A great resource...well researched and user-friendly. Runs the gamut from upscale to coffee shop. Each restaurant review contains thumb-nail sketches of the menu, location, hours of operation, and the author's impression of the restaurant itself.

Whimsical Book Based on the Movie
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-09
"Remy and Emile are nothing alike! Remy likes only gourmet food, while Emile thinks everything is food! Remy dreams of becoming a chef, while Emile just dreams of eating! These two are an odd pair, but they're brothers, and they'll stick by each other no matter what! Oh, brother!" -- From the back cover

My family and I saw the Ratatouille in the theater and LOVED it! In fact, when it comes out on DVD later this month, we'll be sure to snatch it up.

We have several books based on this movie, and the newest of our acquisitions is Oh, Brother! Rather than featuring slick stills from the movie, this unusual softcover book recreates key scenes using what looks like fabric and other materials--giving it a neat 3-D effect.

At 24-pages, the sentences are short with the illustrations taking up most of the page. This means that Oh, Brother! is a perfect book for beginner readers (and as a short bedtime story!) Linguini and Colette make an appearance in this book, as does the crazy old lady who owns the house Remy and Emile raided (remember the lightning strike?).

If you're looking for an appropriate book for youngsters based on the Ratatouille movie, Oh, Brother will be sure to please both kids and adults!

Ohio Tea Trails was fabulous

I was thrilled to come upon this book. It is nearly impossible to find a comprehensive guide or directory about tea rooms. I knew of my local ones, but not statewide here in Ohio. Rebecca includes photos of the tea rooms she has discovered along with descriptions of the proprietors, the shops hours, types of foods, reservations required, handicapped accessible and locations. Very thorough and a nice handbook to have on hand for your next trip in Ohio!

The best of the New York dining guides
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-08-08
If you love New York, love the theater and love exploring new restaurants, this guidebook is for you.

Organized by neighborhood, the guide provides listings of restaurants in all price ranges. The author uses a chatty writing style in describing each restaurant. She has a talent for making a place come alive with just a few sentences. Each listing contains examples of items on the menu with prices.

In the introduction, Ms. Watson states the listings are recommendations not reviews. I have come to rely on those recommendations and have never been disapointed.

By far the best of the New York dining guides.

The essentials of human-centered management
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-06
I'll admit that I'm cheating a bit in writing this review, because the author is my grandfather, and I have grown up listening to--and seeing in action--the principles that he covers in this book. When I decided to start my own business at the age of 27, I wanted him close by to advise me.

Since my business was in Tokyo, I coudn't have the real thing, but his book brings together the concepts and the spirit of his life's pursuit in a way that made these accessible to me, a complete management novice.

I've used his book for the past two years to carefully build my business around the idea that the people who constitute a company are the true source of the vital energy that propels that business to succeed.

I would imagine that managers at all levels would immediately see the benefit of the ideas presented here. Human-centered organizations create real, long-term profit, both emotionally and financially. I have seen it in action! This book can help to point your management in the right direction.

Organizational Behavior for the Hospitality Industry

Organizational Behavior in the Hospitality Industry is a much needed text for undergraduate and graduate organizational behavior studies with a much needed focus on the hospitality/services industries. Drs. Berger and Brownell have approached this often studied and reviewed topic from a perspective that those of us who teach in hospitality management and tourism programs have been wanting for many years.
In a business where customers (internal and external) are king, Organizational Behavior in the Hospitality Industry is an excellent tool for instruction and discussion. I commend the authors for their fine work.

The Mildred Pierce Restaurant in Toronto must be the place to have Sunday brunch, judging by the great recipes in the cookbook. Fans of the book and movie Mildred Pierce will be delighted by the quotations and references to favorite scenes and characters. Fans of breakfast and good food in general will enjoy the recipes. Let's sit down with some Porch Swing Lemonade and do brunch!

A Real Treasure!

This is one of those books I can't recommend highly enough if you love old Hollywood or the flamboyant architecture and graphic design of Hollywood in the 20's - 50's. I picked it up on a cut-out table in New York about 10 years ago and have come to appreciate it as one of the best books in my library - in fact it's one of those books that is always getting borrowed from friends who are graphic designers or work at ad agencies looking for inspiration.

Jim Heimann deserves much praise for assembling what is obviously a huge labor of love with lots of great photos and illustrations that you will never see anywhere else - everything from cocktail napkins and matchbooks to beautiful interior photography and paparazzi pics of the stars at play.

Also I'd like to disagree with the review - I actually found the writing in the book to be pretty engaging. It's fairly straightforward and to the point., luckily since there is a lot of history to cover.

Anyway it's an amazing book that I would highly recommend.

I write this review of the Overheard series in January 2000, around 12 years after I stopped doing them and moved to Berlin, where I now live and work...and I'm pleased when I look at them again! They are still fresh and honest...I'd recommend them for advanced students of American culture! (Be sure to order an extra copy!) SC

I used to travel extensively to South Carolina for business. Bar-B-Que is one of my passions and this is an invaluable aid to finding the best offered. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in finding and/or eating Bar-B-Que in South Carolina. The book is organized by name of restaurant, city, and region. It includes address, phone, hours, and comments.
