I stayed up until 10:30pm the night I got the book and had read to page 110! I finished it the next morning! This is the fastest I've ever read a book because it was so exciting I couldn't stop! So if you want to go to bed on time tonight don't buy this! BTW there isn't any romance in this story. I'm in 6th grade.

A fabulous story for young readers. My 9 yr old son picked up this book when he needed to read a mystery for a school book report. He flew through this book and loved it! I read it and thoroughly enjoyed it as well. There are many surprising twists that unfold and keep the reader wondering what is next. Billy is a great character with courage and strong values. We hope to see him again with Buddy and his friends in future adventures.

Contains the tragedy of Ireland, and also it's magic

Maurice Walsh was born in Ballydonoghue, County Kerry, Ireland on May 2, 1879. After years in the civil service, he began writing, and in 1923 he published his most famous novel, The Key Above The Door. However, in America, he is most famous for his short story, The Quiet Man, which was later lengthened into a feature film starring John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.

This book contains five short stories (six, if you include the prelude, which is an integral part of the overarching story), which can easily be read separately, but together form an interlocking story. It is the story of a group of young people in County Kerry, Ireland, fighting against the British during the final years of the Irish war for independence. And, of their later years, as they try to put their lives back together after all that they have done.

The Prologue tells the story of Nuala Kierley, who was sent to Dublin to seduce a British intelligence officer into revealing the identity of an Irish turncoat - how could have ever known that the turncoat was her own husband.

Then Came The Captain's Daughter tells the story of Owen Jordan, an Irish-American doctor whose work with Sinn Fein has led him into many situations where he had to suppress many feelings of humanity, but when he is set to guard a captured Scottish Captain and his sister, he begins to see things in a new light.

In Over The Boarder, we see Sean Glynn reduced to a shadow of himself after the war - haunted by what he did to Nuala Kierley. Who can help to set Sean right and keep him alive?

The Quiet Man tells the story of Paddy Bawn Enright, who spent years boxing in America, and came back to Ireland to kill for independence. And now, all that he wants is peace, but for Paddy Bawn there is still one more battle that he must fight.

In The Red Girl, Owen Jordan's friend, Art O'Connor has come over to visit the land that his friend talks about so often. But, when he see the famous Red Girl, it leads him to trouble...and possibly mortal peril.

And finally Bad Town Dublin tells the story of Major Archibald MacDonald, retired from his service with the British Army, and his discovery of Nuala Kierley. Just what does she need, and what can Archie MacDonald do for one so badly hurt in the War?

Overall, I found these stories to be very moving. They contain adventure, and romance, and suspense. They contain the tragedy of Ireland, and also it's magic. If you want to really get a feel for 1920s Ireland, then I can't suggest anything more than getting this book! I highly recommend it.

I was happy to find this book republished after years of searching for out-of-print copies. Every story is connected; every story gives a different point of view. Pick up this book and you will become enthralled with the stories of the men and women who lived, loved, and fought during the early years of Ireland's fight for independence. While I realize the book is a work of fiction, I found myself, nevertheless, rooting for each person as he or she struggled with the problems the author put before each of them: alcohol, honesty, familial obligations, moral conscience, the love of country. If you like to read of adventure with your romance(or vice versa), these stories are for you. The cover doesn't do the book justice. The stories are so much more than just John Wayne as "The Quiet Man". At the end of the book I found myself wishing that the author had written another collection of stories continuing the saga of this era and these people.

These tales are told in a manner Irish tales are meant to be told. The lyrical manner and quiet truth of its telling are a rich and delicious read. From the drama of the Black and Tan War to the romance of an Irish summers evening, Maurice Walsh gets straight into your head. Irish wit never underestimates your intelligence, and this book never does either. Hints and fleeting references always come back to haunt you, and the way each of these short stories seamlessly integrate, you will find yourself smiling in admiration. The Quiet Man really captures the flavor of the time, the idealism of the Irish Republic, the heroism of its defense and the realism of hard choices made for that idealism. This is storytelling at its Celtic best, you will not be dissapointed...

"The Quiet Man" story first appeared in the 11 February 1933 Saturday Evening Post. John Ford read it that year, and obtained the film rights in 1936.

Author Maurice Walsh had finished four interconnected stories (tentatively titled "Green Rushes") about the IRA and the Black & Tans in 1920s Ireland. He changed names and made minor additions to The Quiet Man to fit it into Green Rushes (Shawn Kelvin became Paddy Bawn Enright, Big Liam O'Grady became Red Will O'Danaher). The current book (minus the Prologue) mirrors Green Rushes, originally published in 1936.

I love the movie, but the book reveals more of the REAL Ireland. Maurice Walsh captures the spirit of the country and her rural folk. His writing transports the reader to Erin with poetic language and unforgettable characters.

For additional history, see "The Complete Guide to the Quiet Man" by Des MacHale. Walsh wrote more about Hugh Forbes in "The Small Dark Man", available used.

Dickens's best Christmas novel
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-09
Sadly, this Christmas novella is overshadowed (as are the other four) by A Christmas Carol -- which is, no question, a classic.

But I found this book a worthy equal, if not a bit better than Carol, in that the characters are a little more fleshed out, the movement of the story has darker and therefore more dramatic flourishes - while at the same time the comic characters are more complete and take a more central place in the plot. And the `message' is a bit less obvious.

The ghost of the title is far more sinister than Marley and Christmas Future combined!

Anarchist nightmare

Review Date: 2006-06-02
For a book that's only about a hundred pages long, "The Man Who Was Thursday" is pretty packed.

G.K. Chesterton's classic novella tackles anarchy, social order, God, peace, war, religion, human nature, and a few dozen other weight concepts. And somehow he manages to mash it all together into a delightful satire, full of tongue-in-cheek commentary that is still relevant today.

As the book opens, Gabriel Symes is debating with a soapbox anarchist. The two men impress each other enough that the anarchist introduces Symes to a seven-man council of anarchists, all named after days of the week. In short order, they elect Symes their newest member -- Thursday.

But they don't know that he's also been recruited by an anti-anarchy organization. And soon Symes finds out that he's not the only person on the council who is not what he seems. There are other spies and double-agents, working for the same cause. But who -- and what -- is the jovial, powerful Mr. Sunday, the head of the organization?

Hot air balloons, elaborate disguises, duels and police chases -- Chesterton certainly knew how to keep this novel interesting. Though written almost a century ago, "The Man Who Was Thursday" still feels very fresh. That's partly because of Chesterton's cheery writing... and partly because it's such an intelligent book.

He doesn't avoid some timeless topics that make some people squirm. Humanity (good and bad), anarchy, religion and its place in human nature, and creation versus destruction all get tackled here -- disguised as a comic police investigation. And unlike most satires, it isn't dated; the topics are reflections of humanity and religion, so they're as relevant now as they were in 1908.

But the story isn't pedantic or boring; Chesterton keeps things lively by having his characters act like real people, rather than mouthpieces. From Symes to the Colonel to the mysterious Sunday himself, they all have a sort of friendly, energetic quality. "We're all spies! Come and have a drink!" one of the characters announces cheerfully near the end.

And of course, once the madcap police investigations are finished, there's still a mystery. Who is Sunday? What are his goals? And for that matter, WHAT is Sunday -- genius, force of nature, villain or god? The answer is a bit of a surprise, and as a reflection of Chesterton's beliefs, it's a delicate, intelligent piece of work.

"The Man Who Was Thursday" is a wacky little satire that will both amuse and educate you. Not bad for a book often subtitled "A Nightmare."

The voyeur finds it necessary to look rather than to do, and the reader of casebooks may similarly be tempted to peek at the secrets of others solely for the purpose of reassuring himself about his own superior stability. If this is to be the fate of this effort, then I will have failed to achieve my original goals. This book was intended to make more familiar and less mysterious the kinds of disorder to which all human lives are subject to a greater or lesser degree. In these cases are you, me, everyone. They do not show sickness of a biological sort; they demonstrate how the normal problems of living can escalate beyond recognition. This is an account of the hidden selves of a number of people whose problems and inappropriate behavor led them to seek or need assistance in being productive participants in our society. Psychotherapy is one means of restoring order where chaos has come to prevail but it is only one of many means and it is still an imperfect tool. People have reorganized themselves without profesional help since time began and there is little reason to believe that self-help wll not always be the most vital factor in adjustment. Psychotherapists are needed as much to organize the resources of those closest to the victim of disorder as they are to restore psychological order to the sufferer himself.

An interesting and entertaining story

Shawn Kelvin, a small but sturdy young man, has returned from America to the home in Ireland that he left behind 15 years earlier. But much has changed in those 15 years. Big Liam O'Grady now owns the farm that had belonged to the Kelvins, and Shawn himself has quieted much, after his time with the furnaces of Pittsburgh, and his time in the ring. But after Shawn marries Big Liam's sister, Ellen O'Grady, he soon finds that a confrontation between himself and Big Liam is probably unavoidable.

I must say that I really enjoyed this story. I love the 1952 movie, the Quiet Man, and was interested to see what extra I could learn from reading the story that the movie was based on. Well, perhaps I didn't learn much (the movie expanded greatly on the story, and really left nothing behind), but it was nonetheless a great read. I loved the characters, and the story, and how the author moved the story along to its exciting conclusion.

Maurice Walsh (1879-1964) was a great Irish author, and this book really does show off his wonderful talents. Whether or not you are a fan of the old John Wayne movie, the Quiet Man, you will love this interesting and entertaining story. I give it my highest recommendations!
