This is by far one of the best, if not the best, work that I have ever read on the subject of the Zulu War. This book gives you a true insiders view to this terrible and costly war. You can feel the pain of the hot sun at Rourke's Drift, and almost hear the chant of the fierce and proud Zulu warriors at Isandlwana. There are period pictures and historical battle facts that add to the enjoyment. A great book. A must read for the serious British Military researcher

A Superb Resource and a Good Read

A special edition from BYU which provides multidisciplinary perspectives on The Magic Flute with some well-chosen and beautiful illustrations.

The book begins with a Preface, a chronology of Mozart and his times, and three introductory essays, including Burton's "Mormons, Opera, and Mozart." After that it expands and covers some very interesting turf, with a dozen more essays organized under the categories of Themes, Characters, and Reception. I'm most enamored of an essay that explores Bergman's Magic Flute film and am a bit less drawn into material that explicates the opera's sometimes ponderous Mason symbolism and 18th century Europe's use of Egyptian motifs and ideas.

This version of Cakes for the Queen Of Heaven is an excellent presentation of the weeks long curriculum offered in UU churches. It's a shame for it to be out of print. Shirley, consider Print On Demand. Some publishers will publish out of print books free.

Stained Glass Candleholders for the Home Hobbyist
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-15
This is a very complete, step-by-step, instruction book, for the home hobbyist who likes to venture into fairly simple projects which can produce remarkable results. The materials and methods
to assemble these attractive glass candle holders are very well documented, and the process is illustrated with an abundance of high quality photographs. After the first project is completed, your imagination is the only thing you need to expand the process to produce works of art that are notable to anyone who views them. If you are looking for a project that can be expanded into a marketable home-based business, this is the book for you!

MARY STUART...PRISONER OF ELIZABETH TUDOR...
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2006-11-07
This is historical fiction at its finest. Masterfully written, the author weaves a spellbinding tapestry of events that chronicles the life of Mary Stuart, the Queen of Scots, while in captivity.

The book details her stay at the castle on the island of Lochleven in Scotland, while at the mercy of her illegitimate half brother and self-proclaimed Regent, the Earl of Moray. It recounts her daring escape from her Scottish captors, as well as her woefully misguided decision to flee to Enland, rather than to France or Spain.

Instead of the succor that the beautiful, charming, and very Catholic Mary, an anointed Queen, expected to receive from her cousin, the wily and Protestant Elizabeth I of England, Mary found, instead, an uneasy captivity. From the moment of her entry to England, she was in effect a prisoner, commuted from castle to castle with a never ending succession of jailers whose task was to ensure that she did not escape. It was a captivitry that was to span nineteen years.

Filled with the political intrigues and conspiracies that abounded in sixteenth century England and Scotland, the book paints a sympathetic portrait of Mary, a queen that ruled with her heart, rather than with her head. She was a woman who was at a disadvantage in negotiating with her cousin, as Elizabeth, unlike Mary, ruled with her head and not with her heart. Elizabeth was very much aware of the political realities of the time and sensitive to Mary's own claim by blood to the English throne, making Mary someone to be kept in check, rather than helped.

Based upon actual historical figures and events, the author creates three dimensional characters and infuses them with all the pomp and pageantry of the time. It is a stirringly written narrative that fully engages the reader. Those who love historical fiction, as well as those who have an interest in the life of Mary Stuart, the beleaguered Queen of Scots, will most certainly enjoy this book, as will anyone who simply loves a well written and compelling story.
