This book offers a fresh perspective on the gender issues surrrounding Queen Elizabeth I in Tudor time.
Are readers aware that Elizabeth threw shoes, lost her temper, cussed, flirted with her suitors, and lost the men she loved?
She may have safeguarded the secret of her marriage from the world.
Elizabeth lives on and holds close the answers to the questions still surrounding her mystique.

A fantastic read. England before 1066BattleofHastings. Queen Emma is quite a character, a survivor, almost on par with my alltime favorite Eleanor of Aquitaine. Ms O'Brian's research is implecable, her narrative gripping, the wealth of detail, considering the lack of primary sources, is impressive. I wish all history books were this well written.
WELL DONE AND WELL WORTH THE READ!

There are a couple of facts we need to remember when reading this particular book. First, and this is important, it, the book, is not a Doctorial Thesis and it is not written as such. This is a popular historical work, meant to inform, but at the same time, to entertain. Secondly, I too, like a couple of other reviewers, was a bit disappointed that more was not written about the main character, Emma, her personal life, etc. This leads to the second fact we must remember. Source documents from this era, in particular personal histories, are very, very hard to come by. Most documents from this time have simply disappeared, have been destroyed, or are lost in some historical black hole. This being said and this being remembered, as the book is being read, might help.
The author has given us a fascinating look into the life and politics during the latter part of the first century. A very troubled time for England, and indeed, most of Europe. True, she, the author, does not go into the depth of her subject as many of us would like, but as I have stated, the author had very few source documents of refer to. This work is done in the "popular mode," and is quite readable. The author has taken great pains to let us know when she is stating documented facts and when she drifts into the realm of speculation. This is important to understand what the author is trying to do. I found the author's style far from dry, considering the subject matter. Queen Emma was indeed a complex and fascinating woman and the author has gone to great lengths to bring this across.
This is one of those book I like to call a "tickler," or "seed book." It gives information to those who are interested in a subject, but not fanatical about it. My primary interest is in New World History, but I do like to know where we came from. Works such as this give me as much information as I need for my purposes. Granted, if I were doing a research paper, or was extremely interested in the subject, I would indeed want more. As it stands though, this work gave me a wonder glance into those days and times. Now that I have this information, I find I do have an interest and this work has "tickled" me into checking other works out. This is a good thing. Perhaps one day I could land a nice juicy government grant, travel to England, and check out some of the source documents myself. Would not that be fun!
All in all, I found the work to be very well done, enjoyable to read and quite helpful. I do recommend this one for any individual interested in those days and times and the Queen Emma.

Queen Emma and the Vikings opens a window on a time and a queen that is not often discussed. Emma was an extraordinary woman who married two kings, one an unlamented bumbler, the other a conquering Viking was mother to two more and lived through five kings altogehter. She was a survivor and no matter what life in her brutal era threw at her she triumphed.
Harriet O'Brien is a very talented author who took what could have been a dry, threadbare history and made it a thrilling read. I really loved it.

I actually bought this book from Amazon during a cruise aboard the QM2! The ship's book store is ridiculously overpriced, but I was able to see this book up against some others that were available. I chose this one.
(QM2 also has an overpriced internet connection, so the book was waiting for me when I got home.)
This book is loaded with good pictures about the construction of the ship, her fitting out, acceptance trials, and many shots of the interior while it was being finished out.
One real positive- unlike most other books of this type, you don't have almost a third of the book devoted to the history of ocean liners or the Cunard line!

The book capturing the birth of the Queen Mary II is awesome. The photography and narrative, as well as, the construction technique of the world's newest transatlantic liner are incredible. It is amazing to realize that the Titanic with a capacity of almost as many passengers and crew is less than one third the size of the QM2.
A must for ocean liner fans!

Rob Hoey writes fiction like he has lived it. The characters are real to life, and come right out of the pages. His story cannot be more timely, as the baby boomers head for the four walls of the nation's nursing homes that will be home to thousands of them in the coming years.

If you like serious detective stories with lots of blood, murder and violence in general, this book is not for you. But if you like a funny, intelligent, easy read, with characters that stand up and talk to you, with a plot that is realistic and troublesome, then Queen of Charts is a must read. I loved every page and couldn't put it down. This is a wonderful effort for a first novel and I hope Mr. Hoey cranks more of them out.

If you like Mary Engelbreit, you will like this book. Even if you are not a big fan, The Queen of Christmas is a very sweet book for children of all ages. Mary's illustrations are as bright and happy as ever and she is even a decent writer. The story follows Ann Estelle through the last few days before Christmas as she adds new things to her Christmas wish list everyday. In the end she realizes that the presents were not what made Christmas so special. This book also has the added bonus of sevel pages of Ann Estelle paper dolls. I gave this book to my 2 1/2 year old daughter and she loves it.

Young Ann Estelle aka the Queen of Christmas, began working on her Christmas list right after Christmas last year. While it may seem strange to begin wishing for new gifts right after you received a batch of splendid ones, Ann Estelle felt that it was essential to begin marking down the items she wanted the most. Now, one year later, Ann Estelle's list has grown to an amazing length, containing small items like a red skating outfit - with sparkles - all the way to large items, such as a pony. Now, as the Christmas celebrations have begun taking place, the Queen of Christmas realizes that there is much to do. From baking cookies, to sledding, to trimming the tree. With so much of her time taken up by festivities, Ann Estelle almost doesn't finish her list in time. But the Queen of Christmas knows just how Santa works - he'll bring her something great no matter what, even if it's not on her list.
Mary Engelbreit's illustrations have captured hearts around the world, but now her precocious alter ego, Ann Estelle, has the power to capture audiences with her oft-times zany, and spoiled-like musings on the world, and the holidays in general. Ann Estelle is like the world-renowned ELOISE, sans the Plaza Hotel. Her thoughts regarding the holidays, and presents, are hilarious, and mesh quite well with how young children think - that Santa will bring them anything and everything on their list, no matter how out there their requests are. Mary Engelbreit has done a marvelous job giving an enjoyable voice to Ann Estelle, while her illustrations depicting the Queen of Christmas participating in all things festive - from skating to sledding, and baking to feasting - bring the holiday tale to life, and close it with a moral that will leave every parent in smiles. Engelbreit and Ann Estelle team up to make your spirits bright this holiday season!

Ngoc Soan is a woman of many talents and even more secrets. As a young girl in Vietnam, she proudly helped her father create beautiful jewelry designs like the Star of Saigon. Their future as world famous designers seemed set but the war took away that hope, or so it seemed. Ngoc's father and mother were killed and the young woman was left deeply scarred (physically and emotionally).
Any other person would have given up on her dreams but not Ngoc. Evidentially jewelry design was not her only talent. She was incredibly lucky gambler with the abilities to be in the right place at the right time. What's more, Ngoc was a shrewd business woman who knew how to work the system. The result: a thriving diamond company that beats De Beers at its own game.
It was the original characters that initial drew me in to Queen of Diamonds. Each of the characters seemed so rich with tempting glimpses into background stories that make me want to know more about these people. The well written deeply interconnected story kind of sneaked up on me. Well worth a look.

This book is simply gripping! I couldn't put it down. The characters are all fascinating and complicated people. The story is fascinating and the info on the diamond business is intriquing. If you're looking for someone new to read - try R.O. Palmer's Queen of Diamonds!

If you like a thriller where characters jump off the page, Queen of Diamonds is for you. Ngoc Soan will stay with you longer than cookie-cutter lawyers and detectives, and you'll root vigorously for her as an underdog who makes her way in a tough new country and life. She has much to overcome, not the least of which is a world fraught with adversaries who want to bury her - in more ways than one.
Don't think this novel is all about characterizations though. There's an unlikely sweet romance and a thrilling plot -- and I guarantee you will look at diamonds in a new light. Palmer has obviously done his research.
The main plot has just the right amount of twists to keep you guessing without straining credulity (from the first page on, I couldn't put it down), and the pace occasionally slows just enough to learn about the seedier side of the diamond business.
I liked Palmer's first novel, Patriot James, but this one is even better - Queen of Diamonds is a winner!

I remember getting this for a birthday present on my fifth birthday, and absolutely loving it! Well, I found it in the basement the other day, and picked it up to see why I loved it so much.
"The Queen of Hearts" is basically about an unnamed little girl (referred to as The Little Girl), who promises her class her mother's wonderful tea hearts for the school party. But, the day before the party, her mom has to go away on a business trip, so the little girl and her father decide to make the cookies instead. Of course, the cookies turn out to be a big hit, and everyone loves them, but this is just such a nice story - you can't help but love it! The (what I believe to be) watercolor pictures aren't amazing, but fit the book very nicely - and I still have the heart-shaped necklace that came with the book!

For my 5-year-old who passionately wants to do things the right way and be the best at something, this book was a wonderful gift. She related to the little girl in the story, who wanted to bake as well as her mother did but was intimidated by her own inexperience and past failures. The story encourages readers to get help when they need it, but also to try hard things by themselves and never give up. Dads, as well as moms, will enjoy reading it with their daughters, because the little girl's father plays just as important a part as her mother does. My daughter remembers the point of the story whenever she puts on the necklace that came with it. Reading The Queen of Hearts made us want to put into practice what we had learned. We had to find the cookie recipe in a cookbook though, as it didn't come with the book. I would recommend this book as a gift for any little girl.

I felt sorry for the little girl who was afraid that if she baked cookies for her school party they would be yukky. I love to bake with my mom. We like to bake chocolate chip cookies and things for snacktime at kindergarten, but we also made the cookies like the little girl did in the book. They really were the best cookies! I like it when my mom reads with me and bakes with me. And the book had a necklace like a cookie cutter in it! I think I can make cookies as good as the girl in Queen of Hearts. Other girls will like this book too, but probably not boys.

The only currently available edition of Sir E A Wallis Budge's translation of the famed 'KEBRA NAGAST' combining Budge's eruditon with a poetic sense which the late colonial British were sometimes noted for. Budge's introductory essay alone is worth the price of the book, even if containing some outdated and offensive references to 'Negro savages' and the like. Note: the edition herein is a photo-reproduction of a volume in the Library of Congress, and is missing several pages which, using interlibrary loan services, I have found missing from original copies of the 1922 edition east of the Mississippi; the missing material has been forwarded to African Islamic Mission, but I have no data on whether it has been included since my correspondence. The missing parts include, always, "How Solomon Recognized His Firstborn Son" and "The Plot to Steal the Ark From the Temple in Jerusalem". The book evinces an origin during a perhaps-apocryphal time when Judaism was the dominat religion in Ethiopia, and shows further evidences of a somewhat-tortuous rewrite when Christianity became dominant; but the story may have been all an invention from the time of the 'Restoration' of the Solomonic Dynasty under Yekuno Amlak in the 13th Century.

I was very surprised and pleased with the quality and scope of these stories. Some of the tales actually scared me even though Im over 30!!! The author does a great job crafting these macabre stories. She uses real life details, plot twists and surprise endings. I highly recommend buying this for yourself and as a gift for your favorite ghoul :)

"It was a dark and gloomy night," perfect for making your friends shake and quake, especially as told by master storyteller Roberta Simpson Brown. "Queen of the Cold-Blooded Tales," is not for the faint hearted.
Since we own cats, our favorite in this great collection is the very last one, 'Feed My Cats.' Alice Eaton loves her cats, they love her for the great care she takes of them. She has one special cat, Big One who must have the perfect treat. Be careful if someone asks you to feed their cats; you'd best follow their directions as cats are picky.
Everyone loves a little dose of terror, just the right suspension of belief. This is a book to enjoy alone or with friends and it doesn't have to be just on Halloween.

A rare story of a women truly in love her husband and partner in life. A man who had other girlfriends up until his 87th year and discussed them with his wife. Secure in her position with him, she was happy for him to have them - only golddiggers, nymphomaniacs and bores excepted. It is an inspiring love story for its apparent lack of anger or jealously on her part. No one made her laugh the way, he, Vyner did.

Briefly, Sylvia Brooke loved her husband, Vyner. Vyner had many girlfriends and discussed them with her. The only one's she did not want near him were golddiggers, nymphomaniancs or bores. The rest she was happy enough with. None ever displaced her as a key woman and friend in his life. He romanced up to the age of 87, apparently. Judging by her account of their life together, there is an almost incredible lack of anger or jealously on her part. And an acceptance of the man he was. A majority of women would have opted to depart from him and pine away for every. She did not take that road. They loved and laughed together.
For those who advocate more than one partner in life, such as those in the polyamory movement, there will be few life stories better than this to inspire them. This life story rings true and one would love to know more.
The Hon. Sylvia Lady Brooke came from the upper classes, economically or socially speaking. In human terms, also, she was a class apart and inspiring. There is, surely, a lesson here on how to deal with our need for human, emotional and sexual variety. This book is out of print. It should be reprinted.
