This book has not only the child reading the story, but also lets the child decided how the story develops. The child reads each page & then either write's or draw's how he or she wants the story to develop. This book can be a treasure to the child even as the child grows because it it is a book the child helped write!

Roadside Thrills!
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-08
This book is a dense and stunning compilation of all things "roadside" (interesting buildings, restaurants, fiberglass giants, old amusement parks, eccentric constructions, etc.). The research is thorough and up-to-date, the photos fantastic, and the subject matter comprehensive. It's a must-have for anyone looking to add interesting sights to their travels and for folks interested in Americana.

There is so much going on in this book; it is busy and fun, and informative, and a hoot! It is real trip down Memory Lane. Cover is lively and enticing, print quality is nice, as is page size. It is clear the authors enjoy their work. Colors are crispy cool! I plan to buy several for Christmas gifts. If you took road trips when you were young, you're going to really enjoy being reminded of the quirky places along the way. If you never experienced road trips in the middle of last century, then read it anyway and find out what you missed, and what your parents and grandparents are talking about when they say they "took a trip". I'm the cute little girl in the convertible on page 69.

Like most of the other stuff from the master, if you have a yen for humor with brains, please, please buy this book. A columnist for the New Yorker, screenplay writer for the Marx Brothers, humorist par excellence - do you need more reasons? How about the fact that he makes most other humorists look like college boys indulging in frat-house antics...

Buy and enjoy! And then, buy the rest of his oeuvre!!

My favorite travel book ever

Hilarious account of the year legendary humorist S. J. Perelman took his family (wife and two mid-sized children) on a trip around the world. A follow-up to the equally delightful "Westward, Ha!", his similar trip with illustrator Al Hirschfeld. They travel the South Seas and Asia, the Middle East and all over Europe, accumulating ever larger piles of impedimentia.

Every sentence sparkles with Perelman's unique and exquisite brand of "airy persiflage" (reassuring a threatening official of a tyranical oil company: "No muckraker I, I nervously assured him, but a vapid little tomtit writing elegiacs about temple bells and lepidoptera"). Not only funny, but a very interesting look at a the state of the world still readjusting itself from WWII. Heartily recommended.

If you have ever rode in a car with kids, you will relate to this book!
Many questions (not answers)will keep you entertained. My kids enjoy looking for questions they have asked on a road trip. The 142 page book is divided into many chapters. I recommend it.

amazing african road trip

The book "An African Road Trip" by Stevan M Church is a fabulously funny accounting of a trip taken by two young men about 20 or more years ago. Todays date being 1/22/08. Their misadventures, lack of know how, bad luck and ability to run into the most unusual circumstances are hilariously amusing. I don't think it ever had an ISBN number or was formally 'published.' My family read a copy 'handed' from person to person and on and on and it was literally falling apart and bound together with rubber bands. We loved it, think of it often and only wish we'd thought to photocopy it!

Hooked me and my son on fishing in CT

Review Date: 2004-11-18
Two great things about this book, my son and I try something new every trip, and we spend lots of time together. Would love to meet this author because we feel like we know him from the way he writes. Knows what he's talking about! Taught us how there's a new fishing experience to be had everyday. We knew zero to start, but this book made it easy to get going. Now we catch fish all over, and I know what's up with my kid. Good book. If you're itchin' to take your kids fishin' you should check it out.
