This book by Ezra Jack Keats was first published in 1972. Along with his other books, Peter's Chair, Jennie's Hat, Goggles!,and The Snowy Day again proves that a story with beautiful illustrations is timeless. The characters are real and endearing. This is a must have for your children's library.

Great children's book and what pictures!!

I liked this book because of its colorful illustrations that enliven the story. The stories that Ezra Jack Keats write are so good to use for children to relate to. I recomend his books to teachers to use in bibliotherapy and for just anyone to read. I also have read "Peter's Chair" and again just as in all his other books you find real life situations in relation to life. Then there's his wonderfull illustrations.

It's the day of the neighborhood pet show, and Archie plans to take his cat. But where IS the cat? Archie can't find it, so Peter, Roberto, and Susie reluctantly go to the pet show without him.

Ensuring that each contestant is a winner, the judges give out blue ribbons to everyone, creating categories on the fly, such as "cat with the longest whiskers," "friendliest fish," etc. Archie finally arrives, but an old woman shows up just as Archie is displaying his hasty last-second entry (a jar, containing a germ). Beside the old woman is Archie's cat. The old woman is given the blue ribbon for displaying the cat.

Archie displays good humor and grace. The old woman offers the blue ribbon to Archie, but he insists that she keep it. Archie and his friends all enjoy themselves.

Like most of Ezra Jack Keats' books, _Pet Show_ is populated with children and adults of several ethnicities, but primarily African-American. The book design is marvelous. Basically the book looks like _A Letter To Amy_ and _Whistle for Willie_.

My son and I read this one all the time. He's almost 2 1/2 years old, and while I expect that most children are enjoying this at age 4 and age 5, my son thoroughly loves it. When we reach the section where Archie is late for the pet show, he almost can't contain himself until he sees Archie's silhouette racing along, jar in hand, and he belts out "Here Goes Archie!"-- _Pet Show_ is a winner.

Poor Archie. In the previous EJK book "Hi Cat," a darn alley cat follows him home after wreaking havoc with his day. Now, in "Pet Show," Archie is ready to enter the contest with said cat -- but cat has vanished. Archie ultimately displays cleverness as well as kindness, a wonderful lesson for little ones. EJK's books are always visually gorgeous, with colors and textures that delight readers. But even the grownup who reads this book will appreciate clever little Archie and the reminder that sometimes, tough situations require a little ingenuity and a helping of grace.

Ms. Carlino provides an almost mystical insight into our most personal thoughts. Not only are Ms. Carlino's words inspirational, the author provides examples and tools that help the reader work through a process of self-understanding and self-improvement. The imagery provided by the seven colors of the rainbow serves to underscore the differences each of us have in measuring the importance of work, play, family, and God in our daily lives. At the same time, the rainbow underscores our common need to keep them all in balance if we are to live happy and productive lives. It is only through a merging of these colors that we are able to truly fulfilled.

The Rainbow Connection offers something of value to everyone who has the pleasure of reading it, regardless of age or background. Ms. Carlino speaks to the importance of our spiritual needs and how we must attend to them if we are to be complete human beings. The message is clear: don't just read The Rainbow Connection, act on it. The author shows us how.

This is a must read for anyone who cares enough about themself to want to grow healthy in mind and in body. The attentive reader will recognize the author as an immediate and caring friend.

Rainbow Goddess: A Journey Tale a highly recommended metaphysical novel by Cynthia C. Whitehouse and set in a world where reality is responsive to the molding of thoughts and reams. A young woman undertakes a journey on waves of light, following the guidance of her pagan mother and armed only with the strength of her own soul. A story of depth, meaning, and truly understanding the self, Rainbow Goddess sweeps the reader up in its journey of life-reflection from the beginning all the way through to the end.

Follow Karina through her 13 day journey to self awareness and encounter passion, love and doubt and arrive at forgiveness and healing. This is a story of discovery of self and rediscovery of a love believed lost. Through vivid, lyrical prose and brilliant imagery, Ms. Whitehouse takes us on a journey that challenges our notions of reality, enlarges our understanding of spirituality and entertains, entertains, entertains!

In a 13 part narrative that chronicles Karina's journey in as many trips to other consciousness with her mother as guide, we share her experience of pain in facing her mistakes. We share her longing for the love that seems to allude her as she discovers her own ways of alluding the happiness she seeks. We witness her growing acceptance, admiration and love of her mother. It is a metaphorical cruise through life's bitter and sweet discoveries, glimpsed through the prismed lens of The Rainbow Goddess. Not only a good read, this book is nourishing.

You won't be able to put this book down!

This is a must for summer reading lists! Readers are immediately pulled into the story by Karina, Momma and the mysticism that surrounds not only their relationship to each other, but to the relationship of what is seen and unseen. Readers will easily recognize the hope/need for change and the ability to make those things happen not only in the characters, but in themselves. This book is not only empowering, but takes the imagination on a magickal journey. Kudos to Ms. Whitehouse for a great read. This is a journey I want to take again!

Would you enjoy taking a sensual, magical journey through the color spectrum?
The story is about the Crystal Goddess opening new vibrational levels of consciousness for Karina. Guided by her pagan mother, Karina learns of a new reality within each color. She dreams and her awareness is stretched and circled as she seeks the prize at journey's end within the rainbow.
It is an exciting work, integrating enlightened poetry, and much more than fantasy fiction. Rainbow Goddess dives into the dangerous but rewarding worlds of soul and physical interaction. The book provies deep insight into the true reality of Self. And the reader can learn about and experience a metaphysical and physical facet for each color-even black and white.

I teach art so I like to order books that introduce or reinforce art concepts. This book introduces a few colors and tells how to make them, however there's not pattern in the colors the author has chosen. The story, however, is sweet and the illustrations are bright, happy and colorful. I would highly recommend it for personal reading with a child, but not instruction.

I am a Lutheran church librarian in Florida who bought this book for our church library. It is colorful and well-written. I like the feeling of neighborliness expressed in this book. So often we ignore our neighbors in our busy lives, but here, neighbors are seen as valuable, colorful people who have different talents and skills. A child loves art. A blind man loves music. The two share and appreciate one another's talents. How nice for children to read about brotherhood and togetherness. A lovely book which is simple but intriguing!

We have a blind member of our church and this book helps the kids in our congregation realize that people can have different traits, gifts and challenges, yet we all have the same feelings, hopes, dreams and wishes. Thank you to Maria Diaz Strom.

This is a beautiful book. The words and images are simple and strong. There is no sappiness or "political correctness" about these people. The story feels natural, it rings true in a beautiful, effortless manner. The characters are strong in themselves and there is no TV-movie sentimentality. This is great reading and looking for all ages.

I read this book to my son's first grade class and the kids loved it! The story and the art are vivid and captivating, but the best part was the discussion we had afterward. The kids had lots of ideas about how a blind person could experience color. It was a really special book to share. I highly recommend it.

I was SO happy to find this! I read this book when I was a child in the 80s, re-read it so many times, I wore it out.
It's the simple story of a young girl trying to cope with recently divorced parents and being a joint-custody kid.
Although 25 years later, it seems fairly innocent (lacking modern day, ugly child support arguments, custody battles, myspace pages, cell phones and such) it is still good reading.
Save it for children under 10, as older ones will be too jaded to take it seriously.

This was my favorite grade school book...

And my parents aren't divorced! I was an avid reader as a child, and I discovered this book right around 3rd/4th grade. I actually went through two copies because I wore the first one out. Aviva (the main character) is very relatable, and the story draws you in...makes you feel that there are other children going through the trials and tribualtions of growing up just as you are...and that everything will be O.K. If you're looking for an excellent read for a grade schooler, especially a girl, purchase this book. You won't regret it!

This was one of my favorite books when I was younger. I used to check it and its sequels out of the library at least once a month. Even though all the reviews will say the book is about divorce, it is really a story any young girl can identify with.

I read this book years ago when my parents got divorced and loved it. In fact, the reason I looked it up on Amazon.com was that I wanted to recommend it to someone (a librarian no less!) and couldn't remember the author.

The story is about a girl whose parents are getting divorced and are sharing joint custody. She tries to hide the divorce from the people at school which is very difficult given her emotional state and the joint custody. She is hurt and embarrassed in addition to going through all the usual (pre?)teenage-angst and, as in all such books, must come to terms with her family's situation.

The story is true to the way I felt at the time which was very important because I felt like I was the only one feeling that way (I did know, in my head, that others went through this but that didn't effect how I felt, an important distinction). I'm _very_ disappointed to learn that it is out of print.

If you can get your hands on it - definitely read it. It was good just as a story and great as therapy!

After using it several times, you literally can start to feel the shift of colors as you step thru each band he is describing....

This particular tape i enjoy using at the end of the day after i have worked long hours....

His voice is soothing, the music is beautiful, and unfortunately i usually end up asleep before the end of the tape because it sweeps me away.........

Somewhere over the "Rainbow"

William T. Vollman is one of the bravest writers in United States still working. He is not afraid of dealing with controversial issues, and he does so not be in the media, but because he has an urge to talk about lives that are forgotten, lives that the average citizen doesn't bother to learn about -- in other words, low lives. His collection of stories "The Rainbow Stories" goes deep into those lives with beauty and delicacy.

Set in various landscapes, like San Francisco, India and ancient Babylon, the book depicts the lives of people that are easily called outlaws, like skinheads, prostitutes, HIV-positive people and so on. What Vollman does with beauty for these creatures is to show that above all they are human beings -- no matter how much we don't agree with their choices. He doesn't take sides, but sympathize with them. The writer illuminates some dark corners of their souls, so that we can understand our very owns.

In his stories that deal with neo-nazis, for instance, Vollman paints a very conscious painting, exposing them as people that live, love, have a job and so on. The same happens in the most beautiful story of this book, called "Ladies and Red Lights", in which the writer tackles the lives of prostitutes, cops and their costumers. Vollman brings himself as a character and narrator in most tales, what gives him a closer approach to this universe.

He did extensively research, living with people who ended up being his characters, a listening to their stories. In the end, this device makes "The Rainbow Stories" some sort of literature verit?. This book certainly isn't for everyone -- some disturbing images and ideas may upset some readers --, but those who are open-minded enough to dive in this colorful world won't regret the trip.

Skillfully and imaginatively crafted

The Rainbow Stories is a versatile demonstration of Vollmann's writing gifts. Thirteen stories, each based on a color of the rainbow (plus white and black, and the whole spectrum together), are each carefully tinged with the chosen color without laboring the point. A combination of journalistic observation, well-imaged interpretations, and visionary fiction, these stories range from ancient Babylon to modern San Francisco. The stories successfully demonstrate Vollmann's skill in describing the deepest horrors of mankind, the cold tremors of physical or psychological isolation, and the constant tugs of love and desire. Vollmann's gifts of description and his ability to detail the thoughts of the darkest and farthest reaches of humanity is thrilling and sometimes frightening.

Reading Vollmann is like bumping into your girlfriend's mother as you exit the adult book store with a brown bag full of porn tucked under your arm. It's the shame of having secrets brought out into the light of day for others to gawk at, the shock of recognition, the pain that accomanpies knowledge. It's like being stared at....

"American fiction?" Not quite, I was there. In 1984 my girlfriend and I set of from VA to San Francisco CA looking for adventure. What we found was a world of decadence, violence, deviation, drugs and death that I feel lucky to have escaped alive from. William interviewed several of my roommates from my Tenderloin apt on Ellis Ave. Dickie Disgusting (AKA Frank Hutton) was an "Open High" school fiend of mine from "back east" that we hooked up with. He had gone out there to help start the notorious "SF Skins" that terrorized Height street. They were immortalized by "Camper Van Beethoven" when they were spotted bowling in the Height Street Bowling Alley. Boot Woman was also staying there with us. I knew Mark Dagger and a whole bunch of the characters in the book (and YES the sheep killing story is real, I have friends that did time over it). As crazy as the book is, the SF punk life was even more twisted than one can imagine but Vollman did a great job getting into the seedy world that was ours back then and capturing it in ink. I only hope that there are other survivors like myself back from then, until (or if) I see my old friends again, I can always pick up this book and remember them in their 2os with all their craziness and dysfunction. I will only five it 4 stars maily because it brought back some really painful memories too and I got a little bummed out after reading about the fate of one of the characters. These feelings caused me to have to put the book down for a while. Thank you William, it was a both a pleasure and a gift...

Rainbows in The Fountain, tells the story of Nicholas Mancini's childhood in Italy of the 1940's-1950's, from the time of the German occupation of his village, to his emigration to a small town in Connecticut. It is the story of coming of age in post war Italy, of Mr. Mancini's three mothers, the loving relationships with his grandparents and his many adventures in a small Italian village. I laughed with the author and I cried with the author as I read his book and experienced a wide array of emotions. The writing itself is realistic and the occasional use of Italian adds to the authenticity of the text.
