The Best Book on the True Hawaiian History

This book really covers everything about the real ancient Hawaiian culture and its culture after the Tahitian takeover. Very fascinating and probably the most true publication on this subject in its field. Most of the time, people are given the "whitebread" version of Hawaiian history that has been tailored to the common American way of thought (in fact we still meet people today who visit Hawaii and think that all the locals still live in grass shacks and are living a third-world lifestyle). If you really want to know the true history, this is it, direct from the mouth of Kaili'ohe Kame'ekua (b.1816-d.1931).

Great book for teaching and for learning yourself!

This book is intended for teachers, and it is great for that purpose, but I also recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about emotions and how to handle them in their life. Get it for your students, for your kids, or just to for yourself.
My daughter was in a class that used the Rainbow Kids story as a tool, and now that she is an adult, she still talks about those lessons. I am a business school graduate who does a lot of negotiation in my work, and this children's story has been an invaluable tool to keep me focused and keep me out of the fray when things get tough!
In this story, the author does something I would not have thought possible: use clear metaphors to teach you how to understand and handle strong emotions like anger. Defining emotions as clouds (anger) and rainbows (happiness) may sound silly and childish, but once you are inside the story and begin to understand, it becomes very powerful.
For children, this translation into metaphor makes learning about emotions fun and easy. Once they have heard the story, kids can understand that when they are mean to someone else, it creates a "cloud" that sits over them both.
I have to admit that as an adult, I learned lessons that I have kept with me since reading the story, and I have been able to keep from getting dragged into other people's fights ever since! I hope my experience helps you understand how powerful this book is (with apologies to the author for my paraphrasing her wonderful work):
In the story, clouds are a metaphor for anger, so the kids in the story throw clouds at each other when they are in a fight. When a cloud hits you, you ball it up, make it bigger and darker, and throw it back. To join in a fight, you just grab a cloud (or stand there and someone will no doubt throw one at you) and then you throw it back.
At one point, a new boy enters the scene when everyone is fighting and the clouds are flying fast and furious. Of course, someone says something mean to the new kid, throwing a big, dark cloud at him. As it is about to hit him, the kid simply steps aside, letting the cloud dissipate past him. Just by stepping aside, the cloud doesn't hit him, he doesn't make it bigger, and he doesn't throw it back.
After the fight is over, one of the other kids asked the new kid how he kept from getting into the fray: "Why didn't you throw that cloud back?" The new kid answered "That was not my cloud."
"That was not my cloud."
I now remember that line every time I am about to enter someone else's fight, or any time someone tries to draw me out with an insult or a pointed question. In business (where this happens all the time), if you don't get drawn into a fight you can remain focused.
I hope you will read and use this book for your children, your students, and for yourself! Once she took the class, my daughter started to say things like "Why did he throw that cloud at me?" She learned new tools for dealing with anger and conflict. Sitting in business meetings, I still smile and say to myself "That was not my cloud."

Teaching Conflict Resolution With The Rainbow Kids Program by education consultant and school staff developer Barbara Porro is a straightforward, user friendly, "how to" guide to implementing a program specially created to teach young students respect for the classroom and for one another. Using "sunny" and "cloudy" metaphors to convey human emotions, the Rainbow Kids story and program is a direct, easy-to-understand approach to help young people better learn the fundamental arts of self-control and cooperation with others. Teaching Conflict Resolution With The Rainbow Kids Program is a highly recommended contribution to teacher training supplement reading lists and academic curriculum development reference collections.

This is definitely a book that can be shared with all ages. I have a 7 and a 4 year old. Both of my kids have listened to and fell in love with Freemont. As you follow along on this journey, it is amazing at how many little life lessons are included in the story. The things that we may look at in life that are actually there to help us, not harm us. This book is inspiring and I can't wait for the next one to be released.

Hidden beneath the adventures of Freemont are eternal spiritual truths that can uplift any reader. Wounded and angry, Freemont struggles with the same problems we all struggle with and slowly becomes more open and compassionate toward life and the others he meets in his travels. He's on his way to discovering the environmental dangers that face all frogs, their causes, and very possibly, sometime in the future, their solutions. Great for children, youth, and adults who are young at heart.

We used this book as a spring board for an environmental unit. We planned mapping, canoe safety, first aide safety, camping and landforms. We also planned a field trip to a local park with a creek and set up stations that involved the different aspects of the book. We used newspaper ads and had the children decide what would be needed for a canoe trip and tied it in with math, teaching money. This was a great book.

In first grade my daughter's school had a "Blue Book Bag" program: each week the students brought home a different book and a journal in a blue book bag. This was my favorite book of the year (I am a kindergarten teacher and was an English major, if that holds any weight). There is something charming and dreamy about Three Days on a River in a Red Canoe, which is a child's journal of a canoe trip. It was so easy to slip into the joyous adventure of the journey--feeling the heat of the afternoon, the beauty of the jumping fish, the quiet damp of the mist. The relationships between the adults and children implied a long history of love and confidence in each other. In addition, the book has text in unexpected places, so it is visually fun. There are a couple of recipes as part of the narrative and directions on how to tie a Two-Half Hitch knot, so you if you and your children really love the book, you can extend the experience. In the Accelerated Reader program, this book is third grade level, but my preschool daughter also liked it very much, so it can appeal to a wide range of ages (maybe 4-9?) Mother's Day is this Sunday, and I have told my girls that for Mother's Day I want a red canoe--or at least a hardback copy of this book.

Wow! What romance! I'm not one to read poetry. I was introduced to this book at the Madison Street Inn in Santa Clara, CA. Evidently, the author of this book stayed at the Inn a few years back.
The owner of the Inn, Theresa, left the book open on my bed. The book was opened to the poem titled, "The Kiss." It was the PERFECT way to start a very romantic evening with my partner. We were passionate and loving and moved to purchase Beverly's book.
Great work Beverly! We're really impressed...
This is a very romantic book of poetry.

Tough Guys of the Silver Screen - The Golden Age of Hollywood

It seems James Parish churns out far too many books. However, his series of books dealing with films and stars of the Golden period of Hollywood are absolutely indispensible for movie buffs.
Anyone old enough to remember the old (now defunct) film magazine, ''Films in Review'', will recall the magazine's monthly career article on stars which covered their films in detail. The article was followed by a filmography and many photos.
The Tough Guys is in similar vein. It covers the careers of male stars who specialised in playing ''tough guys'' on screen - stars like James Cagney, Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster, Robert Mitchum, Paul Muni, Edward G. Robinson and Robert Ryan.
The great thing about this book is that all of the stars' films are covered in detail along with details about their personal lives (each chapter is like a mini book). At the end is a detailed filmography and a section on photos.
Anyone interested in old stars should immediately add this great book to their library.

This book is a story of wisdom from an ancestor of the authors, a very wise woman and Hawaiian elder. The book contains much of interest about Hawaiian culture, told through the eyes of the authors in a deeply personal way. It is a memoir in a way, including genealogies and historical perspectives, but it's so personal at the same time, and filled with insights and descriptions of the Hawaiian culture from a Hawaiian perspective that is rare. This wise woman (the ancestor who the book is about, and who is the "voice" of the story) lived for well over a hundred years and had the chance to see Hawaii change profoundly, so her insights are very special.
It is the memoir of a family, but the memoir of a culture as well, which to the Hawaiians is the same thing. It's hard to explain how the book is written, because it is written in a non-linear (but not confusing) manner, and the content is told through stories. It includes a glossary for the many unfamiliar Hawaiian words.
Reading this book, like Pali Jae Lee's other book, Ho`opono, felt like a gift and a privilege to me. Again, I felt like the author's culture was being shared with me in a vulnerable and gentle way that gave me so much insight and appreciation for her, for her special husband, and for the Hawaiian people.
Highly recommended.
