rebecca is not an orphan, she lives with her drug addicted mother. When her mother gets busted by the police she is placed at her uncle's. But Reuben is not a nice uncle, he treats rebecca as a maid ans often beats her. One day one of her teachers discover some marks left by her uncle.
Another plot for this saga that I love. Another must have for any VC Andrews fan.

This is a nice Billingual book in English and Spanish. It can help kids learn either language and make connections. It is easy and very similar to a glossary with words and terms rather than many sentences. Enjoyable to read and look at especially if you have a connection to learning either language.

vivid tale of 1860's Welsh ironworkers in WVA mills

I read Life in the Iron Mills for a graduate English course on social-class-imagery in 18th & 19th cen Transatlantic (British and American) literature with Elisabeth Ceppi at Portland State. Ceppi asked us to read closely for the rhetoric of class attributes. There was much class-identifying-imagery to observe in Harding-Davis' 1860's rendering of the lives of impoverished Welsh miners transported into late-slave-era iron foundries of the American North. Mid-19th-cen feminist literature of this social-reform type is deeply informed by Protestant missionary enthusiasm to transform everyone into clean-living bourgeois church-goers. Thus Harding-Davis uses powerful polarities of dirt for workers, clean for bouregoisie, etc. It's so blunt and obvious that she could be accused of writing soap-opera ... as many of her mid-1800's female-writer colleagues were accused, sometimes justly. However her scenes of poverty, disease, and death in the mills are so heart-wrenching that her motives are clearly pure. Now that Tillie Olsen has rescued Harding-Davis' wonderful writing from obscurity, she is good to read for knowledge of American feminist writing history, for understanding of American class polarities in the ante-bellum era, and also for a true, scary story of life with the great unwashed.

Quick read with lingering benefits

Life's Lessons gives a needed motivational kick to get you growing again -especially if you're in a rut. It's a shorthand formula for remembering why we put ourselves through tough times and why we postpone or deny certain pleasures. Basically it's all about wanting to change and then changing-professionally, personally, or whatever you need. It's a small manual, but it tells some big ideas - like how to create your own paradise (how to really experience the richness available to you right now), how to give up the good for the better, and what serious commitment can do for you. There are questions to ask yourself -such as 6 questions for taking calculated risks: What's the worst that can happen? What's the chance that will happen? If it did, can I live with it? What am I afraid won't happen? What's the benefit of not taking the risk? What's the benefit of taking the risk?
There are reminders about listening to people around you and the power of your words. It's a quick read with lingering benefits. I plan to re-read it yearly in a personal retreat and evaluation time.

A gentle story about the value of compassion

The debut children's book by author and mother Rebecca Upjohn, Lily and the Paper Man is a story about compassion in cold weather. When young Lily is walking home with her mother, she observes an unfriendly-looking man selling papers on the street. She is afraid of the man, but she also sees his bare toes poking through the holes of his boots - he surely cannot keep warm in such threadbare clothes. She comes up with a wonderful idea: giving the Paper Man warm socks, hat, gloves, scarf, and a quilt she has no use for. A gentle story about the value of compassion, Lily and the Paper Man features involved text and is ideal for young readers who are about ready to make the transition from picturebooks to more involved fare.

A Great Story With Actual Photographs Instead of the Usual Drawn Illustrations

There are at least 20 books in the Rebecca Johnson (writer)/ Steve Parish (photographer) in the Steve Parish Storybook collection and with the exception of Koala's Big Day Out I'm yet to come upon an average one. Amazon only sells a fraction of the titles so you may need to look elsewhere as well. All have Australian animals as the main characters with the series covering land based mammals, reptiles and even including ocean based ones such as clown fish and dolphins. This is a very successful series sold not just in bookstores but wildlife parks and well anywhere that sells postcards and souveneirs in Australia so there will no doubt be hundreds in this series in the future.
In Little Devils two young Tasmanian devils have been annoying their neighbours (other Australian animals) since they were born with their constant fighting and loud playing. The little devils promise their mother they'll be quiet but it is never long before they're back to their ways. One morning their mother tells them she has to leave for a while and makes them promise to behave. Shortly after a feral cat arrives in the neighbourhood on a mission to kill and the other animals hide. The little devils don't flee though and prove to the other animals the value of why they play like they do when their young. What happens? You'll need to read and find out.
Besides Tasmanian devil photographs you'll also see echidnas, potoroos, wombats, quolls and wallabies many with young as well as adult animal photographs.
The success of the Steve Parish story book collection has resulted in Rebecca Johnson putting out a similar sort of series (A Walk in) with North American wildlife such as A Walk Through The Desert and A Walk in the Prairie. But buy the original Australian ones, they're the best!

An excellent soft cloth book for babies on the go. It is a size that babies can handle and soft to cuddle with. The added attraction of it being able to be attached to anything makes it a multitasked cloth book.
