I couldn't stop reading the book. It was the best book I have read in years. Guys like Anthony Kiedis should always share their story. It is very inspiring to learn that somebody that didn't have very much now is rich and famous. I wish I had half of the fun Anthony had in his young life. I would recommend this book to everyone.

I couldn't get over how this guy did SO MANY drugs and is still alive! And in relatively good health it seems. He certainly is a master at taking narcotics. Most people would have OD'ed I think. I wouldn't know a song by the RHCP if I heard it, but being a reader of biographies, this one sounded juicy....sex, drugs and rock & roll most definitely. I got a bit tired of reading about drugs and more drugs and every time I thought he had it licked he went back. Like he says-insanity. It's got to be. Girlfriend after girlfriend, wow. His story continues. I would be curious if he's EVER yet found true love and how long his sobriety and drug free time is. I don't think he'll ever be totally free until he finds the True Higher Power, but there's still time. Well written, very interesting. Quite unbelievable but then a lot of musicians end up this way. I don't think they are good role models for our children. They are so nonconformist. I don't envy their lives at all. At least he didn't seem obsessed by having lots of money eventually.

This book is extremely important for Metis - those of mixed blood, who have to struggle for identity and self worth in a nation of freedom and denial of freedom. Unfortunately, Kirkus leads off with a judgmental and skeptical review. Kirkus needs to employ editors who have understanding and experience in the spiritual worlds! We need the support of generations of elders of integrity, dreams, visions, spirituality, our indigenous heritage, and knowledge of the violence, exploitation and greed which was also formed the foundation of the United States. My spirit soars with this book to the mountain tops, to the pine forests, to the circles of elders and people who walk the path of love and healing. We are here. Our teachers are here. Our ancestors are here. The animals and plants and stones are here. Sakanta Running Wolf, Th'e Chupe ke ya ka Pah, Walks in Freedom.

i am the gggggggg ( i believe thats right maybe one less g) granddaughter of william weatherford through his youngest son who survived to adulthood Alexander . last semester i wanted to do a paper about him in frontier history class and bought the book. at first i thought the author was a little corny with her always thinking Red Eagle was with her. when i dropped out of that college i was unable to complete the paper. this semester in one of my english classes we learned about sacred time and it opened up my mind to think differently. now i think the book is beautiful because it isnt just a book full of jumbled up facts but real feelings. when i was younger i was afraid of the native american blood in me--im also signifcantly Cherokee. this book helped me to be proud of my heritage. i give the author 5 stars !

I am a direct descendant of Red Eagle and his wife Mary Stiggins. Mary Ann Wells takes you on a quest and delivers the goods. The real man is revealed from a Native American viewpoint. The Red Eagle that my grandfather loved and told us of flooded back into my psychic (his hatred for Andrew Jackson as well). I felt as though I was actually seeing those tragic days through the eyes of my illustrious ancestor. Ms.Wells has cleverly turned our hearts toward each other!

This is history told from a fresh perspective.

I highly recommend Mary Ann Wells' book "Searching for Red Eagle." This is history written in a fresh, creative way, told from the viewpoint of the Native Americans. Whether you are a history enthusiast, interested in the history and culture of the American Indians of the southeastern United States, or simply enjoy a good book, this biography is fascinating reading.

This is a great reading for school age kids, who like mysteries, and it can also help those who do not feel welcome at a new school. I think Joan Aiken is a wonderful writer, and I wish there was a sequel, so I can read more about Cosmo and his friends.

Cosmo applies to each person. We all have "Shadow Guests" and his illusions are like corners of mind. Aiken has written a lovely break from the Wolves series and written something very powerful. Death and love are the two components that appear to battle endlessly in Cosmo's mind, and that of his predecessors. Everybody should read this.

The book shows great realistic deatail.

I really liked this book because it is a realistic story about Cosmo and his deceased mother and older brother. this book somewhat relates to my life and my grandfather because I feel that he is watching over me at all times and makes sure I get through life easily. That is what I think happens in this book and that is why I liked it so much, also it is a very realistic story so I think that is what I think makes this book a graet one.

No curse on this

Probably the best reprints by Starscape books are the little-known Joan Aiken fantasies. Her "Dido" series is easily found, but only recently books like "Cockatrice Boys" and "Whispering Mountain" have been made available. "Shadow Guests" is the latest of these -- it isn't quite as good as the others, but still quite enjoyable.

After his mother and older brother mysteriously vanish, Cosmo Curtoys is sent to live with an eccentric mathematician relative in England. While Aunt Eunice is pleasant (though odd), Cosmo rapidly makes enemies of almost every other kid in school. What's more, strange things have begun lurking nearby, including a tadpole-like thing that fell off of his sleeve -- and grew.

Soon Cosmo finds out about something linked to the disappearance of his mom and brother -- a family curse that dooms every eldest brother to die in battle, and every mother to die of grief. Because of this curse, he is visited by "shadow guests," a Roman gladiatior, a naive Crusader... and a sinister force that threatens to kill him.

It's definitely above the average ghost story, and makes good use of Cosmo's social isolation to let him encounter ancestors who are also burdened by the curse. Cosmo is a likeable hero, who alternates between not understanding what's happening, and knowing all too well what is going on. Cousin Eunice is a nice (mathematician) twist on the usual weird relative; the kids at school often seem like their friendliness or hostility has some bearing on the story, but ultimately that peters out.

Aiken's writing is pleasant, although the pacing is a bit odd -- one minute we're reading about kids snubbing him at school or playing jokes on Bun, then we're reading about ghosts and ancient warlocks and family curses. Moreover, some of the details in the book must have passed me by, because I didn't quite understand a few parts of the ending. But the haunting (pun intended) atmosphere and mix of the unearthly and the solidly, likeably British is very fresh-feeling.

While this book isn't quite as stellar as "Cockatrice" or "Mountain," it's a solid ghost story with a pleasant storyline and hero. Well worth the read.

Super Edition? I don't think so - but still tons of fun!

"Shadow on the Sand," is a fun adventure overall. There are some exciting fight sequences and your adventure will take you from horseback, to ships, to flying in the air. This book should not be missed if you are a fan of Lone Wolf.

My only complaint about this book is the advertised "Super Edition: Including Two Adventures" on the cover of the book. There are "two adventures" in this book, but they are both considerably short. I remember getting to the end of the first adventure and thinking, "that's it? That's the end of the first adventure? How disappointing, I barely did anything." Up until now, every Lone Wolf book has had 350 numbered sections. This book has 400, and each adventure has 200 numbered sections. Therefore, each adventure is 150 numbered sections shorter than all the other adventures. It is noticeable, too, because each adventure is short and there is not a lot of freedom and choices to make.

While this book may be a "Super Edition," I think that had this been a "Super Edition: One 400 sections adventure!" would've been much better. This book still is fun, and necessary to read to finish off the first series. After this book is the Magnakai series, which is unbelievably fun!

Finally, Joe Dever has authorized the free distribution and licensing of his Lone Wolf series which are available online. This resource has the unabridged editions which makes it great. I will not give out the URL as part of the reviewers agreement but with a little searching you should be able to find it. However, I still prefer to read the paperback versions instead of an online version.

The Kai finale-and a few twists to boot! Great plot!

The Shadow sees RED

Review Date: 2007-02-02
The third book in the series of new reprints of the classic pulp novels of the 1930's focuses on two criminal masterminds who use red in their evil schemes. This is a 5-star book. I rated it incorrectly by accident.

The Reb Blot, the first story in this book presents the Shadow, and Detecive Joe Cardona, with a mystery where crimes occur and only a mysterious red blot on a piece of paper is left in the aftermath. Criminals get into and out of locations that are fully surrounded by police, embarrassing the police detective and puzzling even the Shadow. How are they able to repeatedly escape directly under the nose of the law? Only the Shadow knows and can stop the schemes of the criminal the papers are calling the Red Blot.

The second story is my favorite Shadow story I have ever seen, in any form, comics, radio, novels or anything in between. Our heretofore undauntable hero meets a voodoo cult that not only manages to halt the Shadow's plan, but actually injure and take the Shadow out of the picture. The following day, the Shadow awakens to hear his physician being kidnapped by the Voodoo Master's thugs. Wounded and weak, what can even the Shadow do against the criminal who can create zombies from living men?

Review Date: 1999-12-01
This book offers the reader some of the best longer poems written by the generation of poets born in the mid-sixties--"City of Jazz and Punk" the long poem which ends this marvelous and urban collection of powerful narratives and portraits, is a "collaged" series of lyrical notations that weave an ode to New York that echoes Monk, Hart Crane, and Galway Kinnell, as skateboarders circumscribe graffiti and lovers walk holding hands in the rain. If you know what the Brooklyn Bridge looks like an night, if you are searching for words stitched out of youth and the optimistic melancholy of all its hopes, then this work will leave bruises on your heart, etch metaphors into your brain. Every New Yorker should read this book. I bought some with me and left them on the F train for strangers to find. You should keep one, then buy others and do the same.

This story is compelling from the moment you begin to read. The successes achieved while enduring so much hardship is a testament to the passion Miller has for the sport. This story is a true eye-opener, and reveals a lot about how our society has evolved, but also illustrates how much farther we still need to go.

This is a genuinely human story of triumph through adversity, and is inspirational whether you're a motorsport fan or not.

Leonard Miller's story is one of tremendous courage and perseverance in the face of prejudice that will inspire anyone who reads it. It was amazing to me how much prejudice still exists in what is now a mainstream sport and disappointing that no large corporation has had the vision to support someone who is one of the truly inspirational African American role models of our time.

Mr. Leonard Miller is a true vanguard in motorsports! This colorful page-turning account of his life as an African-American in the sometimes brutal world of racing is truly inspirational and eye-opening. From his childhood, Mr. Miller channeled his love and passion for cars and racing into a lifelong pursuit of being the best in motorsports and overcoming near impossible odds to field top racing teams. His struggle to triumph over racism, death and various other issues during the course of five (5) decades is expressed in clear detail.

This book is a timely read given the current attention to diversity in NASCAR and other racing formulas. Most of the current crop of active NASCAR African American drivers were trained and had their best results and greatest successes under Mr. Miller's racing teams, which in itself is a testimony to both his spirit, commitment and racing acumen.

I highly recommend this book as a real life success story of a great man that has climbed an extraordinary mountain that few have dared to try. It is good to know that he is still climbing with as much vigor now as when he first started.

As a Brit with an interest in motor racing, particularly racing history, I bought this book over here on a friend's recommendation. I didn't know what to expect but I was pleasantly surprised by this memoir.

From Miller's humble beginnings through to his ownership of a NASCAR team today, the story is an enticing account of triumph in adversity and should bring shame on many of the racing sponsors who still ignore the achievements of African-Americans today.

One of the best toddler books ever! I am a die-hard Audrey Wood fan. She writes fantastic prose that is witty, rhythmic and perfect for her audience. I know this one by heart. My kids (4 and 8 now) have acted this one out for ages. We sing-song it together even now. My son will join in with my daughter and put their heads on the floor and try to "walk upsidedown", like Sally and her pals. I get her books for all my friends who are new moms! My 2 1/2 year old son is crazy about this book! I never write reviews, but this book is so amazing that I had to say something! We read it over and over, it gets him up to bed eagerly instead of my having to chase him around the house. That in itself is worth it! It is also enjoyable for adults, I have not gotten tired of it either. A couple of sentences a page, great pictures and really fun. Perfect for a 2-3 year old who wants a story, but not too many words on each page. Also perfect for boys who like being "upsidedown". My son has at least 100 books, and this is in his top 3, he wants to read it every night.

Silly Sally went to town walking backwards upside down.

She meets some silly animals on the way and they join her as she dances, leaps, sings and fals asleep on her way into town. Neddy Buttercup wakes them all up and they complete their silly journey.

Very Addictive! You'll be saying the lines to yourself all day!

The pictures are funny and appealing. I recently bought the lap-sized board book for my other granddaughter that is 3 1/2 yrs old & Silly Sally is a hit with her also! This gentle book begins, "You hug your mama, and your mama hugs you." From there, the text asks how each of several animals hugs - from a bunny to a gorilla and even a bat. The question is answered for a different animal on each double-page spread using words and pictures. Both the text and the illustrations evoke a variety of senses and encourage the parent and child to hug along. A cozy book to share with a child.
