While not perfectly organized this first novel for Elizabeth Ashwood does capture the readers heart and mind. I wouldn't say I couldn't put it down but I would say I really enjoyed reading The Red House. The characters were alive, the plot was interesting and the love was steamy and exciting!! I found this novel on accident and picked it up because I live in Tulsa. The writing about Tulsa was pretty good and accurate. Her descriptions of Golf Ball Hill were good enough to make a man feel like he was standing up there looking out on the skyline. There are many good authors from Tulsa and I hope Ms. Ashwood keeps up the good work!!!

Everyone falling in love with everyone else; emotional swordplay left and right, a mysterious murder, and a clairvoyant child. Who could think that Tulsa, OK could be so exciting? Definitely a page turner with intersting characters and dialogue. A great first outing for this writer and looking forward to more!

Recently, I had the pleasure of reading Elizabeth Ashwood's first novel, The Red House. Having grown up in the Tulsa area, I was very proud to see this exciting, mind-bending drama with the Tulsa back-drop. Elizabeth's characters are dynamic and entertaining, they weave their way through this tragic story effortlessly and read like people you've known your whole life. Toward the middle of the book I found myself actually caring what happened to Cera, the main character, which truly had to be Ms. Ashwood's goal. I actually found myself scared at times, not sure if I even wanted to uncover Cera's secrets. I know I'll never look at a rusty old axe the same way again!! The climax when Cera goes back to her home and confronts her nemesis (I won't give this away here!) is just thrilling. Excellent first novel, excellent excellent craft. I would recommend this book to any Tulsan, for that matter, anyone looking for a good read!

We discovered this book at our local library, and after renewing twice, had to purchase it for our own collection. This book is not only beautifully illustrated, and very nicely written, but it inspires readers (young and old) to imagine what gifts lie in unexpected surprises. A good lesson for us all. Just lovely. You won't be disappointed.

Critically acclaimed illustrator Bob Staake presents The Red Lemon, a picturebook about a lemon farmer named McPhee, who grows bright yellow lemons. But among his fruits, one day there appears a red lemon! "Who'd squeeze this red thing in their afternoon tea? / Who'd buy a red lemon from Farmer McPhee?" Farmer McPhee throws the red lemon away to another island. But the red lemon's story does not end there - two hundred years later, the yellow lemon orchid is reduced to weeds, while the seeds from the red lemon have created a grove of red lemon trees beloved for miles around, because red lemons are six times as sweet! The style of illustration, in which people and objects are rendered as basic shapes, adds an unforgettable individual touch to this delightful read-aloud story.

Wow! We just LOVE this book! Super fun and creative...a must for your little one!

This is a precusor to some of the more recent historical fiction by authors such as Margaret George. I picked this up as a kid in the used bin at a bookstore on Amsterdam Ave. and around 118th Street (near Columbia) for about 50 cents in 1978. This book was my first exposure to the Norman Conquest, but from an English point of view, and I re-read it once or twice in the next few years. Just recently, I picked it up again to see if it was as good as I remembered, and it stood up well. There are now many more sources of historical record regarding the Norman Conquest that are not weighted with the natural prejuicide of the conquerors (example: David Howarth's 1066 - The Year of the Conquest), but at the time, R. Sprague's book was an engrossing and entertaining precursor to those works.

Gold star!

This is a really terrific book. The main character is fictional, but many of the other characters are very much real. I liked this account of the Norman Conquest, especially the way that Sprague depicted King Harold II's personality. An all-around good book.

From that point on, everything will change for this young heir.Throughout this book, Aelfred will lose nearly everything, but in the end, he comes to know the true meaning of sacrafice and true love

Red River Prosecutor recalls the true incidents of the wild and woolly 1960's and 70's in Love County, Oklahoma. The stories hold the reader spellbound with their intensity and their realness. I know because I was a teenager who grew up there and lived in the community during those crazy times. I can assure the readers that all the events are accurate. Most of the people described in the book I knew personally. Judge Bacon masterfully recalls the personalties with great detail and as I look back some 30 years the events are brought back vividly. This is better than any fiction fairytale of crime and its consequences. You will never regret your time spent with this account of taming rural Oklahoma.

The book is true, it's graphic, it's real life and a must.

Today a retired Settlement Conference Judge for the Oklahoma Supreme Court, Ken Bacon, the author is an author with a unique life story. His collection of personal memories is not some staid history of mid-20th century legal procedures. Red River Prosecutor is the two-fisted tale of one man's fight to wrench order out of the chaos in the toughest are of America's wildest state. What sets Red River Prosecutor apart is the author. The product of a broken home, he fought through an abandoned and parentless childhood, survived the bloody and violent oilfields of Kansas and Oklahoma and by sheer gut's, went on to become the Chief Judge for all Courts of Appeal in Oklahoma. Red River Prosecutor is all true, it's graphic and it is real life. The book review in the Oklahoma City newspapaer The Daily Oklahoman, April 7, 1996 said it best: "This is a TV miniseries, for sure. Even better if it could star the author."

I first heard of Red River from my friend. She told me that I should give this a try since I love to read manga. Anyway, I bought the whole 28 books in Chinese and stayed up all night reading them..They are so hard to put down!! My husband came home from work only to find me still up and reading (I was reading when he left for work)! Imaging his horror! :O haha...

Yuri is a normal Japanese girl who suddenly got sucked into a puddle on the street and is brought to Anatolia in ancient Middle East.

The artwork is beautiful and the storyline is wonderful. The whole manga is such a page turner!!! It make you want to know what's going to happen to Yuri and Prince Kail next. The English version is on #5 now, still a long way to go, but it is worth the wait!! :) I am collecting the English version as well (for myself and my husband who cannot read Chinese) I am hooked on Shinohara Chie's manga ever since I bought the Red River! It is a wonderful manga that will leave you wanting to read them again and again...

Pleased and beyond

This manga is more for the mature audience. Nudity, violence, sexuality, war. This is manga like no other around at this time. Close to factual history of the what is current day Turkey, a young japanese girl named Yuri, is dragged through a puddle into another world. During the bronze era of ancient times. She haphazardly throws herself around and falls into the supporting arms of a prince.
Turns out, Yuri was taken from her time to here to be killed by the Queen of the Hittites as a sacrifice to curse Prince Kail. The prince who saved her. He saves her and throughout the story, keeps her by his side, at first as a political ploy and to keep her safe from the queen. But as the story continues romance blossoms along with jealousy with many other historical figures trying to take her. She is given god like status as, Ishtar. Goddess of love, war, motherhood, etc.

This story is delicious from start to finish. So much so, as other reviewers I hungered so much for the story to continue I ended up buying the whole japanese series to quench my hunger. The art and story is fantastic following along daintily to actual historical facts. Being a mature story it follows some serious moments that most manga don't touch as to make the reader feel to sad, or angry. It follows realistically the bad and the good of a life that might've happened as such.

My only complaint is that Yuri is always more elegant appearing with her hair up, not the fluff she always has. Of course this manga was started in late 80's early 90's so my complaint can't really count.

This story is engaging, romantic, heart breaking, and something most americans have never had the chance to see and read. A great book for the more mature audience.

Reading this book I learned a lot of new things about the infamous SA-2 family of missiles and the most important was the many versions used worldwide and, of course, the operational stories which were very good indeed (including countermesures and tactics used against the SA-2). The drawings and the photos are excellent and you will learn easily to distinguish the various SA-2 launchers and missiles from minor but important details. I wish Mr Zaloga will make the same work for other SAMs in the future, like SA-3 and SA-6.

An excellent book

Zaloga's research is impeccable in this book and his writing does justice to this missile system, a mainstay of the PVO for many decades and a pioneering weapon system. Very little has appeared in the West regarding the SA-2, despite its long operational history and the fact that it has been exported throughout the world. Well-illustrated, the only piece that is missing is details about unit administration and training, but it is such a minor piece when compared to the wealth of information provided that it in no way detracts from Red SAM. Definitely worth a read.

A good reference guide to the famous (or infamous) SAM that defined a generation. The book follows the development, the tactics and the effect of the weapon, its strong and weak points. Full of black and white photos, two pages of color illustration, it is worth the price.

Red Sky is a quite interesting and plausible thriller set during the Cold War. Mr. Mullane, a retired astronaut, shows quite a bit of writing savvy and his deep technical knowledge shines through the novel without overpowering it. I found the book a genuine page-turner, and I highly recommend it. Readers should note that this is a novel for adults. It contains realistic adult relationships, including sexual situations.

Of all the different types of sci-fi and sci-fantasy that I read, this is my favorite kind. I love sci-fi set in the near future about space exploration and first contact with new worlds. I love rockets and space shuttles and astronauts in environmental suits. This book has the realistic sci-fi elements I love plus suspense, espionage, sex, and romance. Red Sky is primarily a space adventure. Modern day American astronauts are sent on a secret mission to investigate a Soviet communications platform that may be housing a "star wars" type weapon. This weapon was designed to end the cold war, and it will if the Americans don't get to it first.

Red Sky is full of drama as we look behind the scenes into the lives of the astronauts and the motivation that drives them to go higher and faster without perceptible fear. We spend time with the team that supports them as well as those that command them. Mullane, a former astronaut, creates a very complete and credible picture of NASA. He also lets us see inside the break-up of the Soviet Union. Or at least, one possible reason behind the break-up, the internal scheming, the plotting, the willingness to do anything for power.

Mullane has a good story based on a solid premise. He writes as if he lived this story, he is comfortable, he knows his business. (I love the fight in space with screwdrivers and wrenches rather than laser weapons...too cool and probably more realistic.) I even starting getting into the characters that I did not really like. I wanted them to change and grow. I still want to know these people. I wish Mullane would continue to write and populate his new books with some of these characters say 10, 20, 30 years into the future. Can Mark continue to be a hero in a desk job? Did Judy learn to live her own life? Did Bob and Anna find a way to be together? Did Mason see new patterns in the sky, an extraterrestrial thing? And did Maksimov agree to create something for the US? Tell us Mullane. Give us another book.

Sex is very explicit in the context of these complex, adult relationships. Lots of beer drinking, some violence. I highly recommend this book for the mature reader.

Great book! Although I am not a skier, I stayed up two whole nights because I couldn't put it down!! It starts slow--the author is meticulous with detail--allowing you to get a good feel for the characters/personalities and their surroundings. I felt as if I was there--on the slopes and a quaint skiing village! Once the weaving of suspense begins it quickly grabs you! It is then hard to put the book down because the suspense just keeps on mounting!! There were times I actually held my breath!! The book is a suspense thriller--a must read!!!

The cover is pretty small on this website, so I can't say much for certain, but (who knows?) maybe the picture was taken someplace I've actually skied! I like snow and skiing, and I love mountains, so, all things considered, that's enough to make the cover pretty attractive to me. The title is nice, too -- terse, short words, red letters, kinda serious looking, which is all good for a novel about danger and terrorists, etc. I've known the author for about 24 years, and he's a really nice guy -- warm, friendly, fair-minded, optimistic. He's thoughtful, deliberate, a conservative free-market capitalist, which is all good. So far, I really like this book. I may purchase it, and even maybe read it. No, not may, not maybe, ... PROBABLY.
