Sensible advice for anyone!

Mrs. Feldbaum has written a terrific book that gives good sensible advice for anyone who doesn't know how to implement their good intentions. By centering the book on her experience as a widow, she has allowed the reader to understand a bit more of which actions and words would be appreciated, and which are unnecessary or hurtful. Most important is that she provides a list of useful things to say, which apply even in situations where one might not feel like one should have come to the shiva because e.g. one never met the person who died or hardly new them.

A story of hardship and struggle

America is in the heart is an excellent book talking about a man's struggle to survive in his native islands and be accepted into the harsh society of America. This book truely shows the trials and hardships an immigrant goes through and I reccomend id to those who struggled as a child and struggled to be accepted into American society. This book makes us aware of the harsh realities of the way people were treated early this century. Famaly tradegies and struggles.

Me and my friend Angela love poetry so much. We write it
all the time, even when she spends the night. We went to
the library and this was sitting on the shelf of new books.
Mrs. Johnson (at the library) said it was really good, so
we took it out. I wish I could ask the author of this book
why she didn't write a poem about riding bikes. That would
have been good. But we like the one about the broom.
And the roller coaster. Yay rah for poems!

Excellent ID reference. Has well-needed drug and tx info not included in most ID sections of other references. Almost pock-sized, it is if u have a lab coat. Even appropriate for the somewhat experienced ID person due to details on seldom seen patho or seldom used drugs. Came in quite handy when I had to dose polymixin B IV...

Great Guide To Washington, D.C. And Its Surrounding Area
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-07-04
THE INSIDERS' GUIDE TO WASHINGTON, D.C. is a great book, with an absolutely impeccable description of historical sites, music venues, theaters, shopping malls, neighborhoods, and freestanding stores of all kinds. It shows the DC area, despite its reputation for having the nation's highest percentage of couch potatoes, to be an area with enough ethnic diversity to provide healthy diet ideas for anyone with any kind of celebrity crush.

There are, however, certain parts of the book that really need to be taken like the humor in comedy movies/shows featuring Alyson Hannigan, Jennifer Garner, Cameron Diaz, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Melissa Joan Hart, and Jennifer Love Hewitt. One of these is the section on the Virginia suburbs, which says that the schools south of the District are excellent, when, in fact, from all available evidence, the schools in Howard and Montgomery Counties in Maryland are much better in many areas. Another is the "Media" section, which fails to account for such changes as classic rock station WARW's recent change to Triple-A, with its new call letters being WTGB, and a local classical station's change to Adult Hits, the call letters WXGG, and the nickname "George 104" (after George Washington).

Overall, however, whether you're planning to visit or move to the Washington, D.C. area, or are just proud to be American, this book will enrich your life.

Great for learning to meditate & handling stress
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-12-07
This CD is a great help in establishing a meditation program as well as for stress alleviation.

The program makes sense and worked well for my ever busy Western mind, providing sufficient structure in clear terms with a simple effective process. The narrated voice is a pleasure to hear (supporting the instructions smoothly without being intrusive), accompanied by background music which is inspirational and relaxing.

After 21 days, the technique has "sunk in" and now can be applied as promised, in an instant.

I highly recommend it for anyone's personal use, and also as a thoughtful gift.

An Intellectual History of Liberalism

Manent breathes new life into old works

AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF LIBERALISM has the deceptive appearance of a survey of liberal thought- one of many such overviews. What Manent presents instead is page after page of brilliant, original insights into the ideas of Locke, Hume, Machiavelli, Rousseau, Hobbes, Constant, and Toqueville, among others. I stopped reading in surprise every few paragraphs in some sections, to find my understanding of an old & familiar concept significantly altered- shown in an utterly novel light. Anyone interested in early liberal philosophy will find this book extremely valuable.

A History of Iowa
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-06-26
I spent two years in Iowa, and I learned more from this little book, geared toward pre-teens, than I did when I was there. Maybe that says a lot about my powers of observation, but, in reality, is says a lot about the construction and writing of this book. "The Land Where the Tall Corn Grows" is given its full due here.

The "Portrait of America" series is a wonderful introduction for pre-teens to the 50 states and to the places and events that shaped the history of the United States. This "Iowa" installment is particularly good. The book is broken down into sections like "History", "Culture", "Economy" etc., and each section is thoughtfully written and edited. The "History" section is especially good and is very inclusive.

This book, as well as the entire "Portrait of America" series, will prove to be a valuable teaching tool to all primary school educators.
