After checking this book out of the library multiple times, I decided to buy it because of the balanced overview of the Queen and her England. Many biographies of Queen Elizabeth I are riddled with the author's personal prejudice for or against the Queen and this one does not. I enjoy the photos as do students in the workshops I teach.

A wonderful book for those who love Elizabeth I

The Public and Private Worlds of Elizabeth I is a nicely written look into her personal and private life. It is very informational; from the workings of Elizabethan politics to the fashion of the time. It is informative with out getting overly academic. It is great for anyone wishing to research and/or recreate aspects of that time period. I encourage anyone who is intererested in Elizabeth I to purchase this book. One of the greatest features of this book is the full color pictures. Definitely a must have!!! A wonderful coffee table book too.

This work has a wealth of information about Elizabeth I and
the era itself. She is portrayed as an elegant monarch, dressed
in silk and other fine clothing. A portrait of Elizabeth
depicts her stately appearance as a Tudor. Elizabeth liked to
stroll in the area of the Great Hall at Hatfield. A personal
astrolobe is depicted-a fine personal item created circa 1560.
Her coronation was a stately affair depicted in a personal
portrait considered to be priceless today. This work is perfect for historians and others interested in the period of Elizabeth. The full color portraits are valuable
in their own right.

Three years ago, I added this book to my too-large collection of books about the Royal Family. I started re-reading it this week when looking up something about her disinterest in clothes while reading the reports of her visit to Australia. Whoever is doing her hats now should be drawn and quartered!

This is an enjoyable book and I can only feel a bit sorry for the Queen. For all of her worldly possessions, she leads a rather dreadful life. Smiling, looking interested, holding flowers, etc. must almost drive her out of her mind! She does a good job of it, though, and for that I give her credit. It's a good show. I've been watching it for over 40 years!

Informative and highly entertaining

One of the best books on the British Royal Family and on Queen Elizabeth in particular.

Reading this book one can see that Mr. Davies is quite knowledgeable and has done his homework where researching the subject is concerned.

Queen Elizabeth may not be easily amused - and she has every right not to be - but I certainly was highly amused and entertained.

HM may not be amused but I sure was!

Ever since I can remember I have been fascinated by the British Royal family; watching the weddings of both the Waleses and the Yorks, reading Majesty magazine each month, etc. I bought this book to find out more about the Queen and Prince Phillip. I finished this book within two days and still find myself drawn to it. The depth that the author reaches, describing the Queen's marriage, family, responsibilities, daily life - it is all covered with a thoroughness that makes the reader feel as though they knew Her Majesty personally. Undoubtedly there are other books available that detail Queen Elizabeth II's life, but this one will stand out due to it's ability to draw the reader into the world of this remarkable monarch.

A Wonderful Continuation of the Stoneways Trilogy!

Review Date: 2008-01-14
Queen Ferris by S.C. Butler is the second book of the new young adult fantasy series, The Stoneways Trilogy.

Reiffen, Avender, and Ferris have grown to adulthood, and are capable of ruling the land or detroying it. Ferris is wooed by the prince Brizen, whose father (might or might not have) usurped the reign of the kingdoms of Banking and Wayland from Reiffen when he was a babe. Avender patrols the border, guarding the kingdom against the three evil wizards who are about to unleash a war from the north.

Reiffen voluntary returned to the Wizards at the end of Reiffen's Choice; he now serves the wizards. Is he ensorceled or turned traitor? Does it matter? If he leads theWizards' armies, only his death will save the lives of the people of the land. Or so the powerful and wise declare.

But the years have not weakened the friendship between Avender, Ferris, and Reiffen. What do their hearts tell them about Reiffen? What will they do when he, because of love and friendship, willingly gives himself into their power?

I enjoyed Queen Ferris even more than Reiffen's Choice, which is saying a lot. Mr. Butler used the power of description in Reiffen's Choice to anchor the reader in the land. He drives Queen Ferris forward with the power of characterization, for Reiffen, Avender, and Ferris have grown to adulthood.

Everybody always wants to be something they're not," said Ferris. "I'm sure I'd love to be a princess."
Brizen's foot scuffed closer across the brown needles. With a bit of a shock, Ferris realized what she'd said.
"You can be a princess a lot easier than I can not be a prince," he told her.
"I don't love you, Brizen," she replied, trying to recover what she hadn't even known she might let slip.
"I know." He sighed quietly and looked at his empty hands.

In Reiffen's Choice, Mr. Butler hints at a new creation mythos. In Queen Ferris, he develops the creation story more fully. I enjoyed seeing how the story lines arose from and were driven by his creation mythos. Imagining the beginning of a new world that is so different from our own is quite a feat. To logically carry the creation mythos forward so that the story is internally consistent is amazing.

With this volume, Reiffen and Ferris's story is nearly complete. I'm looking forward to the third volume to see how Avender's story comes to completion.

Three Cheers for Queen Ferris!

Having thoroughly enjoyed Reiffen's Choice, S.C. Butler's first book of the Stoneways Trilogy, I was thrilled to discover that Queen Ferris, the second book, stands up just as well. The characters age into young adults in this sequel, which takes place over several years, and become more complex as they move through their world and develop other relationships. In addition to the dark deeds and challenges Reiffen experiences as part of the frightening world of the wizards, Butler layers on the emotional entanglements of family and friends, self-doubts and struggles that are common to all young adults. Once again, Butler balances the dark evil and cruelty of the wizards and their minions with a dose of humor, compassion, nobility and warmth from other characters. Butler's descriptions of the characters and their surroundings are so incredibly detailed and precise, you may begin to wonder if this is really fiction or if he actually lived among the dwarfs in Issinlough, was a captive in Ussene, or spent time in Valing observing the habits of shape-shifting bears. He describes not only the scene of the current adventure but has imagined a whole mythology for the creation of his world. This is a terrific series. While I look forward to reading book three, I dread the end of the Stoneways Trilogy and not being able to follow the further adventures of the characters I have come to love.

Wow.

Everyone who loved Reiffen's Choice - rejoice, for Queen Ferris is here!

As is to be expected, the second book in the Stoneways Trilogy delivers adventure and humor. What readers of the first book may not have expected is that this one also packs a good solid dose of romance. The children have grown up, they are now young adults with young-adult concerns, and everything has become more complicated than it was when they were children together in Valing.

Ferris in particular gets her chance to shine, as she has to juggle loyalties and friendships, balancing the demands of her heart against the demands of her position in society.

Redburr is back, bigger (and funnier) than ever, and a few new characters add depth and realism to this story of magic and its terrible cost.

In this book, the consequences of Reiffen's Choice first become apparent, as everyone in the story has to find a way to live with the decision he made. Don't miss this trilogy, and keep an eye open for the third book next year. This is the best book I've read all year. Absolutely a keeper!

strong Stoneway's saga

After the escapades with the three powerful wizards who gave him the selection between being their puppet or being their puppet because they planned to put him on the thrones of Wayland and Banking (see REIFFEN'S CHOICE). However Reiffen endured their abduction until he was rescued, but also knows for him to survive and keep the thrones that are rightfully his, he must face the enemy in their lair and find a way to defeat them. Thus, he decides to leave the comfort of friends Avender and Ferris and his mom to return to the malevolent wizards' home in Ussene. There he hopes to persuade them that his time with them has turned him to the dark.

However, the wizards did not become so powerful by being stupid. They demand Reiffen prove his conversion by performing some ugly tasks. He reluctantly agrees to misuse his power to perform nasty deeds although he fears his inner soul will become tainted forever.

Whereas the first book of the Stoneway's saga was more a coming of age tale starring a twelve years old sheltered boy, the second book is more a morality play that is relevant in the world today. Reiffen justifies his behavior of performing evil deeds as a means to achieve a worthy end. His choices are much more complex and potentially hurtful to others than he had to face in the previous tale as for the most part only he was directly impacted. Thus Reiffen is even a more complicated protagonist leading fans of all ages to enjoy his latest adventures.

This was a good read.. Kind of funny because it takes place in the 80s I did have to laugh at the changes in technology and society since then.. BUT the story did grab me, I couldn't put it down and finished in the same day (don't tell my boss.) As a mother some of it made me tear up, but I guess that's the sign of a good one. And the story was good, I could discuss with my husband without feeling like a goober. (Romance novels are my guilty pleasure, I'll admit.)

Once again Heather Graham didn't dissappoint this reader. Queen of Hearts is not only a wonderful love story but has plenty of suspense. I liked the way the book grabbed me in the first chapter and never let up. The story takes place on a luxury yacht and it enhances the romantic setting. Rhiannan has been tragically hurt in the past and Kiel is the perfect man to bring healing. The story becomes very suspenseful in the middle and I found myself biting my nails. I highly recommend this book!

The Queen Of Spiders is a fantastic story for young adults about Luke Grant -- a boy who seeks refuge from cruel bullies and mockery in the third grade. When a nightmare attacks Luke in a way that is far more than just a bad dream, he must plumb the depths of a fantastic world with help from a gargoyle, a lizard, a minotaur, and his best friend Emily Wu, facing down horrible enemies in search of the secrets of imagination itself, all to stop the Queen of Spiders before she enters our world. An enjoyable fairy-tale quality story, The Queen Of Spiders documents author Marc Aranha as a natural storyteller with a genuine and creative ability to spin an entertaining fantasy for young readers.

I read it and then gave it to my 10 year old son. We both found it hard to put down once it swung into action. Its a bit scary at points but nothing a veteran of Harry Potter tales can't handle. The Battlecry "Obie Kabey!" has replaced "Redwall!" in our house for now. In my son's words "Its a really good book."

Actually, I probably shouldn't review this book as I am more familiar with the approximately 600 page biography of Queen Victoria that the Countess of Longford published in 1965. It is excellent. I only mention this as one reviewer was disappointed by the length of this version. Those seeking a far more in-depth account by the same author should search for QUEEN VICTORIA-BORN TO SUCCEED.

I first started listening to Queen back around 1987, having a copy of "The Game" that a cousin gave me. But it wasn't until 1992 that I became a fan, and I bought this book to learn about the band. It's got a lot of good information and pictures, and I recommend it to any Queen fan.

There is one aspect of the band that isn't touched on in the book, and that is their debauchery! Even though I've been a fan for almost 15 years, only recently did I learn that these guys were real hellraisers! I'd read a magazine article after "Innuendo" came out that mentioned the wild release party they held for it, but I had no idea how hard these guys partied. Sick and twisted!

But anyway, that one, minor, misgiving aside, I recommend this book. I wish there were more books available on Queen.

I bought this book back in 1992 when I first became a Queen fanatic. There are some great pictures and quotes, along with kind of an abbreviated history of the band. It concludes with a list of all of Queen's music releases up until 1992. It is a beautiful book that is well worth the money. You will look at it again and again.

A Rock n' Roll extravaganza for the masses.

The pictures alone are worth the price, but the ingenius quotes from band members simply makes this one of the best Queen books available. Look for Freddie in his Superman shirt!

In this illustrated book for the advanced reader, we meet 10-year-old Katia and follow her on her quest to save her mother from the angry Sea Queen. He mother has been taken by the Sea Queen and has forgotten whom she is, becoming part of the sea in the process.

Katia's adventures from the time she finds out what has happened to her mother until the moment of truth that is revealed about the long standing feud between the Sea Queen and Katia's fishing village are a delightful read.

The book will keep an older child interested from start to finish. The book portrays witches in a non-judgmental light but the characters are still fictional and at times farfetched. Typical fairy tale characters grace the pages in this Pagan friendly tale.

The first selection from this new publisher is an outstanding effort. I am interested to see what else Abzu's Fountain Press has in store for the younger Pagans.

I already knew some things about Selena from watching the movie Selena, which was based on her life, as well as listening to some of her CD's. However, this audiobook gave me a lot more information about her life and death. The plot was well-written and well-read, it moved along very quickely and excitingly. Also, the other side of the tape is the same thing but in Spanish, which gave me a chance to practice my Spanish listening skills. :) I recommend this audiobook to anyone who likes Selena's music and/or is interested in her life, career, and death.
