What child wouldn't love to have this book? It is a delight. The illustrations are wonderful. Although the book is recommended for ages 6 to 10, younger children will be enchanted with the pictures and story. It can be a wonderful tool for teaching shapes and colors. A great addition to every library.

I bought this wonderful book for my five-year-old granddaughters and after reading it, wished I had bought one for myself as well! They were completely enthralled with the fine art illustrations and story of the Metro Park Zoo animals working together to jazz up their appearance to save their zoo from closing. The rhythmic cadence makes it a delight for both reader and listener. The story sends an important message of what imaginative thinking and teamwork by little critters can accomplish. The children not only loved the story, but also savored each of the beautiful and enticing illustrations. This book is a must have for your child's library.

Zoolidays features absolutely amazing watercolors and imaginative illustrations. You are treated to a whole zoo full of incredible, artful creatures. The characters paint themselves full of intricate designs. This book gives children a whole new visual language--one where they learn about pattern and color, shape and design. It is stunning, and I highly recommend it! For young child artists, this is a must have book. One that will inspire them to make their own creative works of art.

I borrowed my husbands copy of this book, not expecting to enjoy it (I'm not much into Baseball), but I was CAPTIVATED!! Baseball aside this is a human story, one the author approachs with the softness and sensativity of young William's mother....I cried and then was enthralled with the ultimate victory...against all odds... of the 1940 Reds. This should be part of Oprah's book club. I just wish the cover had the author's picture on it.....I just wonder if he has kind eyes.

This book was both an exciting read and an informative picture of pre-war Americana. From the Deacon to the Duke I just couldn't put it down. By the time the story reaches its inevitable climax....the 1940 World Series...you not only feel like you are there, but as if you are part of the team. Lets Go Reds! I can't wait for the next tome from this great new writer.

Excellent book...well researched

If you are a baseball fan, you know the stories of the big-named players from the 1940s. This is the story of a team of not-so-famous players who pulled off a World Series Championship. in 1940. If you enjoy baseball history, you will enjoy this book. You get know the stories behind a group of rather ordinary guys -- a great snapshot of life in the US just before World War II,

CROCODILES & MOON MACHINES ---- FATHER & SON FANTASIES

.

If your name was Abel Grable and your wife's name was Mabel you too would have to get away every now and then.

"Abel's Moon" is set sometime in the 1950's going by the clothes the characters wear. Abel has to leave his family and travel to find work. They are not a prosperous family, the front gate squeaks and the garden is overgrown. There is no TV or video games in this house. Instead they sit around the fire and tell stories. Somehow they look happy!

There are 3 children Adam, Noah and baby Ben, and of course Skipper the dog. The boys know how to entertain themselves, such as playing at being wild animals. Mabel and Ben love dancing to the music on the radio. When Abel is back home he tries to write up the stories of his travels but the noise from the family is too much. He has to go out into the garden to get some peace and quiet in order to work.

Abel's stories about his adventures are full of tales about monkey's swinging through trees, crocodiles in muddy swamps and travelling on riverboats to remote places.

Once again it was time for Abel to set out to find work. The boys missed their Dad very much.

The boys turn the old writing table that Dad had used out in the garden into a camp. They are sure they can hear monkeys in the trees. They then turn the table upside down to make a pretend boat. They paddled it through muddy crocodile infested swamps with only the moon to guide them.

Adam one day decided that the writing table could be turned into a moon machine with the addition of few planks of wood to make some propellers. Under the light of the full moon Adam looked out at the moon machine in his garden.

Adam had a remarkable and profound thought. " He knew that the moon was shining down on him, and Abel too. It shone down on all the people who loved each other and couldn't always be together, beaming down on each and every one, no matter how far away they were".

With his strong sense of imagination Adam planned that one night soon, he and Noah (and Skipper if he behaved himself) would take off in the moon machine, and drop in on Dad, wherever he was.

Soon Abel would be back home with his family. The boys would then tell Abel all about THEIR adventures.

You get the message that Abel's sons have just as strong sense of imagination as their father does. You guess his crocodile stories may be just as real as Adam's trips in his moon machine.

"Abel's Moon" is a delightful story. The illustrations capture the era and the atmosphere perfectly.

Adam and Noah miss their dad, Abel, when he travels on business. He writes down his travel stories for the family to read while he is away on his next trip. Adam feels connected to his dad when he sees the moon shine because it also shines on his father. Adam and Noah make a moon machine in the back yard and pretend they will fly to their dad and visit him. They plan to share their adventures with Dad on his return. The illustrations depict loving family scenes.

This is a wonderful story about a man who returns home to his family after traveling, guided by the moon. The story is creative, and touching, as the children feel closer to their father when they can look up and see the moon. The educational superb too, since it is a good introduction to what the moon is and why it looks the way it does in the sky.

A delightful story with wonderful illustrations which I would happily recommend to all parents.

Children can follow the story easily and recognise the situations as the baby bear shouts for more each time Grandbear plays with him by crying 'AGAIN! AGAIN!'.

Parents can sympathise with Grandbear who is obviously growing weary of the baby's demands but by the end of this short story it is he that wants more in a pleasant twist that all parents and grandparents will recognise.

A wonderful gift for a grandparent to give to their grandchild but it would also work in reverse as a gift for grandparents from the grandchild.

I hope you but this and enjoy it as much as my son and I have.

There as been a wealth of excellent children's poetry published over the fifteen years since ALL JOIN IN first appeared. And yet, such pieces here as "Sorting out the kitchen pans" remain totally unique, fresh, and hysterically funny. I read this aloud hundreds of times during circle time and still am not tired of it.

What can I say? I was captivated. The book's pace is very appropriate as well. Not too slow and not too fast. People often forget too fast can be a problem as well. I fell in love with the chef Marcus Bazemore. It made me wish he was real.

The other thing that impressed me about the book was the intimate scenes. It was very tastefully done. Too many books today step over the line. While A.C. was graphic where he needed to be, it didn't smother the story.

The story line was clever. A woman hooks up with a chef to help him build his restaurant traffic, with recipes in several chapters. Simply delicious.

I can't wait for another book by A.C. Moore.

A very unique story with characters you will enjoy

Always Room for Dessert is a great read. the story takes place in Washington, DC where Marcus Bazemore opens a restaurant and learns the hard way that just because you're a chef, it doesn't mean you know how to get people to come and eat at your establishment.

When Marcus meets Justine Coleman, a budding entrepreneur who has a specialty in marketing, the two team up to increase the success of the restaurant and take an interest in each other.
Their interest is only the beginning as Justine begins to experience success in a way that has her changing her values and making deals with some very dangerous people.

I loved the way that A.C. Moore alternates between Justine's and Marcus' point of view. The reader gets a chance to see how men and women can have two entirely different perspectives centered around one situation.

Throughout the book, I found everything from steamy love scenes, comedy and even thrilling drama. The recipes and dishes that Marcus prepares for Justine were also a nice added touch. I think that A.C. Moore was clever to include the recipes at the end of the chapters.

I gave this book a five star rating, because Always Room for Dessert goes well beyond the typical dime a dozen romance novel formula that's cluttering the shelves. I think we have a real author here!

This book is wonderful to use in the classroom with a variety of ages and academic levels! The exciting and FUN use of words and word rhythm is very helpful when teaching writing lessons. Reading this story is also a wonderful introductory activity for discussions on our society, our dreams and wishes for the future, and how to "fix" the problems we might see in the world! Superb example of children's literature!

Review Date: 1998-12-05
This engaging, magical book presents the story of an ambitious doughnut maker. Frustrated and bored, he decides to whip up a world. He begins by carefully studying everything from androids to sunshine, and then concocts a batter that includes ketchup, old socks, and other quirky ingredients. The baker struggles with many different variations of batter, and he stirs and cooks in countless creative, silly ways . . . until a final product emerges that will surprise and charm every reader.

"The Ambitious Baker's Batter" is suitable for children and adults of all ages. Like the best children's books, it is sophisticated enough to succeed on many different levels. The illustrations are detailed, imaginative, and entertaining. Most pages feature both primary and background art. Children (and their parents, too!) will enjoy discovering hidden treasures in these background drawings. Also, the book's illustrations are so evocative that children who can't yet read will be able to follow the story independently.

"The Ambitious Baker's Batter" is an ideal gift for the holidays, a time when children are fascinated by the mysteries and magic of baking.

As its name implies, this book presents the concept of angels in a most understandable light for the much younger set. It brings to mind Psalm 91:11 - "For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." Has wonderful content for 101 spirituality.

There are two editorial reviews here that summarize the book quite well. I would like to concurr with another Amazon reviewer that states this would be a good book to read to students prior to any discussion in detail of " The Diary of Anne Frank." The art work is like the story itself; a stark portrait of one of the darkest time periods in man's history. It is a somber subject and should be treated as such I suppose; there is only one smiling group family portrait in the book. I would read this book to fifth graders and above only because of the subject matter and the questions and answers that will arise might be difficult for some youngsters to understand. This is a good picture-book biography for a parent or teacher to use if they feel the audience is mature enough to handle hard questions and answers. This book would make a worthy addition to the school library or community synagogue so that young people may better understand the injustices of the past and how they relate to contemporary times.

The retelling is stark, compassionate, unsentimental. The art is reminiscent of ROSE BLANCHE, in grays and browns. This would be a good readaloud intro in any classroom before launching into reading the diary, no matter the students' age. An end page lists the chronology of events, has contact info for Ann Frank House in Amsterdam. This is really for all ages.
