Three exciting new stories

Rebecca Brandewyne, Maureen Child and Linda Winstead Jones team up to scribe three exciting and passionate tales of romantic suspense.

Brandewyne's story stars Paul and Lily Clothier, a couple about to call it quits when he becomes the main suspect in the murder of Freddy Fontaine. Now they must rely on eachother to solve the murder and their marital problems.

Child tells the story of the daughter of a mob boss, D. A. Gina Palermo, whose life may be in danger after the death of her 'connected' uncle who claims to have left a treasure behind. Her worried dad sends Jake Falcone to protect her and the sparks fly.

My favorite of the three is Jones' 'Calling After Midnight'. This mystery revolves around sultry Veronica Gray, the host of a late night radio talk music show. When one of her listeners claims to have taken her advice when he murdered his girlfriend Ronnie turns to Eli Benedict, the PI hired by the station to protect her. Together they must find the killer before Ronnie becomes his next victim.

I enjoyed all three stories and for the price of one book you can't beat this offer. You'll enjoy reading this one on a cold winter night or you can save it for the beach.

I loved this book, I really did. It was a bit confusing at first with the first chapter. It just jumps into the middle of the story and then the rest of the book is a flashback - but afterwards I appreciated how well done the technique was. Not every author can pull it off as well as Brandewyne has done and not ruin the rest of the story. I really appreciated her effort, which she talks about in her note to the reader at the end, to show how Texas and its inhabitants, white, Mexican, and Indian, truly were at the time setting of the novel. I have to admit, LOL, that I was a little frustrated at first that she put so much detail into describing the land and its history but then I realized that not everyone is a Texan like me who would know it! I loved the character of Storm. She has real growth as she starts out this whining little girl (well, she is 16!) who faints or weeps at the slightest provocation and turns into a woman who can take care of herself but makes some really hard decisions. Life (or the author, LOL) throws some really hard curve balls at her but she does the best she can. The only thing that I would say bad about this book would be that almost every guy except Wolf is a lecher and I got tired of how many times she came close to being raped. Wolf, too, was written well. His torment and anguish as well as his love for her and his own growth just leapt off the page. I would definitely recommend this book!

Loving Others "Do" - votionals suggest acts of kindness children can DO for others. These lessons can be taught anytime and will teach children how to share God's love with others in practical ways. My kids ages 2 - 13 love them! These are especially great for the little ones, because its just "enough" to get the point across. Each one takes about 60 seconds to read and with active "boys" that's all the time we get to read them a Bible Story! There are 32 cards with simple Bible object lessons and scripture verses for young children. My husband loves them!

"Have you ever heard the sound of an entire world crumbling? If you have then you can understand...

My friend, if this story falls into your possession you will find yourself embarking upon a sadistic adventure. You will find yourself out of your depth in places, teetering between shameless excitement and total devastation... but don't worry... you will not be alone: I will be by your side. Together we will meet and get to know Anthony and Lucy Denharden, an A-list celebrity couple, and watch as their lives crumble beyond recognition. On this dark journey documenting a tragic fall from grace, we will be forced to wade through mental illness, drug abuse, violence, grief, suicide, murder... you will feel madness descend like a shadow but you will come through it, and you will come through it stronger.

Politics destroys empirical science
Helpful Votes: 23 out of 23 total.
Review Date: 1999-12-14
Though no scientist, I had heard the name of Lysenko passed about for years. He seemed to have been a mad scientist, creating bizarre hybrids and ecological disasters that plague Russia to this very day. That one man could do so much damage intrigued me, so I sought to learn more about him.

In this book, Dr. Soyfer, a former Soviet scientist who had met Lysenko, documents the destruction of science and scientists under the influence of Lysenko. Contrary to numerous opinions, Lysenko was an poorly educated agronomist who happened to have been in the right place at the right time: In the '30s, "Pravda" wrote him up as a pioneering scientist. Recognizing that newspapers and popular support could fuel his rise to the top of Soviet society, he set about making a name for himself as a scientist in non-academic journals and periodicals. His peasant upbringing and miraculous findings--never empirically proven or duplicated--made him a star proletarian scientist, the kind needed to bring about true Communism.

Along his way to the top, he was assisted by many people who thought him a sincere, but ill preparted, scientist; he later had many of these people purged after gaining the almost total support of Stalin and Khrushchev. His grand claims of producing superior cattle and wheat, among other things, consistently failed, yet no one dared oppose or even question his policies. Whether to propel himself upward, bring down the academics he apparently detested, or protect himself and his "science", Lysenko nearly eliminated all serious work in genetics, agriculture, and biology from the '30s into the '60s. Numerous scientists were exiled, fired, or executed during his reign as the people's scientist; according to the author, the effects still linger in Russia.

An amazing story of how, when politics decrees what science is acceptable and how it is going to work in the political paradigm, the results can be tragic.

WOW! Not since Sherman's march to the sea has such a bloody swath been made through Southern tradition! Rebecca T. Nunn's "The Magnolia Ball" takes the sancity of "The Ball", families, debs, coming out, the food and dress to task. She better attend her local Ball this year, because she may not be invited after the locals read her book! A bright new Southern writer is here. Ms. Nunn has as easy writing style, and whether you're Southern or not you will find "The Magnolia Ball" a fun and exciting read!

Payne Sterling is a manhattan multimillonaire from a famous and legendry New York family. He hates publicity but he is used to being in the public eye and on several occassions has been a victim of stalkers, one such case of stalking led to a tragedy which left his fianace unable to walk. When he sees his portrait on the cover of a new romance novel, he became very angry knowing that he's never sat for a portrait. He then discovers that he had appeared on 7 previous novels by the same company but not in the comtemporary setting, but as a future or past hero, in the clothing of the time. His fiance and niece believe another stalker must be after him as the cover picture depicted the exact image of his office with the exact paintings on the wall and a picture of a bulldog on his table. The parallels to his life were too much to be considered a coincidence. He decides to track down the artist and the company, the plot further thickens when he read the book and realised that this could not be a coincidence or is it?. Mr Sterling with the help of his lawyers sues the artist, the company and the writer. Lorraine Bennet the beautiful artist who painted the covers from memory following her viewing of a group photograph of her bother's in which Mr Sterling was one of the group, became appalled at the turn of events, blaming herself and wanting to make restitution. Unknown to anyone this was her dream man and his image was so etched in her soul that she wanted to put him on the cover of every book. The plot thickens after they met in court and she realises that she was deeply in love with him but decides not to give heed to such feelings as he is engaged to Dianne. But Mr Sterling has a secert which parrelled the experiences of the hero Logan Townsend in the romance novel inside the book called 'Manhattan merger'.This is rivetting stuff. It is one of the great books I have read this summer, the purity, loyalty and a sense of an abiding Pure love potrayed in the book is very inspiring. The characters depicted the above qualiites in a way that touches something deep in your soul. In a society where these qualities of loyalty ,purity and pure love are all but lacking it was refershing to read about these characters filled with such nobility of soul, highest love and respect for one another. This a must read, must have and a must keep for all readers.

If you can only buy one book on placental pathology, this is it!
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 10 total.

This compact paperback is packed with virtually everything a general pathologist needs to know about the pathology of the placenta (and more). It has a very thorough coverage of the structure of the normal placenta undergirded by a strong emphasis on basic science and embryological principles. A very practical approach to the pathological examination of placental specimens of all varieties is provided. Very helpful are the little grey boxes following each pathologic entity which provide reminders of pertinent information which should be included in the final pathology report. The book has many high quality gross photographs and photomicrographs, even although a number are black and white. Tables summarizing important or complex information are present, as are diagrams and charts which explain sometimes baffling concepts for beginners in this highly complex subject (e.g. I have always been confused by the descriptions in other books of how one should determine the direction of cord twist - I never realised how easy it was until I came across figure 3.6 in this book). The section on neoplasms and gestational trophoblastic disease is the clearest and best written account of this subject I have come across in any pathology textbook. The book ends with a chapter on the role of the placenta in litigation, and another on the future in placental studies, the latter by Kurt Benirschke. In summary, this is a very well-written, comprehensive, easy-to-understand, enjoyable, beautifully illustrated book. I can only wish that a textbook of this standard is available for every other pathology subject. By the way, Dr Baergen contributes the chapter on placental pathology in the 4th edition of Silverberg. Also, look out for the large textbook which this present book is the small-version of, the 5th edition of Pathology of the Human Placenta by Benirschke, Kaufmann and Baergen. Best of all, this book is relatively inexpensive.
