A Fascinating Read

This is a really lucid and engrossing guide to the poet and her times. The book makes an excellent job of weaving the verse into the wider historical and political context of 19th England. Detailed readings of her work help to explore and sometimes explode the myths that have collected around Barrett Browning, offering a portrait of the artist as a free thinker whose ideas still have the power to question the dominant ideologies of our time. Although theoretically informed, the book does not get mired in long expositions of Foucault or Derrida but rather sticks closely to a detailed account of the work and its contexts. The book is essential reading for anyone studying 19th century English literature and will be of general interest to anyone who would like to know more about the poet.

AFTER DARK by KyAnn Waters
Kayla March is tired of not being able to find sexual gratification. She has a good feeling regarding a new club she's heard about and is hopeful that she'll meet a man there who will make her fantasies come true. What she doesn't realize is that AFTER DARK is a vampire feeding ground, but not to worry, the man destined for her will find her - and she'll learn a few truths about her own background that could shatter everything she's ever believed.

KyAnn Waters has proven herself to be a versatile writer and with this vampire tale she solidifies herself as an author to keep on the auto buy list. Kayla and Alandro will touch your heart and leave you hungry for more.

FROM THE SEA by Maxie Cooper
Kelli Rhodes loves the beach - the sights, the smells, the sounds - but she's terrified of the water. She'd rented the seaside cottage seeking peace and solace while she paints. Imagine her surprise when a gorgeous man walks from the water. She paints underwater seascapes, is it possible they're more than simply her imagination?

I've always admired seascapes and Maxie Cooper makes them even more magical by incorporating them into this storyline in a magical way. I found myself fascinated by Maxie and her love/hate relationship with the sea and loved learning the reason for her fear.

LADY'S CHOICE by Rebecca Airies
Kyna has worked hard to find acceptance as a Laurati soldier. She's learned to guard her heart because her own society has ostracized her because of her background. Now that she's amongst the Calazi she's finding temptation in the form of two superior officers, Commander Finn Tarn and Drace Amon. When the three are trapped in the kitchen area during a blackout things heat up but what will happen when the power returns and their rendezvous in the dark is over?

Rebecca Airies doesn't disappoint with this futuristic menage a trois story. I love how Kyna, Finn and Drace interact and agonized over how the men would react when she reveals her secret worry.

SUNRISE by Natasha Moore
Caroline isn't looking for a happily-ever-after. All she wants is smoldering hot sex with no demands and no expectations - well aside from breathtaking orgasms. She's been meeting Alan on the beach at sunset over the past several months and so far managed to keep all their encounters in the dark. Alan wants more than satisfying sex. He's ready for more of a commitment but can he persuade her to trust him with her heart?

Natasha Moore's SUNRISE takes readers into the mindset of a woman who's been burned by love once and has no intention of going through that again. Told entirely in 1st person this story is an emotional adventure that touches the heart.

SURRENDER DOROTHY by Anna J. Evans
Gelsey is fortunate to be working as a costume mistress at a local theatre. Her biggest problem is she's lusting over the Tin Man, a.k.a. Stephan and fraternizing amongst the staff is forbidden. Much to her surprise Stephan is definitely aware of her and certainly plans to make her his, but there are complications and it looks like the Wizard of Oz may resemble Gelsey's reality more than she could ever believe.

Anna J. Evans makes the Wizard of Oz seem tame compared to this tale. I love how Gelsey and Stephen appear to be perfectly normal but then their true natures come out and there's no doubt that they're perfect together.

THE DEBUTANTE by Samantha Kane
Dominic, Viscount Lethbridge, isn't interested in any of the lily white virginal simpering debutantes who are constantly being thrown his way. That doesn't stop him from taking interest in a particular debutante who may not be a raving beauty but she has the backbone and sensuality he finds desirable. Clarissa doesn't care about getting married but she does have an interest in the experiencing carnal desires - and Dominic is just the man to teach her all about passion - and then some.

Samantha Kane tells intensely unexpected historical stories and she certainly doesn't disappoint with this tale. I love that Clarissa isn't your typical debutante and there's no doubt that she's ready for everything Dominic has to offer.

ELLORA'S CAVEMEN: JEWELS OF THE NILE II is a prime example of what an anthology should be. Each story is full of impassioned characters who leave the reader in awe of the authors' talents. What I especially love about the Cavemen anthology is the mixture of genres. It's the perfect opportunity to try out a new genre or even an author you haven't tried before.

This book was written clearly and concisely. It was excellent preparation for my finals--the content and wording of each question was spot on. Thorough and accurate, I found this study guide to be head-and-shoulders above other similar texts. Unlike other guides that seem to waste time with a lot of extraneous hoopla, this text was apt and straightforward. It was well worth the time and money.

Earth enthusiast's delight

Review Date: 2002-05-04
The publishers of this spectacular feast for the eyes would more aptly describe this reference volume for young adults as an Earth Album. Its seven sections brilliantly cover just about every topic that shaped, affects and changes the plant we live on.

The book opens with an 18-page section briefly describing the Planet Earth, beginning with its place and size relative to the Solar System and Universe. A second two-page spread describes how our home looks from outer space, and the mapping of even remote regions for which satellites (among other things) have been employed. Kids will discover the factors that create and change the seasons, as well as the scientific explanations of day and night. Those who joke about digging to China or America (as the case may be), can inspect a cross-section of the Earthýs core, learn about its crust and faults (as in earthquake zones) and a bit about the rocks, minerals and fossils scientists have found here. Four more pages explain the earthýs many mineral and metal resources, as well as its fossil and other energy supplies.

In a second 18-page section on Earthquakes and Volcanoes, kids discover the intense forces that explode, grow, shift and change the earth. They learn about volcanic hot spots--especially hot places on the Earthýs mantle through which extra-hot magma can shoot up and burn through the Earthýs crust to erupt on the surface. They discover the various kinds of lava, and what creates hot springs and rocks. They explore volcanic islands, and view one such place being created and see one of Hawaiiýs black beaches. No section on Earthýs violent center would be complete without an explanation of the ruin sometimes created by earthquakes, and how they happen--and this doesnýt disappoint.

The section on Climate expands to 28 pages, given the vast atmosphere and ground there is to cover.
Kids learn about the Earthýs atmosphere and its five layers (including of course the threatened ozone layer), its air and ocean currents (including El Nino) as well as the natural carbon and nitrogen cycles that help keep climate in balance. The book introduces the possibility that global warming and a greenhouse effect may be damaging Earthýs weather balance (without concluding definitively that they are). Kids learn about the various climates, including mountain, sea, arctic, tropical, desert and temperate climates, exploring a few pages on types within each group--from tropical rainforests, grasslands and deserts to polar, mountainous and temperate grasslands.

The 16 pages on Weather describe both its importance to life and its formation and more extreme aspects. Kids learn about the water cycle that makes rain, what creates thunderstorms and windstorms (including tornadoes, hurricanes and sea spouts) and why floods and droughts occur and what can happen when they do. The book notes the severe drought that hit the Southern Great Plains of the U.S. from 1931 to 1938, creating the legendary Dust Bowl. It even discusses freaky weather, raining frogs and strange lights (aurora borealis). And for kids who are news junkies, the book tells a bit about weather forecastingýand why itýs sometimes wrong.

Another 10 pages briefly describes the myriad forms of life on Earth--including plants and how they grow, how animals live, and ecosystems and how people affect them. Kids learn about varied kinds of farming--from giant agribusiness and crop farming to family organic farming.

A further section explains how the land is shaped. Kids learn here about soil layers, types of soil and the creatures (like earthworms and slugs) that burrow and enrich it. They also discover the means of protecting the Earthýs soil and about the erosion and weathering that can shape and destroy it.

Finally a 14-page section teaches kids about the Earthýs many water habitats. They learn of rivers and what creatures live there, how they shape the land, and the uses and misuses to which men have put them. They learn about ground water and rivers of ice, and of course about the many seas and oceans as well as the coral reefs, ocean zones, and creatures that fill them.

The book closes with a six-page glossary explaining the many terms in the book and brief sections including maps, Earth measures, Earth cycles, lists of Earth sciences, world records and measurements. Kids even get lists of websites where they can learn more. The Scholastic edition of this book is one of the best values in our substantial home library. Alyssa A. Lappen

Truly Excellent Bird Book!!

This has become one of my favorite books on birds. It is packed with very interesting information. You are guaranteed to learn something new! I bought this book for myself, but whenever I picked it up my children wanted me to read it to them also. The illustrations are wonderful! I have always enjoyed Rebecca Rupp's easy delivery of so much useful information in such an understandable, relaxed, and often humorous fashion. Before I had even read halfway through the book, I ordered my mom-in-law (a fellow bird-lover) a copy for herself. It is a quick, easy read. You'll probably finish the book before you want it to be over. I am thrilled to have added this book to my collection and would highly recommend it for just about anyone interested in birds or learning new things.
