A friend introduced me to Resident Evil 4, and after several gruesome deaths during the course of the game I thought that maybe I should by the walk-through book. I first purchased one from a differant company, but found it to be unsatisfactory, and looked for and located a copy of this Bradygames version, which I have been extremely pleased with. The information and maps provided for game play are excellent, to the point where you can be totally prepared for what's around the next corner if you decide to read ahead, or you can just forge ahead, and then go back and read in the book where you messed up after you die, and do it better the next time. Some people might think it spoils the game to be prepared before hand, but it can easily make the game more enjoyable, and this walk-through definately makes it more so, if you decide to play that way. It's an excellent resource, and a definate must for any serious player.

The Guide for RE4 is a beautifully rendered one, covering all the places things hide, all the ways to combine items, and how to get every detail out with regard to outfits and the oddity of "other" weapons. The first time you play it you could probably use this, too, but only if you want to make one run at the game and only if you need it to fast-forward all of the puzzles. The problem with this is that a guide is simply a guide and, in the end, RE4 is player-friendly enough that you won't need it. You might need to find out about what to beat to get something bizarre, but there are things in game that allow for everything else.

First, the merchants in the game are really useful and they sell maps that highlight out all the treasure. While this doesn't tell you how to combine everything, you can simply keep all your odd little items and try combining them until you manage a priceless artifact. Second, you can look at the guns and see how they "stat up" to figure out what you want. The guide give advice that works if you want to edge up from one weapon to the other, but some of the weapons are pretty playthings and their use is what makes the experience unique. Third, this is the friendliest game as far as enemies are concerned, and you should be able to beat anything with a little practice and a few lucky shots. The same can be said for the puzzles - none of them are really difficult and finding out stuff on your own makes you feel strong. Finally, just play through the minigames in the game, kick it up and beat the game more than once, and power up your weapons all the way and see what you end up with.

So, you really don't need a guide and maybe you know it. Still, if you have to have one because you just need it or if you are buying this for someone who you might think needs help, it thrives here. This book is sexy, too, and I was impressed by the quality of the maps and the excellent care taken by the designers of the walk-through. I am of the opinion that a walk-through is either (1) a compulsive need to get everything or (2) a way to even the playing field. If you need either one of those, this is a golden ticket out of Las Plaga land. If not, you know how to run and gun.
Regardless, try to run the game first! The play-through is exciting when you have no idea what to expect AND you are better than you think. I wish i could wink when saying this, too, and add "trust me" for good measure. Resident Evil 4

this book is a MUST BUY

You can't do anything wrong in Resident Evil 4 as long as you have this guide. The maps show everything down to the ground texture, and the screenshots look like they are still on the TV. The guide covers playing strategies, characters, weapons, enemies, and just about anything else that has to do with the game. Resident Evil 4 is an extremely complex game at times, and this guide makes it a breeze. The only problem that I had was that the first few pages fell out, but the guide is better then any online walkthrough. BUY THIS BOOK!!!

The Best Resident Evil 2 Guide
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-18
The Resident Evil 2 Versus Books guide was one of the guides (along with the Final Fantasy VII guide and Metal Gear Solid Guide) that helped to make Versus Books a name among strategy guides. The Resident Evil 2 is perhaps one of the best strategy guides ever written. All the secrets revealed, and a user-friendly walkthrough full of humor and detailed content. There is no Resident Evil 2 guide better than the Versus Books one. Even critics hailed that it was better than Gamefan's Official one. And unlike the Final Fantasy VII Versus Guide, the Resident Evil 2 guide actually comes at a fair price.

The guide begins with a section they call basic training. Here they go into several tips for gamers. Usually, in most guides it's a rehash of the instruction booklet. Here, Versus provides tips you actually won't find in the instruction booklet. After that, we go into the weapon details. Each weapon is given a star rating, letting you know of it's effectiveness. With stars ranging from one to five. Five meaning it'll be a weapon you want.

There's also an enemies list that tells you how many shots it'll take to down an enemy with each and every weapon.

The walkthrough of this game is perhaps the best of any survival horror guide. Period. Leon and Claire each have their own scenario walkthrough. Their A Scenario walkthroughs are each 32 pages long. Each walkthrough is decorated with very vivid and detailed hand drawn maps that point out all the items in an area. No other RE2 guide has maps this detailed. They also give you strategy that's detailed by room.

An even better part about the walkthrough is actually how the guide uses its maps. For each section of the game you are at, the maps are in different shades. If it's totally black it means you don't have the means to get there. If it's visible, but pale, it means you can go there, but the walkthrough won't lead you through there just yet. If an area is really bright, it means the walkthrough is concerned with that area. It's extremely helpful and makes for clear organization.

The Scenario B walkthrough is exactly the same, only it tells you a little about Tyrant, and gives you a universal strategy. So as not to spoil the fun of your encounters with him, Versus Books doesn't tell you when he's coming. Surprisingly, this helps the guide rather than harm it. Since the universal strategy works each time, there's no need for them to keep dumping it in, and it's pretty easy to memorize.

There are also a couple of other things that make the guide stick out. As I said, it's a room by room strategy, but it also points out easy cheap tricks to down bosses, and keep you alive. The guide is easy to use, and full of detailed crisp clear screen shots.

All the secrets you need are also in tact. They debunk the rating system and also provide a strategy for Hunk and Tofu. If there was a problem with this guide, I'd say it's that this is for the original Resident Evil 2. As such, this guide doesn't detail the secrets of the later Dual Shock version. Just keep that in mind. So you won't get the details on infinite ammo for your weapons, or Extreme Battle Mode. This is for the original RE2.

Despite that little flaw, this is without a doubt the best Resident Evil 2 guide out there.

The Good
+Detailed maps
+Detailed walkthrough
+Crystal clear screenshots
+Walkthroughs for all four scenarios
+Hunk and Tofu
+Ranking system explained
+All the secrets of the original RE2
+Enemy chart
+Weapon suggestions
+No Spoilers!
+Fantastic Boss Strategies

The Bad
-The guide is for the original RE2, therefore the secrets of the dual shock version are not debunked
-No final boss strategy for the B Scenario

I'm assuming this is the Resident Evil 3 Official Perfect Guide by VERSUS BOOKS (The author is Casey Loe so I assume it's a VERSUS guide). Right off the bat I can tell you this is one of the best looking strategy guides I've ever seen. From the same staff that worked on the Resident Evil 2 Perfect Guide comes a more in-depth guide.

The book isn't very thick but it's helpful. Detailed maps that were drawn by hand to help you navigate through the zombie infested Racoon city. These maps point ou the location of all items (Even the ones that switch on you).

Just before the walkthough the "basic training" section. This section details all items which are giving a rating based on a five star scale and it details all enemies and how much ammo from each indivual weapon it'll take to kill the enemy.

The walkthrough is the most organized of any RE guide to date. Each section is highlighted superbly. The basic walkthrough is laid out in step by step form. If it's part of what you need to do and where to go (the basic instructions of what to do) then it's on a yellow background. If it's a puzzle it's on a red background, if it's a branching point in the game it's on a black background and if its a Nemesis encounter its on a blue background.

Branching points in the game (quick decision) are detailed PERFECTLY in this guide. They show a bubble that'll take you to the page you need to be on concerning your decision.

The Mercenary Mini-Game is written in the exact same layout as the Hunk and Tofu guide in their RE2 Perfect Guide. It's step by step and it tells you what to expect in each room. The guide also has a map for this mini game and shows just what route every character is to be taking. It'll get you through conserving you the most of your ammo and it even talks about the infinite money trick.

Lastly are the secrets. The secrets section tells you everything you need to know. From the point of the rankings to what you need to do to get all the bonus weapons in the game.

You won't go wrong in choosing this guide for RE3. There are also crystal clear screenshots that help you every step of the way. The guide also has a brilliant sense of humor!

The Good
+Detailed maps
+Detailed walkthrough
+Organized Content
+Basic Training!
+Tells you how to defeat each and every enemy
+All Secrets revealed!
+Mercenary Mini-Game totally covered
+A guide through all the quick decisions
+Humorous Content

The Bad

....well....ummm.....uhh....hmmm...just what WAS bad about this guide? Hmm...well...uhh....hold on I'll think of something....ummm....alright there's nothing wrong with this guide. It's absolutely perfect in everyway possible. No guide is finer than the VERSUS BOOKS Resident Evil 3 Official Perfect Guide.

This was weak. Should have learned my lesson from when I was younger reading "Ninja Gaiden" and "Karate Kid". Movies and games based on books are good. Books based on movies or games are terrible! It was just boring. It tried too much to incorporate aspects of the game (find "keys", using "health plants"). That stuff doesn't really translate well into book form. The story moved along okay but it was nothing special.

Not bad. Entertaining. Possibly helpful.

I don't know why I put myself through reading so many video game based novels. There are indeed a few diamonds in the rough out there, and conversely there are a lot of real trash-heaps. This novel isn't either one. It's a pretty middle of the road book, and I have some good and some bad things to say.

The good: it's not painfully written, for the most part, and S.D. Perry seems to know what she's doing most of the time. It sticks very closely to the plotline of the original Playstation game ( NOT the Gamecube version, which in fact has a more complex and interesting story). It sticks so close, in fact, that you can practically use the book as a strategy guide. A very rough guide, but a guide nonetheless.

The bad: well, it's not a very original novel obviously, but I can't fault the author on that one. She has kind of a limited canvas to work with. However, I can fault her for the italicized internal dialogue. I guess she couldn't make her mind up whether it was a first or third person story. And my final problem is that it's not particularly mind-blowing if you're over the age of 13. I would have been glued to the book if I'd read it when I was 10, but as it stands now I've read many things which thrilled and chilled me more.

Overall, not bad for a video game novelization, but if you're looking for a revelation you won't find it here.

I never knew they had novels based on Resident Evil. At first, I thought the novels would be a joke. How wrong was I. Perry did a wonderful job capturing the Resident Evil universe and I found myself incapable of putting the book down.

The book itself is based on the hit game Resident Evil that came out for Playstation and latter remade on the Gamecube. Overall, the book follows closely with the game, but deviates somewhat in terms of character background and some other information.

I find the book boring at some parts, while exciting in others. The book describe puzzles and other key moments in the game. The author tries a little too hard to describe some of the puzzles in my opinion. Overall though, the book is an excellent complement to the game. I think any fan who can overlook minor inconsistencies will love the book. It is very detailed on some part, and it describes the characters very well.

I recommend picking up all of Perry's Resident Evil books. They are wonderful. Right now I'm on book three, which is based on Resident Evil 2. However, my understanding is that books two and four are original stories. Also, Resident Evil 0 is included. I recommend picking up the entire series, but a great place to start is with this book, The Umbrella Conspiracy. You'll love it if you love the game.

Excellent book. I always had trouble focusing while reading. I would read a page and then go back and read it again because I forgot what I read. Not after I read this book. I love horror stories and the book reads great. I have read all the books in the series, plus some Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance books after this. I also read Idoru, Gates of Fire, and the Human Comedy, and classics like Slaughterhouse Five, For Whom the Bell Tolls, and the Good Earth.

Excellent Game Adaptation!

I really liked S.D. Perry's Aliens novels, so when I saw Resident Evil was being worked on as well... I figured it was a good bet to pick these up as well. This is one of the better video game adaptations to novel I've encountered. I will always like Jill Valentine's character and having her be a farily focal part of the novel made this very enjoyable.

Perry expertly captured the atmosphere of the Resident Evil realm and really draws the readers in. I read this book fairly quickly because I simply couldn't put it down, nor did I want to. I think the Resident Evil franchise made a good decision in having their game novelized, and it was interesting to see it follow the game story line specifically. A few other video game to novels don't really do that, Halo and Diablo come to mind. At this point it is safe to say I am looking forward to reading the second installment of this series.

I realy don't have too much more to say on this book other than it's highly enjoyable and if you enjoy the Resident Evil universe, or sci-fi/horror this is definitely a must read. If you've read Perry's other books, this one is no exception, it's just as good and entertaining as the others.

Like The Umbrella Conspiracy, Perry did a fantastic job with City of the Dead. City of the Dead is based on the video game Resident Evil 2.

Of the books Perry written on Resident Evil, City of the Dead is probably the most detailed and longest. I literally could not stop reading City of the Dead. Page after page, the suspense and action was non-stop. One of Perry's big plus with this book is character development. You really felt and understood all of the characters - Leon, Claire, Ada, Sherry, Irons, the Birkins, and everyone else. Perry did a wonderful job in presenting all of the characters without confusing the readers. Many times in the book, the plot switches between Leon and Ada to Claire and Sherry. Normally, that would be messy and confusing, but Perry really did a thorough job in keeping the flow while telling two different aspects of the story.

Another positive point about this book is Perry didn't get into unneeded details. In The Umbrella Conspiracy, I felt Perry trailed off a lot with details of puzzles. In City of the Dead, Perry stepped away from that approach, and instead concentrated on key details of the plot, characters, and environment.

I highly recommend this book to any Resident Evil fan.

I've never really played any of the games, but i just got this book a few months ago and was really impressed. This is the fourth novel I've read, the previous three being the first three Halo books. Perry does a great job with showing the imagery of a city overrun and the rush to sive lives. Perry also shows the dilemmas in the minds of the main characters.

I recommend this novel for fans of the Halo books or fans of video game novels.

A nice niche to the series

In Underworld, author SD Perry takes an interesting approach. Instead of having a story based on survival horror, she instead went into the direction of an action-adventure with horror elements. The familiar zombies that plague the Resident Evil universe are replaced with hordes of experimental animal-monsters. I consider Underworld like Resident Evil 4: a fresh new idea that appeals to both new and old fans of the series. Ironically, Leon is there to take charge into the new direction as one of the leading characters.

The story of Underworld is typical of the Resident Evil universe. The story focuses on characters from past Resident Evil stories. John, David, Rebecca, Claire, and Leon must infiltrate a secret underground Umbrella laboratory to retrieve a notebook full of secret codes at the request of the mysterious Trent - a secret character who seem to aid characters in past Resident Evil novels. The book is rather entertaining and fulfilling in the action and adventure sense. The book ends spectacularly with a lot of details about White Umbrella and more importantly, it reveals a lot of information and motives behind Trent.

Personally, I liked Underworld. Author SD Perry did a wonderful job in creating a believable world - even though Resident Evil is anything but. Underworld focuses more on the key players of Umbrella and tries to dig deeper into the hows and whys of Umbrella and its schemes. I believe any fan of Resident Evil will like this book. It is a wonderful spin off and it's nice to see an author who tries to legitimately create a niche in the Resident Evil world.

For the last two weeks I've been reading this series of books, and so far I have completed 1-4. This book is my favorite so far. I really thought the story was interesting and it kind of let your imagination run wild. There was also some humor added at certain points that really made the book a good read. Out of all of the books, this one seemed the most intriguing to me. She somehow instilled a story about the STARS running through an Umbrella "Jurassic Park" of sorts with a true RE feel and some really funny comedy. Perry does miss a few notes here and there when it comes to her choice of words and writing in general, but to me her writing is very tolerable.

A good story!!

I liked this story better than Caliban Cove. I wanted to give it a try since I had read some bad reviews about it. Honestly I think it's a good book. Now it doesn't have zombies in it but it does have freakish monsters in there. I think the best part is at the Epilogue when you find out more about Trent. Now things are coming together, making sense. So if you like S.D. Perry books I think you'll like this one. I would save this for the last though cause The Umbrella Conspiracy, The city of the dead, Nemesis, & Code Veronica are better this is just a another adventure not part of the storyline.

This book had a fast begining to start off with. And although it is vague at times, it still good. After all, vaguness leaves room for the real imagination thinkers to work. When I first started reading this, I believed the premise and thought that this could've been a great movie. It has all the making's of it. (I think that was the writer's intention.) And you love this one gimick involving a experiment in survival of the fittest. Enjoy.

I really liked this book better than Caliban Cove or Zero Hour. This book introduces you to two new charaters Carlos Oliveira and Nicolai Ginovaef. The book starts with Carlos getting a call from his squad leader about going on a umbrella operation. Umbrella labeled it a chemical spill.Yeah right!!While Carlos is walking towards the Umbrella office to get briefed on the operation he meets the mysterious Mr. Trent who gives him some important information. Also Jill Valentine an X-S.T.A.R.S member is trying to get out of Raccoon. This book had some similarities to the Resident Evil Apocalypse movie which I also liked. The best part I think was the tidbit of information about Mr. Trent at the end. You find out what his motivation is for destroying Umbrella. All in all I rank it with The Umbrella Conspiracy and City of the dead two other S.D. Perry masterpieces. Well I have one more book to read Code: Veronica and I will be done with the series. I am feeling kinda of sad because these books were so good and I don't know what will take it's place.

Once again, Racoon City is awash with zombies, mutants, bioengineered badies and surgically enhanced nasties. 'Nemesis', though the fifth book in the series, is never short for new and unexpected horrors as a courtesy of S. D. Perry's skilled imagination and writing style. It seems with Umbrella at the helm and Ms. Perry there to guide their unscrupulous activities in new and horrific directions there is a never ending way for mutagenic virus to wreak havoc. As expected, blood does flow and, as usual, the body count rises rapidily in a repetative but otherwise well paced and evenly told tale.
