all of the Bow Wow board books are amazing. My toddler loves to "tell" the story and acts out the story along with her big sister. All though geared towards toddlers my pre-school daughter loves it as well. They are great pre-readers and really let your child run with their imagination!

Pattern at its simplest.

This board book, although written for toddlers, is a great introduction to pattern for preschoolers or K-1 students with special needs. It will also strike their funny-bone as the simple ABAB pattern is interrupted in a surprising way.

Funny funny board book!

As a mom and an early childhood educator, I highly recommend this board book! Deceptively simple, it packs a lesson on patterns and the most basic form of humor. This book cracks kids up. I laughed out loud the first time I read it! Love it, and so do the little ones.

A great place to start planning your trip

Visiting California with one book is no easy task but Eyewitness does a very good job of creating a book that can be used easily. With so much to do the regionalization of California in this book is one of its most useful aspects. Although I wish they would break it into northern and southern California if you are going to be visiting the state this is a great place to start looking.

Good guide

I like Eyewitness travel guides, even if I usually complement them with other, more "wordy" ones. This one, like all the other ones I own, is a good, relatively short (but heavy!) guide very helpful to give you good hints about what to see over an area as large as California. The nice pictures are always a big plus.

On the minus side, you will find only a few words about 95% of the locations described in this guide, so if you are looking for something deeper, of if you like historical anecdotes about the places you visit, this guide is not ideal. Another minus is the relatively scant number of hotels and restaurants listed in the guide, surely a result of the large area covered. Also, the information you are given on restaurants is almost invariably composed of 20 words or so. So, if good food is important on your trips, this guide is again not ideal. From the perspective of both real content and good food advice, I think the "Moon" handbooks are vastly superior to the Eyewitness guides. However, the few and B&W pictures in the Moon series will sometimes make even great places sound or look dull.

Again on the plus side, the maps are useful.

Overall, this a good guide to use as a starting point to plan a trip, but if you really care about what you see, you will probably have to buy other material too, and I would suggest looking for a Moon guide to have an ideal combination.

Good for lazy travellers

I am never the type of hard working traveller who would dig into lengthy travel books to find out everything. I found this book very useful for me. It's all in color (so, it's a pleasure to read, though that makes it heavy), and it has great maps which highlights all attractions in addition to detailed maps in the end of the book. That keeps me focus on what I want in a very easy way, instead of searching for where that particular attraction is.

I went to San Francisco, and places as far as 3 hours driving to north, and 4 hours driving to south. For San Francisco part, this book even included different architecture style, which greatly enhanced my experience. As for others, most of the places they describe, they include pictures also. This helps me to know what to expect.

Though I don't like it to be so heavy, it's my favorite among my collection.

Trying to live a life centered on love of Christ, and open to his gifts, is not an easy challenge in today's busy world. This new edition of Fr. Basil Pennington's CALL TO THE CENTER is just what I have been looking for as the next book selection for our centering prayer support group. The chapters are short--excellent for an evening's discussion. It is written in a conversational style, but filled with insights for deepening prayer, and helps for avoiding some of the common difficulties. This is a book that can be read and re-read. Fr. Basil's enthusiasm and genuine love for centering prayer will certainly be an inspiration to those new to this form of prayer, and an encouragement for those who have been following the Gospel's invitation to deeper prayer--the book's subtitle--in the years since, as Fr. Basil reminds us, the "Second Vatican Council has made it most clear that all are called to intimate holiness, to the joy of contemplative union with the Lord."

Call To The Center: The Gospel's Invitation To Deeper Prayer is a collection of meditations by M. Basil Pennington (a Cistercian monk of St. Joseph's Abby in Spencer, Massachusetts) on the Gospel of Matthew. This reflections fairly reverberate with an abiding faith and the power of opening one's heart to God. Light, duty, faith, and reverence form core principles in this enlightening work which is a very highly recommended addition to Christian Studies reading lists and library collections.

The book's title says it all: it is something like a hearing aid, helping us listen to the Gospels with the ears of our hearts. Pennington is so deeply experienced and so learned in this subject that he speaks with supreme authority. He is a teacher to be trusted.
This book will be both a guide for beginners and support for those far along the way of prayer. It will be much loved.

The Fifties was a great time for Detroit and the look of their products reflected the carmakers optimism for the good times that were sweeping over the middle classes during the decade. Never mind racial tensions and the Cold War didn't everybody deserve to drive around in a flamboyant dream on wheels.

Books about autos of the period are steady sellers but I think this volume can't be beat. To get over sixteen hundred color photos and graphics in one book is pretty impressive. I like the editorial format, too, with each model getting a page per year. The mix of car company PR shots, period ads and graphics, dealer showroom and gas station photos plus the captions makes the pages sparkle. There is a very comprehensive index in the back, which makes Cars of the Fabulous 50s probably the best reference book available.

Another book (by the same publisher) 'American Cars of the 1950s (ISBN 1412711568) covers the same ground but has an interesting twist in only using car graphics from ads and brochures for the images. It is also a square, chunky 320-page book. Also available are the same two book covering cars of the Sixties.

Flammang's book takes you back into the fifties decade where you relive not only the cars but the social and political times as well. The book has lavish color pictures of almost every American car produced during that period. It's excellent reference and a collectible treasure for the baby boomers who remember their early years.

Costello has crafted a tale that is truly worthy of a young Stephen King with his tale of a an old man's eerie cartoon strips that are either forseeing future tragedy or perhaps creating them.

Scott Bowman, the novel's main character, fights to keep his family safe from the horrific events foretold in the ancient cartoonist's ink sketches. Only, will mistakes from his own past come back to haunt him?

Displaying a knack for tension, suspense and character development, Costello easily draws the reader into the tale and won't let go until the very end.

Simply awesome!!! And if you like this one, you then have to read his third book "Captain Quad". Overall an excellent read!!!

Review Date: 2001-05-15
Choosing Quality Child Care, from the American Red Cross, is packed with useful information and lots of worksheets to help parents navigate this most important of searches. The 161-page soft-covered book includes many definitions, and even has a section to help parents define their child care preferences. Once this important step is accomplished, parents can set their sights on finding the type of child care that best meets the needs of the family. Because it's difficult for any one parent to remember all the details about what to look for when visiting with potential child care providers or centers, Choosing Quality Child Care includes everything from telephone questions, to what to watch for during an on-site visit. Of special help throughout the book are "Smart Tips for Parents." These notes, in the margins throughout the text, include many helpful hints and other insights to help parents in their search. There are few searches as significant as this. Choosing Quality Child Care goes a long way in helping new parents sift through lots of information and lots of choices. It is a book that has value to new parents in communities throughout the United States.

Choosing Quality Child Care is a great resource for parents to learn how to go about getting good child care. I learned what child care options are available and how to pick the best one for my needs. I learned good questions to ask providers and what to look for when I visit a site. I also learned how to find out about the local licensing procedures in my area. This is a must for a first time parent. (A great shower gift too!) Even experienced parents will find this a great resource!!

Great first nonfiction book

Review Date: 2008-05-25
This fresh, exciting, and informative story would be a great choice for a child's or classroom's first nonfiction book. Illustrations are vivid and easy to relate to, and the text - complex enough for competent early readers, but perfect for a read-aloud - is engaging. City Hawk tells the true story of a pair of hawks who unexpectedly and uncharacteristically nest and rear their young outside the window of a Central Park apartment. One thing I really like about this is that the author does not anthropomorphize the birds and their plight, but lets the reader follow their story as if they were bird-watching along with the NYC regulars. A portion of the sales of this book go towards the Audubon Society's NYC chapter and helps "support protection of wild birds and habitat in the five boroughs."

The illustrations are charming and give an accurate picture of what life for a city hawk is really like. This book will appeal to both children and adults, especially those who live in New York and want to know more about their fellow resident, Pale Male.

I approached Clifford's First Autumn without any expectations of greatness. Boy was I wrong! This book's deep plotline, masterful writing and intruiging characters make it a true masterpiece. The simple symbolism of the many leaf colors represents man's struggle with multiculturalism, with the moral being that we should jump together into mankinds big leaf pile. This is a true classic of literature shows the spirit of America!
