Review Date: 2003-11-10
Alison Leigh Powers, an eleven year old middle school student, wants to buy a horse. To make money to fund her desire, she offers to become her mothers assistant in cataloguing miniature books. In her efforts to sort them Alison learns that miniature books, all less than three inches, are fascinating. As Alison discovers more about the books, she finds herself looking forward to working with them, and getting to know the book owners.

When Mrs. Powers notices that a book she has already made notations on comes up missing, she is horrified. Alison finds out that more than one book is gone, and is determined to find the person responsible for putting her and her moms jobs in jeopardy. As she looks for clues, she hates to point the finger at any of her new friends, but knows the books must be found. When Alison finds out who the culprit is, will she tell on him, or find a way to get him to return the books?

In The Mystery of the Missing Miniature Books, Alison, a wonderful main character with an inquisitive mind helps bring the reader to the right conclusions as she searches for clues. Her insight to finding out the hidden secrets makes for a wonderful story about an eleven year old sleuth. This reviewer, having grown up on Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys, fell in love with a new generation of mysteries with Ms. Kinmans stories.

The Mystery of the Missing Miniature Books comes packed with facts that will make the reader think about books, boxes, and any other items they may have considered collecting. Alison learns not only about work ethics, but about the cost of a horse, and the time needed for upkeep. This novel is full of adventure and learning for any middle reader. Ms. Kinman has created the perfect mystery for both girls and boys with her series about Alison Leigh Powers, and this reviewer would recommend them as a gift to any child who enjoys books!

Berkley psychology professor Nigel Jameson is a late attendee at the Sequoiacon Science Fiction Convention, but he is not there as a fan. Instead, the real life vampire (oxymoron) seeks to gain possession of graphic photos that could expose and endanger his race to the prejudices of humans. Convention participant Keith Brewster swears he will prove that an alien creature exists on earth.

Nigel enlists the aid of another attendee thirty something librarian Sherri Hudson, who though she is attracted to him, remains reluctant to break and enter someone else's room to steal the pictures. However, the duo accomplishes his mission only for him to realize from the photos that his sister is in deep trouble. Working together to rescue Laura, Sherri and Nigel fall in love even as she learns the truth about her partner.

SEALED IN BLOOD is a powerful vampire romance that works on several levels besides the obvious supernatural boy and human girl falling in love. The story line is fast-paced as most fans will read in one sitting. The convention details are a delightful description of chaotic fun and the suspense thriller aspects blend quite nicely with the horror and romance ingredients. Sherri is the ideal mix of innocence, awe, and skeptic with an emphasis on the latter. Though Nigel is too perfect an upright moral individual, Margaret L. Carter provides a powerful novel that sub-genre readers will enjoy.

Rumors that a second rate reporter has obtained authentic pictures of a demon draws professor Nigel Jameson to a science fiction convention. Nigel convinces another convention guest, Sherri Hudson, to aid in his plan to steal the pictures and negatives before they become public. Unfortunately, someone else wants those pictures as well. After Nigel successful obtains them and learns the "demon" is his vampire sister, someone else slips into the reporter's room and leaves him dead.

Several days after the convention, Sherri receives a threatening phone call demanding the pictures. Soon she finds herself swept away on a supernatural adventure to find Nigel's sister Laura. While Nigel protests the possibility of a long-term relationship, neither can resist their shared allure, plunging them into a passionate affair.

Margaret Carter maintains the seductive allure of vampire legend yet lends vampires their own unique heritage in SEALED IN BLOOD. Vampires in Carter's world have their own evolutionarily and cultural background coexisting with humanity. One is born a vampire, rather than transformed, as the bitterly disappointed antagonist learns. Vampires earn livings and live among humans, though they maintain a mild sensitivity to the sun. In addition, Carter's understanding fandom and cons lends the novel an authentic background complete with filk music and fanaticism. An intricately woven novel that blends romance, adventure, suspense and the supernatural, SEALED IN BLOOD comes highly recommended.

As the main character is trying to find pictures of a winged creature and also find out what has happened to his sister you also find out that vampires are not undead but a whole different race. And that he must get those pictures and his sister back before their kind are discovered.
He inlisted the help of Sherri Hudson a human and she soon begins to discovers there are vampires and what they are and are not. Also that the attractions between the vampires and humans isnt as much sexual as it is an addiction.
And this is not to say that this isnt just as powerful nor is this any less pleasurable for either race. I think any vampire lover has to give this read a chance and will be pleasently surprise.

SIGNATURE FOR SUCCESS is a joy to read. The writing style is very approachable. The content is layed out in a well though out manner which gives a the reader an excellent top level picture to what goes into handwriting analysis. I came away with a thorough understanding of what handwriting analysis can and cannot reveal about a person's character.

Like many of the other readers, I enjoy the part of the book that analyzes famous personalities' handwriting. Since many of us are familiar with the personalities it is fun to see them subject to such analysis and that the traits present in their handwriting seem to manifest themselves in well known personality traits of these individuals.

I recommend this book highlh!

I had the pleasure of meeting Arlyn Imberman a year ago at which time I showed her the writing of someone I had just started dating. She gave me quite a bit of insight into this person -- including some traits that she thought could be frustrating and disappointing to me. Needless to say, within six months, I began to see some of these personality flaws at play and the relationship ended. Having been made aware of these hidden tendencies, I was far more prepared for the potential problems that ensued. When I heard about Arlyn's book, I rushed to buy and read it so that I could learn more about handwriting and what it reveals. SIGNATURE FOR SUCCESS is a fascinating and entertaining book that makes the study of handwriting analysis easily understandable and accessible to anyone. What a wonderful tool for gaining insight into the people in our lives, as well as ourselves! I highly recommend this book.

SIGNATURE FOR SUCCESS conveys a whole new level of passion and excitement for handwriting analysis by showing samples from famous people in the most interesting ways. For example, samples of celebrity handwriting are included in sections where readers are asked to choose which person they'd select for job applicants, friends, and lovers... and are then let in on the secret about which famous people those handwriting samples really belong to. Arlyn also shares some real-life samples of handwriting she's received, along with her answers to readers' questions based on her analysis of each handwriting sample.

A wide variety of personality traits are described and displayed that show up in handwriting, including qualities like: introvert/extrovert, honesty/dishonesty, patience/impatience, easy-going/angry. Once you've learned the basics about how to spot warning signs in handwriting, it's amazingly simple to find out a great deal of information.

SIGNATURE FOR SUCCESS is an inspirational gem that is fun to read on many levels: pure entertainment, thought-provoking insights, and self-improvement. I give this book my highest recommendation!

Derived some useful advice on how to handle the boss, based upon his handwriting.

I have been to several parks and this guide pointed out some new things to see. The book features good background on the battles and features excellent directions and maps. The book also has good information on the parks and surrounding areas pertaining to if their is a fee to get into the park, nearby hotels/attractions, etc. Good guide and good background info.

The proof of a guidebook is its use. I took this (along with a number of others) on our trip to the South last year. The others stayed in the rental car's trunk and we used this one almost exclusively. Not as in depth as some, but the directions were simple to follow and we appreciated the background information. One caveat -- call first if you absolutely have to eat at one of the recommended restaurants. We found the Kennesaw House in Marietta out of business. (Certainly not the fault of the publisher!) We also enjoyed armchair tours of the sites we didn't make it to.

I have been to many Civil War battlefields on the east coast of the U.S. and this book is highly valuable to me in my touring and researching Civil War Battlefields. The book is coauthored by two scholarly experts on the Civil War, Jay Wertz and Edwin C. Bearss who give excellent summaries to each battle that was fought during the Civil War, but what makes this book especially valuable is the current hotels, bookstores, restaurants and other points of interest near or on the battlefields that are listed. Another worthy thing that the guide has is it's listing of what each battlefiled park has for the visitor such as restrooms, picnic facilities, paths, guided tours, and museums, which are invaluable to the experience. This is a MUST have to anyone who is interested on seeing the great battlefields of Gettysburg, Chickamauga, Shiloh, New Market, etc, firsthand.

Timeless Tales review

By TT reviewer Teresa Bushek

Move over, Jackie Collins. There is a new star in the world of suspenseful stories about Hollywood. Denise Tyrrell dives headfirst into the mysterious, fascinating, and sometimes seedy world of the Hollywood film and television industry with her new novel titled "Star Quality".

Isabel Taylor, a writer known to friends as Izzy, has been trying for eight long years to "break in" to show business. With a mounting stack of bills and rent due in under a week, she accepts a position with the Corporate Special Projects division of Mirabelle Studios.

Before long, Izzy realizes the job is not what she expected.

After a particularly stressful day, a co-worker by the name of Judy Ross offers friendship and a "long, cool one". At the bar, Judy introduces her to a man Izzy describes as a "repulsive little man", who is none other than Arthur Franco.

Arthur Franco's claim to Executive Producer fame is the long running, wildly popular game show "Bingo Fever".

During a drugged stupor from yet another bout of plastic surgery, his mistress, the show's hostess Valentine Hart (yes, she is as cheesy as her name suggests), demands Franco produce a movie, in which she will star in the leading role. As Franco struggles to find funding for the movie, Judy Ross arranges financing from a wealthy businessman, Carlos Luna, in exchange for an associate producer's credit in the movie.

Whenever situations get tough, Izzy finds her friend Judy willing to dispense pearls of wisdom about surviving the Hollywood scene. But is Judy really her friend, or is she setting up Izzy while looking out for her own interests?

Ms. Tyrrell kept this reader on the edge of her seat with intense, fast-paced plot twists and turns. Vivid character descriptions lift the story's cast off the pages, and the author's sense of satirical humor shines through with tongue-in-cheek dialogue and analogies that are delightfully funny. Chock-full of insinuated sex, drug use, backstabbing friendships, and people who will do anything for money and titles, the story is a fast-paced, enjoyable read.

"Star Quality" will make readers wonder about what really goes on behind the scenes in real Hollywood television and movie production.

This book is a wickedly cynical, quick and fun read. Denise Tyrrell has obviously been around Hollywood and seems to write from personal, first-hand experience. The book should be read by everyone who likes to laugh, enjoys a mystery, loves gossip, and understands Hollywood's superficiality. It makes the reader think about the important things in life: integrity and morality. I enjoyed it from cover to cover and look forward to a sequel.

Denise Tyrrell has created what must surely be an insider's view of Hollywood, with a cast of fascinating characters. From her spunky protagonist Izzy to the creepy game show producer Arthur Franco, they are interesting, original people. You may have suspected that show business was like this, and now you'll believe it. Vivid settings, gripping plot, some laugh-out-loud moments, and a satisfying ending. This book kept me turning pages to find out "what happens next".

Denise Tyrrell has used her insider's knowledge of the Hollywood cesspool to craft a fine first novel. The book is well-written, fast-paced, and grabs your attention from beginning to end. One wonders if some of the characters are actually based on real people. But, surely no one in a position of power in Hollywood could be as vile as some of the characters in this book. Right?!?

This book provides clear, easy to use strategies for teaching and communicating with children on the autism spectrum. The author's contend that behavioral problems exhibited by children with autism are most often the result of frustration that comes from their inability to communicate effectively. Behavioral problems can be successfuly addressed by focusing on what the child is trying to communicate. Rationale for the strategies suggested is provided. I recommend this book for educators and parents.

There are so many books on autism and not all are applicable to our family's situation. I tend to read a library copy before purchasing. When it came time to return this book, I decided that this was one for our personal library. It's easy to read and I will refer to it over and over. Methods are easy to understand and implement. As a parent of an autistic child, it's one of the few books I've felt that will be invaluable.

This is the best book to own if you are working with a child with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder(ASD). It is amazing how much the editors fit into this little book. The overall philosophy of the book is towards an eclectic approach to ASD. It presents many different ideas from different people, all of which could be added to a program, method, approach for a particular child. If you are dogmatic about one method, this is not the book for you. The book starts out with several chapters looking into what we know about autism, a Temple Grandin chapter on what it is like to have autism and a Charles Hart chapter on what parents want (required reading for educators!). Then there are chapters on enhancing communication in nonverbal children, echolalic, and verbal children. These chapter are by Prizant, Rydell, Twachtman . Then there are a bunch of chapters on strategies for social stuff. Carol Gray wrote one chapter on social stories. This book is readable, full of ideas. I hope the authors plan to keep the book fresh with a new edition in a few years. As a parent of a child with ASD, I own two copies, and lend out the second to others who work with my son.

It is very easy to read and deals with a variety of different methods that can be used to deal with just about any level on the autistic spectrum. As a speech therapist working with variety of children with autism, I continually return to this resource to help plan my assessments and intervention. It is an excellent resource that addresses communication, play, pragmatics, parent desires, and self-control at a variety of levels. The chapters that deal with specific areas, such as enhancing social communicative interactions, often provide you with the necessary paperwork for assessment and/or intervention in the appendix. This is a must buy book! I would highly recommend this book to anyone working with children with autism.

After torture as a child and not knowing any nurturing outside of cruelty, Prince Conar of Serenia is loved and returns that deepest of feeling to his wife, Princess Anya "Liza" Elizabeth. Before meeting and falling love with Conar, Liza was a member of the Daughters of the Sea. Together they are a formidable team dedicated to the destruction of the Brotherhood of the Domination.

Conar's twin brother Galen wants his sibling dead and Liza by his side. The Brotherhood of the Domination evil sorcerer Kaileel Tohre sees Galen as a pawn to use to regain control of Conar, as he once had when he subjected the lad to his abusive hegemony. He plans to lure Conar back to the Domination's Great Abbey where he ruled supreme over Conar the child. Liza will serve as bait for Conar will risk his life and his freedom to keep her safe even if it means completing the Rite of Passage to become "One of the Chosen" with the powers of the White and the Black Paths.

The second tale in the "WindLegends" saga is a fantastic fantasy that as with the first tale, WINDKEEPER, the story line is character driven with an intriguing triangle. Liza and Kaileel "compete" for the "affection" of Conar while Galen wants him dead as he covets his sibling's relationships with the two of them. It is the love-hate that Kaileel and the hate that Galen bring to the plot that turns WINDSEEKER into a unique fabulous tale that can stand alone, but it would behoove the audience to start with the excellent WINDKEEPER to understand the fab four even better.

WINDSEEKER, by Charlotte Boyett-Compo, the latest installment in the Wind Legend Saga, continuing the great love affair between Prince Conar McGregor and his wife Liza, in addition to the battle against the evil of the Dominion, a sect of evil determined to conquer mankind.

Conar holds a long denied appointment with destiny. As a child, Conar fell victim to the Brotherhood of the Domination, those who would use his throne to serve their needs. In WINDSEEKER, the Dominion uses his brother Galen and wife Liza to lure Conar into their evil clutches, intending to complete the rites begun when Conar was a boy. In those early days, Conar was victim of the evil priest's desires and lusts. When he came home to his father's palace, his spirit was broken, he was ashamed to live, and tried to commit suicide. Nevertheless, the much-scarred boy survived to become a devoted, loving man and future king.

No man goes to the Great Abbey unless he seeks the Rites of Passage into the Order of Dominion, but when Dominion kidnaps Liza with Galen's aid, Conar risks his very soul to rescue her. Conar knows that the Dominion may allow him to go back to to his father's kingdom, even sit upon the throne of his homeland, but They would rule him; They would control who and what he was. He also knew the Dominion might even allow him to keep Liza at his side, but it won't matter. After the Rites of Passage, he will be One of Them, and Liza would be lost to him forever. The Dominion strives to posses Conar because of his special gifts; that is, he will have the combined power of The White and The Black Paths.

Once again Boyett-Compo weaves a fascinating tale of love, betrayal and passion; one that holds the reader rapt, praying for a glorious hero's survival and mourning the damage inflicted by evil. As Boyett-Compo's Wind Legends saga continues to develop its mythos, the extraordinary power of the tale leaves the reader enthralled, appalled, and desperate for more. Combining the Brotherhood of the Dominion with its counter-group, the Sisters of the Multitude, Boyett-Compo delivers richly varied characters of depth and power. I for one look forward to learning more of the mysterious sisters and of the gifts Liza keeps hidden. Hurry, Charlie, I can't wait for book three! Very highly recommended.

Prince Conar McGregor and his wife, Princess Anya "Liza" Elizabeth, were still deep in love. Conar and his father, King Gerren, ruled the Serenia region of the world. Liza was part of the Multitude, one of the Daughters of the Sea. Few knew that, of course. She was more well known for her ability with a crossbow. Conar and Liza were dedicated in their quest to destroy the Brotherhood of the Domination.

Conar's evil twin, Galen, wanted Conar dead and Liza by his side. Knowing this, the Domination planned to use Galen as a way to force Conar into returning to the Great Abbey of the Domination - from where he had escaped just before the age of thirteen.

The sorcerer known as Kaileel Tohre had always had a dark fascination with Conar. He wanted Conar the same way Liza did, as mate. To save Liza, Conar would return to the Domination and complete the Rite of Passage to become "One of the Chosen". Then he would go through the Final Rite of Consecration. If Conar lived through it, he would BE "The Chosen One of the Chosen"! Conar would possess the combined power of the White and the Black Paths.

The battle between good and evil continues!

***** RATED R for dark fantasy scenes and violence. No one under the age of 17 should read this series! Now that I have stated that, if you like your fantasy novels to be "anything goes", then this author should be on the top of your Favorites list. I never knew what would happen next and often it was the worst thing possible. It kept my on the edge of my seat from the beginning until the end and hungry for the next book! True Dark Fantasy gets no better than this! *****

I received this book in just a few days after I ordered it and it was in stellar condition. I haven't received anything from or through Amazon yet that wasn't in good condition, as stated in the advertisement of the product. One book I purchased came from an obvious heavy smoker, and when I opened the envelope, the smoke was overwhelming. After immediately airing out the book, I've had no problem with it. I love using Amazon because it saves me bundles of money I can spend on other things - like more products! Good job, Amazon, and all its sellers!

I just bought this latest edition. It doesn't have as many listings as one of the other well-known directories, but the over 1,700 listings it does have are the most extensive I've seen anywhere. They give you the writer's guidelines, what publishers and editors are looking for and what's expected if you want to make a sale. Some of the listings are over two pages long and these are big pages folks. There's a ton of info here that a writer needs, stuff you won't easily find elsewhere. It's a great book of writer's guidelines and I recommend it.

Makes being a believer easier

Unfortunately, I was born a skeptic and a hard headed realist. As much as I wanted to believe in God and felt I was a spiritual person, my own brain/personality or whatever was holding me back. Maybe I wanted more proof. Explanations I'd read and what I'd been told in Church seemed fairly true, but it had never been spelled out in a way I could totally comprehend and relate to. Luckily, I stumbled on this book, and things just finally jelled for me . . . mainly in the last chapter on God, creation, and physics. That's why I bought the book. Mr. Denny's thoughts and explanations on creation, and the physics behind it, and all the syncronicities in the universe helped me understand and "believe" in the way I wanted to. I can finally perceive God as the Creator as well as understanding the Big Bang and how it is perceived to be engineered by the Creator. Anyhow, it has to be read to be understood, and I can't do it any justice, other than to say it's been invaluable to me.

If you have friends who like to read non-fiction then they will love this. These questions tackle issues that we all deal with but have probably never taken the time to answer adequately for ourselves. The answers are not just opinions, but are well-reasoned, well-documented, practical ideas that can be used in our everyday lives. Mr. Denney's research and insight has saved us all many hours of searching for answers that we never seem to have time to find. I highly recommend this book. It is an interesting read and you will love the stories.

Chance of a Lifetime is Amy's Leigh's first novel, and what a treat it is! It's humorous, heartwarming, and the characters practically leap off the page they're so real-to-life. Ms. Leigh does an excellent job of creating regional flavor and dialogue, and the ending sent me rushing for my hankie. This is definitely a romance author you'll want to keep an eye on!

Amy Leigh's talent really shines in this warm and witty book. I love how her non-traditional heroine and her sexy-as-all-get-out hero make their way down the bumpy road to love. From the moment he crashes into her tractor to the last lingering kiss, these two are a wonderful couple.

I also really enjoyed Ms. Leigh's vivid use of language. She creates images that make the story really come to life. I look forward to more stories from her.

Don't miss Chance of a Lifetime. It's a wonderful book.
