Tough Guys of the Silver Screen - The Golden Age of Hollywood

It seems James Parish churns out far too many books. However, his series of books dealing with films and stars of the Golden period of Hollywood are absolutely indispensible for movie buffs.

Anyone old enough to remember the old (now defunct) film magazine, ''Films in Review'', will recall the magazine's monthly career article on stars which covered their films in detail. The article was followed by a filmography and many photos.

The Tough Guys is in similar vein. It covers the careers of male stars who specialised in playing ''tough guys'' on screen - stars like James Cagney, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Paul Muni, Edward G. Robinson and Robert Ryan.

The great thing about this book is that all of the stars' films are covered in detail along with details about their personal lives (each chapter is like a mini book). At the end is a detailed filmography and a section on photos.

Anyone interested in old stars should immediately add this great book to their library.

Great guide to tough guys of classic Hollywood.

This book is a great resource on tough guy actors who aren't as well known as Bogart. Has sections on Robert Mitchum, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Edward G. Robinson, Robert Ryan, and Paul Muni. Grab a copy if you can find it!

a book that brings focus, imagination and delight!

My daughter is 22 years old. But we both remember clearly the fun we had as we read The Trek and tried to find the animals hidden in the city background. They are so cleverly hidden, that a child cannot remember where they are, from 1 reading to the next. And we are still not sure we ever found them all!

This book fosters imagination as the child reads it, and helps the child to find wonders in clouds - and everywhere else in the world! It is wonderful.

Children are mesmerized!

I am an elementary school teacher who loves to read aloud to her students. My students are addicted to Ann Jonas' books. They especially loved this one because of all the searching for the different animals. It is even better than the I Spy books. The children can't wait to read another one of her books.

Uncle Willie Teaches Compassion

Can a soup kitchen be warm and inviting? It can when Uncle Willie works there.

When his nephew has a day off from school, Uncle Willie invites him to spend the day helping him at the soup kitchen. Although hesitant at first, the young boy discovers, that in Uncle Willie's eyes, that the food collected from his neighborhood is not just food, but preparation for a feast. To Uncle Willie, the soup kitchen visitors aren't strangers. They are his guests.

You'll travel with Uncle Willie and he gathers donated food throughout the neighborhood. His enthusiasm is so contagious all along the way that you'll almost be able to smell the food cooking. Pay careful attention to the illustrations as every page offers a look into the spirit of the kitchen, who pays a visit, and the inner workings of a successfully run organization. You'll find bright posters, a cheery staff, and inviting table arrangements.

While the book is directed at children aged 4-8, anyone will come away with a positive feeling and enough working knowledge to get them started in volunteering.

To further discussions on hunger and poverty, you'll want to make sure to read the introduction. It's a good starting point for asking your local librarian for help in finding out more about the subject.

Uncle willie and the soup kitchen is a beautiful, wonderful book to read with a child. It presents a young boy and his Uncle willie as he gathers food to prepare at a soup kitchen in which he works. The fact that Uncle Willie considers the denizens his guests, and not moochers or people looking for a handout is deeply moving. No treacly sentiment,no preaching, this is a lovely story which made me cry upopn first reading it.I read it with my kids, and have pressed copies upon others since discovering it in a remainder bin! My first grade class adored it, and it stimulated a great discussion afterwards on hunger poverty and helping.Reaaly very well done.Moving gentle loving, belongs in every library.

This book is phenomenal! Ann Hart is an extremely gifted psychic who through her personal experiences with Guides and Ghosts provides us with some of life's lessons to be learned. She shares dramatic photographs that her Guides instructed her to take and shares their significance. Ann Hart takes the life after death fear and dispells it with the loving kindness that her Guides and Ghosts share with her, leaving you with a sense of deep peace and many questions of your belief on life after death.

As a student first meeting Dr Ryzl at Foothill College during an ESP workshop in the 1970's I can honestly say his writing still facinates me to read! His mind is still fresh and candid and he is still such a wonderful find for JB Rhine to bring and we are very grateful & lucky in the USA!

As a private ESP student of his for a short time later, I am still finding his books to be spot on in regards to the state of the world then and as we now find ourselves today.

Enjoy!

You should read this newest book by Milan Ryzl.

In "Voyage to the Rainbow" the author describes his life of research and teaching parapsychology (science of little known potentials of human mind) - from the observations of fraudulent or self-deluded "psychics" to the period when the communist government of his native country insisted on recruiting his expertise for espionage. His dramatic escape from his country reminds the James Bond 007 thrillers. This entertaining part is followed by the description of results of his research (e.g., the implications for understanding the message of religions).

It will open new horizons for your thinking.

This is a very touching book. I highly recommend it for it isso educational for all to learn what wars are all about. Some werevery lucky to return home to their families and some weren'tso lucky.I can't even imagine experiencing anything like this for it was such an ordeal for Forrest to go through. He must have had so much faith in God and prayed that he would not be executed so that he could return home to his family. To this day Forrest has nightmares about his ordeal being shot down and living like he did in prison for I'am his daughter. He has lived in agony with his injuries from being shot down but he continues on going with what life has to offer. Please read this book and believe me when I tell you that once you start reading it that you won't be able to put it down until you finish it.It will make you think.

Yip Harburg, the prodigiously talented lyricist best known for "Brother, Can You Spare a Dime" and "Over the Rainbow", is the subject of this splendid biography. Harburg's gifts were uniquely his, but this book shows us how his (financially, but not spiritually) impoverished father cultivated Harburg's talents by taking him regularly to the Yiddish theater on the Lower East Side and reading funny stories to him in the evening. Harburg's insights into the elements of creative writing-- a sense of passion, an eye for paradox, an intelligent plan, e.t.c.-- are recounted in loving detail. Whether you read this book for insight into this wonderful man's heart, or his craft, you will be richly rewarded.
