Red River Prosecutor recalls the true incidents of the wild and woolly 1960's and 70's in Love County, Oklahoma. The stories hold the reader spellbound with their intensity and their realness. I know because I was a teenager who grew up there and lived in the community during those crazy times. I can assure the readers that all the events are accurate. Most of the people described in the book I knew personally. Judge Bacon masterfully recalls the personalties with great detail and as I look back some 30 years the events are brought back vividly. This is better than any fiction fairytale of crime and its consequences. You will never regret your time spent with this account of taming rural Oklahoma.
The book is true, it's graphic, it's real life and a must.

Today a retired Settlement Conference Judge for the Oklahoma Supreme Court, Ken Bacon, the author is an author with a unique life story. His collection of personal memories is not some staid history of mid-20th century legal procedures. Red River Prosecutor is the two-fisted tale of one man's fight to wrench order out of the chaos in the toughest are of America's wildest state. What sets Red River Prosecutor apart is the author. The product of a broken home, he fought through an abandoned and parentless childhood, survived the bloody and violent oilfields of Kansas and Oklahoma and by sheer gut's, went on to become the Chief Judge for all Courts of Appeal in Oklahoma. Red River Prosecutor is all true, it's graphic and it is real life. The book review in the Oklahoma City newspapaer The Daily Oklahoman, April 7, 1996 said it best: "This is a TV miniseries, for sure. Even better if it could star the author."

In this volume Yuri faces several princesses who have joined Kail's seragilo. Kail wishes to make Yuri his wife, but first Yuri must show that she can run the seragilo without anyone's help. The princesses cross the line when they threaten Kail's security and peace of mind, and Yuri quickly handles the situation after learning, from Kail's ex, why Kail has never dismissed her. It is also made clear just how much the Hittite Empire worships their beloved Ishtar as the Empire fears for her health. This series is a must-read for fans of both manga and history.

Now I stumbled on Red river by accident and sure am happy that I did. It is a great story and it makes it very difficult for you to put the book down once its in your hands. The story has so many twists and turns that I can honestly it will be unbearable waiting for the next volume to come out because every Red river manga ends in a cliff hanger.
Yuri is a girl from the present world that gets dragged into the past literally. She meets Prince Kail and becomes the admiration of all man. She is a ver ygood model of what a woman should strive for. Not only is she kind but she is also strong and just. She teaches the hittites much including the New King Kail.
I don't want to give anything away but I just want you all to know how really great this story is and it would not be a waste in buying the series.
I hope this review was helpful.

In this volume of Red River, Yuri is being tormented by five of the seven princesses that vie for the honor of being Kail's Queen. Yuri overcomes these petty, immature power plays, but then the princesses start to get murdered one by one with the signs all pointing to Yuri. Nakia of course is involved and the search for the real killer takes up most of the volume. Finally the killer is found, but Yuri is now in the clutches of one of Kail's trusted generals that has been brainwashed by Nakia. What will happen next. Volume 15 is great because you get to see the power plays that take place within a harem, a spicy scene between Kail and Yuri, and a flashback pic to see Kail and Zannanza as little Princes. I can't wait till the next volume.

I first heard of Red River from my friend. She told me that I should give this a try since I love to read manga. Anyway, I bought the whole 28 books in Chinese and stayed up all night reading them..They are so hard to put down!! My husband came home from work only to find me still up and reading (I was reading when he left for work)! Imaging his horror! :O haha...
Yuri is a normal Japanese girl who suddenly got sucked into a puddle on the street and is brought to Anatolia in ancient Middle East.
The artwork is beautiful and the storyline is wonderful. The whole manga is such a page turner!!! It make you want to know what's going to happen to Yuri and Prince Kail next. The English version is on #5 now, still a long way to go, but it is worth the wait!! :) I am collecting the English version as well (for myself and my husband who cannot read Chinese) I am hooked on Shinohara Chie's manga ever since I bought the Red River! It is a wonderful manga that will leave you wanting to read them again and again...

This manga is more for the mature audience. Nudity, violence, sexuality, war. This is manga like no other around at this time. Close to factual history of the what is current day Turkey, a young japanese girl named Yuri, is dragged through a puddle into another world. During the bronze era of ancient times. She haphazardly throws herself around and falls into the supporting arms of a prince.
Turns out, Yuri was taken from her time to here to be killed by the Queen of the Hittites as a sacrifice to curse Prince Kail. The prince who saved her. He saves her and throughout the story, keeps her by his side, at first as a political ploy and to keep her safe from the queen. But as the story continues romance blossoms along with jealousy with many other historical figures trying to take her. She is given god like status as, Ishtar. Goddess of love, war, motherhood, etc.
This story is delicious from start to finish. So much so, as other reviewers I hungered so much for the story to continue I ended up buying the whole japanese series to quench my hunger. The art and story is fantastic following along daintily to actual historical facts. Being a mature story it follows some serious moments that most manga don't touch as to make the reader feel to sad, or angry. It follows realistically the bad and the good of a life that might've happened as such.
My only complaint is that Yuri is always more elegant appearing with her hair up, not the fluff she always has. Of course this manga was started in late 80's early 90's so my complaint can't really count.
This story is engaging, romantic, heart breaking, and something most americans have never had the chance to see and read. A great book for the more mature audience.

Reading this book I learned a lot of new things about the infamous SA-2 family of missiles and the most important was the many versions used worldwide and, of course, the operational stories which were very good indeed (including countermesures and tactics used against the SA-2). The drawings and the photos are excellent and you will learn easily to distinguish the various SA-2 launchers and missiles from minor but important details. I wish Mr Zaloga will make the same work for other SAMs in the future, like SA-3 and SA-6.
An excellent book

Zaloga's research is impeccable in this book and his writing does justice to this missile system, a mainstay of the PVO for many decades and a pioneering weapon system. Very little has appeared in the West regarding the SA-2, despite its long operational history and the fact that it has been exported throughout the world. Well-illustrated, the only piece that is missing is details about unit administration and training, but it is such a minor piece when compared to the wealth of information provided that it in no way detracts from Red SAM. Definitely worth a read.

A good reference guide to the famous (or infamous) SAM that defined a generation. The book follows the development, the tactics and the effect of the weapon, its strong and weak points. Full of black and white photos, two pages of color illustration, it is worth the price.

Great book! Although I am not a skier, I stayed up two whole nights because I couldn't put it down!! It starts slow--the author is meticulous with detail--allowing you to get a good feel for the characters/personalities and their surroundings. I felt as if I was there--on the slopes and a quaint skiing village! Once the weaving of suspense begins it quickly grabs you! It is then hard to put the book down because the suspense just keeps on mounting!! There were times I actually held my breath!! The book is a suspense thriller--a must read!!!

The cover is pretty small on this website, so I can't say much for certain, but (who knows?) maybe the picture was taken someplace I've actually skied! I like snow and skiing, and I love mountains, so, all things considered, that's enough to make the cover pretty attractive to me. The title is nice, too -- terse, short words, red letters, kinda serious looking, which is all good for a novel about danger and terrorists, etc. I've known the author for about 24 years, and he's a really nice guy -- warm, friendly, fair-minded, optimistic. He's thoughtful, deliberate, a conservative free-market capitalist, which is all good. So far, I really like this book. I may purchase it, and even maybe read it. No, not may, not maybe, ... PROBABLY.

The Front Beneath Fronts - Sometimes "Here be Monsters" Still Applies

World War II, Russian Front. With the enemy of the Iron Will in full retreat and soldiers finding themselves both tired and hungry and starved for provisions, what could make both sides forget their climactic ending? Victory - maybe. Too much Vodka - it would have to be some really good vodka. Vampires - hmmm, that might do it.
When I picked up the first Red Snow, I wanted to keep reading and know how the world would end for the people involved. As viewers catching a glimpse of warring factions you see (1) people trying to survive both the terror of the Germans and the fear inspired by hungry forces pushed by the bayonet tips of Stalin's rifles, (2) German soldiers finding themselves trapped in a desert of snow and wondering how they will make it out alive, (3) Russian soldiers that are both hungry and cold and in constant fear that Stalin will find something flawed in their performances, (4) and the enemy that no one expects. It is the enemy that no one expects that makes the story both interesting and odd, too, with fangs finding fields no longer rich and people encountering nightmares that go well beyond sharpened metal and rapid-fire projectiles.
Thinking how terrible that would be; finding yourself on the Russian front and trying to survive only to find out that the stuff of legend is not the stuff of legend. It is the stuff of "right next door."
For anyone that enjoys a different approach to vampires, this is a great story with a lot to offer. It has a plethora of characters, monsters both inhumane and inhuman all thrown together, and a fight for survival that really doesn't come with a guaranteed get-out-of-jail-free card. I found myself really drawn to that and to the way it was presented, with the coloration showing how bleak the situation could possibly be and the shadows showcasing just how deep that place beyond vision goes.
It is a stand-alone story, too, and does not require any background in the 30 Days of Night world. Perhaps that is a good thing for some people that want a good story and do not want the commitment of having to keep up with an ongoing struggle, too, or just something that 30 Days of Night fans will enjoy.
I highly recommend this as both a read and reread.

First off let me say that since Ben Templesmith is the original illustrator it's wonderful that he got a shot at a story of his own. If you have read Singularity 7 or Wormwood(one of my favourites), you will enjoy the dark grittiness and the complete lack of regard towards the main characters well being. As such it was also nice to see that tragedy comes back in full force, you WILL feel sorry for the poor young Russian boy. I'm not going to divulge the name of all the characters because I think you should get to know them on your own. o.k. Then here we go.
The Story. In a step back from 30 days of nights normal time plot this takes place during WWII in 1941. Hitler ordered a large squadron of soldiers to try to break into Northern Russia by way of Finland. Some get through but as a hole the mission fails miserably, and the remaining Germans, with a horribly masochistic leader, in the story are a result of this. While the remaining Germans are doing all they can eradicate any Russians they find the Russians are trying to survive the cold, warfare, and starvation. You meet a peasant family who have blockaded themselves into a barn who have plenty of food and underground tunnels. The is a brigade of Russian soldiers with a lone English soldier who speaks Russian and German. These are the main Humans in thr story. Then comes the blood thirsty undead led by an extremely creepy little girl and her much older male companion. The rest of the vampire are pretty much just fodder.
The art. Since the story takes place in the winter of northern Russia during the many months of perpetual night there is a lot of snow( freaking duh) and things in the distance are blurred, such as it is during the night. There is plenty of blood and guts and the facial expressions on the characters give you sense of terror. As always I have found Ben Templesmiths artwork unique, and in a world dominated by big breasted anime characters( although nothing wrong with that), super shinny super heroes and horrible pretentious abstract artists, it's nice to see something a little different. His artwork is not by any means pretty but that is what caught my eye in the first place. It's a blend of computer generated colours, none of the colour is inked , the colours in all of Ben's art are from a a collection of pictures he has taken for almost a decade which he then paints, and traditional outlining. If you end up liking his art from this i suggest you pick up Wormwood: Gentleman Corpse and Fell which is written by Warren Ellis and illustrated by Ben Templesmith.
If i was going to complain about anything i would have to the length is a little short. Seeing as i grew up with the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen I got used to the length of that. It's also a good thing because it doesn't overstay its welcome. It gets what needs to be done done and it does it well. Overall this is a great addition to the 30 days of night series and I hope that he continues to add his talents to it.

Without doubt, The Red Star will, with its outstanding production and conceptual design, usher in a new visual front for comic books-or at the very least, make some skeptics appreciate the possibilities presented by computerized artwork. Utilizing wonderful 3D modeling and texturing techniques (which are seamlessly blended with the penciled artwork, I might add) comparable to the stuff done in some of today's video games and animated features, this new comic has to be seen to be believed.
Christian Gossett and B.J. Kayl have concocted a perfect combination of fantasy and sci-fi in a story of epic war that is truly engrossing. The narrative style is smoothly sophisticated and will certainly please the die-hard Alan Moore fans. Gossett and Kayl's novel-like prose demonstrates a keen understanding and respect for the readers' intelligence. His meticulous sequence of the URRS' invasion made me feel as if I was on the scene of the action.
Computerized comic book art (i.e. J.U.D.G.E. and GearStation) has always left me somewhat indifferent, but the unique and quality production of The Red Star simply left me in awe from start to finish. The art team (with Gossett penciling) have done such a great job of blending the CG and non-CG art that it is often hard to discern what has been computerized and what has been penciled. The end result is an impressive mixture of early Frank Miller penciling style, fantastic panel layouts, and beautiful coloring.
With its distinctive art production and its equally absorbing premise, I strongly urge you to give The Red Star a try. I'm convinced that you will come to agree with me that there is presently nothing like it on the market.

The concept of Red Star is unique. It is about U.R.R.S (United Republic of Red Star), a country governed by power-crazy dictator. The best part of this collection is you will feel with the characters, you will feel sorry for the loss Maya has suffered, feel frustrated with Marcus while fighting the losing battle, feel anxious with Makita while trying to go to her father and most heart-warming moments of all, you will feel with Andrea when she has the chance to kill an enemy solider, who is mere a child (who is Makita btw) but didn't kill her even though that might save her life.
U.R.R.S is uncannily similar to cold war U.S.S.R. If you like politically intrigued stories, this book will be a special treat. Even you don't know nuts about history or about Russia, you still are in for a thought-provking story with visually stunning artwork.
Only one gripe though. Since it is a thick book, some spreads of artwork are lost in the binding. Otherwise, it would be much more astounding 3D artwork which is not unlike watching the dvd intro before playing PS-2 games.
Give this book a try. It has all issues 1-9 of volume 1 including Battle at Khar-Dhtha Gate, Worker's Tale, Award-winning Run Makita Run, Battle of Norkorka. Now I'm anxiously waiting for vol 2 collected edition to come out.

Although this book was first published in Russia some 40 years ago, this the first English translation. Written by a distinguished former Soviet submariner, it is a moving, vivid and first-hand account of life in the submarine service of the USSR during the bleak years of WW2. The author died in 1993.
Greatly feared by the Germans, I found it fascinating to learn how they employed extensive counter-measures to ensure the entire Soviet Fleet was kept bottled up. In this way German U-Boats were then able to strike at allied and even neutral shipping with impunity. Then we learn how, in 1943, all that began to change as the Allies learned how to strike back at their, hitherto unseen, enemy.
For those with an interest in the war at sea, it is very easy to become so preoccupied with U-Boats and the North Atlantic campaign that the struggles undergone by our Soviet Allies (as they were at that time) are completely overlooked. The involvement of Finnish Forces on the side of Germany (Finland eventually withdrew from the War in 1944) was an additional threat of which I previously knew very little.
Altogether a fascinating, well written and worthwhile book which, for me at least, has opened up a whole new area of interest in the war at sea during 1939-1945.

A Rare Look at Submarine Warfare from the Soviet Perspective

The vast majority of books on WWII submarines focus on German U-boats and Battle of the Atlantic. "Red Star under the Baltic: A Firsthand Account of Life on board a Soviet Submarine in World War 2," by Viktor Korzh offers a completely fresh examination into a virtually unknown aspect of WWII submarine warfare: life inside a soviet combat boat.
"Red Star" was written in the early 1960s, when the events portrayed were still reasonably fresh in the author's mind, and published in Russian in 1966 under the title "Reserve of Strength." Korzh was the chief engineer on three Soviet boats operating on the exceedingly treacherous Baltic Sea. The narrow and shallow body of water was a deathtrap for submarines. Korzh's superb memoir details the abysmal life and death conditions Soviet sailors endured on their primitive but stoutly constructed boats. Some of the events Korzh was exceedingly lucky. Two boats he left were each sunk on their next patrol. "Red Star" will interest everyone who enjoys reading about WWII naval matters in general, and U-boats in particular.
Authentic Russian accounts of naval service are very rare, and memoirs in a frontline submarine exceedingly so. Everyone familiar with "Das Boot" and life aboard German U-boats will appreciate and see obvious similarities between that account and Korzh's recollections: hardship, terror, comradeship, and death. Korzh died in St Petersburg in 1993. "Red Star under the Baltic: A Firsthand Account of Life on board a Soviet Submarine in World War 2," by Viktor Korzh. ISBN 1-844151-38-7 (Pen & Sword), photos, hardcover, d.j. 224 pages. Recommended.

The vast majority of ink spilled on WWII submarines has centered upon German U-boats and the Allied effort to defeat them. The reason is understandable: the German U-Boat campaign offers readers an impressive array of engagements, personalities, and technological advances; its geographic scope was substantial, blanketing the Atlantic Ocean from its icy northern reaches to its balmy southern climes, and around Africa's horn into the Indian Ocean; and many of its commanders and crewmen have made themselves available for interviews, commentary, and have written about their experiences.
Unfortunately, history's laser-like focus on German U-boats has made it more difficult for studies on other aspects of WWII submarine warfare (including the role American submarines in the Pacific played in defeating imperial Japan) to receive the publicity and readership they deserve. A particularly heavy shroud has covered Soviet submarine operations from 1939-1945, and the fact that this small navy helped Britain and the United States defeat Nazi Germany. Hopefully, Korzh's "Red Star under the Baltic" will buck this unfortunate and undeserved trend.
By training a mechanical engineer, Korzh served as the chief engineer on three different Soviet boats on and under the Baltic Sea. His account graphically details life and death on what many have called "a German lake." Indeed, the Baltic was an exceedingly treacherous place for enemy submarines. A quick glance a map of this region will show you why this was so. Navigationally, the long and narrow island-strewn Baltic was a complicated body of water to operate in, and its shallow depth made hiding from hunting warships doubly difficult (and in many cases, fatally impossible). When the Germans captured the Soviet bases in the central sea region early in the war, the Soviet Baltic Fleet retreated northeast to Kronstadt and Leningrad. The Kriegsmarine did its best to bottle these submarines up in the narrow reaches of the Gulf of Finland, and blanketed the narrow entrance with a nearly impenetrable anti-submarine defensive network of tens of thousands of mines, anti-submarine nets, shore-based artillery, surface warships, and air cover.
"Red Star" was written in the early 1960s, when the events portrayed were still reasonably fresh in the author's mind, and originally published in Russian in 1966 under the title "Reserve of Strength." Presented in the first person, Korzh's superb record details the abysmal life and death conditions Soviet sailors endured on their primitive but stoutly constructed boats.
As readers will quickly discover, Korzh was one lucky sailor. His first patrol in early 1942 was aboard S-7, which returned safely only to be torpedoed by a Finnish submarine on its next patrol. The entire crew was lost except for those fortunate enough to have been on the bridge when disaster struck. Korzh, however, was not aboard because he had been transferred to another boat, S-12. His extensive second patrol sank two freighters and returned safely after suffering heavy depth charging and a very narrow escape. S-12 was lost with its entire crew the following year, but the lucky Korzh had again been posted to third boat, jumping again off the devil's shovel. His third patrol in March 1945 was aboard L-21, a large mine-laying submarine. The patrol was exceedingly successful and accounted for three warships and a tanker.
"Red Star" will interest everyone who enjoys reading about WWII naval matters in general, and U-boats in particular. Authentic Russian accounts of naval service are very rare, and memoirs in a frontline submarine exceedingly so. Everyone familiar with Das Boot and life aboard German U-boats will appreciate and see obvious similarities between that account and Korzh's recollections: hardship, terror, comradeship, and death. German accounts of life aboard a U-boat in 1944 and 1945, when simply going to sea was the equivalent of a death sentence, are rare because so few crewmen from that period managed to survive. It was under similar conditions that Korzh and his comrades operated from 1942 onward in the dangerous waters of the Baltic. Viktor Korzh died in St Petersburg in 1993. "Red Star under the Baltic" is his legacy. Thankfully, it is now available in English. I highly recommend it.

I found this book both charming and insightful. Used it with my child to look at what was around us in a new light. We played a game imagining what else the Red String could do. We made Red String bracelets that we both wore. I also found comfort in it as a metaphor for how a child gradually becomes an individual seperate from his Mother (The Red String, child, leaving the drawer, Mother) and has adventures that lead him further from home while remaining connected. I think of this as I watch my child grow and strike out in delightful ways.

Wonderful book with simple creative illustrations -- would be great to use for motivation and ideas for a child's own creative picture-making...would be great in a classroom as well... each student could make a picture with a red string and they could all be attached and displayed. Teaches perspective, point of view, creativity, and imagination. If you like this one, check out The Purple Crayon by a different artist. Similar idea.
