The book is excellent for young children who have taken an interest in cars. The book is fragile though, and should be used with a parent present.

My boys loved the little red toolbox--My Little Yellow Taxi did not disappoint! The pieces are pretty stiff initially, but are so much fun for them to play pretend with. Like the toolbox, the book is cardboard, so it does wear. But that does not deter them from filling the taxi up with gas, or using the key to start the engine. A great book for car trips!

My 4 year old loves, loves this book. I also got it for a playmate who is 4 years old, and reported back he also loves this book. It is SUCH fun it is hard for the children to be gentle with it, and it is only cardboard. My kudos for making "just a book" so strong, but even so, it can handle only so much abuse. I do have to put it away when younger children come over, because it has suffered mishaps and I've had to repair it. I would definately wait until your child can "care" properly for a book before getting this one.

Naruto
This story Naruto, is about these 12 years old kids who want to become ninjas.
The kids lived in Konaha, their village which is hidden in the leaf. I picked to write about the character, Hinata, because she is very shy and very, very nervous. I felt like the character in the book. I felt like I was at Konaha's battle arena fighting people from other teams. Then I will watch my teammates compete. The theme of the book is about working hard, staying focused, and teamwork. I think this because the characters were on task and working hard while helping each other out and making them feel confident while fighting other people.
I think anyone who loves Japanese anima (Animation) should read this book.
It tells about the characters and what they are doing in the book and it tells who wins the battle and who doesn't win the battle.

Volume 9 was really great with a lot of action in it, but i would also say it was sad with the many deaths some of the young ninjas faced but at least they died with a good cause.( lets hope) Anyway i thought my favorite character in this series is well Sasuke. Stunningly powerful, this tragedy and triumph of a non-practicing Jewish family portrays a happy and privileged family life dedicated to medicine and intellectual pursuits. All that changed in late May of 1941, when first German motorcycle with machine guns arrived practically in front of their home. Forced to run and hide, first from Germans and soon from Ustashe, Julius family with two sons barely survives attacks and joins resistance.
The parents, father a doctor and mother a nurse, worked day and night to save wounded communist partisans. Their youngest son Stevo, the author, at age 14 is appointed a military courier, given an outdated gun, and sent to roam alone through mountains, forests, and small rural villages of Croatia. Their older son, 18-year-old bravely defends the territory of Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Severely wounded, caught by Germans, he talks his way out with fluent German.
"Neither Red Nor Dead" is an inside story, full of details and naming names among 481 pages, explaining why communism failed in Croatia and former Yugoslavia (now referred to as f-Y).
After the WWII, in 1953, the Julius family suffers a fatal blow, when dirty communist politics in Zagreb pins the father, a hard working and totally dedicated head of a hospital, against the wall with false accusations. Meddling into hospital administration in a typical communist style, Dr. Julius sees no way out and commits suicide.
The elder son dedicates his life to the communist ideals, but when he critizes Slobodan Milosevic (now a war criminal), he is considered a persona non grata in the country he loved so much. He dies from cancer.
The author, Stevo Julius, educated in Croatia is now internationally recognized as one of the leading scientists in the field of hypertension.

As a reader with only a vague awareness, understanding, or even interest in Yugoslavia and the history of the south Slavs, Julius' book not only opened my eyes to that part of the world but also enhanced my strong feelings of empathy for persons ensnared in the horrors and anomalies of war. His reminiscences of how he handled his ordeal are lively, pointed, and get to the heart of how people react in times of great upheaval. In spite of the serious character of this autobiography, the author was able to see the humorous side of the human condition. Maps and a brief history primer help explain the geography and the times. Not only for history buffs, this book gives all readers a better perception of events in a part of the world that has moved from relative obscurity to major importance in present times.

Have you ever wondered what motivates those who make great contributions to society? Neither Red Nor Dead is the mesmerizing autobiographical account of a young teen-ager caught up in the horror of the Nazi invasion of Yugoslavia during World War II. Blessed with intelligence, incredible insight, perhaps an overabundance of courage and much luck, the author describes in great detail the activities of Yugoslavian partisans and a young boy, largely separated from his family during this horrible time. After the end of World War II the author and his family attempted to reconstruct some semblance of a normal life during the equally terrifying Communist takeover. We follow the trauma of life during the author's education in University and Medical School with amazement, laughter and sadness. It is difficult to put this captivating and fast-moving account down. What makes the epic so much more incredible is the recognition that despite the difficulties and personal loss sustained during this period, the author developed a keen sense of humor and used his brilliance and insight to make many major contributions to the benefit of mankind. This is the personal story of one of the great hypertension (high blood pressure) researchers of our age to whom hundreds, even thousands of people are indebted for his services as a physician, teacher, researcher and friend.

Reading this book has added greatly to my understanding of a significant set of social and political events in the Balkans. It is more important, though, in providing insight into the ways in which individuals cope and grow through being part of those events.

Prof. Julius is a wonderful scientist and clinician. This book addresses issues well beyond medicine and science.

For the American, Prof Julius' book provides a the history of the Balkan peoples and describes the maelstrom there during and after World War II. Often our histories overlook this region. Through his eyes, the very unique state of post-WWII Yugoslavia becomes plausible. Secondarily, more recent events in the area are more understandable.

However, it is the experience seen through the lives of his father, mother, and brother that capture the imagination in a unique manner. The struggle of the individual within large social and political movements is captivating. Late at night, when I wake from sleep, I often wonder about one or more of young Stevo's experiences described in the book. It is a life well-lived and aspects of his life will always remain with me.

Alas Yugoslavia!

Neither Red nor Dead, an autobiographical memoir by Dr. Stevo Julius (Medvista, Ann Arbor, MI, www.medvistaa.com, Amazon.com, barnesandnoble.com) is a great read! The author, who is an internationally known researcher in the field of hypertension, is now the Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor of Hypertension at the University of Michigan. He describes his childhood growing up in a Yugoslavia that was occupied by the Nazis during World War II. He is separated from his family, becomes involved in the Partisan resistance, and then suffers excruciating hardship under the post-war Communist regime. Despite such difficulties, he survives and even thrives under these career-threatening circumstances.

His story is told in fine detail but with great charm, humor, and optimism. The descriptions of the Yugoslavian countryside, people, cities and politics are extremely informative and well written. The text maintained my intense interest throughout the 481 pages. Accompanying the text are maps showing specific areas of the country where the action takes place. One small concern here is that many of the towns are not depicted on the maps and so the most intricate details of his travels cannot be carefully examined.

While most of the account takes place in Yugoslavia, only the Epilogue deals with the authorĂ½s leaving the country for Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan. Unlike the rest of the book, the facts leading up to this emigration are less detailed. The last chapter, The South Slavs, is an historical primer, which describes the background of the establishment of the Yugoslavian country after World War I. The author clearly displays the reasons for the internal strife, which has so damaged this territory in the past decade. I might suggest that the interested reader read this chapter first to better prepare for the unfolding of this fascinating memoir.

Dr. Julius maintains his wonderful humor, humility and sense of family and country throughout the book. There are many interesting literary details (stories and poems) included in the text. Most importantly, the writing is not at all medically oriented, so that readers of any background can enjoy the book. After reading it, besides offering it to my friends, I found that I would very much like to meet the author and shake his hand...

A body falls from the sky in the dry New Mexico wilds. Two native American ranchers sight the mysterious image and set off to find it. Nearby to the body impaled in the limbs of a tree, they find a suitcase full of money.

This could be their lucky break, or their worst nightmare. They decide to risk keeping the money -- and to face the inevitable consequences . . .

The native American insights are a delight to read. Louis Owens's beautifully crafted prose leaves a last impression.

Owens' third American Indian crime thriller has received praise from Kirkus, Publisher's Weekly, Booklist and others. The consequences of trying to keep found money (in this case, $850,000 dropped from a drug dealer's plane in remote New Mexico) take ranchers Will Striker and Billy Keene on a wild ride. Enter sex and magical realism, stir, and find yourself reading a "well-wrought thriller capped by a twist-filled climax."

Louis Owens has crafted an engrossing story that mixes a not unfamiliar crime thriller with the supernatural world of two half-Cherokee friends, Billy Keene and Will Striker, and Billy's elderly grandfather. When Billy and Will watch a body and suitcase full of cash fall from the sky while out hunting, their entire world changes immediately. After a brief debate, they decide to leave the body where it impaled itself on a pine tree and take off with the $850,000 dollars in cash; but, before they even get out of the forest, they are attacked by a helicopter.

Yes, the beginning seems familiar and the storyline done before; but, the direction this book takes departs from your standard boilerplate crime thriller. Between romance with beautiful strangers and the grandfather involving the spirit world in protecting Billy and Will, this book is a fun romp from beginning to end. And, don't expect a pat ending, as the climax of this story has a twisting and turning path to the last word.

from the very first paragraph. Owens's brand of wit and humor blend with his examination of the ranching life in the New Mexico desert to create a highly-charged, complex murder mystery. Set in Indian country, Nightland stakes a strong multicultural claim to the art form of the American Murder Mystery, but it stakes a claim also on the magical realism of American Indian and South American literature. The resulting blend of ghosts and grim realism give the story a dark, mystical, enspirited patina. The pig and dog are hilarious counterpoint to the Cherokee mixedblood heroes. Round out the story with amiable ghosts, a seductive shape-shifter, and some nasty bad guys and you have a bona fide page-turner.

Billy Keene and Will Striker, the main characters of Louis Owens' novel Nightland, are half-breed Cherokees living on failing ranches in New Mexico that their grandparents bought from the Mexican-Americans whose family had a grant from Spain [who took the land from Native Americans in the first place]. They're out hunting deer when a man [who we find out is of Pueblo Indian blood] falls from the sky and ends up skewered on a juniper tree. A suitcase full of money falls with him. Despite misgivings, Billy and Will keep the money. Then all hell breaks loose. Nightland is at heart a thriller, but as with Owens' other novels, it is also a musing on identity. Native American spirituality and the supernatural play a key role in the novel, so if suspension of disbelief is a problem for the potential reader, don't start this book. This is a much faster read than Bone Game and The Sharpest Sight. I found Nightland to be one of the highlights of my summer reading. Oh, and as if my opinion actually counted, I think Richard Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino should buy the rights to Nightland and make a movie. One of the pieces of sad news from this summer was that Louis Owens had taken his own life. He left us five great novels, including Nightland.

I did try the eggless omelet and it didn't turn out so good, but I also tried the grilled cheese and it was out of this world. The grilled cheese alone makes this worthy of 5 stars, i plan on using the velvety cheese sauce in my next casserole I can't wait to try it. Being vegan is so much fun.

I love the taste of nutritional yeast so I was excited to get this cookbook. Its written by Red Star, the makers of one brand one nutritional yeast, so be prepared to see their name plastered throughout the book. The recipes in here are vegan - even in recipes like the mushroom soup where tofu sour cream is used. Its really good too. There are recipes for sauces (including cheez sauces), aioli, "pate", pesto, soups, salads, sandwiches, and pasta dishes. The popcorn recipe with the yeast flakes is a real hit in our house too. Excellent book to help get a lot more use out of the yeast flakes.

Nutritional yeast is one of those few miraculous foods that all vegetarians/vegans have to be thankful for. First, nutritional yeast is grown off of blackstrap molasses. It is jam packed with fiber, protein, and tons of B vitamins, especially the highly debated B12. This cookbook makes it very easy for you to incoporate more nutritional yeast into your eating lifestyle. Be careful, Brewer's yeast is NOT nutritional yeast. This cookbook features recipes that are not suitable for substitution.

I loved Painting the Walls Red. It's a book that most women over 40 will enjoy and relate to. It's not ponderous reading like some self-help books. Painting the Walls Red addresses a lot of serious situations that older women face. Yet it's done in a way that doesn't feel uncomfortable or tedious. The book feels safe, like an old friend. I love the women's stories. And I love the way Judy Ford has introduced some "fun" things along with the more serious ones. Women over 40 often forget how to play and do the joyful things we did when we were little girls. We take ourselves far too seriously most of the time. Painting the Walls Red is a reminder that we can be serious as well as silly. That we can cry as well as laugh. That our age isn't what dictates WHO we are. It's our attitude and how we choose to look at life. I definitely want to paint one of my walls red!

Aging is a conundrum of sorts. As we grow older we get wiser. We gain perspective. We lose a great deal of those immobilizing, everybody-is-looking-at-me insecurities that come along with youth. For the first time it seems that our hard edges soften. We don't take life so seriously. There is something liberating about aging. It feels relaxing somehow. At the same time, however, aging feels overwhelming. We experience health issues that we thought belonged only to our grandparents. We face retirement and wonder how we will survive on a fixed income. We lose those precious attributes (perky breasts, smooth skin, naturally non-grey hair) that our youth-obsessed culture seems to value over anything else. Sometimes I feel that with each year I age, I become more invisible. I am losing my innocence, I am losing my beauty, I am losing my voice in society.

This is where Painting The Walls Red steps in so beautifully and brilliantly. Judy Ford writes with an optimism that is nearly impossible to find these days. It is fine by me that the book does not offer any medical information about aging as there is an abundance of that available to anybody who does a little research. What we are missing, what we desperately need as we grow older, is tenderness and compassion which is exactly what this book offers. It is full of stories about women over forty who have all approached aging in unconventional ways. These stories are utterly inspiring. The women Judy Ford writes about remain excited, inspired, amazed and fresh even as they mature. Painting The Walls Red is not a book for women who are stuck believing the myths we are told about aging. It is a book for women who believe in the power of creativity, who work to keep their hearts open, and who want to live in awe. I guess it is obvious that I have been deeply touched by Judy Ford's work. I highly recommend this book.

It's lovely to see this book is back in print. I received a copy as a birthday gift when I was 5 years old (it was a new publication then!) and continue to treasure that same volume today. I also received a real pair of clogs from Japan about the same time, so the story took on even more meaning for me. I have an opportunity to teach a workshop in Japan in May about how our experiences are reflected in our artworks -- and this beautifully illustrated story which taught me so much about integrity, as well as Japanese culture, will be an important reference in my presentation. Simple lessons, so important to a child's character, kindly taught, DO last a lifetime! This is an important book for your child's library.

I wept in recognition of the poignant, exquisite illustrations of this young girl's life in Japan which so delighted me as a very young child. I read it now to my two year-old son, who asks questions about "the weather-telling game" that cracked Mako's clogs. The story is character forming, but it's the illustrations that last a lifetime in memory.

I found the notes to the poems particularly valuable - thanks to them, the collection becomes a window into Chinese history and society.
I really miss an index by author, and, as usual, I am ill-at-ease with Red Pine's system of transliteration. It may seem superior to pinyin to the author, but it makes really hard to connect the places and people mentioned in this book to what one already knows to about Chinese history. It may be another case of the inferior system becoming the standard, but pinyin is the standard at this point, and fighting it is a bit quixotic at this point.
These are the things one notices when a book is good enough to read and spend time with, so do not let this put this off. In fact, I can't wait for more Red Pine translations.

Those who have never read Red Pine's translations are in for a treat. Those who have read them will continue to enjoy the feast.

Beautiful graphically, the book and the poetry SING! Red Pine has a wonderful gift in transmitting wisdom and spirit with words that transport one to a higher plane of existence, even if only temporarily. Even when the reader returns, the impact still remains and the awareness of the depth of quality one's life can have, is not soon forgotten.

I checked it out of the library 3x - & bought my own copy

Previous reviewers have already summarized the more obvious qualities of this book; I agree with their comments. I found that for the student of Chinese culture, Chinese education, or Chinese thought, the book is a stunning introduction to a way of expressing observations and meaning in compact forms. In particular, the poetry seems both denser and more graceful than similar forms in English poetry, and more complex than the haiku forms descended from it. Chinese speakers I know vouched for the sensitive transliteration.

Basho advised a haiku student to "read Chinese poetry" to write better haiku. I came to this work after struggling with haiku for a long time. I found Basho's advice to be good and this book to be a remarkable way to begin. The historical text snippets offered with the poems make further reflection easy without attempting to "define" all that the poem means.

A splendid translation and collection of poems

Red Pine (Bill Porter) has beautifully translated this important collection of Chinese verse. His commentaries, too, are well worth reading.

This book would be an excellent text for those who wish to learn to read T'ang and Sung poetry, and classical literary Chinese in general. The Chinese and English poems are presented on facing pages. Each poem is sufficiently brief to allow students the opportunity to (begin to) learn a complete work of literature without the intimidation that can accompany larger texts -- and there are 224 such poems in this translation, which gives ample scope for learning in nice, easy steps. (Of course this will have to be done using a dictionary like Mathews', and the student will need some familiarity with looking characters up by radical -- this is not a teaching text with a glossary and explanatory notes about language usage.)

Even if one does not desire to use this collection to learn Chinese, the English translations are certainly beautiful poems in their own right, and are worth spending time with. And meanwhile, the Chinese texts are always there, extending a gentle invitation to the curious.

Surely every lover of Chinese (and English!) poetry will treasure this book.

Another gift from Red Pine (Bill Porter) whose love for Chinese verse and the Dharma have shaped him into one of the foremost translators of the old poets. This Chinese classic has been around for eight centuries, but is here finally available in English! The volume offers 123 poets, 224 poems. Adjacent Chinese text and critical notes are provided for each poem. Included at the end are a timeline of the Dynasties from c. 2200 BCE to 1368, a complete index of the poets, and a complete index of the titles. This is a monumental work and an extraordinary gift from the translator. A typical verse from this collection, called In Reply, by a poet called The Ancient Recluse:

Somehow I ended up beneath pines
sleeping in comfort on boulders
there aren't any calendars in the mountains
winter ends but who counts the years

A sincere thank you to Red Pine and Copper Canyon Press for providing these treasures.

Once again Deborah Harding shares a piece of history with us. Her beautifully organized and prodigiously researched book on redwork quilts is a welcome addition to any quilt lovers library. It seems that no stone was left unturned in her search to bring us a comprehensive documentation of this needleart. I recommend this two volume book to anyone interested in quilts. Not only is it a lovely publication to look at, but it educates us in an area of quilting that little has been written about. Bravo Deborah!

This book would make a lovely gift for anybody interested in textile arts, even for someone with little or no quilting or embroidery experience. The presentation is lovely -- two nicely bound, wonderfully illustrated books nestled inside a snug cardboard jacket. One book features a short discussion of redwork embroidery along with illustrations of exquisitely executed quilts. The other supplies brief instructions (perhaps too brief -- especially the section on transferring the patterns)and a lovely collection of redwork patterns so that readers can create their own redwork quilt. My only quarrel with the book is that a beginner (like me!) might not feel confident with the brief instructions. However, a quick trip to the fabric store to talk to a knowledgable salesperson should dispel any doubts. Despite this small problem, I give the book 5+ stars -- it was great fun to browse through, then to read intently , then to pore over as I selected possible designs for my very first quilt!

Often it is difficult to get accurate, well documented information on traditional crafts and handwork. Much of that art form was passed down from generation to generation with very little written record. Deborah Harding has done a wonderful job of finding old newpaper and magazine articles on Redwork, as well as fantastic old patterns reproduced here. A friend of mine loaned me this set of books, and I could never bring myself to return them to her, so I knew I had to have my own set!

I loved Sauci Churchill's urban child in "Running Down Division Street". Now, thanks to "A Red Fin", I've met the adult, sifting through larger mysteries, a voice rich with lyrical phrasing steeped in ironies and twists, tender, wise and unassuming, tangible as a fresh catch. Here is a life savored despite losses and fears familiar to us all, the "stranglehold (that) could take a wall down". Her poems take us to Guadalupe, Croatia, Jamaica, a Berkeley roommate, a "composite" of husbands ("Lived with a man/ seventeen years/ didn't know till/ the day he left/ he didn't like Sundays"), cancer's "night terrors" after "surgery's unnatural sleep", "Aunt Iris' Wedding", and much more. "The Red Fin" will linger in your mind.

Here we have a second book of poems by Sauci S. Churchill.

Like her first, it is from a small house, and I am troubled by its "Currently Unavailable" status, since it has just been published. If, as has been recently noted, more than 50% of books are sold by giant chains, who have no room for these small books of poetry, how are we to find them, enjoy them? I had thought that Amazon would continue as a supplier of offbeat, non-mainstream books, but perhaps not . . . Too bad.

As to the book itself, it is another volume of the spare but meaningful poems by this author.

The images stay with you:

"My father and mother were linked like the teeth of a zipper"

and

(On cancer): "It is not the ending but an overlong third act...

prey swaddled like babies
awaiting the hungry spider"

and

"Dusk fiils the room
as sand fills a bottle"

The elegance of expression is simply beautiful, and as you ponder it, it will make you return to read again.

I hope for more, and that they REMAIN AVAILBLE.

A Red Fin by Sauci Churchill is in turn moving, illuminating, intriguing, and amusing. One feels the full weight of a bottomless well of raw, inchoate emotion behind poems like "Duct to the Heart." The poet's struggle to invent language capable of rendering that volatile substrata of feeling that underlies her experience and our own is palpable. Sauci Churchill, in her unique, understated way not only refuses to turn away from the dark, perplexing aspects of human experience--individual, cultural, and historical--but she testifies to the imagination's capacity for finding "new ways to enter" the light in poems like "Red Cherries in a Crystal Bowl." This is a book to cherish. Use it as a lantern in a disheartening moment or as a mirror in a moment of joy.

These new poems are stunning, and a fitting addition to those in "Running Down Division Street. They are both personal and universally meaningful.
