My daughter and I stumbled up Ruby the Red Fairy, it was just such a good story, we had to get the whole collection to find out what happens at the end. My daughter is five years old and not only enjoys reading the story - because it is just challenging enough for her (and advanced reader), but also just loves the story. I am sure we will be reading all about the other fairies as well, the weather and gem fairies! Great stories!!!!

What can I say! This Rainbow Magic Books 1-7 Boxset was a gift from "Santa" for my 7 year old. It was great to see her reading them for most of Christmas Day. She loves this series and has created a puppet show, her own written story, and even paper drawings of the characters so she can include them with her WebKinzs. Highly recommended by dad!!

This was my favorite book when I was in the fourth grade. As a mother of a precocious four-year-old, I've struggled to find a book that was age-appropriate in content and also a terrific read-aloud chapter book--something that would occupy us for a long stretch. This book is perfect. My daughter loves this book and I've loved reading it again. We read a chapter together each night. I wish it were still in print. My library requested it as an inter-library loan to get a hold of a copy.

Still My Favorite Book!!

This is a wonderful book about Emma, a little girl who wants to be an artist. Her parents and teacher, though, don't understand her creative vision. When her grandmother comes to visit, she finally finds someone to share her art with, and finds someone new to love.

The first time I read this book, I was afraid that the grandmother would die in the end. So you won't worry, I want to tell you now that the grandmother DOES NOT die.

This book has inspired me to WRITE!

Do you need a book that confronts racism, appreciates theater, and shatters stereotypes on a primary level? If so, Amazing Grace, by Mary Hoffman, is the book for you. Not only does this book cover the above topics, but is also highlights on key items for younger readers, such as reading about individual achievements and moral dilemmas.
Grace, a first grade African American female, has an imagination with no boundaries. Grace loves to act out stories that she is told. At school, Grace's heart runs with excitement when her teacher announces that the class is going to do the play Peter Pan. Everyone wants to be Peter Pan, which highlights the enthusiasm for theater among these students. However, as Grace wants to be Peter Pan, her classmates tell her first that she can't because she is not a male. The second reason her classmates say is that she can't be Peter Pan is because she is black. Here lies the racism in this book.
The teacher allows each student to take home lines and memorize them to try out for roles. The best would get Peter Pan. In the mean time, Grace's grandmother takes her to a Romeo and Juliet ballet that features a black Juliet. This inspires Grace to go home and learn those lines as best as she can so that she will be the best one in the class. When it is time to try out, Grace is by far the best Peter Pan and the class votes to let her fill this role. This is where the shattering of stereotypes comes into play.
Past the social issues, Amazing Grace also fulfills the requirements that the Temple textbook states are good children's literature. First, children's literature must speak to the child. Children, especially that would read Amazing Grace, are extremely egocentric. Therefore, they want to read about the potential for individual achievement. Any child that is repressed for any reason could identify with Grace. There are a lot of things that Peter Pan was not, not just simply black. African American students could truly identify with Grace, having to deal with their differences that are spawned by their skin color and culture.
The last noticeable characteristic of good children's literature apparent in Amazing Grace is the presence of in depth thought, especially on morals. This book spawns thought on all the social issues mentioned above. This book would most certainly cause students to re- evaluate their thoughts and stances on racism, stereotypes, and maybe even theater. So many times, students think that what their parents believe is what they have to believe. However, educating students can help not only in letting them make their own decisions, but also educating their parents as well.
Finally, this book is an excellent book for teachers because there are many activities that can be done to accompany the reading. Perhaps this would be a great book to lead into their own class play. Another idea is to place this in a unit on racism and segregation in the upper elementary levels. Also, a teacher could do dress up day and the students could be whatever they want to be. All stereotypes are shattered for the day and each student can be free to be who they are. Amazing Grace may be one of the most influential books that I have ever read on racism and the way that Grace and her family handle this issue is admirable.

I got this book with my five-year-old in mind, but all of my two-year-olds and three-year-old also found it engaging. The illustrations are colorful and whimsical without being overwhelming or chaotic.

I think this book is probably best suited for slightly older children as some of the examples were not familiar to my children. For example, my children have never been in a stadium, so that example was a little abstract for them.

Overall a good book and an excellent way to introduce the concept a million.

This picture book is a great pairing of engaging children's literature, detailed illustrations and a deep math concept. I love the way that Schwartz and Kellogg bring this book to life!
I love Kellogg's illustrating! I would just love to jump right into the pages and be a part of all the action. His characters are drawn with such unique faces. And each page is filled with numerous details and endless nooks and cranies. Each page begs to be explored over and over.
If you have never enjoyed a book illustrated by Steven Kellogg now is the time!
The writing in this particular book is also very well done. The little facts about the number 1 million are really interesting. For instance it would take a fish bowl the size of a city harbor to hold a million goldfish!
This book really helps kids and adults understand a very abstract concept. How many of us really have a good grasp on how much a million really is? This book definitely puts it in perspective!
Read it once and you'll have to read it again and again!

Nahani lives forever

I traveled this same B.C. wilderness area as a child in 1967 with my family. So sad to say people like Eugene Charley were the rule more than the exception. Greg was isolated in his incredible knowledge of the wolf; he was also gifted by the friendship of many wolves. He put himself at great risk of freezing or injury, living through unforgiving winter and traveling unmapped territory, all to understand and honor Nahani and her pack. This book is one of a kind, sharing a spiritual bond like no other. Nahani is still here, every time I see a rainbow I feel her spirit. I was deeply sad to read in one of the reviews about people who killed a wolf because they believed it was stalking them. What they did was kill a lonely wolf who probably saw them as a pack and followed them because it wanted them to welcome it into their pack. If you like wolves and their cousins, you will enjoy: Wolves at Our Door : The Extraordinary Story of the Couple Who Lived with Wolves and James Herriot's Dog Stories: Warm And Wonderful Stories About The Animals Herriot Loves Best

Just finished reading this and it is truly the most powerful factual story I have ever read. It has a similar thread to a fiction novel by another Native American author, Ghost in the Rainbow. There is a ghost wolf Indian spirit in that story, and I couldn't read this story without referring back to that one. The Native Americans know something about wolves, and this book touches upon that something...are wolves spirit creatures? I am of the opinion, because of these two books, to believe wolves are a lot more than animals. I can only encourage people to read this story. You will never be the same.

There are three non-religious books I read and re-read constantly. "In the Shadow of a Rainbow" is one of them. Man and wolf become alive before our eyes, with unexpected depth and dimension, as does the land of BC itself - and my life has become the richer.

I despair of ever seeing this story done properly on film, but there is one person who could do it justice - Hayao Miyazaki, master storyteller from Japan, known the US for "Totoro," "Kiki's Delivery Service," and "Princess Mononoke." (He could also do a worthy animated "Diary of Anne Frank." With the eye and heart of a spiritual magician, and artist's touch to match, I wait for him to bring Nahani alive on the screen. In the meantime, I'll just have to keep reading the book itself...

I have read many wolf books, but this one brings a feeling of bondage between Man and Wolf. But the story is not goody-goody. There are bounty hunters and trappers as there are in real life. This book refers to a map in the beginning of the book a lot, but you can manage to do without it, its not vital. Though this is a slightly shorter book it still has all the action and emotions as if you were really there. It is a really good buy and would recomend it to any wolf or animal lover.

This has to be one of my favorite children's books and being a soon to be teacher I have read a lot of children's books. One of the reasons it's my favorite is that it touches a subject that is close to my heart, the Vietnamese culture. My mom came to America after the Vietnam war with my sister who was 5 and brother who was 1. I never knew how important the lotus seed could be, but growing up I enjoyed eating the fruit and peeling it off the seed. This book is truely one of a kind and as I read it I learned more about my mom's culutre and just how special it is.

This is one book that I'll keep for many, many years even when I retire from teaching.

This book helps me remember more about Vietnam and why I appreciate my culture so much. The significant symbolism of the lotus seed is the culture Vietnam and what the woman endurance in her past. Ba picked out a lotus seed from the imperial garden because of its beautiful and fresh scent. The lotus seed has never left her side as she carries it with her through the tragedy times and moved to a new country after the Vietnam War. One of her grandchildren planted the lotus seed in the backyard and it grew into a beautiful lotus flower. The beauty of it reminds Ba of her country.

This is definitely one of the best children's book I have ever read. The images are beautifully drawn as they describe Vietnam and the story. The symbolism of the lotus seed reminds me of my culture and I should never forget it. I really like how the author added a Vietnamese poem at the back. A must read for all young and old!

Author Barbara Meislin has captured and expressed the message that is eternal and yet so needed in our lives and societies. The strong heartful reminder that comes across for all ages, teaches us that we each have a core essence that can not be harmed by outside events, deeds and experiences, even great loss. Through this moving story Barbara shows us that when we choose love and give it, this simple act contains all the transformative power needed to change and heal. The personal story is shared with great courage.

I have stood underneath the rainbow at Neve Shalom and have seen the gift it brings to children and visitors from all over the world. Thank you Purple Lady for expressing this timeless message in such a colorful story -one from which every child, including those within, can draw the courage to live from vision.

I must first admit that I am one of the two children noted in the back of the book that Barbara originally sang this story to after my mother died when I was 11. This story is just as heartwarming to me now as it was 22 years ago, still carrying the beautiful message that there is always hope. I love it and am so proud that it's now available for young and old to enjoy and hear this beautiful story as told by a beautiful woman.

I got this book when I personally needed a reminder that no one can steal my rainbow. Its simple, yet powerful message reached into my heart like a shot of love. Now, it makes me smile and opens my heart every time I re-read it. The fact that it's inspired by Barbara Meislin's own true story of loss makes it all the more meaningful to me. The beautiful illustrations support the story, as does Barbara's CD of a soulful song she wrote and sings with the same title and words as the book. I'm also impressed that the profits of this book are donated to benefit children and peace. It works for both children and adults.

What a fantastic message this story has, which can be especially applicable to biracial children. The main character, Rob, is a penguin. He's not happy being black and white, so he decides to investigate what it would be like to be other colors (green like a crocodile, yellow like a lion, pink like a flamingo, etc.). After all his searching, he realizes there are others like him who are also beautiful, concluding that he's happy in his own skin, being black and white. VERY cool!

I have worn out more than one copy of this book. The author creates characters so steeped in the late 1800, mid-western culture. Maybe it just appeals to my mid-western roots, but I found this simple tale so romantic, heartfelt, touching and hopeful.
Sarah works and lives on the farm with her parents. Content with things, secretly a wild romantic, and tragically in love with her sister's husband. Or so she thinks.
Digger Turner is the misunderstood man, seen as trashy and bad. With an ingrown sense of fairness, both Sarah and her father see something different in Luke "Digger" and offer him something he has never had before. A chance.
Through unexpected tragedy, Sarah finds herself needing Luke. His honor keeps him by her side. Her circumstances offer him his dream. Together they find love.
It is the most romantic, loving story I've read. Honor, redemption, love and committment in the truest sense of those words.

What is so unique about this book is that it is a good old-fashioned believable love story. The main characters are flawed, as in real life. Another unique aspect of this book is that the hero is just as vulnerable as the heroine. He is not described as an emotional "rock", always there to save the day. Lisa Gregory, aka. Candace Camp has shown in this novel that there are no social barriers in love and that everyone deserves a chance to live down a bad reputation. I have read this novel four times. I believe anyone who reads it will end up reading it again and again. Truly a tasteful, sensitive, well-written novel.

This is a wonderful book to read with passion. It is a favorite of mine to read to my primary students - sharing the excitement of a barn dance, while preserving the mysteriousness of a full-moon night. Important addition to a library - but only for those who want to stay up late with all of nature! A fabulous book. I adore it.

I love this book, and frequently give it as a gift. Its perfect for young boys. The verses have a great cadence, and the illustrations are beautiful.

One of the best kids books around and a favorite of my four little ones.

Fantastic imagery for children...and fun for adults too!

As one of our family's favorite books, Barn Dance! by Bill Martin has been worn out twice at our house. The story is set on a farm at night as a "skinny kid" discovers that there is more going on after dark than the old owl lets on. The farm animals show him that a certain kind of magic exists if you just believe. The book is fantastically written with a slightly irregular-sounding rhythm that is fun for adults to read to their children, and our kids beg to read along--making this one of the first books they would try to read alone. We have also read this aloud to our daughter's class to rave reviews. This is a great book to dive into over and over, you'll find the magic will have you tapping your toe along to the "music" too!

As an avid square dancer this delightful book captures the joy and thrill of an evening of dancing. I have shared it with my two granddaughters, ages 7 and 4. Although they question why we might dance with the cows and chickens, as shown in the wonderful illustrations, they have a better understanding of what we do at a square dance. My husband is a caller and finds the scarecrow a charming immitation of the same role. A must read for dancers of all ages!
