and I'd just be repeating..

lets see...where do i begin? since i am not a die hard fan of tori amos yet, although i love her very much as a person and a musician, some of the songs were not noticable yet to me. i will learn the song and when i do, i know i'll learn to love 'em. i just got the book today so it'll take while...you know? anyway, my favourites must be kinda "home on the range" (i like it because it's noticable) and i love "black swan". "here in my head" also is nice, but since i'm not the greatest at the piano, and it has 6 flats, i just play the music with the f's #. it's kinda hard at first, but after...man, it's a beautiful song. oh yeah, and if you decide to do it my way, make sure that when there's a natural sign, play the note sharp. you do the math...BOTTOM LINE: GREAT BOOK!

I saw them open for Sevendust and Creed in Fort Wayne on 4.1.2000 and before then, I hadn't heard of them. Now, I can't stop listening to the CD. They are AWESOME live, you can feel the energy and emotion pouring out of their performance. It's definatly worth it to get it. Their style is amazing, the vocals are awesome. The lyrics are beautiful. It's not a tragedgy band> They don't have to have any hype to make them wonderful. Their talent makes them one of the best bands out there today.

One word....WOW

3 Doors Down is one very talented band. With deep, strong lyrics, and a "mellow hardness" sound these guys totally rock!

Besides being a great musicians, these guys are just around to make music, not money, thereby lending themselves to truer lyrics and sound. I highly recommend this CD for anyone who likes rock, or good music in general.

I loved this book. It is a practical guide for two people who are interested in building a strong and satisfying partnership. I especially like the pacing. It is a 16-week process that introduces new concepts and exercises each week that build upon the previous week.
I also found this book to be very uplifting. You won't spend time allocating responsibility for the problems in your relationship, but will instead focus on building positive and useful ways of paying attention to one another.
As a recently divorced person, I wish this guide had been available to me earlier. But I find it very useful as a single person as well. I will go into my next relationship with knowledge of how to build and sustain a happy realationship.

Thinking I had it all figured out, I only picked up Big Picture Partnering at the insistence of a good friend. After devouring it in a weekend, I can't stop telling people (my husband first and foremost) what I've learned. Every marriage or relationship can use a little new energy, or some new skills so partners can take things to a new level--this is exactly what I found in Big Picture Partnering. The author offers real world specifics to help you enjoy the good times, see through the hard times, and always keep your big picture in mind.

For couples who want real, long-lasting love

This isn't a book about finding a mate or falling in love, or even about keeping a relationship alive. It's about something much bigger.

Big Picture Partnering starts with the assumption that you're already with the person you want to be with for the rest of your life. (So if you don't want, plan, or hope to be with your partner over the long haul, forget this book.)

But if you're serious about creating a lifelong partnership, and want it to be something special, this is the book to get.

This is not a book of quick fixes or easy answers. Instead, it is full of approaches and activities that can help any couple build trust, communication, understanding, commitment, and real, lasting love (the kind where both of you have your heads in the clouds AND your feet on the ground). After working through this book together with your partner, you won't need quick fixes or easy answers, because what you have won't need fixing. And you'll have each other, for real and for a lifetime.

In Big Picture Partnering:16 Weeks to a Rock-Solid Relationship, Dr. Hoistad shows couples how to move from a relationship that works to a relationship that rocks! Most loving couples want a relationship of partners, but the skills for nurturing and encouraging the healthiest and most exciting of relationships are not skills we're born knowing. Dr. Hoistad leads us through them, step by step, helping couples identify the diferences between being a true partner and being less than adult. However, she does all this without guilting or blaming either partner, which keeps both halves of the couple engaged in the entire process. She calls on us to become fully mature adults, an exciting journey but one too few of us know how to take -- for that help alone, this book is worth the read! Her guidance is practical and easy to follow, her exercises fun and rewarding. If you read through this book together and work through the exercises together, your relationship WILL change -- there is no way it cannot. Along the way, she delivers pragmatic assists to tackling the real life problems that can trouble even the most loving of couples and shows us how to make our relationships far more than good - they can be great!

What's great about this book is that it's not a solve-the-problems-in-your-relationship kind of book. It seems to be for couples who are doing just fine, they just want to kick it up a notch: reconnect, re-evaluate, and look at where they want to go together. This was an invaluable read for us (we both read it)- and we find ourselves really enjoying exploring places outside of our daily lives- the plans and goals we talked about when we first got together.

After reading this book and listening to the CD of the same name, readers/listeners will say "The Velvet who?" This is rock and roll at its strangest, most twisted and rebellious. Mr. Shaw's story borders on the fantastic, but it really happened! Five GIs shaving their heads and dressing in black and pumping out punk music a decade before the Sex Pistols, the Clash et al. Who woulda thunk it? This is truly an essential addition to any rock musicologists library.

A magnificent look at the beat scene in mid-60s Germany

Eddie Shaw's book, BLACK MONK TIME, is an in-depth look at the mutation of a standard 60s rock n roll group into the first punk band. As bassist for the Monks, he is able to give readers an inside look at the dynamics of a working rock n roll group. His prose really starts to catch fire, appropriately enough, when the band begins to undergo radical changes; both musically and satorially. Fans of the Velvet Underground to the Sex Pistols should give both the book and the Monks sole album (entitled BLACK MONK TIME also) a whirl.

Incredible. Everything you've ever wanted from a band that time forgot, but never get. Really well written, with the ring of truth and a great sense of humor. Some great cold war stuff too. Maybe this is what Johnny Rotten was refering to when he talked about going under the Berlin Wall. Such a strange, interesting story, that now I've read the book, listened to the CDs over and over, even saw one of the guys walking around NYC with a baseball cap on and still have a hard time believing all this really happened. But right there in the book is a photo of a tonsured Dave Day comparing notes with a spit-curled Bill Haley; and there's even a German poster advertising, in clockwise order, an album from The Who, Hums of The Loving Spoonful, Fresh Cream, and lo and behold, black monk time.

The greatest rock'n'roll book ever written,

Unromantic, exhausting, frightening, unrelenting, damn funny and the whole thing rings true...just like The Monks music. Wanna know what rock'n'roll in the 60s was really like? Read this. Eddie Shaw's writes this book as if he were telling you the story of his life with The Monks while sitting with you at a bar over the course of a beer soaked evening (which is how this story should be told!). His intimate and engaging style rivets you from one moment to the next and makes you feel as though he's telling you secrets he's never told anybody.

On top of everything else, the love story between Eddie and his wife is nothing short of inspiring and beautiful.

The Monks are the greatest American rock'n'roll that unfortunately never got to play in America. Thankfully, this book is here to keep the legacy alive.

It's Monk Time!
