500 Years in EnglandReview Date: 2004-03-05
Brief introduction to the Kings and QueensReview Date: 2004-03-04
The reigns of the Kings and Queens in this book cover over 500 years, from the reign of King Henry VII of the House of Tudor, to the present Queen Elizabeth II.
It would certainly require a large history book, to seriously document all of the important events that happened in Britain during the last 500 years. But this book gives young readers a nice but brief overview of how England changed during the reign of these monarchs and a little about each one of them, whetting their appetite for more information.
During these 500 years there have been wars and revolutions, attempted invasions of Britain by Spain, Napoleonic France and Nazi Germany, and the rise and fall of the powerful British Empire.
There have been great changes in industry and communication. This book was first published in 1968, and written by L Du Garde Peach with fabulous illustrations by John Kenny.

Another delightful Kipper book.Review Date: 2003-12-11
A charming delight.Review Date: 2003-03-15
Mr. Inkpen's soft, charming illustrations along with his witty and sweet style of story telling make this book so appealing, that you will be happy to read it "over and over" again to your child. Pick it up and fall in love.
Here's the outline: Kipper's friend Pig sends out a wish list for his birthday party, so Kipper visits a pet store to buy him the perfect gift. After carefully considering the many creatures in the shop, ("The stick insect... too much like a stick.") he finds a hamster and brings it home to give to Pig the next day. He names the hamster Roly, after dicovering the "tricks" he can do. Kipper adores Roly and wishes he didn't have to give him up the next day as a present to Pig. After he arrives at Pig's house, he discovers that Pig has received many pets as presents, so many in fact, that Pig, asks Kipper if he wouldn't mind "keeping Roly for him" - much to Kipper's delight.

Extremely popular book with us and visitors, fun for adults tooReview Date: 2006-12-31
There are two parallel but intersecting stories in this and it is actually quite conceptually complex for children to understand. Firstly there is Arnold, who doesn't speak and his pursuit of the mouse - quietly - which none of the others notice or realise is there - so Kipper and Pig are decorating thinking the things Arnold is doing are decorating too. There is the strange appearance of Tiger one of Kipper's other dog friends who drops round iwth a present and a snowball to throw at Kipper. And Pig who goes to wrap up Kipper's present and comes back with it badly wrapped.
It is all the small things of life in a children's book - and all based around Kipper wondering if he likes Christmas day with its presents, or Christmas Eve with its anticipation of Christmas day the best. The really lovely thing about this book is that on the last page is a small flashing light which is the reindeer hat which Kipper has given Arnold. Arnold is wearing standing in the window waiting for Santa. The bulb takes quite a bit of hard wear from little fingers which have endlessly picked away at it since we got this book 3 years ago - it still works, so full marks for reliability!

I am extremely saddened to see it disappear from shelves out of print. I am instead seeing it replaced by NIV versions which have a number of difficulties. It is my prayer that the publisher does not discontinue this age old classic in such a perfect format for the modern day.

but Cambridge puts out a quality of print, paper and leather covers that defies comparison. This little gem is supple, portable, elegant and durable. The addition of the Psalms to the New Testament makes it very special for daily use.

Dave Lister vs. Dave Lister.Review Date: 2005-08-14
Hello, How Do I Do?Review Date: 2003-08-12
When the book begins Dave Lister, or rather "a version" of Dave Lister, has been sentenced to eighteen years Hard Thought in the penal colony Cyberia: eighteen years imprisoned in his own virtual hell. Hard Thought is a punishment where the prisoner's most dreaded fantasies are made real. In Lister's case, being trapped in a world where neighbours play Neil Diamond records full blast. That, and a whole lot of other nasty tortures.
Meanwhile the Lister we know, along with Rimmer, Kryten, Cat and a recently resurrected Kristine Kochanski, are flying in Starbug towards the Omni-zone, the point in space where all the different realities converge. They are diverted from their course back to Red Dwarf when they come across a derelict craft: another Starbug. One where the crew have been slaughtered and Lister is missing.
A dying version of Kochanski tells the others that someone took Lister. They take it upon themselves to find this other Lister and rescue him. This marks the beginning of a series of hilarious misadventures, wrong turnings and bad, bad choices, as we travel across a galaxy populated by genitically engineered lifeforms, broken down 'droids and homicidal villains.
"Last Human" makes you think about what it would be like to meet another version of yourself. Decisions are made that could produce a personality completely different from your own. This is by no means a new idea, but in this case the writer treats it with great wit and humour. Certain ideas and scenes in the novel are based on things that happened in the TV series, but it has all been rearranged and augmented. This is where print can achieve what a limited TV budget can't.
This is science fiction writing at its most humorous. Irreverent, zany and wild.
