I'm surprised that this book is considered out of print as I just bought it in a bookshop at Gatwick Airport on my way back from my first trip to Israel. I strongly recommend seeing Jerusalem before reading this, as then you will have a picture of the city in your mind before hearing the inside story on some of the landmarks. This book is better than a guide even though it does demand a little prior knowledge of the city and the Bible. Congratulations to Mr. Elon on his religous neutrality. I'd be glad to chat to anyone out there about this great country: pfinn50379@aol.com

I love this guide. If you plan on doing any type of auto travel in Canada, then this book is for you. It's easy to read, easy to use, and packed with information that will help you get where you need to go and find something to do when you get there. It provides solid suggestions for things to do at your destination, including restaurants, parks, special events, and popular tourist attractions. It beats the heck out of a generic atlas!

As a montrealer, it was interesting to see how montreal functioned in the 40's and 50's. Montreal has grown to become a very large city, but this gives a taste of montreal culture. Not only can it be interesting to children and adults but it is a book that can be interesting for people who aren't montrealers. A genuinely interesting book with some funny stuff that all kids used to do in their youth

Look, I am biased. I took his class in my freshman year of college. But I was a poor student who needed to fufill a humanities credit, and from the description of the course booklet, it seemed vaguely interesting.

But there are a few things you need to consider about me, the reviewer:

Due to my overwhelming and stupid class schedule, I was sleeping poorly and thus (since his class was in the morning) I either skipped it or slept in the back of the lecture hall. But I made sure to read this very book and attend the TA sessions.
Despite my lack of time spent on the class itself, I managed to learn quite a lot of things from this book and the professor, Richard Handler.

One, I learned about the contradictory nature of "perservation" and the use of assigning organic qualities to a "culture." I am sure other people can go into this with more eloquence than I can provide at the present time (particularly since I have not read the book in 6 years, but I will correct that.) I also learned about the Western chauvinism that leads people to paint "primitive cultures" as "Stone Age" and not as "Contemporary."

Anyhow, buy the darn book, people. Maybe you can learn something. Or if you are going to UVA, take his class. He's a great professor. Yeah, I slept through quite a bit of his lectures, but he always managed to wake me up when he started to get angry at the injustices of the world and then he would start to curse and rant and yell. Dang, I would think. This prof really believes in his stuff. He's passionate for one thing, and I think that's a good thing in a professor, a writer, and a thinker.

Understanding the Cree Love of the Land

I read this book for a Quebec Society course I have been taking at University. It has helped me understand the trials that the Canadian and Quebec governments have put the Cree people through for political and land gain. Let's not forget the economic gains that the Quebec government has made by using the James Bay Hydro electricity project for their own gain. The Cree are very eloquent in explaining thoroughly the political implications of the Quebec separatist government and their attempts to secede from Canada. It has helped me to put this subject into a better perspective. The Cree will not stand by and watch as their land is purportedly to be yanked away once again. Historically it has happened, but that is where the title of the book comes from "Never Without Consent" they have done their homework and after reading this well constructed book the government will not be able to displace the Cree. Thank you to the Grand Council of the Crees (Eeyou Astchee) and the ECW Press.

Reclaiming Cultural Identity
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2002-10-15
This well-illustrated book documents the arduous process of external assessment of the policies and curriculum of the first indigenous-controlled school board in Inuit Northern Quebec, with extensive input from the communities of the 14 villages involved, in order to establish (or "reclaim") an optimally effective education system combining experiential teaching of traditional life wisdom and values with present-day-world educational requirements. (Logically, this educational development paralleled the ongoing establishment of Nunavik political autonomy). A painstakingly detailed historical document, and a valuable learning resource for other communities around the world that are concerned about reclaiming their cultural identity.

Oatmeal and the Catechism: Scottish Gaelic Settlers in Quebec My grandparents came to Canada in the late 1800s from Lewis, Scotland. When I saw this book title, I was hoping for information about life in those early days. I was absolutely thrilled to discover the book included the story of my gandmother and her sister, their journey from Scotland, and their life in Canada. I have communicated with the author, and hope to meet her some day. For me, this book is a treasure!!!!!!!

Review Date: 2006-09-12
The Other Quebec: Microhistorical Essays On Nineteenth-Century Religion And Society by historian J. I. Little offers a wonderful glimpse of 1800's Quebec through records of true-life stories, journals, and community events. The Other Quebec is not a sweeping general history, but rather a collection of in-depth microhistories about specifics, from the Temperance Movement in the Eastern Townships 1830-52 to the 1800's perspective on marriage and parenthood. Researched in fine detail, and illustrated with a handful of black-and-white photographs, The Other Quebec offers a charming and insightful portrait of the past to lay readers and scholars alike.
