Joyce Rapier has done it again! Windy John's Rainbow and The Pot o' Gold is another wonderful compilation of endearing stories. We're back in the holler with J.D., Tut, and the rest of the family. The boys are back to their merry deviltry while Ma, Pa, Grammaw, and Grampa are teaching some of life's most important lessons.

Each story plunks you smack dab in the middle of rural Arkansas where this close knit household exemplifies the true meaning of unconditional love. We witness the kindness shown to strangers and other nearby families. Work is hard, loyalties are fierce, and life is good. Ms. Rapier's ability to describe these heartwarming and humourous scenes of long ago is quite magical. Bravo!

This ain't no sci-fi book, it's pure anecdotal history of two boys growing up in rural Arkansas. The "hill talk" is a pure today as when Windy John was a youngster. Life was so much simpler back then, and Windy John, Tut and the others lived it to the fullest. You will laugh one minute and cry the next but there is much more laughter than tears. If you want to re-live the simpler days of yesteryear, buy this book today. The author does a great job of telling her dad's story. I knew Windy John in his later years and he was one hell of a character.

Rascal is an over energetic puppy who'll never be a show dog like his brothers and sisters. Instead, he ends-up `proud mama' to a feisty little chick who takes too long to grow up. With Rainbow clinging to his head like an odd hood ornament, Rascal travels from the barn to the city. Lessons are learned, and battles fought as Rascal and Rainbow work to keep the fox from the hen-house, chase raccoons from their owners house and help pick out Christmas trees.

A great story-time book for the younger kids, and an interesting, fun read for the older ones.

Readers may have heard the name "Alvin Ailey" but this book makes the man live. From the time he was a kid his life was music: at first in church. Alvin's moving, leaping body is caught perfectly in the scratchboard illustrations toned with watercolors and acrylic. A fine top choice biography of an African-American artist!

A Unique and Revealing Story

Review Date: 2007-08-11
"And Then a Rainbow" is an intimate journey with a Japanese family as they made new trails from Japan through California, and then back to Japan and back to California.
The recollections of Ms. Shimonishi-Lamb are like the kitchen conversations that many third and fourth generation Japanese Americans yearn for with their own grandparents or parents. Personal family stories about internment and other wartime events are few and far between, which makes this book a treasure in Japanese American history.
The Kubota family came from Yamanashi Prefecture to San Francisco. They first settled in the Sacramento area building a successful rice company. Later, they traveled south to the hills of Palos Verdes and farmed near the Pacific Ocean. The children attended school in San Pedro, the Los Angeles Harbor District.
Mili married Toshio Shimonishi, from Hiroshima, and they lived in the Los Angeles area for a short time until the war broke out. They were interned in Cody, Wyoming, at Heart Mountain Relocation Camp. There, they grappled with issues of citizenship, loyalty, and family values. They were repatriated to Japan after the war and the author gives a unique account of an American rebuilding her family life in post-war Hiroshima.
Many years passed and her desire to return to America became a reality. And once again, she was rebuilding her life but this time, it was in Long Beach, California. Mili finally got her rainbow.
Of all the books I've read on Japanese American history, this is one of the most interesting and is one of my favorites.

This book is a wonderful read aloud to share with any grade in school as it can be adapted to suit different age groups & their comprehension abilities. Along with Keats' other books, it has an urban theme & great to use as a mentor text or author study.

Apartment 3

I first read this book to my daughter when she was 4-years-old. The New York tenement setting was such a foreign world in contrast to her suburban Dallas upbringing that she was immediately enthralled with the fact that so many families of diverse ethnic backgrounds would all live in one building. Keats paints such a vivid word picture that a child as young as she could easily be drawn into the story line. The characters and events became real to her, to the extent that she could literally hear the harmonica playing. My daughter begged to revisit this story and consequently every trip to the library for the next year included Apartment 3. To this day, at age 29 and expecting her first child, she still recalls this book and wants a copy of her own.

Great Book to Introduce Sciene!

This is a wonderful book to introduce kids to the concept of "science." I am a teacher and I used this book to explain to my Kindergarten students what science is and what we would be learning about. Even though the language was above them, they still understood the concept and were very engaged in the book.

Science is fun!

Review Date: 1999-05-23
This is a story about a boy who likes science. There is a real joy in science and the author illustrates that joy in the activities of Archibald. Archibald's mother is concerned that her son is so wrapped up in his reading and his way of looking at things, she sends him to camp to try to be a "normal kid." She wanted him to have a good time. But, Archibald shows his Mom and the other campers that science and "having a good time" can go together. This is a book that celebrates the joy of science and is something of a rarity in books for children of this age group. I highly recommend it and think that the comments made by the "Horn Book" above are a little too harsh. A few lines of the text may have some forced rhyming. But, that doesn't lessen the value of this book. The Horn reviewers probably didn't do well in their science courses in College but did well in poetry.

One of the best Lake Superior books

This is a must for anyone who loves the Lake Superior region.

Very well researched and written, the books begins with a series of articles on several themes pertinent to the Lake, such as the history of lumbering, mining, and the tales of the Native People.

Then in logical sequential fasion, we are led on a tour around the lake stopping at many interesting parks, monuments, towns, etc.

This is not so much a standard guide book as a historical and natural tour. Many current and archival photos are included.

There are perhaps a half dozen Lake Superior books I would own rather than borrow and this is definitely one of them.

An excellent guide

With a simple rhyming rhythm, and lots of different colors it's just perfect for my 19 month old. We like to read it right before nap or bedtime since it's short and has the pretty shiny foil. It keeps his attention and as a bonus the ending has an adorable Baby Strawberry going to bed too.

"Baby Strawberry's Rainbow Day" is a board-book from the new line of "baby" Strawberry Shortcake book releases. In this one, Baby Strawberry explores a rainbow of colors.

This book features five colors, in bright shiny foil. The colors are red, yellow, green, blue and purple. The overall illustrations and colors are a joy to look at. The text is simple, one sentence per page, but will teach kids about basic colors. In addition to Strawberry, Custard and Pupcake are also seen in this book.

TRUE AND ACCURATE ACCOUNT OF THE BATTLE

FOR THOSE, PARTICULARLY NON-AUSTRALIANS LOOKING FOR THE ESSENCE OF THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY'S FIGHTING QUALITIES AND THE CLOSE BOND OF MATESHIP DEVELOPED BY AUSTRALIANS IN THE FIELD - THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU. IT SHOWS THE GRASS-ROOTS FOOT SOLDIER'S ("DIGGER") VIEW OF THE BATTLE AS IT WAS FOUGHT IN 1966 AND HOW DIFFERENT THE WAR WAS FOR AUSTRALIANS AS OPPOSED TO AMERICAN TROOPS. IT SHOWS THE VERY DIFFERENT, TACTICS USED BY AUSTRALIANS, HAVING TO HAVE A PATROL AND DEFENSIVE CAPABILITY THAT IS VERSATILE AND SO NECESSARY FOR THE SMALLER UNIT ACTIVITIES CONDUCTED BY 1ATF IN VIETNAM, AND FOR MANOUVRES STILL CONDUCTED BY THE AUSTRALIAN ARMY TODAY (FOR WHICH THEY ARE SO FAMOUS AND RESPECTED) AS AN EX AUSTRALIAN SERVICEMAN I KNOW IT IS A TRUE ACCOUNT.

Australia's Rourke's Drift in Vietnam, a facinating read.
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 1999-05-25
A good book for those interested in a historical perspective of the Vietnam war and yet a book that provides an entertaining "ripping yarn". The author, Lex McAulay, is himself a Vietnam Veteran having completed two tours as an Australian Army Intelligence NCO, first with the First Royal Australian Battalion and later with the Australian Task Force in Nui Dat. The Battle of Long Tan saw the understrength Australian infantry coy, "Delta" Coy of the Sixth Royal Australian Regiment, walk into an enemy regimental-sized ambush. Later that evening 18 Australian soldiers lay dead surrounded by over 240 confirmed VC and NVA bodies along with numerous blood trails and body parts of an unknown number of other enemy dead. McAulay provides an interesting account of the battle firstly by supplying actual anecdotes drawn directly from the Australian survivors and secondly by giving us an insight into the enemy commander's decision making process. As the battle develops it becomes clear that the enemy are unaware and unable to clarify the dispositions and strength of the Australian unit it has contacted. McAulay's coverage swings from one side of the battle to the other. One minute we are with the Delta Company Commander, struggling to recover a cut off platoon, and the next we are in the enemy commander's mind attempting to identify and locate the centre of the Australian unit's position through a barrier of shrapnel. McAulay has obviously drawn upon his own knowledge of VC and NVA tactics and doctrine to provide something of an answer to a question still asked by Long Tan survivors. The actual intended purpose of the regimental sized force that Delta Coy stumbled into, is to this day a mystery. Theories have been put forward that the Vietnamese objective was to wipe out an Australian coy and make an example of them. However the ambush was set in place in a hasty fashion and if performed correctly would have annihilated the Australians. The other theory was that the regiment was in fact moving forward to assault the Australian Task Force HQ at Nui Dat and ran into Delta Coy unexpectedly. Regardless, accurate artillery fire from Australian, New Zealand and American batteries crashed down within 200 metres of Delta Coy, literally atomising entire waves of hundreds of assaulting VC and NVA soldiers in full view of the diggers as they frantically poured their small arms fire into the enemies ranks. All this in a rubber plantation, in a monsoon downpour, with one platoon cutoff and about to be overun. At the peak of the fighting, with ammo running low the Regimental Sergeant Major flies in, in an Australian Air Force Huey straight through the monsoon storm and begins throwing out ammo wrapped in blankets at tree top height directly into the coy position. Then just on dusk the cavalry literaly arrives in the form of a squadron of Australian M113 Armoured Personnel Carriers which arrive in the enemy's rear and begin to chew him up with 50 calibre fire, saving the day. The next morning the survivors of Delta Coy search the battlefield to recover their dead. They find their dead mates, conscripts and regulars alike, still propped up clutching their rifles facing their enemy. As one of the survivlors said, it was the most unnerving and yet moving scenes he had ever witnessed. 18 dead men, still in fire positions, fanned out in all round defence. The book reads like a good thriller, but it is a factual account of Delta Coy's stand at Long Tan. If you thought that only Americans fought hard in Vietnam then read this, and think again.
