I would like to e-mail the author - I read the book in 1981 and have started a PA (pills anonymous) meeting in the Chicago area. I would like her to know how she was a positive influence in my life. I would also like to thank her for her honesty and gripping tale.

Since Mary Ann is my sister, I may be at least _SLIGHTLY_ prejudiced. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed this book and feel that it's by far her best. Her other books give you information, and lots of it, but you don't get to see much of the person giving it. In "Rainbow," Mary Ann has the considerable courage to let you see inside her world, with all the ugly as well as beautiful things that are inside all of our lives. It took great courage to write this book. Nice going, Sis.

An open and honest look at alcohol and drug addiction

Review Date: 1999-06-07
For anyone who has been an alcholic or drug addict or those who are friends and relatives of people with this disease, this book is a wonderful source of wisdom from a recovering addict.

The book is divided into two parts:

The first part discusses Mary Ann's disease and how innocently it began, masking pain with pills and then masking the side effects of the pills with even more pills. As the reader, you keep wondering why she doesn't just stop taking them. In the second part you learn about how the disease of alcohol and drug addiction eliminates any rational thinking skills she or any other addict may have had before taking drugs and how friends and well-meaning people can actually enable the disease.

As the friend and relative of addicts, I found the book soothing and a valuable instrument I could share with recovering addicts and those that haven't yet admitted they have a problem. It's a delightful story of one woman's courage not only to fight her disease but also to share her pearls of wisdom with others heading down the same path.

A must read for parents, clergy, teenagers, atheletes, and those who deal with a lot of stress daily.

Thanks Mary Ann!

A Fading Rainbow captures life's ultimate meaning through the colourful life of Annabelle Castello Johnson Reed. She grew up in an impoverished hamlet in Trinidad, then circumstances take her to the affluent, urban life. She finds what she had dreamed of - fame, wealth and power. However, she never found truth, love and unconditional happiness which she once knew back in her old hometown. When she grew old and her beauty faded, she adandoned her affluent life and went in search of the life she left in a hamlet called Bristol village. The story is filled with intrigue and excitement and profound messages.

It's a wonderful story about life and its ironies. It says quite profoundly that the grass isn't always greener on the other side, and, wealth and status are not the attributes that make one happy. Annabelle found true happiness in the same mundane hamlet she had left some forty years before in favour of the imminent life. She lived her childhood dream, but it didn't bring her truth and love. She found the true meaning of life only after she returned to her old village. There a sad/sweet ending that will bring a tear to your eyes. It's a story that will leave you contemplating on life's ultimate goal.

A great book !! It's one of those that you can't put down till you've reached the end ! A tale set in the post-war days of Trinidad with focus on the rural areas of Rio claro and Mayaro. An intriguing web unfolds to readers as the author let the characters recall the past and then bring them back to the present. Each scene is captured vividly and great empathy felt as you ride through the emotions of trying to please others and do things against your will, heartbreaks, grief and being forever plagued by the 'what if' scenarios. The realisation that money did not bring Annabelle happiness but only the simple things in life such as love, truth and family - a worthy lesson to us all.

My daughter read each book with so much excitement that she could not wait to read what happened next. This is a wonderful writer that can keep a child so fascinated with her story telling. We cannot wait to read more stories from this author. So far, we have read all 10 books in this series. Again, great books!

My daughter discovered the Fairy Realm series at our local library. She immediately was captivated and insisted that I find all the other books and check them out so she could read them. Within a week she had read all ten books in the series. She loves them. I read one in the series and they are well written, the illustrations are wonderful and the stories immediately draw you in. These books are well worth the time to read and would make a good addition to any children's library.

In the eyes of my 7 year old, all 5 Fairy Realm books are awesome. We checked the first one out at the library. She read it and loved it. When she realized it was a series, we jumped at the chance to purchase the rest in order. She has read each one up to #5 and loved them all. She related to the character, loved the adventures and cannot wait to dive into #6. My daughter's an avid reader and loves adventure series. Emily Rodda does a great job writing and tells an intriguing story. It pleased me that though the books are very lively, they aren't too scary for younger readers.

I just love this book. There is only one caveat, and that's a sad poem about being a child of divorce, but, hey, that's reality and if it opens the mind of a kid whose parents are married, maybe not a bad thing.

Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers: A Collection of Family Poems by Mary Ann Hoberman is a specialized poetry book containing twenty-six different lyric and narrative poems all focusing on different aspects of families and their lives. The poems throughout the book are structured differently some structures include are: couplets, quatrains, and free verse. Each poem has different sound patterns, examples of sound pattern in some of the poems are: onomatopoeias, rhyme and assonance, and rhythm. All the poems describes an experience from a child's point of view to help the children gain meaning and understanding of different families. This book includes something that all different types of families can relate to. Marylin Hafner's illustrations provide pictures to help children gain a better understanding of the text and add comical entertainment to interest the children.

A humorous and sensitive book

Genuine characters juggle their big sisters, step-mothers, and cheek- pinching aunts in this collection of family-centered poems. While Fathers, Mothers, Sisters, Brothers entertains young readers with situational humor and sprightly rhyme, selections such as "Half-Whole-Step" and "When Annie Was Adopted" deviate from its lighthearted verse to celebrate and explore diversity: "I am a half-brother / I am a whole-brother / I am a step-brother / There's just one of me!" Although metaphor is sparse, Mary Ann Hoberman's utilization of natural meter and playful diction spawns vocalization of each line. Readers will smirk and reminisce as they hear, "A not-everyday jacket / That's-not-for-play-jacket / A do-as-I-say jacket." Aside from the different features and members of families, this collection reveals those situations common in many households, such as new births, shyness around extended family members, and jealousy among siblings. Varying tone and dynamic narratives encourage children to read this book as a whole, but inclusion of different family types provokes students to focus on certain poems to which they relate. Marylin Hafner's lively illustrations complement the multicultural slant of Hoberman's poetry, encompassing a kaleidoscope of individuals and lifestyles. Each colored-pencil drawing supplies glimpses into the action of each poem and drives readers to consider what happens next. Children ages four to eight will enjoy the book's smooth, fun language, its action-packed pictures, and its sensitivity to their own lives.

This is her best book in my opion!! It has something for everyone. Full of colorful characters that everyone can relate to with a no holding back choice tongue. Travel through experiences from a woman sick and tired of hearing her man's apologies to another woman's dilemma of watching her vietnam tortured boyfriend drop their children out the window. I think the beauty of this choreopoem is that every woman finds her little gold at the end of her own rainbow. Enjoy.

Crazy Visions in the Sky

Man, I love anything with crazy visions in the sky - particularly the first chapter of the Biblical book Ezekiel - but the vision in this book is a neat thing to read about too. I just don't get why the buffalo was referenced at the end. Must be a Native American custom to end all stories with some mentioning of a buffalo.

I'm sorry to say I still like non-sacred dogs more than sacred dogs, but I have a very good reason for doing so. Sacred dogs are much more expensive.

My grandfather had recently passed away and my younger cousin was very close to him. I never thought I would find such an excellent children's book on the important and loving relationships between Asian American grandparents and their grandchildren. Additionally, the storyline is simply and beautifully written, and the animation is of high quality.

I consider this a rare and priceless treasure that I hope will get passed on in generations to come.

The delicate relationship between the child and her grandfather is beautifully developed by the author, and the message that our differences -- age, language, etc. -- matter less than what we share is conveyed with subtlety. The glossary of Chinese words gives added insight into a different culture. The illustrations are good, though not as outstanding as the text. A real charmer!

THis book is intended for "imature audiences only",but is a great orientation to the publishing/printing industry. Many of us in the industry are inclined to give newcomers the micro details without the bigger picture. This book, in a very effective and simplistic way, takes a new employee through the overview of how a book is made. Often, reading this book prior to training allows for greater retention of more detailed facts learned during training. While the overview is excellent, the technology represented is very outdated. Many of the processes happen on computer now. I would love the publisher to do an updated version!

I still own my original copy, and writing is my biggest passion and greatest reward in life. Every child and adult should get their paws on this book and I hope it will always continue to inspire all of our future writers of the world.

My daughter loves this series of books - the biggest problem we have is that she won't stop after one chapter. She's 5, so we do most of the reading, she'll read a paragraph or two, but we do that's it for now. It won't be long before she'll be re-reading them herself. She and her sister love playing fairies now, it's been great for her developing her imagination and her creative play has flourished lately.

We started with book 1 of the Rainbow Fairies and are now on the Weather Fairies Series. I highly recommend these books.

This is the 6th book in the series of rainbow fairy books. My daughter (almost 6) absolutely loves these books and they are a great introduction to chapter books. She lines them up in order and anxiously awaits the arrival in the next ordered book of the series. It is a nice change for me to read something that entertains me too as I read to her. She delights in having them read to her and as her reading skills emerge, she will be able to enjoy them again when she can read to herself.
