In 1986, the plastic model industry surprised the world by releasing a scale model of the Stealth Fighter, an airplane so secret that even today the United States Government denies its existence. How could a company dealing in miniature plastic models scoop the press, perhaps even the Soviet Union, in revealing not only the existence of the plane, but its major characteristics? The engineering of models is as advanced as full-scale designing. Is it possible that both engineering groups reached the same conclusion?

Black Rainbow tells the story of an aircraft engineer who's modeling experience is put to use in unraveling a baffling mystery surrounding a stealth fighter at the Air Force's secret Groom Lake test center in the middle of the Nevada desert. In writing this novel, the author has used his own engineering and modeling background to show the parallels between miniature a full-size technology.

Realistic portrayal of yelling, feeling bad, and making up

Review Date: 1998-10-29
My three-year-old son loves this true to life book. What mother hasn't yelled at her child? We need stories that help children learn to cope with the emotional turbulence that is part and parcel of caring for young children, balancing career and family, etc., etc. This story fills that need and helps mom and child reconcile and grow together. Emotions aren't swept under the rug in this book.

Brush: Giving Grown Ups the Brush Off
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-23
"Brush" is my favorite "little boy" book, although it's perfectly wonderful for little girls too. I buy it in bulk when it's available in print (it's sometimes very hard to find) and give it as presents whenever I can. "Brush" reaffirms the magic of childhood and gently reminds parents that they really don't know it all.

When a little boy's naughty dog misbehaves, his parents insist he give it away (that is still the harshest part to swallow). Heartbroken, the little one searches for a replacement among his family funriture. He finally settles on an old scrub brush, which he adopts as his pet. He inists that it is real and takes it (on a leash) everywhere with him. The grown ups in his life balk at this charade and chide him for his frivolous imagination. But he does not despair. One evening when his family is in danger, Brush saves the day, proving that things are not always what they seem. Fortunately, the parents admit their shortsightedness and embrace Brush as one of their own. I love this book because it is at once kooky, sweet, funny, and poignant. We grown ups don't know it all. And listening to our children opens up worlds of wonder that we might never experience if we don't really listen to what they have to say.

Fun Facts

My aunt (a teacher) gave this book to my son for last Christmas though barely 2. He loves it! What a great concept for a book! It has simple graphics and a fun rhyme on the left side to help them remeber how to pronounce the bugs. On the right it has interesting facts about them. Each time we read it, we go through the rhyme and then sometimes spell it and/or learn a new fact about it. I never try to read him the whole fact portion, just give him a morsel when he asks. It is easily still one of his favortie books to be read at night time and a book he likes to look through on his own.

Practical and Fun Bulletin Board Resource

Review Date: 2007-08-08
Although I love decorating bulletin boards, the task can be very time consuming unless you have either: 1) big bucks and can afford to buy premade cut and colored kits or 2) buy the books in this series for easy to use ideas and tools! It is so worth having the boards decorated for the kids. This series of books is the best I've worked with if you are short on time and ideas for your boards. The patterns are full sized and ready to copy onto colored paper. There are even theme-related boarders, but I prefer to use precut solid borders (bought separtately) because you don't have to color them and they make your board stand out as long as they a solid color. If you don't have ready-letters, this book has the sayings already to copy. All you need is colored printer paper, a decent photocopier, some scissors and markers. You can make awesome bulletin boards from the books in this series. I have every book and it is a worthy investment. The boards are never boring and when you have enough patterns it's easy enough to interchange them if you want.

Caps for Sale is Timeless
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-05-02
This is a book I loved as a child. It was originally written and illustrated by Esphyr Slobodkina before WWII and obviously takes place in a European village. It tells the story of a peddler who sells caps, so instead of carrying his wares on his back, he wears them on his head, hats pilled as tall as he is. Our peddler has to walk very straight (we tell Devon to walk straight like the hat man all the time) so he won't spill his hats.

One morning the peddler couldn't sell any caps, so he went for a walk in the country and fell asleep under a tree, caps piled high on his head. When he woke all the caps were gone but one. The poor peddler had fallen asleep under a tree full of monkeys and each one was high in the tree, wearing one of the peddler's new hats. The peddler gets angry and shakes his finger at the monkeys, they shake their fingers back. He shakes both his hands at them, they shake their hands back. He stamps his feet, they stamp theirs. And you guessed it, he throws his hat on the ground and they throw their hats on the ground too and the peddler gets his hats back.

This story is timeless. Devon likes it and I'm sure years from now, his children will like it as well. Reading books like this is much better for toddlers than television. Sara and I think so anyway and we hope you do to.

This book is amazing! It has romance, adventure, humour, it's got everything! And, it's good! One of the best, and most accurate, portrayals of Buffalo and its surrounding areas, geographically and emotionally, capturing the whole Buffalo attitude and way of life. As a native, I know. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone, although probably at least in eighth grade.

Galloping For Carousel
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-22
The illustrations of this book are outstanding. It resembles those of Harry Potter. I was most impressed with the story's poetic rhythm. The author makes use of strong analogies that allow young readers to truly put themselves in the young girls places as they manipulate the carousel on a magical adventure. The story leaves readers wondering and interpreting the author's intention for the characters mother. Students in K-5 will enjoy writing other adventures that the carousel horses may encounter or other adventures that the girls may have with their mother's tools. Great book!

For Secular Franciscans.....or anyone looking for insight

Review Date: 2007-08-21
This is a wonderfully insightful book, particularly to those investigating a vocation to the Secular Franciscan Order. It offers an easy-to-follow theological and historical journey into the many aspects of understanding Church, discipleship, inner-conversion, commitment, and big-picture thinking. I have recommended it to many non-Secular Franciscan friends since most of the chapters are broken up into themes. It can also be used to guide meditation or retreat.
