My daughter (20 months) loved this book (from the library) as much for the fun illustrations and rhymes but particularly for the game of finding three elusive ladybugs on each double-page spread. It's this kind of continuity and detail that makes a great kid's author/illustrator and Keith Baker is definitely one of them.

The children story Quack and Count was a neat little book that shows kids how to count to seven in a fun little way. What I like best was how the arthur was able to find different expressions to use in each of the different pages of the story.

I had bought the book for a 2nd grade lesson, but it is too basic for 2nd graders. The book has a great concept for teaching using different addends to get the same number, but definitely for K-1.

The book is about 7 little ducks who are playing in the pond. They play games such as peek a boo, hide and seek and chase bumblebees. There is also a ladybug hidden on each page. Read this wiith your toddler and see if they can find the hidden ladybug.

I liked the illustrations in the book the best. They are made from piece of cut paper to make a collage.

I would recoomed this book to parents and caregivers of kids ages birth to 3. It's a fun way to teach them the concept of addition.

This book has a wonderful repetitive rhyme that introduces all the different number conbinations for the concept of 7. At the same time there is a predictable quality to each of the pages and the rhyming patterns that promotes emergent literacy as well as numeracy. Great for Preschool aged children.

At first, I thought, how lame--a book with little ducks going in the water and that's it. There's really no plot here. But, my son kept wanting to read it during bath time. So, each time a duck goes in the water in the book, we make big splashes in the tub. This makes my son laugh and laugh. With a little creativity in delivering the content of the book, we were able to make it a lot of fun. I agree that the blow up duck that comes with it is useless, so I just threw it away.

I used this book as a card on a shower present. I got her a baby bathtub with towels and bath toys and this was the topper. It's a cute book. Not much content and the blow up duck that comes with it is rather useless. But it's cute. I have no clue how a kid will like it, but it worked well as a gift tag and got some awes at the shower.

This is a great party book. People will be laughing for hours as they look at all the loney pictures.

My favorite is the "Montana Double date" (Two unsaven cowhands and thier dogs in beat car.) And while I like Montanian's this picture of the 2 near-do-well's and their dogs just was great. So if you have sensitive skin, and can't take having your state mentioned in jest don't buy this book.

An Entertaining Book about the SAT

Review Date: 2006-11-13
I am a full-time SAT tutor. I find most of my students enjoy this book very much. A few do not. Overall, I think it is valuable (it is definitely entertaining) for students. I have found, however, that there are a couple of questionable reviews in the book. For example, there is a review on avoiding split infinitives. I have been through over 20 SATs and a handful of PSATs and have never seen split infinitives tested. Besides, most scholars believe that the split infinitive is acceptable as all the greatest authors (from Shakespeare to Maya Angelou) have used them. Students will read this book, not just for the content, but because they will be wondering what the wacky authors will write next.

The only way to prep

This book is the only prep book I've seen that takes a positive look at taking the SAT. It doesn't scare students by painting the test as a monster they have to duck in order to get into college, but instead as a tool to HELP get into college.

Down to earth and informative

I bought this book because I'm a month away from my first SAT. I knew I needed something to read that would help relax me into knowing that I can easily ace the test. This book fit that description. Owning the New SAT is a book that takes a very comfortable approach to the SAT. It reads in a conversational tone, and has some great humor. It's like having a friend or family member that has aced the SAT help you out. It took me less than 3 hours to read through this, over 2 days. And I will, without a doubt, be coming back to this book. Maybe I will read some parts on the way to the sat.

If you are looking at the book and thinking that it will be an unhelpful joke, then you should reconsider. The book is written to take a break from the giant text books of dry information, and really open up to students. Parents might not approve of some of the language, but as a teenager, there is nothing you will read that you haven't heard before. You won't find any "R-rated" language.

Everything a high school student needs to know about the SAT is in the book. For me, as a junior, the information seemed a lot like things I already knew (especially the math). But the SAT really should be entirely review. There isn't anything on the SAT that goes beyond 10th grade level, according to this book. In the book, there are also some bits about different ways to go about problems that you are unsure of. Such as eliminating wrong answers before deciding correct answers. Or looking at questions and answers before reading the reading passages.

All around great book for high school students.

I got this book as a gift and I also bought t-shrits of the characters. I think the story was very nice and it made me think about how important it is to remember others. After I read the story, I sat down and wrote thank you notes to my family and friends for the nice things they do for me. This story made me realize that people who do nice things always make others feel special and loved. And, people never foget that!

I loved the drawings of Moo the Cow with all of the barnyard animals wearing flowers on their heads. I wish you could buy these animals at a story because I'd buy them for my little niece.

Enjoyable story

''A Surprise for Quick Quack'' by Jeanni O'Neill Winston is a cute children's book about Quick Quack's surprise birthday. Three little hens decide to surprise their duck friend, Quick Quack with fun birthday presents. They want to be nice to Quick Quack because she's always been so nice to them. They round up Patty Pig and Lady Moo to help them treat Quick Quack on her birthday.

I think it's a cute story that children will love having read to them, and I really like the lesson that this story presents. It's nice to think of those who have been nice to you and thank them for their kindness. They sure will appreciate that you appreciate them! The little hens remind us that it's good to remember others.

While I enjoyed the story, the illustrations left a bit to be desired. Winston would have done well to hire a professional illustrator, rather than do the colored-pencil drawings, herself. The animals look very one-dimensional and flat.

Get it for every child you know!

I found "A Surprise For Quick Quack" to be an exciting animal allegory with spunk, humor and thoughtfulness. It is a much needed step in the right direction in instilling a multi-layered and healthy value system in growing individuals, as well as subtly aiding in developing self esteem and virtues in children. I went to its book signing and no surprise, this book was an instant and smashing hit. What an incredible turnout. I met the author (and illustrator) Jeanni O'Neill Winston and got several copies signed. She is an incredible talent and a very wholesome individual, with profound wisdom and insight. The characters in this allegory are right on mark and the children relate so well to them, and the parents love it and want more. She is in the process of working on more of such books. I can barely wait for those.

I think Wendy did a terrific job describing the qualities a true psychic has, what the levels of a psychic's abilities are and providing actual situations of people being scammed by so-called psychics. I needed information for a college paper and I could have done my entire paper on the information she provided in her book, but had to have 5 or more sources. I can feel that she is a true psychic and she is trying to save people a lot of heartache and money by warning her readers how to recognize the signs of a "psychic quack". You won't regret getting this book as it is very personal and very well written.

Debunks cold readers, but now what?

I bought this book because it was written from the perspective of somebody who obviously believes in psychic abilities but doesn't think that most of what we see on psychic TV or in psychic shops really qualifies as psychic abilities worth spending hundreds of dollars on. "Wendy" definitely raises the bar on what you should expect from a psychic.

However, after downplaying the abilities of other psychics, it's ironic that after a little investigation, she doesn't come off looking much better. On her website she charges $600 for a 90-minute phone or in-person session. I seriously doubt even the level of psychic ability that she claims to possess is worth that much.

Oh, and her being president of the "Professional Psychics of America" or whatever she calls it? Well, it's hard NOT to be president when you're the ONLY member. That's right -- either she's the only Level 4 or Level 3 psychic out there, or the other psychics were psychic enough to avoid joining forces with her. I wonder what they know that we don't?

Bridging The Gap
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2006-06-10
Work such as this helps to bridge the gap between years of extensive research in fields such as Parapsychology and the closed minded out dated belief that biology has the answers to everything. For example they're starting to wonder if the big bang theory is actually plausible.

Wendy suggests that ESP is scarce, but not impossible and there is 100 years of research to back up this claim. The CIA also came to the same conclusions, psychic ability is scarce but not impossible.

Wendy herself has achieved the reputation she has by performing brilliantly on a regular basis. No other profession is open to so much analysis, cynicism, ridicule or sabotage as this one; and it's a wonder that any genuine psychics have the courage to do what they do at all.

The book is fairly well written, easy to follow, but a little padded and repetitive.

However I think it's fair to say the work is original and fascinating.

My only criticism is that Wendy chose to use such harsh statistics, thru my own research I believe the figure is more like 70% bogus and 30% genuine. There are many psychics that refund people when they can't lock on, others are less honest. For the record I do think Wendy's fee is a little high, but she does have a fair amount of E.S.P! She isn't making this up!

Maybe she could have explored the realm of those that have a slight dash of Extra Sensory Perception, they usually mean well - but just end up out of their depth, to say virtually all psychics are frauds is a little severe.

I've also met very talented mediums who refuse to charge for their work, now surely that's worth noting.

Wendy was brave to write this book, she'll help many!

Long-winded for such a thin volume...

I would've loved to have this information more succinct & to the point, it would have made a good article...unfortunately the author obviously attempted to stretch it out & pad it, which, in my opinion makes for a frustrating read.

I give it 2 stars because it does contain some useful information, if you can tolerate & get past the author's overstated & condescending writing style.

Don't buy this if you are looking for another wonderful story about Duck and his farmyard friends, buy this for your toddler. Very few concept books try to tell a story - most of them are just pictures and perhaps a word or two - this one does. Admitedly, with just a couple of words per letter, it's a very brief story (the animals go have a picnic), but it's a nice alternative to most early alphabet books. Our 19-month-old is very fond of this one and the companion volume, Click, Clack, Splish, Splash: A Counting Adventure which is also a concept book that tells a story.

We bought this book for our daughter because she loves the other two Doreen Cronin books that we have --- Click, Clack, Moo - Cows that Type and Giggle, Giggle, Quack. The artwork in this book is great and it is a very quick read but she always chooses to read the other two first. It's a great book to have in your child's reading collection but if you don't have any of Doreen's books yet I would get Click, Clack, Moo and Giggle, Giggle, Quack first.

Please keep this in mind as my son is way past learning his alphabet and this book was a great disappointment. No stories here, just a D for Duck, C for Cow, etc, from A-Z. I was going to give this review 3 stars but I should have paid more attention to the title. For what it is, it's a great book.

As a story book 0 Stars
As an alphabet book 5/5 Stars

"The cows on Farmer Brown's farm are typing again," proclaims the liner notes to Click, Clack, Quackity-Quack. And indeed, there they are right on the C-page, Clickety-clacking on the typewriter. A duck grabs a page from the cows and totes it along in his beak. By the M-page, he's also pulling a bright red wagon with a blanket-covered basket inside. Other animal friends join the wagon-wielding, page-toting duck as he runs along. Where is everyone going? The destination is finally revealed at W, where we see a picnic blanket crowded with fruits, a pitcher of lemonade and that picnic staple we all love - Watermelons! X - Y - Z brings the book to a satisfying close: X marks the picnic spot, Y-awns erupt among the picnicked-out animals, and then Z-zzzzzzzzz....

Animal illustrations throughout the book are engaging and often amusing, but too often they seem distracting and extraneous to the overall story. As an example, the G-J pages are a hodge-podge of action that seems only vaguely related to the picnic, and it culminates with a confusing depiction of the Duck jumping over an inch-worm that seems to be jumping at the same time. The page carried by the duck disappears completely from R through W (6 pages), and by the time it is revealed at X its significance may have been forgotten by the reader.

For children who eagerly anticipate the ongoing adventures of Farmer Brown's cows and know to expect that their typewritten page will play an important part in the story, this book should be a satisfying adventure. Those who have never ventured to Farmer Brown's farm should probably start with an earlier adventure in the series.

Dial Up No Less Than Five Ducks in Cute Counting Book
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-03-06
Excellent story, could have done with a better design...

"Little Quack: Dial-a-Duck" is a board book and a counting book with an interesting concept. The book features a spinning wheel which can be used to "dial and count." The story itself is simple but cute -- Mama Duck patiently encourages her little ducklings one-by-one to take a dip in the water.

The only major problem with this book is the design. While the spinning wheel is a neat concept, it doesn't seem to stand up to wear well. As you spin it, you're supposed to see an increasing number of ducklings. But the wheel has a tendency to get stuck, and the ducklings are torn off easily. I can attest to this, as I have a copy currently checked out from the library that has most of the ducklings torn off.

This review is #2 in the series "Agent0042 Goes Ducky," in which I review books featuring cute ducks or duckling characters. The first was "Little Quack's New Friend".
