The Rainbow People by Laurence Yep is a very interesting collection of Chinese myths. People who short stories over novels will enjoy this book.

The Rainbow People is divided into five sections, which are titled "Tricksters," Fools," "Virtues and Vices," "In Chinese America," and "Love." Each of these sections has an short introduction that gives us a hint about the upcoming theme. Some of the sections have contrasting ideas; for example, "Tricksters" is about people who are smarter than they think they are, but "Fools" is about people who think they are smarter than they are.My favorite stories were in "Tricksters" and "Virtues and Vices," but I enjoyed reading all of them. Reading this book gave me a good idea of the Chinese culture.

I recommend this book for people who just like to sit down for about five minutes and read a short story. It also helps if you are interested in different cultures around the world. For those of you who want to finish a book in one stretch, this isn't the book for you.

The Rainbow People has a lot of stories on life like there is a section on tricksters and a section on fools which is my favorite section with my favorite story The Eels Disguise which is about a fool who makes a decision to have eels and he tries to wash them and loses them in the water a thinks that turtle
Is an eel?
I like this book because it lets you get a feeling on
people perspective on life. That is why I recommend this book also this will give you a chuckle here and there
The things that I don't like is that is that some stories are tragic because a lot of peoples family
Are killed by monsters.
In the end I think this book is great book so get out and buy it.

Great Source of Chinese and Chinese American Tales

Yep for the most part retells and combines stories collected by Jon Lee in a 1930's WPA project in Oakland's Chinatown from Chinese who would trace their ancestry to Kwangtung, China. (xi)

The stories are broken up into Tricksters, Fools, Virtues and Vices, In Chinese America, and Love tales. Each section has a brief introduction which contains some history and cultural information as well as additional source information.

Each story has a bookmark size brush and ink illustration. The illustrations add a glimpse into the stories.

Yep's stories are very readable, but might need a little trimming for telling. These stories are interesting and offer a look into the lives of the earliest Chinese Americans.

Getting students to see the connection between their classes is often difficult. Students in middle school do not see that Literature and Social Studies are interconnected. Yep's tales help suppliment an often "boring" unit on Ancient China.

I teach intermediate special education to 4th, 5th and 6th graders who had no background in algebra and basic number sense. Reading the story of Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt provided a means to evaluate the student's ability to identify patterns in the book, in the classroom and in their clothing. This reinforced lessons that had been taught and provided a literature connection.

Tihs book is about a man name Sam Johnson who wanted to make quilts. So Sam took the blue quilt from the pigs pin to patch the hole. The same day his wife came home and Sam showed her the quilt and said "I'm going to join your quilting club". Whe Sam walked into the room for the meeting everyone stared. So the next morning Sam put up poster for the men who wanted to make quilts. Sam hade the meeting in his barn and the men agreed to everything Sam hade said. The next day the men started on their quilt.

This humorous picture book reminds children that men not only did the chores on the farm, but actually did some sewing and quilting - and that joining forces with their wives helps solve a near-disaster when the quilts fall into the mud. The drawings are clear and colorful, and the resulting creation will inspire everyone.

I did not find this workbook relevant to 7th/8th grade curriculm for science or social studies and overall way too basic for math or english at 7th/8th grade. More for elementary school 3,4,5 grade.
As far as a "summer bridge" I would suggest that you encourage your kids to playing games and activities outside or board games on rainy days than this book.

A Great Read For Hip-hop Heads

This is an extraordinary book for the Hip-hop lover. There are poems in this book that range in everything from racial profiling, sex, love, politics and so much more. Shabazz-Perez definetly executed the struggle in the black community and aided in the constant attempts of the African Americans to let their voices be heard through the muck of the streets.

The concept of this book was hot. Mr. Shabazz-Perez understands that poetry(Hip-hop, Spoken Word) is an outlet for our youth and acts as the news paper for those who don't know whats going on in today's world. This book touches on so many live subjects and it puts perspective on hoodlife, streetlife, and just life as a whole.

For those who are looking for a change of pace and loves to read the urban brand books, this is the book for you. Don't pass up an opportunity to read Acid Rains on My City, But I See Rainbows in the Puddles.

Acid Rains on My City, but I See Rainbows in the Puddles
by Shabazz-Perez

This book is wonderful I feel every person should read this book it's just great. My daughter got this book and read it non stop she is in her second year in high school she had her friends calling for her to read pages to them because she would not load her copy out.

There is a young boy in her school that has not picked up and book to read in 6 years once he over heard my daughter reading this book to a class mate he then asked if she know where he could buy a copy for himself. He thanked my daughter for telling him about this book. He said now here is a book he dose not mind picking up to read.

Please pick up this book it a great reader.

We can walk through the ghetto, hear stories of the ghetto or read about the ghetto, but unless you are a first-hand witness to the ghetto YOU DO NOT KNOW. Brother Shabazz-Perez has compiled some powerful poems from the lives and mouths of babes. His God gifted students from the Chicago public school system share what they have experienced in the ghetto through poetry.

The poems are written in a plethora of topics, but whose focus is our life. On page 66, Remembering Africa, a short poem about pain and emancipation; and below it is a short story of discrimination and the pot calling the kettle black.
I love the play on words with the title "Acid Rain on My City but I See Rainbows in the Puddles." No matter how acidic the ghetto gets God made all of us a promise, and the Rainbow in the puddle is our reminder.

The Best Reference Fish Books

All of the Aqualog books are excellent value, although they are not particularly cheap. They are full to the brim with first class colour photographs and to reproduce these in a book is an expensive process. Whether they are about Rainbow fishes, or some other species of fish they are the most comprehensive identification books you can buy. They never become dated because as new fish become available to the aquarist trade the books are updated.

They do not deal with the basics of fish keeping, there are many and varied books that do that. They are in the main a fish identification encyclopaedia and nothing more. But for those aquarists who are particularly interested in a particular species they are indispensable.

Bea is a very ambitious kindergartener bored by the silly games she has to play with the other 5 and 6 year olds. Mr. Jones is an advertising executive stressed by his job and his commute who dislikes his boss's sense of humor. One morning Mr. Jones suggest they switch places- a plan that is perfect for each of them. Bea loves being an executive, riding the train, entertaining over lunch and loves the boss's sense of humor. Mr. Jones is a whiz at color identification, enjoys turning cartwheels and quickly becomes the kindergarten teacher's pet. After several days of switching, they see no reason to return to the old way of doing things.

I love the illustrations as well as the very tongue in cheek text. The drawings are finely wrought in pencil with great detail and texturing- my son spends time wondering how she could do so much variation with so little. There a few books with only black and white drawings so this one is fantastic for inspiring aspiring artists.

I have the fortune of working with Amy Schwartz and was absolutely DELIGHTED to learn that she was the brain behind this particular book. I remember seeing it for the first time on Reading Rainbow as a kid and loved it. It's a humorous look at the age-old gripe between adults and kids: children who want to be grown up and grown ups who want to stay children. Well written and with simple art that is reminiscent of early American black-and-white engravings, BEA AND MR. JONES is a sweet story that should be read by every kid, young and old.

This book is excellent.

Now i know how it is to feel copied because i have a little sister who wants to be like me.

I like this book because it has bright colors and great illustrations. It shows kids when you share with other kids that they will somehow repay you. It also hints to your children that you can be yourself, and don't change for other people. It's fairly easy. I would recommend it to this book to kids ages 3-9. It's a very cute book.

My 7 year old daughter LOVES these books! She reads and re-reads them.
The stories are suspenseful enough to keep her going without the typical
evil we see so often. Their is definately mischief represented in the book, but nothing over the top. These books kept her reading over the summer, transitioning from 1st to 2nd grade. We can't get enough of them!

Book Description: Olympia's overbearing aunt used her as her personal servant, until attractive Dutchman Waldo van der Graaf quite literally rescued her. He suggested that she exchange her life of drudgery for the role of his wife. Waldo needed someone to look after his small daughter and run his home--a marriage of convenience. Olympia was thankful and accepted his proposal, but soon realized she had only exchanged one set of problems for another when she found herself falling in love with her own husband!

Another excellent story Neels fans are sure to enjoy involving a Rich Handsome Dutch Doctor and a British Nurse described as having a pleasant face with "no startling good looks" while being kind and hard working. Olympia's aunt is basically the evil stepmother, Waldo's his female "friend" substitutes for the evil stepsister, while small "daughter" adds "something" extra to story. Neels incorporated a little touch of mystery with her Cinderella tale of misunderstandings, false assumptions, and dishonesty.

Betty Neels novels are a MUST...
