This book is excellent, it is very sad though and you are to be warned before you buy it, you will do a lot of crying before getting to the end.

What struck me most about "Rainbows and Rain" was how well the author put words to the experience of grief. Her use of analogies like "the picture falling off the fall" -- her description of how it seems something that was ALWAYS there is now gone -- helps the reader better understand her own feelings, and provides words that articulate those feelings to others who don't get it about grief. Waterfall nails it when she says in the opening, "We don't manage grief, it manages us." This is a highly recommended read for people trying to grapple with their own emotions after loss.

If nothing else, this book serves to remind those suffering from grief (of any kind) that they are not alone. In revisiting her own journey out of the abyss of grief after the losses of her parents and life partner, Ms. Waterfall gently and patiently assists the reader in dealing witih the overwhelming feelings one experiences at such a time. While no book can make the pain go away, this one feels like a loving friend giving us permission to feel all that we need to feel as we work our way towards healing, giving words to the pain in our hearts.

Ancient Wisdom Revealed in Christian / Catholic Ritual

Review Date: 2000-06-19
Science of the Sacraments is not a book that should be read from cover to cover. Rather, it is a marvelous reference book for understanding the traditional Seven Sacraments of the Catholic church. Rt. Rev. Leadbeater elaborately unveils how the Sacraments were originally intended to provide stately ritual, deep mysticism, and spiritual outpouring for any sincere participants, whether members of a Catholic church or not.

Not surprisingly, a majority of the book is devoted to the Holy Eucharist, its origins, original intent, historical changes, and mystical components, i.e., ceremonial beauty of cooperating with the angelic kingdom. The Tridentine Rite is explained, historical alterations and deviations discussed, and justification is provided for the revised liturgy that is used by adherents of The Liberal Catholic Church worldwide. The revised liturgy strips away common Christian intolerance and threats, i.e., references to "hell" as a place of eternal damnation. Negative threats are replaced with references to reincarnation for all of us as evolving spiritual beings whom inevitably "wander from the path which leads to righteousness."

The Science of the Sacraments is a compendium of study and explanation for the functions that are essential to Catholic ritual. Prospective readers will find answers to questions they never even considered, supported by scientific thought and clairvoyant investigations. For example, the use of Holy Oils to open the chakras at Baptism and close them with Extreme Unction is detailed. Also, the expansion and unification of the auras during Holy Matrimony, a Sacrament that is performed by the participants and not the celebrant (who is but a witness) suggests a spiritual bond that can never be broken.

Hundreds of additional activities and components are explained including the importance of ray candles, appurtenances, vestments, and music. It's difficult to imagine a better book on the topic of the Sacraments.

I loved this book!

Who better than a Catholic Bishop turned Theosophist to take us down the path of the hidden secret meanings behind the century old ceremonies. It is refreshing, revitalizing and immensely inspirational to know that at one time it all was based on the occult! All lapsed Catholics should read this book!

This is a great book for any esoteric student

This book is an incredible work outlining all the different Catholic (and reformed Catholic) sacraments and their esoteric meanings and symbolism. I found many parts to be especially interesting - namely the censing and the church vestiments. All in all, it's an incredibly interesting read for the esoteric students and, I would think, the serious Catholic student as well.

I bought this book because I am actually working on a book of my own on zombies. I had seen the movie on numerous occasions but I had always heard of Davis' contempt towards the movie and had often wondered what about the book was so much different and I have to say that this is another example of how Hollywood should just leave books alone...

This is one of those books that I don't have the words to describe that would really do it justice... The thing to keep in mind when reading this is that this all true (according to the author at least)and that aside from Davis' accounts about Voodoo zombiism there are numerous other sources that explain the phenomenon in much the same way.

I recommend that everyone read this particularly if you are a fan of all things zombies!

YOU COULD GO TO THE TRAVEL AGENTS AND BOOK YOURSELF ON A FLIGHT TO SOME MICKEY MOUSE STYLE FUN PARK THATS ALREADY GETTING OUTDATED AND RUSTY AFTER 15 YEARS, HOWEVER IF YOU TRAVEL BY 'WADE DAVIS AIR' YOU WILL FIND LOCATIONS, SETTINGS, AND STORIES THAT YOU WOULD SAY ARE DEFINTELY NOT OF THIS WORLD. I HAD NEVER READ ANYTHING LINKED WITH THE VOODOUN RELIGION BEFORE, OR GIVEN IT MUCH THOUGHT OTHER THAN ITS SOME FARSICAL STAGESHOW, PUT ON BY CLEVER ILLUSIONISTS OF THE UNCIVILISED WORLD. WADE DAVIES TOOK ME BY THE HAND AND INTRODUCED ME TO THESE PEOPLE, AND THEIR WAYS. HIS BLEND OF ANALYSIS AND STORY TELLING LEFT ME WITH LITTLE DOUBT THAT WHAT THIS MAN HAS SEEN IS A DIFFERENT REALITY, A REALITY WHICH WE HAVE BEEN CONVINCED TO OVERLOOK, AND DISMISS AS RUBBISH. ITS TIME TO OPEN OUR EYES, AND THIS BOOK HAS INSTILLED ME WITH THAT BELIEF.THE ONLY BAD THING ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT IT ENDS!

This book details the adventures of an ethnobotanist as he tries to uncover the mystery behind zombies in Haiti. In the beginning of the book, Davis describes how a New York psychologist named Nate Klein described to him the odd story of Clairvius Narcisse, who was pronounced dead and buried, yet showed up 18 years later back in the market place of his hometown claiming that he had been made a zombi and made to work as a slave until he escaped with some other zombies. Klein was completely convinced of the veracity of Narcisse's story, and wanted Davis to travel to Haiti to discover which herbs and other toxins were used to "kill" Narcisse and then bring him back to life again. Davis accepts the mission, and then travels to Haiti to investigate zombies and Haitian Voodoo. But in order to discover how people are changed into zombies, he has to first gain the confidence and respect of the Voodoo leaders. Davis eventually accomplishes most of what he set out to do, along the way relating much about Haitian history and culture as well as Voodoo beliefs. The book is very compelling and well documented, including an extensive annotated bibliography, as well as a glossary and index.

This beautifully written book spoke to the core of my spiritual being about a time when the loss of a loved one was eminent. The questions, the disbelief, the anger and finally, the acceptance are all a part of the shadow that is cast over death.
In this true story, the reader experiences Elizabeth's very personal struggle with God during the final week of Ruth's young life. I loved the honesty of Elizabeth's prayers finding the intensity of her emotion cathartic.
I had the pleasure of hearing the author, Linda McGehee, during her recent speaking engagement in South Texas. The charm of this "Southern lady" radiates as she engages her audience in narrative and readings from her book and her heart.
She, like her book, should not be missed!

I have recently finished reading Shadow on the Rainbow, by Linda Rogers McGehee. Linda is a long-term (notice I didn't say "old") friend. It's always nice to read something that a friend has written. You know the people and places in the story. But, you also learn more about that person and people in general.

Linda's story is "a southern Tuesdays with Morrie," and illustrates her struggle to answer those day-to-day questions of hope, despair, life and death. It chronicles an unlikely friendship of two women from seemingly different walks of life. Although different, these two women take the lessons offered by the other, and grow in friendship and understanding.

For me, it reaffirms my belief that God sends us what we need when we need it. We get lessons. They may be subtle and temporary, like a flower or a person, or it may be something intangible, like a moment in time. Whatever form the lesson takes, we continue to receive it until we learn what we are meant to learn. Once we learn the lesson, then we get the Gift, the Gift of understanding, serenity and peace.

The story offers a lesson in simplicity. Her struggles cut through the maze of religion and bring the reader to spirituality, or our continual and conscious contact with God. It is perfect for those going through loss and death. It is written to be used for both personal and group meditation and reflection.

I had all but forgotten about this gem from my childhood when I saw it sitting on the Halloween display at the library where I work.
That night when I read it to my daughter, the clever illustrations and the humor brought back a flood of memories from my own childhood. And when she told me that she wanted "the movie of Space Case" for her birthday, I knew it was one of those timeless treats that would carry on into her memories when she's a mother.
Marshall's subtle brand of humor, paired with the charming illstrations makes this a great non-spooky choice for Halloween reads.

This book is a real treat! The humor can appeal to the older kids, while the cute Halloween story can appeal to a younger age.

'It came from outerspace' begins the story and as this thing tries to make friends with cows and chickens and learns to trick or treat a cute story unfolds. The pictures are funny. I particularly like the father who lets them in the house after they have been out trick or treating (very funny) and the costumes that everyone wears are great!

It's adorable and it came from outerspace and it should be on your bookshelves.

Trick or Treat - this is a treat!

"It came from outer space." Luckily it arrived on Halloween. While most of the natives were unfriendly (a cow and a chicken), the thing manged to find some friendly aliens out trick or treating. Buddy McGee takes the thing home only to discover that it is from outer space. He quickly makes friends with the thing and takes him to school. Will the thing stay with Buddy forever?

Marshall has done it again with a wonderful story accompanied by droll illustrations. The beauty of this Halloween tale is its appeal to adults and children alike. This is a standard in my Halloween read aloud bag. It can be used from K to 5th grade with great results.

If you are exploring South East Utah by car BUY THIS BOOK!

Review Date: 2008-06-28
A great book for exploring SE Utah by car, it is well researched, accurate and full of great advice and descriptions of what to find literally mile by mile and tenth by tenth.

If you are only buying one book for travelling south east Utah and exploring by auto this is the one to buy.

Black and White photos that show perfectly what to expect at each location, detailed and accurate maps of roads, trails and waypoints, campgrounds and facilities in each location and along the routes, good background information combined with accurate and in depth descriptions of most of the roads and two tracks in the region makes this a book you will want your 'navigator' to have open on their lap while you are driving.

Pull over often and read the descriptions and information at each milepost and you'll get more from one 50 mile ride than you would get from a month of being here without this book.

This is not a hiking book and the trail descriptions are not a Hikers Guide, so if you are a hiker you will want to pick up other books as well, but this book makes it a piece of cake to find each and every trailhead and to know what is at the end of each trail,or along it worth seeing.

Don't miss out on this book.

This is a wonderful guide for auto travel in SE Utah. Using the mileposts as references was a great idea and easy to use. If we did not have this guide, we would have never found an off the beaten path dinosaur track site. A definate need to have refence book for the serious day tripper in Southern Utah. Wish K. E. Rivers would write another book.

The layout and format of this book is extremely useful for planning day trips in easily accessable areas of Southeast Utah. There are many good references in regards to camping and backpacking trips if your so inclined. I found this book in my library and found it full of so much information I took it with me on my trip last May to Southeast Utah. It didn't let me down. The format uses highway mile posts for directions and I found this really easy to follow. I found it so useful I made the decision to buy it as two weeks was not enough time to explore all the areas listed.

This book is great for young minds learning about the great history of America. It reminded my son and I of the opportunities we have here because of the freedom we enjoy and that is due to the many brave soldiers who have fought over the years for that very purpose. Peter Spier is one of my favorite illustrators of children's books. Here, his illustrations for three verses of Francis Scott Key's poem and song, "The Star-Spangled Banner," provide an excellent introduction for children to the meaning behind his famous lyrics.

I usually read this aloud to primary classes around a patriotic holidays. This year, because of our late school year, I read it for Flag Day. Since the words and historical setting are unfamiliar to most younger students, I have begun introducing this book with "The Story of 'The Star Spangled Banner,'" which can be found in "The Children's Book of America," edited by William J. Bennett. These two volumes make fine companions.

Even with this introduction, Key's text needs explaining, however with Spier's finely detailed illustrations, this task is much easier. Children love to examine the intricacies and they usually come up with some excellent comments and questions. On the page featuring Arlington National Cemetery, they ask about who died in battle, why some of the grave markers are stars instead of crosses, and why the flag is flying at half-mast.

Our copy of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is nearly worn out from heavy use. That should say something about the popularity of this excellent patriotic book.

our four-year-old claims this is his FAVORITE book. Perhaps it is because his mother chokes up and tears drop to her cheeks as she reads this book. We have found that this is an excellent read-aloud and has stretched our four-year-old's language skills in many ways. As if The Star Spangled Banner weren't moving enough, the arrangement of pictures flows along with the words of the song to create an image of heroics and bravery. In addition, little incidentals like soldiers feeding their horses and wet clothes hanging to dry aboard ship cause us to remember that these were real people fighting. Peter Spier mixes history with the present as he causes us to remember what these men were fighting for. We see schools and businesses, Arlington Cemetery and the Statue of Liberty, cities and rural farms, synagogues and churches, Amish buggies and a Friends Meeting House all as evidence of our cultural diversity. We also see that the fight continues as we witness a renovation project and scientists working in a lab. The first, second and fourth verses are illustrated. The pictures help the capable parent define words such as "conceals" and "discloses." In addition, the artwork contains so much information and story that conversation just develops as the book is read. There is an oustanding collection of Flags of America and a thorough history of the War of 1812. The words to all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner and the music by J Stafford Smith follow. Peter Spier is becoming our hero as the author of our favorite children's books.

Children go through critical years afraid to speak up , ultimately impacting their adolescene years where self esteem is so important. This book teaches that everyone has a special gift along with the hidden message that everyone should be careful when critisizing too quickly. The illustrations were wonderful and truly brought out the feelings of the little starfish. We love the book.

Starboortz Fish is a cute, well-illustrated story about finding and using your special skills to become happy and successful. Isn't that what we want for our children. My school kids love the book and Starboortz Fish is their new hero.

I bought Starboortz Fish after hearing talk show host Neal Boortz discuss it on his radio program. Starboortz Fish was referred to as the answer to Rainbow Fish which is a book in direct opposition to what I believe our children should be taught. Mr. Boortz devoted a full chapter in his book "Somebody's Gotta Say It" to the - anti-individual, anti-success, anti-personal property rights - story told in Rainbow Fish. Rainbow Fish sends a terrible message to our youth.

I hope that others will start reading Starboortz Fish. We need children to learn that... 1. They are special, unique individuals; 2. Using their talents to provide a needed product or service leads to success; 3. Success is a good thing. Job well done Ms. Hughes and Ms. Clark!

This is a beautiful little book about sorrow and hope and how we are all part of something greater than ourselves. It is written for children, but adults will find it meaningful as well. It tells the story of a teardrop falling from a child's eye. The teardrop sees a rainbow and wonders how to be a part of it. Its journey leads it from a puddle into increasingly larger bodies of water until it reaches the sea and evaporates. The book has a spiritual tone to it and would dovetail well with just about any religious tradition. I highly recommmend it for anyone going through a crisis, child or adult.
