Archie, charming as everReview Date: 2001-08-19
Ensuring that each contestant is a winner, the judges give out blue ribbons to everyone, creating categories on the fly, such as "cat with the longest whiskers," "friendliest fish," etc. Archie finally arrives, but an old woman shows up just as Archie is displaying his hasty last-second entry (a jar, containing a germ). Beside the old woman is Archie's cat. The old woman is given the blue ribbon for displaying the cat.
Archie displays good humor and grace. The old woman offers the blue ribbon to Archie, but he insists that she keep it. Archie and his friends all enjoy themselves.
Like most of Ezra Jack Keats' books, _Pet Show_ is populated with children and adults of several ethnicities, but primarily African-American. The book design is marvelous. Basically the book looks like _A Letter To Amy_ and _Whistle for Willie_.
My son and I read this one all the time. He's almost 2 1/2 years old, and while I expect that most children are enjoying this at age 4 and age 5, my son thoroughly loves it. When we reach the section where Archie is late for the pet show, he almost can't contain himself until he sees Archie's silhouette racing along, jar in hand, and he belts out "Here Goes Archie!"-- _Pet Show_ is a winner.

The Rainbow Connection offers something of value to everyone who has the pleasure of reading it, regardless of age or background. Ms. Carlino speaks to the importance of our spiritual needs and how we must attend to them if we are to be complete human beings. The message is clear: don't just read The Rainbow Connection, act on it. The author shows us how.

Pleasure CruiseReview Date: 2001-12-19
In a 13 part narrative that chronicles Karina's journey in as many trips to other consciousness with her mother as guide, we share her experience of pain in facing her mistakes. We share her longing for the love that seems to allude her as she discovers her own ways of alluding the happiness she seeks. We witness her growing acceptance, admiration and love of her mother. It is a metaphorical cruise through life's bitter and sweet discoveries, glimpsed through the prismed lens of The Rainbow Goddess. Not only a good read, this book is nourishing.
You won't be able to put this book down!Review Date: 2001-05-16

The story is about the Crystal Goddess opening new vibrational levels of consciousness for Karina. Guided by her pagan mother, Karina learns of a new reality within each color. She dreams and her awareness is stretched and circled as she seeks the prize at journey's end within the rainbow.
It is an exciting work, integrating enlightened poetry, and much more than fantasy fiction. Rainbow Goddess dives into the dangerous but rewarding worlds of soul and physical interaction. The book provies deep insight into the true reality of Self. And the reader can learn about and experience a metaphysical and physical facet for each color-even black and white.

A childhoold classic revisitedReview Date: 2008-06-02
It's the simple story of a young girl trying to cope with recently divorced parents and being a joint-custody kid.
Although 25 years later, it seems fairly innocent (lacking modern day, ugly child support arguments, custody battles, myspace pages, cell phones and such) it is still good reading.
Save it for children under 10, as older ones will be too jaded to take it seriously.

good in general - excellent for divorce/custody issuesReview Date: 1999-10-05
The story is about a girl whose parents are getting divorced and are sharing joint custody. She tries to hide the divorce from the people at school which is very difficult given her emotional state and the joint custody. She is hurt and embarrassed in addition to going through all the usual (pre?)teenage-angst and, as in all such books, must come to terms with her family's situation.
The story is true to the way I felt at the time which was very important because I felt like I was the only one feeling that way (I did know, in my head, that others went through this but that didn't effect how I felt, an important distinction). I'm _very_ disappointed to learn that it is out of print.
If you can get your hands on it - definitely read it. It was good just as a story and great as therapy!

Somewhere over the "Rainbow" Review Date: 2006-04-09
Set in various landscapes, like San Francisco, India and ancient Babylon, the book depicts the lives of people that are easily called outlaws, like skinheads, prostitutes, HIV-positive people and so on. What Vollman does with beauty for these creatures is to show that above all they are human beings -- no matter how much we don't agree with their choices. He doesn't take sides, but sympathize with them. The writer illuminates some dark corners of their souls, so that we can understand our very owns.
In his stories that deal with neo-nazis, for instance, Vollman paints a very conscious painting, exposing them as people that live, love, have a job and so on. The same happens in the most beautiful story of this book, called "Ladies and Red Lights", in which the writer tackles the lives of prostitutes, cops and their costumers. Vollman brings himself as a character and narrator in most tales, what gives him a closer approach to this universe.
He did extensively research, living with people who ended up being his characters, a listening to their stories. In the end, this device makes "The Rainbow Stories" some sort of literature verit?. This book certainly isn't for everyone -- some disturbing images and ideas may upset some readers --, but those who are open-minded enough to dive in this colorful world won't regret the trip.
