The book was short enough to keep a young childs' attention. It was fun to read and I liked the illustrations.

This is so great! I have read this to my daughter (2 yrs old) over and over. She requests it by saying "Phut, Phut, Phut", which is her favorite part. We love the opportunities to dramatize sounds, which in turn my daughter mimics. This keeps her interested and enables her to "help me read" the book. Nearly ever page has something she will identify. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Creatively written by Christa Galer and energetically illustrated with a distinctive animation style by Jeffrey Galer, The Big Red Barn the debut title for Purple Crayon Studios (a computer animation and graphics design company) in their "mushtoons", a family oriented children's cartoon book series who's main characters are animated mushroom children. Specifically, The Big Red Barn is an entertaining and "kid pleasing" story about making friends. A family value based story that children preschool through first grade will find immensely entertaining, The Big Red Barn will prove a very welcome addition to any family, school, or community library picture book collection.

"The Big Red Barn is a book that gives parents and teachers a good opportunity to talk with children about being shy and making friends, an important issue to our children today."

When Chip moves next door to a family with two little mushrooms, he decides he wants to make friends with the adventurous mushrooms. He first sees Hope (an adorable pink mushroom with white spots) playing on a swing that looks like it is made out of telephone wire. As Chip (a mushroom with blue and black stripes who wears big glasses) hides behind the blade of grass he feels afraid and doesn't want to ask if he can play too. So, he secretly follows Edger (a blue mushroom with white spots) and Hope as they head for the Big Red Barn.

"Hope and Edger hopped until they came to the stream. Edger said, 'The Big Red Barn is on the other side of the stream. Let's go check it out.' Hope wasn't sure she wanted to go but Edger hopped on and Hope followed him."

When they get to the barn, they find a caterpillar caught in a huge spider web. When the spider appears, Chip grabs a rope and knocks the spider off the ledge.

The picture of the caterpillar (who becomes the mushroom's pet), three mushrooms, blue flowers and bright green grass is worth seeing. The mushrooms are adorable and the colors are beautiful.

Christa & Jeff Galer's story works well with the computer modeled illustrations. Purple Crayon Studios is a computer animation company.

This is a phenomenal story. The author's 22-year passion of research results in a read that you don't want to put down. The fact that it is all based on reality makes it even more enthralling. This is a wild tale.

This would also be a useful read for anyone researching the history of the Canadian penal code and the 'ticket-of-leave' precursor to modern, more liberal ideas, about the potential for rehabiliation in criminals.

I'm very glad I got into this book - highly recommended.

An Intimate and Poignant Friendship Memoir
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-30
Martha McNeil Hamilton and Warren Brown built a friendship over more than twenty years of working together at The Washington Post. What is remarkable about their story is not that they are friends in spite of race (Hamilton is white, Brown is black), but that they have shared a life and death journey.

In November 2001, Hamilton gave Brown one of her kidneys and her generous act saved his life and made their friendship more than just a collegial bond. Brown's kidney transplant and how he and Hamilton came to their decisions is the central story of BLACK & WHITE & RED ALL OVER. Yet this memoir of their friendship accomplishes much more.

Both journalists are members of the baby boom generation born in the Jim Crow South. As they write, "We came to the Post in the middle of a revolution." In writing about their individual lives they provide a personal view of segregation, integration, women's integration into the workforce and even AIDS. Though the focus is clearly on their growing friendship and the transplant, these personal vignettes bring the book to life. And as the nation reconsiders policies such as affirmative action, Hamilton and Brown make it clear that they got in the door with such considerations and they stand behind the idea. They are also honest about why management can sometimes fail in carrying out the idea and therefore sour others on its promise: "The management [at the Post] had been so good at discriminating against blacks and women that at first it had a hard time discriminating amongst them."

Other tales, like that of Hamilton's post-divorce depression and Brown's concerns about his son, are more touching than historic. These moments ease the reading and provide buffers to the more complex information about kidney disease, renal failure and the dangerous miracle of organ transplants.

This friendship memoir also raises questions about how we view such bonds. When does the person you've worked with for years become a true friend? And as we spend more and more time at work, whether it's real time or time via email, cell phones and PDA devices, how do we successfully integrate work and family? For Hamilton and Brown, work and family have nearly become one, which created a broad network of support as the two readied for the transplant surgery.

It's unfortunate that a story about friends of different races sharing in this way is still extraordinary. Hopefully Hamilton and Brown are evidence of the existence of more cross-racial and cross-cultural friendships. Otherwise, what kind of revolution was it after all?

Perfect Book for the Holiday Season

This is a terrific book....full of inspiration, love, hope....it describes a real, true and enduring friendship...between two unlikely people and how far one friend was willing to go to save the other. But, in the end, the book is about much more than friendship, its about how far we have come as a collective society--without some of the social progress of the last forty years or so, one man's life (and perhaps many more) might have been cut short; as a result of his friendship with a woman from a distinctly different background, he received an organ that has aided in extending his life a bit longer.

Both authors are dynamic, interesting people and the writing style is very accessible.

There is something for everyone in this book, whether you like biography, are interested in race relations, organ transplant, friendship, journalists, civil rights/affirmative action....whether you're a writer, a doctor, or just a friend....this is a book that I believe a lot of different people will treasure.

This is a western written by a woman. It will appeal to both men and women, but women will find it refreshing as it is from the point of view of a woman. Horse lovers will find much to like here. I'm guessing this writer will be heard from again.

These three books challenge C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia for a fast paced Christian allegory and in fact, will probably appeal even more to an older audience. The books have everything I was looking for; action, love, philosophy, politics, suspense, and more. If you like Orson Scott Card's books, you will probably like these.

I'm usually cheap when it comes to reading- don't like to "waste" money on books. So of course, I didn't buy them.. but my mom did.

I would have spent lots of money on these books. If you only plan to read a few in your lifetime, make sure these are included. Best book I've read.

Superb mystery suspense thriller !

Review Date: 2001-10-28
You are going to put this terrific thriller at the top of your list of great suspense books of the year. This complex legal - financial novel is about power politics and the drug trade. It is not a quick read, but you will find it difficult to set aside. The husband - wife team(Diane Henry and Nicholas Horrock) who put this mystery together in 1991 as "Blood Red, Snow White" crafted an exceptional book. It is only now getting the attention it deserves

Alec Anton is powerful and powerless. He is a retired prosecuting attorney turned corporate lawyer. Working on defending a couple of crooks involved in high finance of international shipping, he is pulled away by the troubles of a neighbor whose son has disappeared. Was he in the drug business? His legal cases become entangled with romance, money, power, duplicity, sex, and lonliness as we learn Alex is as stupid as other men. The suspenseful cross currents frustrate and enrage, and pull you in.

Characters are well developed. The story makes sense and unfolds only too rapidly whirling Anton into pools of corruption and evil. The good guys aren't. One shocking murder leads to more, and help isn't available from any of his normal sources. It has a good beginning, a well developed middle, and a horrifying ending that fits. There are plenty of good stories from judges, prosecutors, cops, bailiffs, custom agents, legal secretaries, narcs and crooks. You will learn some plausible tales about financing the cocaine business, including the terror and death that it brings.

Don't start this book late in the day, or when you have stuff that needs to get done.

For a book I picked up at the airport, Blood Red, exceeded my expectations. I did miss the fact that it was originally published in 1991, but that detracted very little from the story. The main character, attorney Alec Anton, was well done.If you like Grisham, you'll like Blood Red. As an extra, given that the author is a husband/wife team, makes one of the sub plots that much more intriguing.

I didn't understand what had happened in Yugoslavia, Why did the Serbs, the Croats, the Bosnians, the Albans, act the way th ey did, until I read Blood Red Moon by Tibor Timothy Vajda. The description of the characters and the places is so vivid, it puts you in the middle of the action. And there is plenty of action! You learn the worries, the hopes and the plans of the protagonists and of the powers behind them. They fight for what they believe in. Sometime they win, sometime they fall. The events are sculpting the people, change them.

The kaleidoscope of the unravelling Yugoslavia keeps you turning the pages. You can not help barracking for the goodies and hope that the baddies wil not win at the end. Thoroughly entertaining.
