Great food & memories!

Review Date: 2007-06-21
I live in IL, but growing up in Atlanta, whenever we had first-time visitors in town, there was one place we had to take them to experience--the Varsity! Whenever I go back to visit, I always try to make a point of stopping in for lunch at preferrably the big one downtown, if not one of the smaller suburban ones. While the lines can be long, they move you through efficiently, and the food's always fresh, and reasonably priced! My standard meal--double burger, large fries, large Coke, and fried peach pie!

It's been called various things over the years, like "a grease pit", but it's still a slice of home, an Atlanta institution! This book has rare photographs, interesting tidbits on how the Varsity "grew up" along with its hometown Atlanta, and heartwarming stories on what the Varsity means to everyday folks, celebrities, and the hard-working employees (among them carhop Nipsey Russell, the late comedian/game show panelist). Founder Frank Gordy sounded like a good man to work for--when asked what he did with the leftovers, he said "We don't have any"!

A great addition to the coffee table book collection for anyone from Atlanta or Georgia!

This cookbook has a variety of recipes that I haven't seen served at Moody's, however, they are wonderful. I especially like the Sweet and Sour Chicken and Enchiladas Supreme. It is a great buy and offers a variety of recipes which allow you to cook from scratch while living on a budget.

ATTN: VISITORS TO NEW ORLEANS

Oh! How I wish I had had this book a few years ago when we gave a party for more than 150 "mostly New Yorkers" at a grand hotel in the French Quarter.
It would have saved me a lot of talking and direction writing (which can be a real chore in this Crescent City). I would have gone out and purchased a copy for each couple and felt that "WHERE THE NATIVES FEAST" written by Jamie Menutis and Debby Hirsch Wood was a real bargain and a GREAT souvenir for all the guests!
Our guests really didn't want to eat where the tourists go; after all, they were young executives from the Big Apple who wanted the "insider track" on the "Big Easy".

This slim, easy to carry, book is filled with on-the-mark descriptions of each restaurant and its menus, to a point where some of MY super-secret places were too well described!! Thanks gals! The cover of the book is a delight; the setup (especially the printing of several maps for getting around New Orleans) is true genius in style and usage. And as lagniappe i.e. "gravy", the inclusion of some recipes allow the out-of-town reader to stock up on a few spice items before going back home.

I can't recommend this book more highly than 5 stars, 6 beans, 7 diamonds and 8 forks! It's a winner all the way!

This book has become my ultimate resource guide for where to dine in Boston. I love flipping through the beautifully designed pages. It's extremely informative and gives all the essential details as well as providing a real sense of the ambiance and other less tangible aspects of each restaurant -- makes finding a restaurant a real pleasure! The attention to detail makes a huge difference. I wish I had a guide like this for every city to which I travel. I have given it as a gift to a lot of my friends and they all love it too. It comes out every six months and each edition seems to be more comprehensive than the last.

Great book for young experimenters
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 1999-10-07
The book is great for young experimenters. Easy to follow instructions and clever writing get kids into the 'science is fun' mindset. The 'Food for thought' section that accompanies each activity explains the science behind the activity clearly and with the right amount of detail for the intended audience. (Tested on my 10-year-old son). Each activity concludes with a 'More to chew on' section that enables kids to relate what they've observed to other examples of the same principle. Many of the activities focusing on static electricity, air pressure and buoyancy could be used for elementary school science fair projects. There is an awesome demonstration of center of gravity. Other activities deal with sense of touch, taste and smell. There are a couple of activities exploring optics. The scientific method and related concepts are introduced. The illustrations are extremely helpful in diagramming the text. Older kids (and adults) will enjoy the reading for the subtle titles like 'Stop Making Cents' and 'A Salt and Gravity'.

Shouting Loud About Whispering Pines
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-12-01
Have you ever wanted to put a face on those whacking Flannery O'Connor characters or be able to paint what Faulkner wrote? If so, then this is your book.

I worked for photographer Birney Imes for one year in Columbus, Mississippi. I was a reporter for his family newspaper. I got a chance to live in the area where Whispering Pines is located and get a feel for Imes's hometown, which is the basis for nearly all of his photographs.

I've driven by the old Whispering Pines building many times, but you wouldn't look twice at the broken down place. What makes Imes a great photographer is that he stops, gets out, and meets the people behind the place. Since he's a hometown boy, the people in the area warm to him and don't mind the intrusion of his camera.

Imes's photos of the haunting owner of Whispering Pines and his surroundings are vintage South -- what you never see from the road. He uses bright lighting in full-bled color to depict a place that now is crubbling in grey dust.

This book comes in a close second to Imes's Juke Joint, a collection of photographs of various southern juke joints in Mississippi. But if you want a mystical vision -- a southern mirage, try Whispering Pines.
