A witty, accessible introduction -- with a difference

This is an excellent introduction to six great modern philosophers, and is also a superb teaching text. I am aware of no other textbook that comes close in its ability to help the introductory student to understand some of the (apparently) baffling and outlandish things that these philosophers say. Francks really does explain and motivate their views, though, and show why one might take them seriously even today. Rather unusually, Francks begins the discussion of Descartes, not by diving into the Meditations, but by setting out Descartes' views about science -- esp his material monism. Ultimately, this makes it much easier to understand Descartes' mind-body dualism and his method of doubt in the Meditations, and to see the latter as more than a hysterical and implausible reaction to the possibility of scepticism. This alone is worth the price of the book, but is the perfect pedagogical set-up for the treatments of Spinoza and Leibniz as well. Also, my students are really enjoying reading this.

A superb introduction beginners

Franck's book is effectively "Modern philosophy for dummies". I am currently teaching a Modern Philosophy course and find this book superb for giving background to students with no philosophy background. His explanations are marvellously clear while also going surprisingly deep into the subject. My only beef is that he doesn't cover Kant. This book is a wonderful resource and I recommend it highly.

When Sue Doran writes about something you ,the reader, can be assured the result will be an indepth study of her subject matter...no just brush the surface with this writer...Here you will read about the political and social intrigue surrounding Elizabeth I and her courtships. The author focuses on a different approach to the Virgin Queen's trials in trying to govern England and handle the many "would be"and serious suitors.A most interesting and informative book for those interested in history.

Well overdue, comprehensive and innovative

This is a unique study which is of equal value to the academic or the interested amateur. For too long Christopher Haig's dated and simplified account of the Virgin Queen's persistent virginity has been allowed to dominate Elizabethan history. Susan Doran takes each of Elizabeth's courtships seriously instead of blindly assuming a grand narrative. Although female historians are relatively new to the public arena, Susan Doran has "the heart and stomach of a man".

The original Wonder Woman from Paradise Island

This is an exceptional book on the history of Queen Nanny. This book provides a great account of Queen Nanny in Jamaica from the perspective of the Maroons, Jamaicans, and British. There are plenty of historical references sprinkled throughout the literature so that the reader can do their own research. I have a sense that she was the original "Wonder Woman" as she lived on a true "Paradise Island" and could not just stop bullets but also "catch" them. The book goes into detail about the metaphysical importance of an Obeah woman and how her power kept the strong African spirit alive within the Jamaican Maroons. It is empowering to read how such few people were able to defeat the British in so many battles. The book is brief but packed with informative information on this little known person. As a man descended from the Akan, I felt proud how the African rituals were continued in Jamaica for those that escaped human bondage. This is a great read for both men and women.

This is a small book, 119 pages, that cuts a big swath. It is about an interesting period and a lively woman of the early 18th Century, someone who never made it into any of my history books. I certainly know about her now. Gottlieb pulls together threads from many sources into one rich fabric. This is a progressive book about colonialism, racism, feminism, about military srategy, about the West-African-rooted religious traditions and the use of supernatural powers that made their way into the Maroon Culture. Gottlieb obviously has great respect for her subject -- this remarkable woman, Nanny, part historical figure, part legend -- who represents a courageous struggle against oppression. The book is well-researched, illustrated, and spirited reading. Some of the historical documents can be bypassed if not interested. One is impressed with its relevance to the very same "isms" that continue to torment us in the 21st century.

A Musical Theatre Treasure!

What an exceptional book this is! I haven't been able to put it down. Without a doubt it's the best exposition of musical theatre creation that I've ever read - and I've read many! Not only does it tell you about the amazing lives of the two Frenchmen who wrote Les Misérables but, with a series of exclusive personal interviews, it details exactly how they did it. Not just Les Mis but all their shows, and there's long interviews too with all their co-writers, directors and producers. Vermette's skill in presentation is magnified many times by her ability to pull nuggets of wisdom out of such talented and diverse people, such as Trevor Nunn, Cameron Mackintosh and Herbert Kretzmer as well of course as Boublil and Schönberg themselves. It's a tour de force of form and substance and a fascinating read.
I discovered this book through the brilliant website which is colourful, informative and gives news and updates to the book[...]

This is a wonderful story incorporating many Biblical principles. The first time I read the story I thought first of what a neat picture of the heavenly Father it provided, and then with fondness of my own "daddy" who was similarly strict and loving. The larger, multicolor edition is ideal for a child; the small, sepia-toned edition makes a nice gift for an adult or teen.

This is one of my personal favorites. Trixie and some of the BWG's go to England to find out about Honey's inheritance and run into danger. Between pickpockets and Shakespeare, the Bobwhites learn more about Honey's governess, Miss Trask. Trixie is really in her element, even though no one else can figure out why she's so worried about their guide.

This is a gorgeous book on the "father-in-law" of Europe at the beginning of the 20th century. Well written and gorgeously illustrated.

And this price is a steal - at the museum shop of the King's Palace in Cetinje, Montenegro, this book sells for 100 Euros!

I really like history and biographies are my favorite source of historical information. My search for anything related to King Nikola began when I was told that, despite being of a lesser noble family, he had as much royal connections as King Christian IX of Denmark and Queen Victoria. The book is very well written and has plenty of photographs in an outstanding edition, and brings important information about the Balkan politics during the twilight of the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century. Great book!

I bought this because I very much liked a new book my one of the authors. I was blown away by the information in this book. I know so much more about the dangers posed by toxic chemicals. The book has definitely altered my thinking and actions. I am also amazed by the political struggle of the Inuit to get attention paid to the unique pollution problems that they face -problems they did not cause.

Very informative review of a critical global environmental issue. Very accessible for the non-expert but also lots of detail for those with greater knowledge. The fantastic pictures, graphs and charts really put things in perspective and make details easy to understand -- as does the great chronology and glossary. The book has a fantastic set of contributors including leading scientists, policy-makers, environmental advocates, indigenous representatives, the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Porgramme and the Minister of the Environment in Canada.

Not your usual history

I am frequently called upon by community groups to give a talk on the British royal family, given that I have worked in parliament, studied history in London, and have met several of the royals. This is rare among persons in midwestern America. Fortunately, there is no lack of material, and my talks are never the same.

One of my sources for interesting side notes and comic relief for these talks is 'The Oxford Book of Royal Anecdotes', edited by Lady Elizabeth Longford. Had there been tabloids throughout history many of these stories might have featured prominently (albeit probably with the occasional alien thrown in for good measure of sensationalism).

Longford does not commit the sin of most historians of the royals of beginning with William the Conqueror--there was a Britain before 1066. She includes Celts, Danes, and Saxons. Alas, she does not include Scots or others explicitly after 1066, but their stories are woven into the stories.

Longford's sources include histories, biographies, poems, newspaper accounts, diaries, and personal correspondence in library and museum collections. Many anecdotes are pulled from other histories--those bits that are neglected because the substance of the weightier matters overpowers them. Thus, this collection helps the hidden jewels to shine.

One example of Longford's treatment would be in recounting the shifting image over time of the reign and fate of Edward II. She gives brief details of biographers from 1313 (during his reign), 1327 (the year of his deposition), a seventeenth century biographer, and a modern biographer. In this we see that while the verdict of history holds sway, it needn't stay constant. Today's hero becomes tomorrow's villain, and yet later tragic character.

Here one can also see various bits about John Brown, friend and servant and supposed lover (even, some speculated, husband) of Victoria--their relationship is presented from many sides, and Longford resists jumping to conclusions herself.

From her epilogue, Longford states: 'This has been the story of many dynasties and one royal line. That line goes back a thousand years, yet it has shown infinite variety rather than recognisable family traits. Indeed it seems to cover the whole human spectrum, though in heightened or exaggerated form because of the royal ambiance.... The hushed abdication broadcast from Windsor Castle has replaced the crunch of the axe on Tower Green. Even anthologists can have no regrets.'

The best British royal history in a easy to read format.

If you've ever had a hankerin' for knowledge, trivia or just an insight into the kings and queens of England, this is the source. Dame Longford has provided historical and contemporary references, sotries and tales of the British royals from Boudiccea, the Warrior Queen to Alfred the Great, from Aethelred to Victoria to Elizabeth II. the Book opens with a detailed genology, including the Saxons and Danes, Normans, Plantagenets, Yorks, Lancastrians,Tudors, Saxe-Coburg-Gothas and Windsors.
