Ever feel like something's just not right? You've been feeling blah but you aren't sad? Feel out of synch? Not harmonized? Then you need this book.

The Rainbow in your Life talks about how different colours affect you and they way you think and act. There is a GREAT quiz that helps you decide what colours you should be wearing, eating, decorating with and more. Some of the questions in the quiz are "What is your favourite season?" "Review your wardrobe and list the three most predominant colours," and "List the three dominant colours in your bathroom."

These questions and more will help you see if your are surrounding yourself with the right colours. Once you figure out your colour(s), you can go to the appropriate section and see suggestions on lighting, food, fashion and how your colour(s) affect your family, career, health, relationships, friends and even vehicles.

You will also find info on the different types of colour: neons and pastels, different tones, monochromatic and more. The book has instructions on creating your own Colour Mandala to aid in meditation. There are even small sections on Auras and Dreams.

This book is HIGHLY recommended.

"Rainbow" is one of the best compilations of poems for the "common masses" and the those of the "intellectual gentry" as well. It is a most pleasing cross section of subjects that reflect the thoughts, feelings, fears, joys, sorrows, failures and triumphs of men and women no matter what country or culture they may inhabit. This is poetry, simple, direct and heart felt. It reaches us all right where we live everyday. Great job, great work!

Excellent for Japanese kids learning English, & some adults

I'm an English teacher in Japan. One day, my brightest 7 and 10-year-old students started quoting from a brightly colored Japanese-English dictionary their parents had bought from them... and they kept reading from it whenever possible.

"Buy me cake ! Don't be stingy ! Please give me a reward ! Don't step on me !"

It's a rare treat, to have a dictionary that kids can't wait to read out of.

This dictionary's primary intended audience is CHILDREN.
All definitions have colorful drawings, with English and relevant and fun English sentences in both Romaji and Katakana. All Japanese words are in both BIG HIRAGANA and KANJI with little FURIGANA markings above the kanji, so Japanese kids can find and read the Japanese without being masters of Kanji.

I STRONGLY recommend having one or two copies of this book in a children's Eikaiwa *English conversation school in Japan). It'd also make a good present for a Japanese child under 13 years old, interested in English.

Price in bookstores in Japan is 1400 yen.

Note: Both my 50-year-old female friends had copies of this book, so apparently adults are also drawn to its colorful, easy-to-read format.

If you're studying Japanese & Kanji, this is OK for looking up Japanese words and seeing the furigana over EVERY Kanji, but you may have more success with Gakken's Rainbow English-to-Japanese Dictionary (for japanese kids) than with this Japanese-to-English dictionary.

The 2 dictionaries are also available as a single book.

Friedman, Jonathan C. "Rainbow Jews: Jewish and Gay Identity in the Performing Arts", Lexington Books, 2007.

Intersecting Identity

Amos Lassen and Literary Pride

I remember learning that "Rainbow Jews" was listed as soon to be published and trying to get as much information about the book as I could. The wait for it was well worth it. Jonathan Friedman has written an incredible look at gay and Jewish identity as reflected by American and Israeli film and theater from 1960 up to the present time. The scholarship of the book is all encompassing and admirable covers the subject. Friedman explores the methodologies and theories of queer theory, the history and the linguistics of film and the stage and presents a picture of the influence that gay Jews have made to the world of the performing arts.
The book looks at the extent that Jewish gay voices have created various multidimensional expressions as well as a place for all aspects of GLBT life. Freidman went about his task by looking at numerous plays and films and then evaluates them with regard to convention and trope which contribute to the social reality of the connection between religion (Judaism) and homosexuality. Along with this, he looks at the contribution that Jewish filmmakers and playwrights present sexual norms within Judaism and how those norms are reflected in the GLBT community today.
Issues that have always mattered to the Jewish people--justice, love, acceptance and mourning are equally issues of the gay population and there are the major themes of both drama on stage and drama on film. Like the gay community, the Jewish community faces ideas and motifs that have little unity, victimization, persecution. Inclusion of the gay population--more specifically the Jewish gay population as a sexual and ethnic minority into the larger Christian heterosexual population gives a voice that needs to be heard.
If we look at what is considered by many to be the ban on gay sex as found in the book of Leviticus of the Old Testament, we can interpret the "ban" to be an alternative way for man to lose his humanity. Instead we can say that the "ban" is non-conclusive and can be interpreted in a variety of ways--one of which is to understand the true meaning of what Leviticus says. To exclude gay men and women from a religion that advocates social justice and acceptance would be a major misinterpretation of what the Old Testament really says.
If it is indeed the case that Jewish gay representation in the performing arts leans toward integration and redemption, we must understand why this is true. Redemption has always been a major theme in all of Jewish writing and within the idea of redemption is integration. The Jew and the gay have always yearned for a place in the larger society--in many cases by mainstreaming and assimilation. The acceptance of the gay community into society is a response to the reality that in many cases Jews have managed to find a place whereas gays are still struggling. We must not forget that for the Jews this took many decades of strife---of changing, in many cases, who they are and how they appear until society was ready to accept them. The same is apparently true for gays and lesbians. Gay Jews have to adopt the social paradigm of society and adapt to it or risk non-acceptance.
It is indeed important to remember that all we have today in terms of religious and sexual acceptance is because a long road has been traveled with many stops along the way. All we have today in the world of performing arts is dependent upon all that came before and ushered in the little that we have now. The basis of the visibility of gay Jews today is what has brought us to this point. Would we have been so lucky to have a movie like "Brokeback Mountain" being shown in mainstream theatres if other smaller movies had not made the attempt for acceptance before its breakout? The same is true for the success of Jewish themed projects. Taking gay and Jewish together and making these two visible has been a labor---a labor of love.
"Rainbow Jews" is an indispensable look at how far we have come and hints at how far we still have to go. It is not a book just about gay Jews but about any minority group that seeks to find its place in society.
Friedman's scholarship opens our minds to the ideas that we may never have considered and his prose makes understanding of it simple and concise. I must personally thank him for writing some of the things I have always felt and doing so in a simple and concise manner. "Rainbow Jews" is a book and a study that has long been needed and now that it is here, it makes it that much easier for us to understand ourselves.

My daughter blazed through the entire thing in 1 night - she had already read and loved the weather fairy stories so this was expected. They appear to be stories of "real" girls interacting with fairies to defeat the wicked Jack Frost.

Anyway, popular with my 6 year old!

A Must-Read for Niagara Students and Alumni

As a student at Niagara University, I have seen the great many accomplishments and the minor, yet annoying faults of Niagara. An educational institution now over 150 years old, Niagara University has a long history involving many trials and tribulations, most of which centered around balancing the "progressive" movements over the decades, with the Catholic and Vincentian heritage and mission of Niagara. Doctor Stranges' book gives a detailed history of the University, looking at the individual presidents and defining events of the time, which came to shape Niagara into the beautiful, friendly campus community it is today. After reading his book, I have a much greater understanding of how and why Niagara University developed into the great educational institution that I am very proud to be a part of. The book enlightened me in many different ways, and has actually encouraged me to put forth an even greater effort, so that one day I may be able to stand as accomplished and dignified, as some of Niagara's most distinguished graduates...

For current students: read it because you will appreciate your chosen university more, and understand why some of her current faults exist, while feeling grateful that many worse faults were tackled and defeated by previous generations...

For alumni: read it because you will understand how important your class was to the development of the university, and how essential alumni, like you, are to the continued evolution of Niagara University...
