I didn't think I would have picked up a book with "Beauty Queen" in the title, but I enjoyed reading the first book, Lucy and the Liberty Quilt so much to my little sister that I bought the second book. Lucy and the Beauty Queen: Book 2 is really good! I'm a young man in my teens, and even I was drawn into Lucy's adventures in ancient Egypt. The writing is so descriptive that I can visualize each scene and character. Wonderful pacing of the book, too - fast. It keeps you reading until you finish the book! This book had action, romance, comedy, drama, and fantasy. Amazingly, Victoria London also manages to beautifully tie in historical significance, a lesson about self-image/self-esteem, and the battle between good and evil. I truly enjoyed this book. It's mature enough for parents to enjoy, yet entertaining enough for young readers to be drawn into its story. Victoria London's works is likely to become classics - the next Madeline L' Engle!

I'm 13 years old, and I loved reading about Lucy. In the first book, she hasn't learn how to use her gift yet. But in this book, she uses it often. This book isn't all about being goody-twoshoes. Lucy faces temptation, dark forces, and even a sinister plot against her new friend, Queen Cleopatra. I'm not going to tell you how the story ends, but Lucy learns a lot more than she bargained for in this book. Good adventures and plot, I'd recommend it even to boys.

Another Side to Cleopatra

Lucy and the Beauty Queen, the second book to the Lucy series in Gifted Girls, shows another side to the mysterious Cleopatra. This is a side imaginatively told, of a young Cleopatra who must rise to lead a weak Egypt. How does this relate back to Lucy? Lucy is in a quest to find her explorer father. Through her gift and through her journey back in time to find her father, Lucy learns about bravery and courage. This is not your typical girl's book where everything is sunny and bright, but a book that reminds you of a shorter version of a Wrinkle in Time. And it is charming. Mrs. Potter and her dog Mr. Smithy is vivid and lovable. Lucy is spunky, and Nellie Ham is funny. When I read the Emily Cobbs Collection, another character in the Gifted Girls Series, I was compelled to read the Lucy books. In Emily Cobbs, the Explorer Society becomes more prominent, and there is more of a backstory on the Gifted Girls. A wonderful new series that have been under the radar, but has caught the attention of schools and parents since it is among the recommendation lists. My younger sister loves this series.

Mary Engelbreit's new cookbook is full of great recipes that are accompanied by detailed photographs and whimsical illustrations by Mary. She admits that she is not a big cook but she can spot a good recipe when she sees one. There's a good variety of recipes which are also grouped together for different occasions. This is very helpful in planning a party and you want everything to go well together. We already made the "Garlic Mashed Potato Casserole" and it was yummy! I'd highly recommend this cookbook for the good food to be enjoyed and for the great illustrations and comments by Mary!

I have been a huge fan of Mary Engelbreit's since the very first time I ever found one of her greeting cards in a shop. I own MANY of her books, subscribe to her magazine, have a calendar hanging in a prominent location every year...I could go on and on. But I think the main reason I love this cookbook so much is due largely to prop stylist Barbara Fritz and photographer Alison Miksch. I simply cannot get enough of the beautiful photos of the foods in the book! They are pictured and served up on fabulous vintage and antique dishes, linens and kitchenware. If you collect and/or love vintage things, you will love the pictures, too. Of course - the illustrations by Mary that decorate the entire book add her signature lovely touch - sort of like the icing on the cake - you know?! I must admit, I haven't even tried any of the recipes -I bought it because it's a Mary Engelbreit book, and because of the photos accompanying the recipes- and I love it for the same reasons!

I love this cookbook!

If you don't cook much, but want recipes that will impress, this is a great book. I have had this book for a couple years now and several of the recipes have become my favorites. And yet, they are surprisingly simple. I have given "cooking classes" with them for a friend who claims to be useless in the kitchen. She was able to go home to cook for her family to rave reviews.

Though I normally don't read many detective mysteries, I read this one by my friend, law professor Jack Dobbyn. The action moves, the humor is wry, and the book is well plotted and well written. Set in Boston, it offers fascinating information on the tongs that terrorize chinatowns in many American cities. A great read.

First Sentence: Suppose you were to wake up one Monday morning to a promising, amber sun rising out of Boston Harbor.

Michael Knight is a young attorney in a very prestigious Boston law firm. Lex Devlin is a legendary attorney whose career was nearly ruined by rumor that he bought a juror. Now the two are working together to defend, and prove innocent, the son of an important Judge. The young man is accused of shooting a revered elderly man in Chinatown. In the investigation, Michael, with his college friend Harry, sees sides of Chinatown he didn't know existed and he may not survive the experience.

Gripping, exciting, suspenseful--over the top at times but boy, did it keep me turning the pages. There was good development of the main characters, wonderful wry humor and a chance to visit my favorite city of Boston and the drive to Canada. I can't ensure the accuracy of the legal scenes, but considering Dobbyn was a practicing lawyer and now a professor of law, I have to assume they are correct. They certainly aren't dull, as is nothing in this book. If you are looking for an exciting weekend read, this is it. I'll also admit I also loved that his inside cover picture is him, his wife and their dog.

In Boston Michael Knight works as a third year associate attorney at Bilson, Dawes, Leftbridge & Sykes law firm. Thus he is shocked when African-American judge Amos Bradley, expected to be named to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court soon, asks him to represent his son Anthony, who is accused of killing sexagenarian Mr. Chen An-Young during a New Year's parade. The shooting has angered the Chinese-American community as Mr. Chen was a well respected grandfather.

Knight visits the incarcerated Anthony at the Suffolk County prison where he finds his client articulate and grateful. Anthony insists he is guilty of only agreeing to go with his friend Terry Blocher to attend the Chinese New Year gala. At the office, attorney Alexis "Lex" Devlin offers to help Michael with the case; Alexis was the top gun until a decade ago when a jury-tampering charge forced Lex into "hiding". The case looks hopeless on the surface, but with Knight following clues that take him into nasty neighborhoods, he believes he can prove his client's innocence that is if he stays alive long enough.

The protagonist knew nothing about government corruption or Chinese organized gangs in spite of being in the prosecutor's office for four years before he joined his current firm and grew up in the city. Knight is a terrific protagonist who, with his mentor, makes for a delightful Bostonian joy ride. The story line is fast-paced and includes some fun references to Beantown literary sleuths. However, it is the courtroom that makes this a fine legal thriller as fans of the sub-genre will enjoy the teaming of Michael and Lex.

As a long time fan of Dobbyn's short stories in Ellery Queen, Hitchcock, et al,I read his first full length novel with eager anticipation.Neon Dragon did not disapppoint & in fact was a great read!
Fast paced with well placed sarcasm & wry humor, the story & characters pull one in & make it difficult to put down ala Patterson & Grisham. However, Dobbyn has a style uniquely his own. His scenes in & about Boston bring back images that I as a former Bostonian can really appreciate.
I look forward to his next novel.

Review Date: 2004-10-28
Awaiting execution for treason after she was Queen of England for just nine days, sixteen-year-old Lady Jane Grey looks back on her short life. She had some happiness as a child, but her parents were distant. A cousin of the Tudor ruling family, she spent some time at court as a young girl. Eventually, her parents had her married to a man she didn't love, or even like. Meanwhile, England is caught in turmoil, as the young Protestant king, Edward, dies. Jane's male relatives scheme to have her crowned Queen of England instead of Edward's Catholic half-sister Mary, although Jane wants no part of it. Powerless to determine her own destiny, she is forced to accept the crown of England and is caught up against her will in events that can only end in tragedy.

This excellent historical brought to life the tragic story of Lady Jane Grey; as a big fan of historical fiction about young female royals, I found it particularly interesting. She was just a young girl who had no say in her own future and wrongly lost her life as a result of a plot she had no real part in. I highly recommend this novel to teen readers who like to read historical fiction about royalty.

I read this book when I was 13, and I thought it was great! It really got me interested in Jane Grey, Henry VIII and his wives, as well as 16th century England in general. It led me to further research into the subjects and I'm still interested after six years! The book is well-written and really draws you into the story of Jane and her short-lived reign. It's quite accurate for a "juvenile fiction" book, which is appreciated. I believe that historical fiction is one of the best ways to learn about history and its legendary figures. Hopefully many teens will find it and be drawn into the period as I was. Now if only my history lectures would discuss it...

I know I know, this is one of the most sugar sweet manga series there is out there, but I just can't help myself. My heart just melts for the sweet Belldandy. In this volume Keiichi must race against an American couple to win money for his broke motor club. The race is quite interesting especially when Belldandy passes out from using too much of her energy. Also the motor club finds the Shinden a plane prototype thatw as made for WW II, but never made it to the air, but with Keiichi's help its dreams will come true. Also, Demon first class Mara makes her first appearance using Sayoko in a plot to foil whatever the goddesses do. The most interesting story in the book is the title story. Urd makes a love potion that she intends to give Keiichi and Belldandy, but Tamiya makes her drink it, Then she is falling into any guys' arms who metions cherry blossoms. Weird but wonderful stuff. kono manga yonde kudasai!

Easily the best of the first three Goddess books, "Love Potion No. 9" is another fun-filled escapade through the world of Belldandy and Keiichi. As always, every character is designed with care -- even the despicable Sayoko has her own special charm. This ability to give each character individuality is Fujishima's greatest strength, and it's what sets him apart from other manga artists.

Every chapter in "Love Potion No.9" is delightful; Fujishima's gentle but wicked sense of humor can be found sprinkled throughout the pages. Urd's lovestruck rampage is simply wonderful, as is Belldandy's reaction to Sayoko's videocamera voyeurism. (I'm not saying anymore about it!) And of course, just wait until you get to meet the S&M club ...

This graphic novel contains five stories in the popular "Oh My Goddess" series. The life of Belldandy and Keiichi continues to be explored with a powerful new foe to interfere in their life together.

The first tale is about Sayoko and Aoshima's attempt to discover Belldandy's secret. The second tale is slightly longer and deals with Keiichi and Belldandy racing as a team for the Nekomi Tech Motor Club in an off road race. Meanwhile Aoshima attempts to prevent them from winning. The third story covers Aoshima's attacks on the Nekomi Tech Motor Club by opening his own club and destroying their club house. Belldandy discovers a buried Shinden experimental plane from WWII which the club must repair in time for the school festival.

The fourth tale has one of Urd's love potions backfiring on her with humorous results. The final tale is a longer one and introduces us to the demon Mara. Mara is out to prevent Urd and Belldandy from doing as they please on Earth and her target is Keiichi.

Bottom line: Another good graphic novel that is a must-have for OMG fans. The intoduction of Mara as a powerful foe to the goddesses is a good one.

Fujishima sensei's artwork is incredible! He has a deft touch with humor; presenting some truly risque things in a gentle way -- making you see the humor even as you agree with the characters' shock. There are some sweetly sentimental moments tucked away in these amusing tales and you'll enjoy each and every one. From here on out Dark Horse dutifully follows the original Japanese manga so if you want to find out where this story is taking you, you better start buying!

A fun little read.

In this, the second volume of "Oh My Goddess", Keiichi and Belldandy participate in a big race, Keiichi and his motor club pals must repair the airship 'Shiden II". Urd also experiments with a love potion with silly results. And we are introduced to the evil Demon.

The book contains "Oh My Goddess" Part I issues four and five, Part II issues six, seven, and eight, and "On a Wing and a Prayer" and "Love Potion #9".

As usual, "Oh My Goddess" has a undeniably charming cast of character. Belldandy is the cutest, kindest Goddess around, and Keiichi's timid nature only makes "Oh My Goddess" even more charming. Even Urd, who is is constantly trying to get Keiichi and Belldandy in bed, never got on my nerves.

The pace for the plot is great, espcailly in "The Secret's Out" and "What a Miracle". Suspense is involved, and the plot unravels quite well. "Love Potion No.9" didn't have that degree of storytelling, and it didn't need it. Instead it focuses on humor and choas.

In this volume, we meet Mara, the demon goddess, and Sayoko's desire for the elimination of Belldandy are revealed.

Anyone that enjoys comedy and is looking for an easy to read manga, marked with beautiful art, should get themself's a copy of "Oh My Goddess!". It's not as charming as the first one, but who cares?

The title character of this cautionary tale, Princess Justina Albertina, is one of those horrid little girls you love to hate. She's nasty and bratty, spoiled and mean; a despicable twit who could easily give Veruca Salt a run for her money. You know the type.

Her nanny, on the other hand, rocks the casbah. When Justina demands a pet, nanny comes through. When Justina demands a BETTER pet, nanny comes through again. When Justina demands an EVEN BETTER pet, her unflappable, invincible nanny comes through yet again...until Princess Justina Albertina finally gets the pet she deserves.

Heh, heh, heh.

We won't tell you what happens next, but let's just say the princess suffers a fate worse than Veruca's. But lest you wonder whether the finale's a bit too grim for youngsters, rest assured that our unofficial focus group (a spry group of kinders from Ottawa, Illinois) found the ending so delightfully delicious, they immediately asked for seconds...and so will you!

Michael Chesworth's illustrations are a winsome hoot, the perfect accompaniment to Ellen Dee Davidson's wry, clever text. Don't miss this one!

Princess Justina Albertina: A Cautionary Tale is a whimsical picturebook with an underlying moral - be very careful what you wish for! Princess Justina Albertina, a chubby, bad-tempered child princess used to getting her own way and giving her nanny headaches, wants a pet - but not just any pet will do. She mistreats and finds fault with every rare and exotic pet her nanny brings, and finally throws a tantrum until her nanny gives in and brings back the ultimate pet - a majestic griffon. "As soon as she saw him, Princess Justina Albertina ran over and said, 'He's perfect. He's exactly the pet I want.' The griffon opened his eagle beak and swallowed Princess Justina Albertina in one gulp. Then the griffon burped and flew away." The color illustrations vividly bring a spoiled young girl and her gaggle of amazing animals to life in this zany story with message.

Princess Justina Albertina likes to get her own way and if she doesn't--look out! When she decides she wants a pet, it is up to her nanny to find a pet with all the perfect qualities.

In this escalating story of a spoiled little girl, the author uses unusual animals with unique qualities that most any child would treasure. There is a wonderful moral to the story, but kids don't seem put off by that in the least, as it is funny rather than preachy. The illustrations are perfect for the text--and boy, will mothers recognize Princess Justina Albertina in her fit element.

In my first read through, I reached the final page and burst out laughing. My kids want to read it again and again and love to discuss the many different facets of the book. Boys and girls alike love this book and my three kids give it six thumbs up. I have to add my two thumbs to the count.

Armchair Interviews says: This book is a treasure to any child's library.

In drawing inspiration from her daughter, she was able to create a story that saw the other side of "princessdom" as she called it. The princesses learn what hard work is, and that there is more to life than privilege and possessions. Very cute and different! Most enjoyable!

This is the perfect updated fairy tale. It's light and charming, and makes you feel it's okay to let your little ones indulge their princess obsessions. The three bored princesses trade places with their servants for a day, and it turns out to be a real eye-opener. The princesses make a change for good, and end up sharing the palace workload on a permanent basis. The message of compassion is never too sappy, sweet, or preachy, and the illustrations are truly humorous. I also really enjoyed the rhythm of the text when reading it to my kids. My niece is 5 years old and wants to be a princess. Princess clothes, princess stories, princess pictures. She thinks being a princess means you are the most beautiful of all, have the most beautiful clothes, and get the handsome prince. Beauty is the sole criterion for princesshood.

Thankfully, there's this book to teach her that the most important and admirable quality in princesses is that they try new things, work hard, are nice to others and never give up. This book gets 5 stars because it's funny, imaginative, excellently illustrated, and reminds kids that princesses have moral qualities of being good people. It's not enough to be beautiful, pampered, rich and wear beautiful clothing; a princess should also be kind, industrious and have a sense of self-respect and a strong work ethic.

I had the wonderful opportunity of working on board the Queen Elizabeth 2 during my career at sea. I served for 10 months as the Captains' Steward and during that time met many wonderful and interesting people.
These days I work as a Butler for one of the former passengers I waited on at the Captain's table, many years ago so in a way, it is a reunion of sorts.
I found this book to be very informative and and full of wonderful photographs. I especially enjoyed the look "behind the scenes," that many passengers don't get to see when they are on board. People who have actually sailed on the Queen Elizabeth 2 will no doubt enjoy this book and all that Captain Warwick has included.

I think this is a wonderful updated edition of the book. It has new pictures of it's 1994 refit. The only disapointment was the deck plan in the inside cover was not updated. This is though a wonderful book to have if you have been on the QE2, planning to go on it, or just interested in ocean liners.

connection between modern addiction and legend

C.G.Jung made the connection between "spirit" and addiction which became a foundation for modern day 12 step recovery programs. Sylvia Brinton Perera brings us up to date in her contemporary and insightful understanding of what it feels like to be an addict, the effects of addiction on the psyche, and addiction as an archetype.Through her telling of the stories connected to an"ancient addict", she grounds the behavior of that personality in a time-less testimony to this complex. This book is vitally important to both persons dealing with an addiction themselves and for the professionals who try to understand their addicted patients. For those who are searching for deeper connections and understandings of the literal tenets of recovery doctrine, the recovery literature...this book challenges the reader to embrace the old mysteries in the unscathing light of case histories. Maeve was a beguiling woman irresistible, fascinating and like addiction itself hypnotic. Like modern day addiction one could die in her arms. I keep this book close to my bed as a reminder and a guide.

A profound and excellently written psychological study.

Sylvia Brinton Perera has written beautifully an insightful book exploring the wisdom and practical application of how the psychological workings of Celtic mythology can be applied to today's modern world. Perera, a Jungian psychoanalyst skillfully reveals through her many years of clincial practice "connections between material from the deepest levels of the psyche and the myths and rituals of the great Irish goddess Maeve", a Celtic archetype of ectasy, addition and healing. This important book offers "the promise of understanding how the battle is suffered, fought and won for for those who have had to do battle with their own addictions or with those of their loved ones or clients". Bravo to this clear and bold exploration of this archetypal experience.

Even the most alert of readers has a difficult time deciphering the paratactic stories of Celtic Mythology. At times, it takes on an hallucinogenic quality, as if inspired by druidic forces. In this book-length study of Queen Maeve, Sylvia Perera accomplishes an heroic feat of her own. She takes a group of myths and tales associated with Queen Maeve and makes them accessible to the modern reader without sacrificing the complexity and nuance of their medieval sources. And then, as if that were not enough, she demonstrates how these stories give us an insight into those joint paradigms of intoxication and addiction. This is archetypal analysis at its best. And it is all very readable. This book is clearly a labor of love, and Ms. Perera's passion for the subject shows through in every chapter.

Syvia Perera's talents as a Jungian analyst and passion for Celtic myth are here combined in a fascinating exploration of the archetypal foundations underlying addictive behavior. The book, the result of long years of practice, is rich in clinical detail and demonstrates the healing power of the archetype.

As a psychotherapist often working with the issues of addiction and recovery, I am always searching for a language that speaks to the individual client about this struggle. It is sometimes difficult to hear words that have become too familiar. Sylvia Brinton Perera has taken on the task of offering us another way to think about addiction, not as a substitute for AA, but as a model of an additional kind of support for healing. These old stories of Ireland and the great Irish goddess, Maeve, have much to teach us about the ancient hunger that is part of our modern struggle with addiction in its many forms. We come to a better understanding of that hunger and the belief that transformation or ecstasy is possible only through this drink, this food, this drug, this relationship, NOW. Through the many forms Queen Maeve takes in these legends, we come to appreciate her complexity. The stories are sometimes fierce, which helps us recognize the need for courage and helps us remember the possibility of finding our own. We come to a deeper respect for the complicated process of recovery and an awareness of what strengths might be necessary in achieving it. Ways to recognize and develop the figures representing those strengths within ourselves are clearly explained, so that we may (for example) call on the fierce warrior goddess to serve us in recovery, to stand guard as we attempt to walk that path. Ms. Perera, a Jungian psychoanalyst for many years, is generous with her sharing. She is willing to examine her own hungers, which helps us trust her as we recognize ours. This is not an easy book, but written with such an appealing combination of intellect and clarity that it entices the reader to continue. Her precise use of language, and the richness of her storytelling sometimes teaches us things in spite of our rational defenses, not unlike psychotherapy itself. There is a moving example of the hope this book offers when Perera is discussing the need to cultivate a more objective position, "rather than erupting wildly, disappearing into addictive behavior or shame, despair, and self-hate, the person prone to addiction can, as one man said, 'clear the space to begin to see and want my own life.'" (p.189). It is difficult to imagine a better guide on the challenging path of learning to want one's own life again.

What an incredible book!! This is a must read for every woman. Ann has a unique way of putting together the history of Esther with the practical application of the truths from Esther for use in our daily lives. Ann portrays the grace and beauty of Esther in her own life and does so with Southern Charm.
Our Women's Ministry Team chose the theme of Ann's book for our fall retreat. When we all read the book...there was no doubt that the Lord's annointing is all over it. The book came to us ...for such a time as this... and we believe God will use it in our lives as well as yours.
You will not be disappointed by this book...it will be a read over. Special blessings to all who read this book.

I didn't realize the book had study questions at the end of the chapters.
These relate to the book of Esther. She is my favorite Bible character. I feel the book directly relates to woman today. Esther was a woman of great courage in hard times. Life today is no different. I enjoyed the book very much. I recommend it for study and reading. Ann Platz speaks very gracefully.

I give this book 5 stars. The content affects the very depths of a woman's soul. It is without a doubt, timely, due to the world events. As a pastor's wife, I have used all of Ann's books as teaching materials for my women's ministry. She is open, honest, scripturally sound and teaches with wisdom and understanding as a mature seasoned woman. Ann is not fearful of teaching truth and righteousness, as she lives it. I keep a generous supply of her books in my office, to give as gifts to women I counsel. Don't miss taking your own personal journey with Ann, as she opens hearts and eyes to the life of Esther. A woman of grace, courage, and excellance! IT!S A MUST READ, expecially for young women.
