A look at the losers who won the 2004 election

Winston Churchill said that the best argument against democracy was a five-minute talk with the average voter, while Benjamin Disraeli said that a conservative government is an organized hypocrisy. This provides all the hard evidence to show why 51% or so of the American electorate still chose to go with Bush despite his track record of failure and incompetence. The contradictions and hypocrisies of the "moral" right are spelled out in detail with researched figures from the CDC, FEMA, and the Center For Rural Strategies: red states have a higher incidence of drug addiction, AIDS cases due to needle drug use, poverty, physical violence despite being the "Culture Of Life," and general ignorance (almost 90% of 18-to-24-year-olds, the primary military recruiting demographic, can't find Iraq on a map). The best part is the armistice treaty/nonaggression pact at the end, spelling out all of the tradeoffs both sides of the political divide are to endure just to make the noise stop (Michael Moore and Ann Coulter both have to do life without parole in the same Gitmo jail cell).

This little book had me laughing out loud just browsing through it at the bookstore. I won't give away any of the jokes, but I have to hand it to the authors who take a no-holds barred approach to making fun of all the bible slapping, god-fearing, full of hubris and hatred Bushers out there. And for all you Bushers, don't worry. The authors were equal opportunity offenders and wrote Red v. Blue.

Boetry is a fun collection of strange poems (stories) written and illustrated by Beau Beaudoin. Surprising, this book is very different from his first book The Url King (which I highly recommend) but in a very good way. It is so funny and just plain bizarre. I have this book on my coffee table for my guest to read. It is a great conversation piece. Beau Beaudoin is being compared to Shel Silverstein and with good reason. Though there poetic style is similar Beau's illustrations are second to none. I think Beau Beaudoin is going to be the next Dr. Seuss for a new generation.

Another lovely book for adults and kids alike

"Boetry" is a wonderfully fun book of rhyming poems. It is enjoyable for adults as well as for children. Each poem contains common sensical
lessons for readers of all ages. This book is a great companion to Mr. Beaudoin's first book, "The Url King", both with illustrations that will draw you in and capture your heart. They did mine. I absolutely love the illustrations. I hope another book is on the way. I can't wait. My grandchildren are almost as anxious as me =o).

Hugh Herriot was an orpan who lived with his grandfather. When he was twelve, he was given a job as a horse tender at a large house. There he first met John Claverhouse or Bonnie Dundee. Hugh is so inspired by this man, that he joins his army which eventually leads him to fight against his own family. On his journeys he meet many characters who shape his life and personality including a young gypsy girl, Darklis, who holds his heart.

A Bonnie Book!

This is a wonderful story of the first Jacobite rising of 1689 against William of Orange, newly crowned King of England. John of Claverhouse (Bonnie Dundee) was a staunch supporter of King James, who was deposed in favor of William by parliament. The story is told from the perspective of Hugh Harriot, a young lad who soon becomes a devoted follower of Dundee. While intended as a children's or young adult book, this is a rich and detailed account suitable for any age group. Young readers might find it challenging, as the scots brogue of many of the characters is hard to follow at times. Nonetheless, this is a fascinating look at late 17th centruy Scotland and the origins of the Jackobite movement which would later see full fruition in the disasterous rising of 1745 under Bonnie Prince Charlie. John of Claverhouse who became Viscount Dundee by order of King James for his service against the disruptive religeous group known as the Covenenters, is an inspiring Scottish hero, a far greater man of honor and ability than either William Wallace or the rogue Rob Roy in the opinion of this reviewer. But in comparison to the other two he is little known. Dundee was an aristocrat who championed the cause of the Stewarts, and this may account for his being less known. His career was also tragically cut short at the famous battle of Killiecrankie in 1689 where Bonnie Dundee and his Highland army routed the government forces, but sacreficed his life in the process. With his death the Stewart cause was doomed in Scotland, and the rebellion was over almost as soon as it started. The reader will learn about these inspiring events through the eyes of the protagonist, Hugh, who is portrayed as one of Bonnie Dundees devoted followers. Sutcliff's research and skill of telling a story long forgotten are to be commended. This reviewer highly recommends this book either for sophisicated young readers, or adults who enjoy good historical fiction. You can see where the old famous scots tune "Bonnie Dundee" came from by reading this fine work.

From Transylvania to the highest echelon of government, a man who entertained heads of State from around the world, to the halls of government secrecy, this book could easily have been the backdrop for a Tom Clancy or Robert Ludlum espionage novel - but this is NOT fiction - it is fact... and an excellent read. Behind-the-scenes intel gathering and how "things might have been" if not for this amazing little-known figure from our nation's history - a life dedicated to liberty and freedom and whose reconnaissance advanced that cause.

If you've ever wondered what might have happened had the U.S. chosen a different diplomatic path with Castro's Cuba, then this book will interest you. But that's only one facet of this behind the scenes view of the twentieth century through the eyes of one naturalized American in the service of his country. Quite readable and there are enough vignettes of famous people to interest any armchair adventurer.

Collins is Now and Always has been One of the Best

Sammy Weiss has been set up for a fall, played for a sucker, stuffed in a frame, but for squalid, fat Sammy, who always takes the easy way, who seeks the fast buck and believes the brass ring is right around the corner, the con had the ring of truth. When a two bit gambler asked him to collect a $25,000 gambling debt from wealthy Jonathan Radford III for a thousand dollar fee, Sammy believed the job was legit, because he wanted to believe it. He got in a fight with Radford, fled and went to Dan Fortune, one-armed P.I. to alibi him, but Fortune knows trouble when he sees it and he turns Sammy away.

Later Fortune wonders about Sammy and asks around out of curiosity, then finds out Radford had been murdered and the cops think Sammy did it. Fortune doesn't like Sammy for the crime. He doesn't particularly like Sammy either, but right is right, so he embarks on a quest to prove Sammy's innocence.

Collins knows how to plot a mystery, knows how to paint characters good and bad, knows how to hook a reader. He's been doing it for a long time, doing it well and it's often bothered me that he isn't more well known. If, like me, you've been reading him over the years, then you've seen the tremendous influence fast-talking, wise-cracking Dan Fortune has had on Private Eyes that have come later. You see some of him in Kinsey Millhone, Tom Magnum, V.I. Warshawaki and scores of other wisecrackers and you'll be seeing him in a scores of P.I.s whose authors are still toddling around, who have yet to pick up a pen, touch a keyboard or finger a mouse. Collins has given mystery writers and readers so much over the years and if you haven't read him yet, then you've been missing one heck of a writer who's been writing damn fine books for quite a while now.

Sometimes the Brass Ring Really is Only Made of Brass

When I agreed to review a book written by Mr. Collins's wife Gayle, I didn't know he was married to her, as they write under different names. I did a Google search on her and found out who her husband was and was intrigued. Mr. Collins has long been a favorite of my husband's. Ken has been reading him since the '60s, never missing a book, losing a day when each one came out. I've read many of them myself, and now we're re-reading them. Murder is still murder and a good mystery is as good a read now as it ever was.

THE BRASS RAINBOW opens with fat and slovenly Sammy Weiss trying to buy an alibi from Dan Fortune, one-armed private eye with a C-note. Fortune can't be bought, Weiss leaves and later is accused of murder. Fortune doesn't believe he did it, but the cops do and are on his trail. Supposedly Weiss killed the scion of a wealthy family over a $25,000 gambling debt, but Fortune doesn't believe fat Sammy could have gotten himself into any game or games with that kind of stakes.

Mr. Collins gives us a vast and varied cast of characters to choose from as suspects and at times we're as confused as Fortune as he doggedly tries to clear Weiss. There's a gaggle of beautiful babes who flit in and out of the story to tempt Fortune and to lead him down a false trail or two. There's the beautiful gold digger who wants to marry into the wealthy family. There's the wealthy family who want to keep its secrets. There's a bad cop and a good cop. There's mobsters, good and bad. And there is Dan Fortune who has to sift through them all in the search for a killer in this five star book that is a fun read. You should track it down if you can, or maybe check your local library. You won't be sorry.

Perfecto como primera inmersión al mundo de la filosofia budista
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-12

i was given an advanced copy of this book and i didn't want to read it. i hate 'sports' books. i never even picked this up until after it was already in the library and cataloged and on the shelf. man was i an idiot:)

this book is great! wait, it's better than great:) the characters are amazing (and really, they make this book). every distinct, vivid, realistic, snarky, wonderful person in this story rocked.
heller meets people over and over in manhatten rather conviniently, and the story line is a little on the, shall we say, unrealistic side. however, these flaws are totally easy to overlook when the dialog happens. (besides, when was the last time i saw a movie with a realistic story line???)
absolutely unique.

Beautiful, Complex Look at Growing Up

New York City, summer before 9/11. Heller Highland works for Soft Tidings, a messenger service that delivers "news with a personal touch," meaning that the message is spoken to the recipient instead of written. Heller is known as the "Angel of Death" at the office for his innate skill at delivering bad news. During the week following his sixteenth birthday, he encounters a colorful cast of characters, including a Turkish bookseller who becomes his best friend and a pretty coffeeshop worker that he falls in love with.

Burning City is very fast-paced, thanks mainly to the snappy, clever dialogue and scenes describing Heller's bike riding skills. Heller is also a fascinating and incredibly likable character. There was a certain innocence about him that I miss in most teen novels. He wasn't blind, just hopeful. His developing relationships unfold with such compassion and complexity that I was blown away. More than anything, this novel is about relationships and what it means to really care about people. When I put the novel down, I felt like I understood the world around me just a little bit better.
