Everything you need to know to feast and forage in Costa Rica
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-11
This is a "must have" book for those going to Costa Rica. It takes you on a journey of the restaurants and markets throughout the country so that you can easily make the decision on where you want to go to both eat and shop. It demystifies the ingredients used in the dishes you eat and provides extensive fact filled sections on the types of wonderful exotic fruits and vegetables you will find in the markets. It is a fun book to use and absolutely necessary to make your way across all parts of this beautiful and exotic country. It contains glossaries on many types of foods and ingredients so that you know what you are eating, lists of useful spanish words and phrases, and and up-to-date country restaurant guide with phone numbers and locations so that you don't have to guess on where you want to go eat and much more useful information, all in one book. I recommend this to anyone who is going to Costa Rica.

A Break from The Motorways
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-08-24
This is a revised version of the book, just published and I have managed to get a copy. An excellent travellers book, if you like to avoid the expensive mediocrity of motorway service stations. As the (now sub-title) implies, all the places listed can be reached within 5 minutes of leaving the motorway. Anyone thinking of visiting the UK would do well to buy a copy of this revised book. The author's sketches add greatly to the guide. Well worth the money.

underrated classic
Helpful Votes: 11 out of 12 total.
Review Date: 2002-03-13
I first heard about this book from the introduction to "Kitchen Confidential," where the author Anthony Bourdain compared it to Orwell's "Down and Out in Paris and London." He was right. It's hard to find but worth the wait. This story of "The Falls," a hip New York City hangout in the early 1990's, is a wonderful portrait of the backstage world of restaurants -- the fish-crazy chef, the owner who doubles as a NYC fireman, the celebrity backers like Matt Dillon, the supermodels who got free steaks, it's all there and very, very funny. Anyone who loves restaurants or good writing will love this perfectly-titled book.

Cocktails 2005 - ( a collection of drinks and mixes)
Helpful Votes: 7 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-24
This book is perfect if your purpose is to serve guests the most
up-to-date drinks. The authors explain how to "dress up a drink".
For instance, there are techniques to chill a glass, rim the
glass with condiments or flame twist a drink with fire. The volume is well researched and topical for today's times.

Classic drinks are the Vanilla Pear Mimosa, Serendipity Champagne, Napier (with fennel syrup) and Champagne Mojito with mint leaves.

The acquisition would be very helpful if you have been away from
formal social scenes for a time and there is a need to update the
repertoire of drinks which you can present to guests without too
much preparation. This book would be a bartender's delight.
It is clear, concise, cheap and colorful with each drink depicted
in the preferred mode. Buy this book and you will impress the
guests with a thoroughly up-to-date preparation of fine wine and
liquor.

Best book on dining in San Francisco
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-14
This book is a fantastic help for dining in all kinds of restaurants in San Francisco - and shopping for cookware, all over the city! We visited many of the restaurants, cafes, delis and shops and found them very well reviewed. I would highly recommend this book to all visitors to San Francisco. The only other recommendation is to call first - some have closed since the book was published!

Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-01-01
What a wonderful resource this is! I ordered a copy on a whim, and found the author's writing style both informative and entertaining. There were so many shops and events that I've never visited, and I'm a Colorado native! I now have the book in my glove compartment, so my friends and I can visit a "pre-screened" fabulous restaurant, no matter what part of town we are visiting. I recommend this book to anyone who lives in Colorado, is relocating to Colorado, or visiting Colorado. I eagerly await her next book!

A real treasure
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

This book is chock full of great information for any foodie living in Connecticut. Not only are there great tips on restaurants, but also tips on artisan food producers, farms, farmers markets, gourmet shops, recipes, etc, etc. I have been a fan of Patricia Brooks restaurant reviews but this volume exceeded my expectations. It's also written in a chatty personal style that's fun to read. A real treasure!
