I loved the book it was very good with the location and territory. The story will get you in its grip and you won't want to put the book down. I think the book was very well written and can't wait for the next book to come out so I can find out what else Reb gets into. If the author gets into the detail about the rest of the stories he will get lots of attention.

We have been bringing this book home from the library for over a year now. It is my son's all time favorite. Be prepared to stumble through it the first time you read it and find yourself trying to explain some new vocabulary words. This book is great. The little boy goes to the store to purchase some red sneakers, dispite the many colors that are in the store the red sneakers are sold out. The little boy explains to the store clerk all the wonderful things a pair of red sneakers can do. From mega- speed packs, little fans to cool your toes, sunctions cups, and parachutes. Great imagination, nice illustrations, The little boy leaves with a pair of blue rocket sandals. This is a little more difficult book to read to a group of preschoolers, but a great book one on one, or a great book to read to a group of 5 to 8 year olds.

My 7 year old loves the text of this rollicking, riotous adventure through Mile's quest for those amazing red sneakers. My 4 year old loves exploring the drawings which are bold and colorful. Caution, don't take it out at bedtime, or any other time you're looking for a quick fix!

Storyteller circles will enjoy this one! This book was a lot of fun for our storytelling circle at the local library. Lisa Lawston has children of her own, I can tell. The verse swings you right along with Miles in it's song-like rhythm, and the pictures are great for my young audience's viewing. The surprise ending always brings a round of giggles. This book goes with me for every show. Top of the stack.

"From the first page to the last page, this book is one amazing adventure."
Roger Cantu - Author of "Powerful Mental Development."

Book Description:

Bravery, heroism, and audacity, convert the narration of this novel into an honest and wonderful treat for action & adventure lovers. These are the qualities of the daredevil pilots of World War I, that gather to form a flying circus, and eventually join forces as allies of Pancho Villa. After adhering to his cause, they convert five obsolete planes into warplanes capable of amazing maneuvers.

Ultimately, death takes five of these brave pilots, and leaves two of them alive. Frank and Antonio who become involved in a love triangle with a beautiful young woman named Florentina. The romantic struggle takes the characters into a powerful journey of discovery. While at the same time, new light is shined on the legendary life of Pancho Villa.

When I say this book flies it's because it took me from page one to the very last in one sitting. I just could not put it down. Aventure and action keep you going, and the romantic triangle between the Mexican and the American pilot for the love of the girl resolves until the very last page in a dramatic duel and an unexpected ending. Pancho Villa appears briefly, but so well depicted that you get to really know him intimately. A swell book I heartily recommend.

I'm glad I bought it.

It is more action adventure romance than I hoped for. This book dragged me from the first to the last page without letting go of me. A truly really great page turner contrived within the historical frame of the Mexican revolution, which lends realism and credence to the plot.
Although Francisco Villa is a lesser participant, the way he is depicted provides an authentic insight of this wondrous character. I congratulate myself on choosing this book that, besides entertaining me fully, taught me a lot about Mexico and its people.

In "The Paradox of Tarheel Politics", veteran reporter Rob Christensen, of the Raleigh News and Observer, provides a stellar addition to the pantheon of North Carolina political works.

This book is a must read for any politician, journalist, activist, observer or just plain interested party. Christensen deserves a medal for making the subject matter approachable to the layman. As an historical work, the book ranks among the most active and engaging stories in recent memory.

Perhaps a testament to the editors Christensen has had in his career, the prose is engaging and full of energy. There is hardly a weak spot in the entire book. Whether the reader is on vacation with hours on end or a casual nighttime bookworm reading a few pages a night, "The Paradox of Tarheel Politics" is sure to capture and hold their attention.

Hidden Surprises

Review Date: 2007-03-13
Public staircases are one of those features of the urban landscape that can easily be taken for granted, or overlooked. Often situated between houses, many of them appear to the casual observer to lead into a private yard, their true nature not readily apparent. The author has done a thorough job in locating these elusive pathways. I found myself wishing for a map showing the location of the stairs mentioned. The author gives detailed directions and Thomas Brothers references, however, even a simple map would assist in visualizing where the stairs are in relation to each other and planning excursions in the same area.

Despite the author's obvious effort to include everything, for some reason, the stairs between Burnside and the Skidmore Fountain were missing. As the fastest passage between the 20 bus line and the MAX, and clearly visible from the Saturday Market, I would have expected any Portland resident to be aware of them. More forgivable is the absence of several stairways off NW Skyline, leading to neighborhoods in the West Hills. None of these faults, however, detracts from the book's value.

Unfortunately, it is out of print, and therefore either unavailable or outrageously expensive. The Multnomah County Library has a few copies available for viewing (not checkout) at the Downtown branch; the waiting list for the sole circulating copy was up to 19 the last time I checked. At three weeks per person, that could mean waiting over a year for it. However, there was no waiting list for the one copy in the Clackamas County system, at the Lake Oswego branch.

You'll read every page, over and over

I have not received the book yet. I would like to think I came across this book by the hand of God. My father passed away this past May. He was a Red Sox fan his whole life, even though he had never seen them win a World Series. I have bought this book for my sons who are Yankee fans. I am going to write them a letter signing it Love Grandpa. So many of my father's friends and families could not believe that a man waits his whole life for his team to win and dies on the year it happens. My youngest son said that pop was in heaven asking God to take the curse off Boston and God seemed to have listened to him. Hoping pop did not ask God to put the curse on his Yankees. In memory of my dad, I hope this book will be a 5 star book to my sons.

Not only the best book I've ever read about the Red Sox and what they mean to their fans, but the best book I've read about baseball and the significant place it has in our lives, whether we are aware of it or not. His referral to The Boss as 'King Steinbrenner the Odious' is as fitting a moniker of that man as I've ever heard. Simpy a shame so many of Higgins' books are out of print.

I was so curious about qabalah but afraid I could never even begin to understand it. This book is great--takes you from knowing nothing about Qabalah (like me) and works toward a very in-depth overview of the whole subject. I can't stress enough how understandable it was. It's slow reading, but so worth it! Highly recommended.

A First Class Biography
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-04-26
I bought this book in the hopes that I would learn more about a significant, but rather unknown WW1 pilot, and I was not disappointed. Whiteside has left no stone unturned during his research, accessing military records, personal memoirs, and previously published material. I think it was nice that the author left a lot of the minute details for the endnotes, as this helped the story of the 'Black Knight' to flow more freely. It is amazing to read about some of the private matters concerning this ace, and from this we get a good idea about his character and self-determination. As the last reviewer stated, he may have been a Nazi member, but this association did little to harm his reputation as he is known today. In fact, Schleich's dealings with the Nazi party only enhances the intrigue of this book. One thing the reader gets from reading this book is that von Schleich was highly motivated, and he very much enjoyed a good challenge.

There is a rather large appendix, which concisely spells out his military assignments, aerial victories, awards, ect. I especially liked the photo section (over 40 pages!). I found the images to be very interesting, adding even more detail to this already comprehensive account. Probably the best part about the book was the way it was organized; the chapters are broken-down into easily digestible parts - complete with sub-headings to tell the reader what the section is about.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in WW1 aviation, or even to those who enjoy reading about people whose lives were full of intrigue and danger.

The Black Knight Lives!

Review Date: 2007-04-07
"Rampant Lion" is a fitting testament to an honorable man whose life, though little-known even to WW1 aviation enthusiasts, was filled with aerial victories, defeats, triumphs and tragedies. Known as the Black Knight, the career and personal life of Eduard Ritter von Schleich are vividly brought to life by Darren Whiteside in this entertaining book. A coveted "Blue Max" recipient, von Schleich epitomized the classic Flying Ace of the early days of combat aviation. A victor in 35 air battles and a Jasta leader, he was also a Lufthansa pioneer and key figure in the rise of the Luftwaffe -- his association with the Nazi Party may be distateful to some readers, but as Whiteside's narrative explains, the Black Knight's love of his country made him an obvious recruit for what he perceived as a chance to bring Germany out of the ashes and humiliation of the First World War. Great photos, most of which will be unfamiliar even to die-hard fans of WW1 aviation, add to the appeal of this excellent book.

The Rampant Lion, the life story and the adventures of Eduard Ritter von Schleich is an in depth look into one of Germany's top flying ace's of WWI and WW2. It is a well written biography and an easy read. This book tells the story of his humble beginnings as a child in a small town in Bavaria, and his love and dedication to country. He joined military as a young man. He developed a keen interest in flying, and soon his talents were recognized by his superiors. During the first world war, his talent's as a leader and a top gun fighter pilot were soon recognized. His trouble's and his determintation soon gained him the title of "The Black Knight". This book is a must read for all people who admire men of honor and determination.

A pleasure and a call to depth

Winner of The David Family Foundation's "Defender of the Earth" Award, Thorpe has produced a fine book of essays. It is simply a pleasure to be a fellow wanderer here, tracing the author's thoughts through this delightful but challenging book. This small collection spans roughly a decade of essays from a celebrated English professor from the Northwest and in it we almost have a sense of eavesdropping on the inner workings of "one who stands in awe." As a reader, you can't help but be profoundly moved. My copy is heavily annotated on almost every page. Thorpe's is a sharp intellect clothed in humility. Throughout these essays, he pulls from mythology, literature, science, and experience to explore topics of beauty, our relationship with the earth, the wild, and the spirit. Thorpe reminds us of the necessity of shattering the surfaces and exploring deeper realities, deeper truths, things we often neglect in our daily lives. If you are on a reflective path, this book will help guide you along, or if you have gotten off track, this book will serve as a call to return. I also highly recommend Doug Thorpe's "A New Earth," a kind of in-depth exploration of parabolic theology through the lens of Blake, the Pearl poet, and George Herbert. The collection "Work and the Life of the Spirit," which he edited, is also worthwhile (although on Amazon they are listed under "Douglas Thorpe" instead, an apparently important distinction).

This book startled my tired imagination. Thorpe writes with an urgency that invigorates and pushes the reader to see connections between a person's physical nature and her sublime sensibilities. In conversation with authors, paintings, the wilderness and his own personal relationships, Thorpe explores the "rapture of the deep" and its necessity.

the sanctity of beauty

Review Date: 2007-12-05
This is an extraordinary book, as beautiful in form as it is profound in substance. Thorpe mingles images of the ordinary with subtle and often penetrating reflection on what matters most in life: the texture of felt experience, the weight of wonder, the complexity of the world we call "natural" and its opening toward a transcendence that breaks into the midst of our experience. "Rapture of the Deep" invites us into a poetic journey, one that offers to deepen the reader's mind and widen her spirit. The book sparkles with insight - into poetry, art, wilderness. Such writing is an exquisite grace, and an unconventional surprise.
