ESV Bible, Classic Pocket New Testament Psalms and Proverbs Edition (TruTone, Black, No Design, Red Letter)

In recent years, the practice of producing handy New Testaments seems to have been on the decline. A number of Book Sellers opine that the cost is prohibitive and that since whole Bibles are so readily available in so many styles and formats at such a low cost, it isn't worth it to the publisher to set up for just a small, low-cost NT. Those who believe the Bible to be the Word of God and the instrument of our salvation have long found great use for a handy version of the NT as the greatest of aids in the proclamation, defense and discussion of God's Word.
The ESV version is an endearing (and may I predict, an enduring...) translation that makes plain what is most precious, without the compromises that so often beleagure modern translations. The binding, font and readily accessible features of this NT edition are an outstanding addition to a growing and helpful series of ESV editions that bring God's Eternal Word to a new century, whose need has never been greater.

I find this printing of the ESV to be very easy to read. The font is not bold, but still crisp and highly legible. The text printed on the other side of the page only faintly shows through the paper and doesn't interfere with reading. A sample of the text is available on the publisher's website.

We got this Bible to have the same translation as our children's bibles and so that we could read it after dinner without having to hunt up glasses for our 40 something eyes. We like this translation for family reading because it is readable and precise without resorting to crude or simplistic language like some translations for children do in their effort to be clear. We've ended up taking it to church too because it is so much easier than using reading glasses. Nice quality for regular use too.

This beautiful book is the best book on Tao I have ever come across. Mr. Willoughby has had experiences with many paths and is able to explain Tao in relation to those paths. He takes us to the Core teachings at the heart of these paths. The story of what led him to Taoism is interesting and informative. I have not found Taoism accessible to my Western mind until I found this treasure of a book. Reading this book is like taking a course in Tao but it opens your heart as well as enlightening your mind. This book is a rare gift Mr. Willoughby has given to the world. It cleared up much confusion about Reality and the Divine for me. It made me feel our connection to the Divine Source is possible, even inevitable. It is a book I will study for a lifetime. Deep and clear and beautiful.

I always run thru the book stores in serarch of interesting readings of the Tao. I ran across this one while looking thru the used and special priced books at Barnes and Noble (I mention them as they published it...).

I found the book to be most interesting. I like the work on the various aspects of Tao, the explanation of Yin and Yang, the Pa Qua, the I Ching, Tai Chi Chuan, Chi Gong and more.

Everyone will find something of interest for them regardless and those sections that don't may be of interest sometime in the future.

The writing is excellant and easy to understand. You can see the relationships with other self_help mantra's as you read the book and most important the relationship to the Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu.

Well worth the modest price new and more as a used book in excellant condition.

If you want hardcover you may have to go to barnes and noble but if softcover is ok then make sure you go Amazon (I ain't bein paid for this plug but I have purchased a few thousand dollars worth of books thru Amazon and have had nothing but pleasant experiences).

Each year, I purchase new Christmas books for our home collection, my now adult children and the children of friends. By far, the all time family favorite Christmas book is Leon Garfield's Fair is Fair. It is the one most frequently chosen for reading aloud on Christmas Eve. This year, I was delighted to find additional copies of the book which I had first purchased in 1986. Now each of children have their own copies in their own homes.

Fantastic!! Should be a children's classic.

I remember reading this book to my much younger brother, he absolutely loved it and would check it out of the library at every opportunity. It is truly a wonderful children's book, and I am amazed that it is out of print. If you get the opportunity to read it, do so! Your children will love it, and so will you.

A very magical spin on the true meaning of Christmas.

I can't believe this book is out-of-print! It has all the right ingredients for a really lovely Christmas story: orphans, a dog, and a wonderful ending. I had to make a decided effort to obtain this book, but my search was well-rewarded. However, my desire to purchase it as a special Christmas gift for three children who love Leon Garfield's other work will not be satisfied...'tis unluckily out-of-print! Very un-fair!

An interesting book, even for adults. Set in Russian-occupied Hungary, the novel depicts the repression of the citizenry under Communist rule and the hope of a people yearning for freedom. It is told from the viewpoint of a young teenage boy with whom American kids can identify. The skillfully drawn charaters touch the reader emotionally. A definite must buy for parents wanting to help their children, born in a post Berlin-wall era, understand how Communism can tighten its grip over a society.

The Fall of The Red Star is an incredibly captivating book that is applicable today to convey to children of all ages what people go through and the changes seen during a war. This book was read to my daughter's fourth grade class. They were amazed at what this normal kid went through, watching his 'normal' daily activities change from school, homework, parties, and chores into the horror of fighting and killing to protect his family and fighting for his country. It is a story all adolescents should read and a horror I wish no one should ever experience. Read this book. Then read it with your kids.

The Fast Red Road is the kind of novel that makes you want to write, and drive, and read more of Jones' work. The prose is clear and uninhibited, and never takes itself too seriously. A syllabus in Jones' class at Texas Tech is more entertaining than most books on the bestseller list; his fiction is remarkable.

This is probably the best novel I have ever read. Jones' style in this book is very much akin to Pynchon's in The Crying of Lot 49, except more sonically tasty. The plot jumps out at you in complex imagery that mirrors this linguistic free-for-all (I read this book with more than one dictionary at hand). It's very tough to get a hold of mentally, but, in the end, well worth it. Anyone interested in contemporary fiction does themselves a disservice by not reading this book.

What kind of secret does 'Fear' share? It shows you what fear really is and how it fits into your life!

A new addition to the 'Lady Grace' mysteries is FEUD by Grace Cavendish, the sixth book which provides a fine mystery surrounding Lady Grace's investigation into the art world at the Queen's Court when a famous painter arrives to paint the Queen's portrait. Poisons are being used in some of the paints - and a family feud is suspected. But who's the poisoner?

An enjoyable mystery from the Lady Grace series.

This is the sixth book in the Lady Grace Mysteries series, about Lady Grace Cavendish, a thirteen-year-old Maid of Honor at the court of Queen Elizabeth I.

It is March of 1570, and a new portrait of Queen Elizabeth I is being painted at court. Lady Sarah, one of Lady Grace's fellow Maids of Honor, is being a stand-in for some of the portrait work. As Grace must accompany her to the workroom, she is able to observe the artists working and learns how deadly and poisonous certain paints can be. Shortly after, Carmina, another of the Maids of Honor, becomes mysteriously ill. Grace wonders if she is being poisoned - but who would poison Carmina, and why? Grace is determined to get to the bottom of this mystery.

This was another excellent book in the Lady Grace series. It told an enjoyable story and included many interesting details about life in Elizabethan times. I'd definitely recommend this book to readers who enjoyed the other books in the series.

One of Grace's best!

Review Date: 2007-03-13
Lady Grace is maid-of-honor to her majesty Queen Elizabeth (the first) and also her personal detective. The books are in diary form and chock-full of historical details and interesting facts, but without this information getting in way of the story. Not only that, but they are fun, rollicking adventures of Grace acting quite improperly and loving it. The Queen (not always the most proper woman) turns a blind eye as long as she saves the day and not many people find out.

One of my favorite parts of the series is the characterization of Queen Elizabeth. She is every bit regal, but also possesses a fantastic and wicked sense of humour.

Feud is the sixth book in this alphabetical series. The Queen is having her portrait painted, but the Queen has more important things to do than stand around all day while people paint her picture. Lady Sarah, who looks somewhat like the Queen, is standing for most of the portrait, and Grace has to sit and read to her. Grace would much rather watch the painters and learn their craft. While watching the artists, Grace learns quite a few things-- especially that certain paints are poisonous.

At the same time, an acting troupe has shown up and Lady Carmina is falling mysteriously ill. Grace suspects, but can't prove, she's being poisoned. Paints are being stolen from the work room-- if Grace can find the thief, will she find the poisoner? Who would want to harm Carmina?

The problem with this book is that a feud Carmina's family is involved in is the turning point of the plot, but it's hidden in the background. The pointers leading the the feud would have been very subtle foreshadowing and would make an almost-twist (and exciting) ending. But, alas, the book is named feud, so we know it's going to be important. The most interesting thing about this book is not the feud or the information presented about feuds. The most interesting thing is the information about the painting and artistic techniques of the Elizabethan age. This story contains more false leads than the previous mysteries and is one of the best.

Wonderful volume on the FLANKER family of combat aircraft
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2006-05-14
In the world of aviation books, Midland Publishing can be considered a leading authority on a diverse range of civil and military aircraft. The Red Star book series, by noted aviation expert Yefim Gordon, deals entirely with Russian and Soviet aircraft. Red Star's Volume 2, entitled Flankers the New Generation, offers valuable insight into new production plans and upgrade programs for the potent and powerful Su-27 FLANKER aircraft family. This volume is an excellent addition to your collection.

Gordon breaks down the book into 4 main sections, an introductory section and a summary that nicely wraps up the reporting. The main sections cover the the development of the Su-27SM series of upgrades, the Su-27UB 2-seater trainer development and its subsequent modification into the Su-30MK 2-seat strike aircraft that has been exported to China, India, and Indonesia( with Malaysia on order), the Su-27IB FULLBACK variant development currently in low rate production with the Russian Air Force, and a section of Naval aviation use of FLANKER on the Kuznetzov. The bulk of Gordon's research has been received from the from Sukhoi and his own personal archive of information, and is as consistently good as his other Midland volumes. As expected with Gordon, each aircraft and its variants are properly illustrated with a wealth of color and black and white photographs perfect for enthusiasts and modelers.

Currently the Russian Air Force suffers from a funding gap that hinders the ability to procure new production FLANKER aircraft as well as offer sufficient funding for all the upgrade programs mentioned above. Coupled with the desire to begin design on the 5th Generation PAK-FA fighter(also designed by Sukhoi), resources will be extremely limited in the years to come. Gordon, utilizing his sources with the manufacturers and Russian government and military officials offers details as to which programs have the best chance to fully develop and which may fall by the wayside. Published in 2002, this book has become a bit dated so combining this with the new Red Star release by Gordon, Russian Military Aircraft in the 21st Century, would provide an updated perspective. Recommended.

Compiled and written by Yefim Gordon, Flankers: The New Generation (the second volume in the outstanding "Red Star" series) is a solid informational survey of military flanker aircraft, ranging from two-seat multi-role fighters, to tactical fighter-bombers, to shipboard fighters. Extensive historical and technical detail combined with excellent, full-color photography on almost every page makes Flankers: The New Generation a dazzling book and a "must-read" for anyone with a deep and avid interest in military aircraft and their history.

This excellent book focus on explaining the flanker variants, particularly Su-30 and later ones. It's one of the most up-to-date books on Su-27, with many interesting pictures (such as Flanker's cockpit display when it dropped bombs, production line pictures, different variant prototypes in flight... etc). It's a must have for readers interested in Russian military aviation.
